Publish using iWeb 09 using any WebDAV compliant web development software

Our School is looking at moving to the Mac Platform. We currently use Frontpage to publish our website. Our current web host says that we can use "any WebDAV compliant web development software to publish our site. Is there a way to do this using iWeb 09?

George ~ Yes, there's a catch. Your videos will become part of iWeb's Domain file which may make it slow to open in iWeb, make backups and re-publish everything (if needed). Better to upload your videos separately to your server and embed them into your iWeb site.
iWeb '09 makes this easy if you upload your videos to YouTube: iWeb '09 has a new YouTube widget to embed your videos into your iWeb page:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#widgets
...For high definition video, YouTube was recently ranked the best of several video sites:

YouTube officially enables HQ in embedded videos
Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
If you're concerned that some PC users won't have QT and won't want to install it, I think if you go the embedded YouTube route, almost all PC or Mac users will be able to view your videos — because "videos on YouTube are streamed through an Adobe Flash player."
If you'd prefer to use Flash in iWeb, this article may help:

  • Can I use iWeb to edit my current web site?

That's pretty much my question. Thanks for any input.

I found some help on the Apple blog.
Not a problem. You can use iWeb as your new .Mac web publishing center and keep your existing HomePage content alive in two different ways. The simplest (and we do mean simple) is to navigate to your HomePage pages in Safari and drag the urls into pages you're creating within iWeb. The link will appear with the name you've given the page in HomePage. When you publish, any links you've dragged in will take visitors to those pages.
The other way is also simple. Just republish the pages with iWeb. The same photo album you used the iPhoto HomePage button to publish can either be republished directly out of iPhoto again or dragged straight from iWeb's integrated iLife media browser. The photos will appear instantly. Just click Publish when you're done and announce the event to your audience.

  • Do Apple has web development software?

Hi everyone, I am looking for an innovative web development software to re design my website. I think iWeb is not available now. I have considered most of the web development applications but most of them have demerits. I have some New York based websites so I need a good one to maintain my websites. Can you please suggest me some?

iWeb has not been sold or supported by Apple for the past 2 years.
There are lots of alternatives around, but it depends on how complex you want to get.  Yes there is Dreamweaver, but if you want something that is very like iWeb, then take a look at EverWeb at http://www.everwebapp.com.  This is by Rage Software and is very like iWeb in design and use, but with all the things that we all wished that iWeb had.
If you want a Content Management System, then probably the better ones to use are either Drupal or Joomla rather than WordPress.  Great for creating membership sights etc and there are many extensions, modules and plugins to extend functionality.  If you know html and css, you can change the templates to suit what you want.
I have just transferred most of my sites to Drupal for increased flexibility and everything can be done online, so no more domain files.

  • Simple explanation of what is happening with iWeb and Mobile Me. Can anyone explain this simply and if our existing web site can be hosted elsewhere, if so can it still be updated using iWeb. Any advice very welcome

    We have a website that has run successfully using iWeb and Mobile me. We understand Mobile Me is being discontinued from June. From this forum it seems iWeb also is not being supported any more. So can the existing site be hosted successfully with another provider or is it best to start again. If so any advice on options would be very welcome;
    Thanks
    PB

For the most part if you just get a new webhost you can continue to run with iWeb. Since you are still running Tiger iWeb should work just fine for you. You will simply need to publish your website to a folder or with the built in FTP in iWeb. Apple has simply quit updating iWeb & there will come a day when iWeb quits working in the later OS's whatever kitty comes after Lion.

  • How to publish from iweb using snow leopard

    Hi,
Having had my iMac for some 4.5 years I finally have a real reason to use iweb and now can't work out how to publish from it.
I only have a mobile me option come up when I click the publish option. My mobile me account was deactivated some time ago and reactivation is not an option. I can't see any other option for publishing. Is there one or have I missed my chance?
Has anybody faced the same problem and found a solution?
    Thanks,

What version of iWeb are you using?  iWeb 09 or 08?
If using 08, then you'll need to select publish to a local folder and use Cyberduck or FileZilla or Transmit to upload your site to another server.
If using iWeb 09, then select your site name and a drop down menu should appear that has 3 options - publish to MobileMe, publish to ftp and then publish to a local folder.  You either need to select publish to ftp or local folder to upload your site to another sever.  This is what you will need to do anyway come the end of June when MME will be no longer.

  • Help, my googlemaps can not use the gps any more after updated the software.

    hello
    i am fresh here
about a month ago i got a 9630 from bell
at first the googlemap works well, but a few days ago i updated the software(9630AMEA_PBr4.7.1_rel77_PL4.1.0.40_A4.7.1.40_Bell_Mobility_Inc)
since then it can't use the gps any more.
it always say "your current location is temporarily unavailable. gps temporarily unaviliable "
thank you very much if any buddy can help me

Go into your OPtions, then advanced options, applications and highlite google maps, menu button, edit permissions.  make sure they are set to "allow".  this will typically solve it.  also go into your GPS settings (under options) and make sure its set to "location On".
Try these and you should be back up and running.

  • Anyone know any good, reliable web developer job resources?

I've been doing all the web development stuff at work up 'til
now but I've never really wanted to be a web designer/developer, I
want to focus on the front end of web design as well as print and

  • Publishing on iweb using iMac and Powerbook

How can I get the same published pages in iweb on my iMac, after I have worked and published on the powerbook - using mobile me- without loosing my previous work on powerbook?
    Thank you.

Copy your domain file for your site from your iMac to PowerBook or vice versa. Do you have the same version of iLife on both?
Your domain file is found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.

  • Can I use iWeb to "beef up" a facebook fan page?

I'm a total novice to publishing web sites but I have used iWeb to create a personal web page which is my only experience. So, my question is... can I use iWeb to put content into a facebook fan page I've created? I have FBML on the page if that helps.

    It would be very difficult and definitely not the right program to do it. You would really need a tool that is geared towards generating HTML such as one of these;
    http://search.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=html+editor&os=mac
But if there is something specific you would like to do, please me know and there might be a better tool I can recommend.

  • Can't post a revised version of a downloadable document using iWeb

I've stumbled across what may be a bug in iWen '09. This info is provide as an FYI (unless someone else sees something that I'm doing wrong).
My web site, created in iWeb '09, has a few downloadable pdf documents. Everything works fine. Today I decided to revise one of those documents but without changing its name. I quickly learned that there is no permanent link between iWeb and the document on my Mac, i.e. iWeb does not recognize when the modified date of the document changes and, thus, it does not upload the revised version to the web server.
So I changed the name of the document (by simply adding the digit '2' at the end, e.g. changed it from "document.pdf" to "document2.pdf") and changed the hyperlink on the web page to match. I saved the changes and republished, but the original document did not get replaced and the new document was not uploaded (I can see the entire file structure on the web server); the only document on the server was the original. When I went back and looked at my hyperlink settings, my selection of "document2.pdf" had been replaced by "document-1.pdf". No such document exists on my Mac and no document by that name appeared magically on the server.
Next, I went to the server and manually deleted the "document.pdf" file, reset the hyperlink back to "document2.pdf" and republished again. Again, iWeb reset the hyperlink back to "document-1.pdf" but didn't upload anything (since there is no "document-1.pdf" in existence.
Lastly, I deleted the link entirely, created a new one with an entirely different label, selected the "document2.pdf" file again, and again republished. Same thing: hyperlink reset to "document-1.pdf" and no file was uploaded to the server.
I'm going to struggle with this some more and if I find a solution, I'll come back here and share it. In the meantime, if anyone else finds a solution, give a holler.

    Brian:
If you want a way to be able to update the pdf file without having to use iWeb use the following method:
1 - zip/compress the pdf and upload it to your server and determine the URL to the zipped file.
2 - in iWeb create a hyperlink to an external page and user the URL to the zipped pdf as the link.
3 - whenever you want to update the pdf do so, zip it and upload to the server to replace the previous version.
This avoids having to use iWeb to change its "A file" hyperlink using a new zipped file. The Click Here link in this demo page is created that way: Add PDF . Put your cursor over it and check the URL in the Status Bar at the bottom of the window.

  • How to publish an iWeb website to an already existing wesbite?

I'm updating my companies website using iWeb. I would like to publish the sight but would also like to leave the existing website until all the editing is complete. I've never really used iWeb or any website program before and need some help.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi michael
Why not create a Dir in your Old site Called "test"
Publish your Iweb Site to "test" dir
Then while you are testing you can Navigate to
    www.yoursite.com/test/Iwebsite
to see if everything works, and when you are happy, Backup up then delete old site, then publish New Iweb site cleanly to your web server.

  • Recommend web development app

    Hi All,
Though I have an aging G3 iMac, I don't really consider myself a Mac guy. I run a design and development studio and run all PC's. My computers are getting near to end of life and I have to start investing in new hardware and would like to do a slow switchover to Mac's.
The one thing that has stood in my way is that I use a product called HomeSite for web development and encourage my employees to do the same. It's a true html editor in that it's not WYSIWYG, but color codes standard html, php, asp, and javascript (all of which we develop in regularly); and has a full complement of standard tag buttons and allows for custom made ones as well. The color coding may seem like fluff, but HomeSite recognizes standard language functions, as well as custom ones and it can help in coding and debugging. Basically, if you write a PHP variable and don't precede it with a dollar sign, it doesn't change to bold blue and you know you did something wrong.
So, if I can find an editor that has all the functionality of HomeSite for the Mac, I'm ready to switch. However, I'm not having much luck in finding an app. On Linux, there's Quanta for the KDE desktop, which is customizable and would probably work. Is it possible to get a KDE app running on X?
Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice on where to look for editors and recommendations.
    Thanks,
    Steve

theKompany.com sells Quanta GOLD for mac.
    http://www.thekompany.com/products/quanta/
I have successfully transitioned to Mac. I use Zend Studio for (X)HTML/PHP/MySQL development. I know you can run X11 apps but not sure if you can run Quanta.

  • Hostnames with local web development environment

I'm running the latest version of OS X Server 2.0.23 on Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and am trying to get set up to use X Server as a local web development environment.
When I went through the steps of installing X Server, I used the hostname "jb.local". By enabling the websites feature, and pointing my browser to jb.local, I was able to see the default welcome page, and thought everything was going well. However, I can't figure out how to add additional hosts to this domain (i.e. drupal.local, or wordpress.local) without modifying my hosts file.
Do I now need to setup DNS in the server and set my Mountain Lion client to use it or something, or is there some better way that I'm missing?

When I was installing Server, it guessed the .local extension, (which we are using as the name of our local subnet) but not the whole hostname "jb.local". I added that myself. This machine is not registered as "jb.local" anywhere in our internal DNS.
This confuses me because pinging jb.local correctly resolves to the internal IP address of this machine on our network. So how is this resolving?  There is no entry for this in my hosts file, and our internal DNS has no record of the hostname "jb.local".
This hostname was invented during the installation of the Server app, so there must be some communication between this machine, and the server app, that is resolving this hostname correctly, but I can't find anything on it.

  • Is Dreamweaver the best web design software to learn for an aspiring web designer?

    Hi Everyone,
Perhaps difficult to get an unbiased answer to this in a
Dreamweaver forum but I'm sure most of you considered other web
development software before you went with Dreamweaver. Of course
the answer is not as straight forward as just choosing one piece of
software over another. I understand that there isn't really one
piece of software that ticks every box for the web designer. What I
mean is that there isn't one standalone piece of software that's
best for web design (HTML, CSS etc.), graphics and animation etc.
and that's why we have things such as Adobe Creative Suite. Anyway,
sticking to web design and development in the Dreamweaver sense,
would I be correct to advise someone who wants to work in the field
of web design to use Dreamweaver as their main tool? Particularly,
I would be interested to know if Dreamweaver really is the industry
standard as it's important to consider future job prospects.
I hope you understand what I'm asking.
Thanks, in anticipation for your help.
P.S. Has anyone heard of Enterprise Works?
