Published Projects in RoboHelp 7 Generate Large Quantities of Windows/Temp Files When Open

After publishing a project in RoboHelp 7 WebHelp Pro and then
opening the project from the web server, RoboHelp generates
hundreds of RHS*.tmp files in the Windows/Temp directory. This
causes a Protcol host error which crashes RoboHelp. Any ideas on
what is causing this?

Hi Vivek,
Thanks for clearing that up about the tmp files problem. This
is good.
The problem I am getting with RH8 (and same errors I received
when trying to connect to RH7 Server) is that when trying to
publish, get "Publishing has been cancelled. Connection failed.
Please check the connection and post again. Native Error:
Unauthorized".
We thought we had the RH8 Server configured correctly and
currently the site says "Congratulations! The Adobe RoboHelp Server
has been successfully created". Like Cape Ops, we too ended up
resorting back to our RH5 RoboEngine Server after spending months
trying to publish succesfully to RH7 Server. Adobe support couldn't
really offer any solution to solve our problem. We have had a few
very experienced IT people working on this but can not get to work.
With RH8 Server they have been having problems getting IIS and
Tomcat to communicate.
If you could provide any help as to what we should be looking
at, please let me know and I can pass on to my IT guy who is trying
to configure it.
We can't afford to spend much more time trying to get this to
work and I would love to be able to post back here saying this was
solved. Otherwise, we'll continue publishing RH7 to RoboEngine
Server, but my IT guy is suggesting that I look at other software.
Thank you!

  • Wiki or Robohelp - What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp?

What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp? I currently use RH9/RH9 Server and  publish multiple SSL.  The company is looking to stop using Robohelp and replace our online help authoring tool  (RH) with a wiki. Are there any benefits of going to a wiki environment.  What RH features/functions that I have today will i not have by having IT import our robohelp files into a wiki?
I know that a wiki is not an authoring tool, but someone must think it is and we'll still have all the functionality of publishing multiple SSLs, reports, etc once in the wiki environment.  Any comments - is this the best route?

    Hi,
There are many differences. The idea of a wiki is to allow anyone to view and/or edit the content. Depending on the wiki system, you can set access control for viewing and editing.
Wiki's typically have simple syntax (html in a wiki is a serious security risk), allow image embedding, links and attachments. You will need to learn the specific syntax (rather easy, but also very limited).
What will you lose? This depends on the features available in the wiki system as well as the available plugins. A few downsides:
    - WYSIWYG editor limited, if at all.
    - No snippets
    - No variables
    - Dropdowns (may be possible through plugins)
    - Index
    - Styling based on css classes (mostly supported through HTML which is a security concern)
    - Only one version of your support system: multiple versions require multiple installations/configurations.
    - No searching in attachments.
    - No CBT (Though some wiki's allow comments in the wiki code)
    - No Word/FrameMaker import.
    - You have to create your own CSH calls.
    On the upside:
    - Most wiki systems are free, even for commercial use.
    - The syntax is quite simple, allowing you to quickly write text.
    - Wiki's typically offer good support for syntax highlighting.
    - They are very easy to set up.
    - Most wiki's have plugins to enable comments.
The greatest downside in my opinion is that you always have the latest version of all files. Whenever you update a page, everyone immediately has the latest version. And if you want to create help for a feature that isn't released yet, you will have to use access control to make sure not everyone sees the (unfinished) help for the unreleased feature. With RoboHelp you have a single source that creates a one way output.
We use both RoboHelp and wiki's: RoboHelp for customer help and wiki internally to share knowledge. And sharing knowledge is what wiki's are designed for.

    Willam

  • Diplay Large/Small Icons  (Windows NT File Explorer look)

    Hi,
In a program, I have to display a list of elements. These elements are represented by an icon. All the elements must be "Drag and Droppable".
First step : I would like to know HOW to display my element's icons : using wich java component(s) ? Using wich method(s) of this/these java component(s) ? The display MUST be the same as the Windows NT File explorer (using Large Icon in the file list)
Second step : How make my elements "drag and droppable" ?
    Thanks in advance
    Anthony

The common use is to put directly the objects you want to manage into the list. After that, you have to
manage what is called the 'renderer' of the items in the list.
For more information, just read the API... it is really clear enough to get something working with the
    documentation. (see http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/javax/swing/JList.html)

  • CS 5.5 constant regeneration of peak files when opening a project.

    Hello
I would like to have a definite answer why does PPro CS5.5 just like others before it, keep regenerating peak files every time I open a project.
    Thank you.

After doing some investigation and research it seems that the fault is not with Adobe Software (it still could be) but rather an OS and the way it handles permissions.
Windows 7, 64-bit seems to ignore any and all permissions and policies settings for the files and folders. It does it in a peculiar way. While it doesn't seem to prohibit writing to a folder that it marks as a read only (and won't let you change it) it makes it look as such to the apps that are trying to do this writing. Even as the new peak files are written the Adobe Premiere Pro does not seem to realize that.
Two things were done to remedy the situation:
    Making Adobe Premiere Pro run as administrator (why on earth do I have explicitly make it so when my account is an Administrator account is beyond me);
Downloading and installing system registry record that allows one to take the ownership of a file or a folder (an option appears in the right-click context menu when you right click on a folder or a file) which allows one to remove "CREATOR OWNER" as a user name from the permissions in a security tab of the folder properties and also to actually enable full rights to one's user account that will not go away after clicking apply.
    Problem is solved!
PS; have no idea how to fix similar problem people have on Mac Os, sorry.

  • After generating a .mov, iMovie does not delete the temp files

When generating a .mov iMovie creates a temp file indicated by a greyed-out icon. It is my understanding that iMovie should delete this temp file when the movie is finally generated. I've been working on a stack of movies lately and I noticed that my available space on the HD was dissappearing at an alarmingly high rate. What is happening for me is that the icon does dissappear, but the file itself remains. I know this 'cuz when I revealed the hidden files I found 1.8 Tb of hidden files sitting on my desktop, each the temp file of a movie I recently generated.
Any idea what's happening here? When I ran iMovie 6 (?) I didn't see this issue. I'm now on iMovie 11.
    Thanks,
      James

This seems to have been a problem for a while. My Aperture library is >500GB and I can't store it on the internal drive of my new retina MBP. If I hadn't moved to referenced files already I would have had to do it now.
When you point iMovie to the drive with the referenced folders you seem to have to use the 'import' option and cannot index the movies in folders lower than the one chosen. I can tolerate the inconvenience of iMovie not being able to use the index of referenced movie files. It's an extra bind that iMovie itself can't index a drive or hierarchy of folders to produce a pick list of video footage.
One thing I might try is creating a new Aperture library on an external drive and putting all my video files in that. Keeping that as a managed library, I can perhaps take advantage of the Aperture-iMovie link.

  • Is there a way to create a site map of all RoboHelp topics in a published project?

My company uses an external search of our published RoboHelp options (as well as the internal; the external search covers all projects instead of a single one). We're looking to change search programs, but according to our web developer a lot of searches have issues finding the topics inside the published projects because of the way it links to topics using Javascript.
I think I know the answer to this question, considering it hasn't come up in any of my searches, but in case I need a second cup of coffee -- is there a site map or listing of links within a RoboHelp project that includes all the topics? Alternately, does anyone know of a service or program that can easily create a site map from a RH project? For reference, we're using RoboHelp 9.
    Thanks!

    Look in Tools > Reports.
Some can be saved as files. Others you can copy and paste into a text file.

  • RoboHelp HTML Version 10 - Navigation panel not displaying in published project

We are generating a WebHelp project in RoboHelp HTML Version 10 and the navigation panel (TOC, Search, etc.) is no longer visible in the index file (viewed locally) and it's only visible by clicking "Show" when viewed in a web server. This issue is occurring with Internet Explorer 11 and Google Chrome Version 39.0.2171.99 m. I also tried to view the index files of previously generated projects and am experiencing the same issue (this did not occur before). Is this a known issue? It appears that there a few other discussions posted recently experiencing similar issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nikki

    Hi there
Sorry, but I'm a bit confused. What you are describing sounds like perfectly normal behavior.
Can you share a link where this is happening? Not so we can click it, but so we can see what the link looks like.
If you want a topic to open with the surrounding navigation (TOC, Index, Search, Glossary) you need to click the Show link, then look at what's in the Address bar. Copy that link and you should have what you need.

  • Merging Projects in RoboHelp 8

I've never merged projects before so this is probably user
error, but when I follow the steps from the Adobe help system for
merging projects in RoboHelp 8, generate the project, and then view
it my merged project is not present. This is what I did:
    (1) Created a generic project (documentation that we reuse in
    all help systems)
    (2) Created the client project (documentation that's specific
    to this client's help system)
    (3) From the Client Project in the TOC pod, I clicked the New
    Merged Project icon
    (4) This is a WebHelp Pro project so I selected the
    FlashHelp/WebHelp/Adobe AIR tab
    (5) I browsed for the generic project (located in a seperate
    folder)
    (6) I clicked OK
    (7) The generic project name showed up in the TOC
    (8) I generated the project like normal
    (9) I clicked View Results and the only stuff that's there is
just the stuff from the client project. Nothing from the generic
    project is available.
Everything that I read says that merged project doesn't show
up until the project is published. I guess with the way we do work
I don't understand the difference between generating and
publishing. What happens is that I generate the project, zip the
WebHelp Pro folder, email it to a developer or put it in a shared
drive depending on the client and then the developer attached the
files to the system. To call the correct screen, I have to include
a HTM for every single screen (wfm) in the application. The
application calls the screen name with the same HTM name which
displays a screen help page for that particular screen and then the
user can use the navigation (TOC or search or links) to find the
help topics they're looking for. I doubt this is the "best" way to
do this, but I'm working with developers on a 12 hour time
difference and this is how they requested the files. Point being --
there is no "publishing" step according to my understanding of
publishing. I know there is a server somewhere because the actually
application we build is on a server, but I don't know the technical
aspects about how my HTM files I create get onto that server and
    display online.
    Can anyone help me?

Actually, I had generated all the child project previously,
but what I did wrong is that I didn't create a folder for the
child. It looks like in the table of contents, you actually have to
include a separate folder for the mergedProject to go into. I just
called it the same thing that I called the child project. For
example "Global Features." You can't just have the mergedProject go
into the table of contents without it being in a folder (normally).
That said, I did find a way to get it in there before I found this
solution. I did all the steps that Peter Grainge had suggested,
then I copied and pasted the !SSL folder from where the child
project was saved into the mergedProject folder of the parent
project. That's basically what RoboHelp does anyway, but doing it
manually allows for you not to have to create a folder in the table
of contents -- just provides a different navigation to the same
    thing.

  • Rh10 - HTML Help - linking to pdf shows when generate CHM and 'view results' but not when double-click on CHM in project folder or in product help

I have several PDFs in Baggage Files that are linked to topics in the Table of Contents.  When I generate the CHM file and 'View Results' I am able to pull up/access the PDFs with no problem.  When I go into the project folder and just double-click on the CHM file, I cannot pull up/access any of the PDFs nor can I access them in the product help.  Any ideas?  Is a setting "off" somewhere in my project?
    I am using RoboHelp 10.
    Thanks!

    eeddings wrote:
Thanks for the idea, but I can't switch the project to WebHelp.  This .chm project consists of a master project with 18 slave projects and a slew of remote jumps.  I'd have to recreate all of the remote jumps if I switch to WebHelp.
Hopefully Adobe can fix this issue.
Well, first off, even though it would be WebHelp, it would be inside a CHM container. So for all intents and purposes it would be a CHM file. But having said that, I'm not sure there is a way to merge these hybrid types of CHM files.
If your statement about Adobe fixing the issue is meaning that they can either remove the Print icon from the CHM Viewer, I wouldn't hold my breath because as I said, that's in Microsoft's lap and they haven't updated the CHM viewer in a long while. Doubtful they ever will.
The only hope would then be for Adobe to update the code used for the Mini TOC. The only way that will happen is if enough folks submit this as a bug via the following link:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
Until that would happen, your likely best bet is to simply avoid using the Mini-TOC feature or just insert a warning that if the topic is printed, it will cause issues. Or, you could use bookmarks and links to establish your own verision of a "Mini-TOC"

  • Unable to Open Project with RoboHelp 9

I've been working on a project using RoboHelp 9. Last night when I attempted to save RoboHelp froze. Looking at the CPU usage in task manager I saw it was still hovering between 45 and 50% CPU usage. Seeing as it was the end of the day anyway, I decided to leave the program running overnight in the hopes that it would eventually unfreeze.
When I came in this morning it was in the same frozen state, still using between 45 and 50% of the CPU. So I used end task to stop the program from running and tried to re-open the project. The project tried to open but froze during loading.
After consulting the forums I made a back-up of my project directory and deleted the CPD file. The project hung again on open (though it created a new CPD file was slightly smaller than the original CPD file).
I restored from backup and tried to open from the XPJ file but had no luck.
Restoring from backup again, I deleted the CPD and XPJ files and tried to open the HHP file with similar results.
Other projects are working fine so I created a new project and attempted to import the HTML file (a file which opens fine in Firefox) and it also causes the project to hang.
    A bit of additional info:
I'm running the project on a local drive on Windows 7 32 bit edition.
Does anyone have any ideas for next steps I should try? I really don't want to have to restart the project from scratch.

    Hello Peter.
    Thanks for the speedy reply.
I have rebooted my system to no effect. I also am able to work on sample projects (adding and removing content, modifying topics, saving, generating output, etc) without any issue.
I tried the items you talked about on your Opening Projects page that I hadn't already tried. I even tried deleting the HHP file and using the HHP file to generate a new one in the hopes I might luck out but it also hung. It did create a new XPJ file that would open but all the content was missing (I could see the table of contents but the links were all x'd out because the page they were pointing to wasn't being loaded).
One thing I have noticed is that most (though not all) of the times I try to load the project and it hangs it hangs out "Loading topic files" (other times it hangs without any text indicating what it is doing).

    Hi

Easiest way to find out if this is the problem is by:
    • Create a new User-Account
    • Log out of Your old one and into this
    • Re-try iMovie
If it now works OK - then 99.9% the problem is iMovie pref. file that needs to be trashed.

  • FrameMaker 11 file link broken when published out to RoboHelp 10

    Hello
I have the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 4 and am trying to test publish a FrameMaker 11 file out through
the FrameMaker publish button to WebHelp (by way of RoboHelp 10).
In the FrameMaker 11, file, I have a link to a PDF that sits down in a subfolder.  I have used the following approach:
    1. Highlighted text in a FrameMaker table.
    2. Chose Special>Hyptertext
    3. From the Hypertext panel, I selected Message Client from the Command drop down menu
and in the syntax field I entered:  message openfile Foldouts/Foldout1.pdf
    4. I then tested the link in FrameMaker by using ALT and CTRL and it works.
    5. Next, I saved the FrameMaker file as a PDF (File>Save As PDF) and tested the PDF.  The PDF links work.
So with all that said, how come I can't select File>Publish>WebHelp and have the link information carry through to the WebHelp HTM output?
I tried this Publish option straight out of the box and it did not work.  I also tried creating a custom RoboHelp template (.XPJ file) and it did not work.
I believe there is a PgfId marker that is generated when the Hyptertext is created in FrameMaker (using the process stated above), but that marker is not getting
translated into an HREF, once it gets published out through RoboHelp 10.
I also tried saving the FrameMaker 11 file directly as an HTML file using the FrameMaker 11 - File>Save As HTML process, but no links carried through
    using that process either.
I do not know if this is a FrameMaker issue or a RoboHelp issue, so I am now posting this in both forums.
If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
Are there certain steps one must do to preserve FrameMaker Hypertext links that get published out through RoboHelp 10 to WebHelp?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
