Publishing an alternate layout in InDesign CS6

I've create a 3 page sample file to show a client how they can re-purpose their InDesign print file and use InDesign to create alternate layouts. I've created a test file that has 2 alternate layouts. One is the standard iPad portrait view and the other is an iPad landscape view. I simply want to output this file as a PDF that I can show to the client on an iPad. How do I output or publish this file so that when view on an iPad it will show the landscape layout in landscape orientation and the portrait layout in portrait orientation?

Small correction: You CAN create EPUB3 fixed layout if you have CS6, but it can be a painful process. Anne-Marie Concepcion explains how in her video on Lynda.com:

  • Liquid Layout crashing InDesign CS6

I was using liquid layout - pinning a graphic-  and when I tried to resize, the whole program crashed.   Every time I try to resize - on any page in the doc, it crashes the program.
InDesign CS6.   Liquid page rule:  controlled by master [which is object based].   Objects move with page.
I've tried everything, for hours now.   I have no idea why it was fine, then all the sudden it's broken.
    Very frustrated.

How would you go about exporting your alternate layout alone for print?

  • How to create interactive pdf for Ipad using InDesign CS6

Hi I created a Magazine layout using InDesign CS6 and wanted it to be viewed on native Ipad reader (but not as apps).  I put interactivity features like page navigations and hyperlinks and converted it to interactive pdf. The problem was the links and buttons are not showing on Ipad.
I tried using Acrobat Pro to create the hyperlinks and this time the navigations and hyperlinks are showing. But is there a way not to create the hyperlinks manually one by one (specially the next page and previous page). If I have more than 100 pages of documents this process will be very tedious.
Is there a solution to create the interactive pdf directly from InDesign without creating the links in Acrobat?

    Hi Guys
This is Sean Smith.  Marilou who wrote the original post works for me.  Bob if you could point us in the direction of details you need I’ll ensure we provide the additional information as soon as possible.
M tells me she pretty much doing exactly what Steve's article suggests.
The concern is what a remarkably cumbersome process this appears to be.
Even though I believe her explanation entirely I find the problem to be highly disconcerting as it’s wasting an immense amount of valuable time and inhibiting the production process significantly.
She is producing wonderful results but via an immensely painstaking process fraught with potential for error.  Each page link has to be manually linked to the next by number.  It’s entirely possible to make a mistake and link to the incorrect page thus missing pages.
If she inserts a new page – guess what? All the pages links have to changed manually and double checked yet again.
If she makes a ‘Contents’ section as we do and exports the InDesign file as an interactive PDF all the contents items and links are missing and are therefore blank.
She then has to export the document as a plain PDF and do the job again in Acrobat.
For an extravagantly wealthy company with such extraordinarily expensive software I find this to be entirely incredulous.
Who is the Product Manager for InDesign?
Are they aware of this issue?
What are they doing about it and when will it be done?
Just curious are you guys paid employees or volunteers as this appears to be an official forum and we are new here?
Digital publishing of PDF magazines appears to be an explosive growth market especially for platforms such as the iPad but this primary product for the task appears to be inadequate or ill-conceived.
Is DPS a possible solution or is this more for Apps than PDF production?
    Regards
    Sean

  • Error with styles when using Alternate Layout

I'm trying to use the new Alternate Layouts function in CS6 to create a template for both 8-1/2"x11" and A4 sized pages. While trying to create the alternate layout, I receive an error that says, "One or more styles were not mapped. Cannot create a mapped style when one of the source styles is based on another source style."
I think this means that InDesign doesn't like that some of our styles are based on others - for example, Figure references are based on Body text, with bold-italic-centered changes. I have changed all the paragraph styles to be based on "[No Paragraph Style]" instead of being based on other styles, yet I still get the error. What should I do? Thanks.

That's a great find Mike. I just ran into this problem myself and sure enough, removing the nested styles did the trick. That being said, I didn't get the error when creating the first Alternate Layout (even though the source layout contained nested styles). I didn't receive the error until creating the second Alternate Layout. I ended up removing the nested styles, creating the Alternate Layout, then putting them back in. Fortunately with this project, I don't have a ton of nested styles. If I did, it would be a huge pain. Anyone at Adobe able to comment on this issue? Known issue?

  • How to get notified of creation of Alternate Layout on CS6 ?

    Hi,
I'm working on a plugin for InDesign CS6. I need to get the notification whenever alternate layout is being created on a document.
    Can anyone give any pointers.

    Dear Angnam,
PLD has no support for SQL. There is no direct field to get the cost. You may need add a UDF to get the value through FMS query.
    Thanks,

  • Indesign cc. Alternate layout. Master B.

    Background.
    New > Document > web.
    I am creating an .epub.
    QUESTION.
Does it matter if the layout is vertical or horizontal in Indesign CC ?
I followed Anne Marie Concepcion's tutorial for creating an Alternate Layout.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/visual-design-cs6/working-with-alternate-layouts/
It is actually for Indesign CS6.
I Created an alternate layout so now I have two:
Letter V  which looks like landscape.
    800x600 which looks like portrait.
I thought that I would keep only the 800x600 portrait.
The tutorial shows how you can 'delete' the layout you do not want and then do a 'save as'.
    I did this.
But now I  No Longer Have a Master A.
    I only have a Master  B.
    QUESTIONS
How can I change this to be called Master A.  ?
With Indesign CC, and with the updated functionality of tablets, does it really matter which layout I use ??
I created an ePub in 2010 using Indesign CS5, and I did not use alternate layouts and the ebook seems to be fine on all tablets.
Can someone please clarify these things for me.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Anne-Marie.
So I think that I should just delete my 800x600 Layout ?
The 800x600 layout physically looks in my pages panel  to be vertical.
And then save it again ?
QUESTION: Which Layout should I keep ??
That will leave me with the Letter V layout which was what is listed in all of my saved versions.
This is where I suppose I became confused.
The fact that that the term LETTER V is used  when I created a document for the WEB.
'LETTER'   denotes physical pages to me.
    V is for vertical.
document > new > web      defaults to 'horizontal' orientation if I am not mistaken
Does that makes sense ?  My confusion.
    It is just feedback.
I just hope that I do not have to go back and re-edit those last 50 pages
    Thanks for the help.
    I love adobe products.
I just want to understand this and move onto the next step.
I have been dreaming of a strategy to get my TOC to work the way I want it too.
    Thanks Bob too.

  • Photoshop images with spot channels in Indesign CS6 (layout question)

I've got an Indesign CS6 layout that will have a spot varnish when it goes to press. Right now I've got a layout with psd files that have spot channels in them that will be used for the spot varnish.
My question is, in Indesign when I'm laying this out should I have one layer with all the psd artwork (with no spot channels) and then a layer on top of that with the psd files with the psd layers turned off with the spot channel showing? I want to make this easy to print in the office so by doing it this way I could just turn the spot layer off and print.
Will this work for the printer?
layer 1 psd files with no spot channels
layer 2 psd files with photoshop layers turned off with the spot channel showing

Besides the obvious extra work of tracking 2 images, there would be potential problems if the images needs to be scaled and moved, and you would have to assume people downstream would know what's going on—should the layer be on or off?
I would double check with the current printer—they should know the only way to view a spot is via Sep or Output preview by turning CMYK off—magenta could just as easily be process as  spot.
Take a closer look at the Alias method. Here it is with your magenta defined SPOT VARNISH.
With SPOT VARNISH set as No Alias in Ink Manager and with Overprint turned on:
And with an additional spot color defined as white named CLEAR VARNISH. When you need to print in house alias SPOT VARNISH to CLEAR VARNISH and check Simulate Overprint in the Print dialog. You can get to Ink Manger via the Print>Output dialog or Swatches panel:
All you have to do is delete the CLEAR VARNISH before sending the job to the printer or exporting

  • Export an alternate layout from a indesign book

    Hello,
I'm working on a big file, which has been, for size reasons, separated in multiple files that have then been assembled in an indesign book
Problem: This document is edited for print and also as an interactive pdf for ipad, which is why I have created an alternate layout for the ipad version, which contains a navigation based on hyperlinks, linking different pages and documents from the Book.
But here is the thing, when exporting the whole book to pdf (using the Indesign Book panel), I can't choose the layout I want to export, as I can do when I export from a single document with several alternate layouts
What I get when I export from a single file with two alternate layouts to interactive pdf
What I get when I export the Indesign Book with two alternate layouts to an interative pdf
Why is that? Is there a way I can export only one layout without having to RE-assemble the whole document into one file?
If I export the whole book as it is, my two alternate layouts are just following each other and it's a big mess, not to mention the hyperlinks don't work anymore.
Also, if the only way is to make one file, the file is then too heavy to be worked with, it's 280 pages long, with HD images on every page ( and the alternate layouts double the pages...)
    Does anyone have a solution?

You mean, breaking the document into two or three files and then exporting each of these and then assembling the pdf files?
But then the hyperlinks from one doc to another don't work. I tried it already.
The problem is that I need to export ALL of these documents into ONE pdf because of the interactivity of the hyperlinks.

  • Alternate Layouts amd Document Intent CS6

Is there a way to create an Alternate Layouts with different Document Intents? I cant't see it around and would like to backup this information.
This would become handy when creating a printed book and e-Book from one InDesign Document. Hope I miss something, because I love the LiquidLayout/Alternate Layout Features!

    Hi Syed,
Thanks for the crash dump. I analyzed it at my end and it seems that AI CC 2014 goes into non-responding state due to some printer (printer driver) conflict.
Can you try the following two workarounds and let me know the end results:
    1) Remove all the connected/installed printers.
    2) Update the printer drivers for the connected/installed printers.

  • Problems installing digital publishing update for Indesign CS6

    Hello,
I am having some problems installing update I need for Indesign CS6. I'm working on an interactive pdf and need to update my version of cs6 to use the digital publishing suite. Upon attempts to use the 'folio builder' I am asked to update and go to 'help' 'updates'. The Adobe Patch installer begins to load then immediately crashes. I have tried installing the publishing update from adobe licensing but the same problem happens when I attempt to install the file using the patch installer.
I'm using CS6 version 8.0, can anyone help?
    Thanks

JulianLister I would recommend reviewing your installation logs to determine the cause of your current difficulties.  You can find information on how to locate and interpret your installation log files at Troubleshoot with install logs | CS5, CS5.5, CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cs5-cs5.html.
Please feel free to post any specific error messages you are receiving to this discussion thread if you have any questions.

  • Alternate Layouts not like InDesign

I am trying to use the alternate layout feature in Muse but it is not working like it does in InDesign. Creating blank pages doesn't really help much and not linking the text makes for double work.
Are there any plans for the future to change this feature to be more like InDesign?

I know it does not serve the same purpose. I just think it would be better if there were a choice to include the content. It is a lot easier to re-arrange then to start from scratch or cut and paste.
More important - linking the text so that a change can be updated in all layouts without re-entering. Also, adding photos could be automatic across layouts - again if you want to.

  • How can I export a pdf of an InDesign alternate layout from a book?

    Hello:
I have a book that is in a 6×9″ layout and I would like to make an alternate layout for 8.5×11 (and other formats) then export both as independent books to PDFs. How can I do this or is there another better way? I thought alternate layout would be the way to go, but I don’t think I can export the alternate layouts for all my chapters/etc., from the book menu without including ALL the pages from each layout?
Thanks for any direction or advice!
    Kevin

    Hi Willi:
Thanks for your prompt response.  Do you know if there are any scripts that can do this or at least help automate some of this process?
    Thanks!

  • Indesign CC: Alternate Layout

Does anyone know the correct workflow to add a new page to an alternate layout? I have my vertical document p. 1-50 and created an alternate horizontal layout from it. Currently all my text links across so when I update my vertical, the horizontal warns me and updates when needed.
My problem now is that...I want to add more pages 51-100 to my vertical layout, but am unsure how to also add them to the horizontal layout. I want to avoid having to start from scratch and need to ensure all my text frames stay linked. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
That could work if I only had 1 file with updates but, I actually have about 50 different files pending updates all with different page counts and each file already has an alternate layout.

  • Some alternate layout questions CS6

I have been meaning to ask this as I have an issue coming up again and need to know how to proceed.
    I have a .indd in A4
I need to do an alternate layout in pixels 600 x 1024
I was able to create this but the artwork and the text falls outside of the bleed box area. So my question is how can I create an alternative layout from an A4 to a 600 x 1024 pixle portrait and at the same time get the art work to display correctly within the boundries?
    A tutorial available on this?
    Thx
    R

Click on the page tool then hover over your text box/object center, the following statement will be shown "The object width is locked. Click to change the object width as the page changes width" and a similar statement will display on the object height. Hover on the box/object edge, the following statement will be shown "Space is flexible between object and page edge. Click to pin the object relative to page edge" (those are the 2 options responsible for displaying your objects correctly). Then from the page panel  drop down menu choose create alternate layout and under options choose "Object-based" in the liquid page rule drop down menu. Remember to create the alternate layout after setting your objects for changes to take effect.
