Publishing error/ no menu

I

Hi there. I have exactly the same issue and it started a couple of days ago. Looking at the forums, it seems that quite some people have the problem. In my case, until yesterday, I couldn't even check one my blog entries withouth getting an error message. I just tried 5 mins ago and it works.
IF ANYBODY HAS A SOLUTION TO THIS "UNKNOWN ERROR WHILE PUBLISHING" with iWeb 08, we shall all be relieved...:-)!
Cheers from Belgium.

I've tried all articles so far on apple support site. Tried on new OS user and publishing to folder and publishing a test page. I still get an error. Publishing to folder works fine, its just when I publish to MobileMe. Also tried different network and restarting computer etc.
    Help me. Thanks.

If you are logged in OK maybe you should look at your Keychain.
    Finer/Go/Utilities/Keychain Access.app.
Try "Keychain First Aid" from the "Keychain Access" drop down menu.

Hi - I'm new here but this afternoon almost gave up trying to publish iWeb files to my new .mac account. Then, instead of going from the top menu, I clicked on the publish button, lower left of the iWeb window, and it went right up. Not enough tech for this answer, and it may have been coinky-dinky, but it worked ;>

  • Publishing Errors

Hi - I am using a 3.4Ghz Core i7 Imac with 24GB of RAm running Mavericks.  Internet connection is through a Time capsule and a Vigor modem.  iWeb is version 3.04.
I have a hosted website which I update regularly - the site is at www.mountain-rats.co.uk and has been run via iWeb since its creation.  Until yesterday, I have had no problems whatsoever with updating the site.
Yesterday was a big update which I know takes a while because my broadband is very slow - however, it always gets there!  After 6 or 8 hrs of uploading (light flashing on modem) iweb reported a publishing error and advised that I try again later.  iWeb was frozen and I had to restrat to get control of the programme.  Since then, I havenot been able to publish - constantly getting Publishing Error messages.
Funnily enough, all of the updates I wanted to do ARE on the website but iWeb still shows the files and pages as requiring updating - ie they are shown on Red.  It seems to me that iWeb has not updated itself to show the latest state of the website - all publishing has in fact been done but iWeb does not seem to show that.  Now, I can publish nothing although I can update the pages as per normal in iWeb.Is there any way of getting iWeb to reset or to acknowledge that the publishing has completed and start again?  Any help would be much appreciated - I can't update the site any more now till I get it sorted.
Could I dump iWeb and reinstall - would that help?
    Regards
    Peter

Oooooooooooooops!  Sorry about that.  Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
Are you able to publish your site to a folder on the hard drive successfully and have iWeb finish up as it should?

  • I'm getting "Publish Error - An unknown error occurred" in iWeb

....and it's killing me! My podcast has been MIA for over a week now. The link to my webpage is gone. I can't find any help here. When I try to publish my episodes, this is what I get: Publish Error - An unknown error occurred...
I can't seem to find any advice anywhere on what to do about it. I've searched forums and tried reloading, refreshing, etc. Please help.
    Thanks!
    Bill

Well, actually it is solved... I guess. My son wrote a page on a blog model, without no blog on it; I first removed all buttons that could call an RSS feed or podcasts from all the pages, the issue remained.
The page in question displayed another error message in Safari, telling something was missing, and it was impossible to navigate the site via the menu banner; so I Cmnd-A the page, copied the whole stuff onto a brand new blank page, no success neither.
Eventually, I rewrote the page from scratch, and it solved the issue. Perhaps somewhere on the former page a hidden button or a piece of code which put the mess... I dunnow. But it seems to be OK now.

  • I keep getting a Publish Error

I keep getting a Publish Error:  There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider.
So I've been trying for a while now.  my ftp is ftp.riverainstruments.com.  when i test connectivity it, the test is successfull.  I've asked my service provider and they said to change to ftp.powweb.com  when i enter the password, then it says the password is incorrect.  So i change the password for just in case....nothing still same message.
my service provider support couldnt help me with the issue.
So now I ask the experts of iWeb, what should I do?  :-)

Hey Roddy thanks for the tips.  So I tried with the service provider for quite while.  We resolved the issue that when I would do the test connection, it now says im ready to publish. (I told the service provider that "t doesn't sound as though your hosting service is very helpful so perhaps you would want to consider changing..."
Needless to say they helped me.
So I went ahead and started publishing and everything works well, with the exception of the Photos template.  I am reading in iwebformusicians to see what to do next.  Not sure why it does not show up.  I actually cleaned the cache, the it does not show up in the menu above, so I entered a hyperlink within the page, to hyperlink to an internal page and selected the photos page, and nothing came up, just a blank page.
Anyway I will address the photos in a separate discussion.

  • I keep getting a "Publish Error" message.

I am working on two sites with iWeb 08.
After I save my changes, and press the publish button on the iWeb 08 window, I end up getting the following message: "Publish Error" ... "There was an error updating .Mac."
    Anyone know what this is?
The sites seem to appear in Safari okay, but I'm not sure what this means.
    Thanks.

I figured it out. It's the publish button... if you use the menu item Publish All to .Mac, you may not get that message. It worked for me. I think three's some sort of bug in the regular Publish to .Mac feature.

  • Publish Error Please Try Again with /Media folders

Most of my problems (menu bars masked out, white lines going across photos, etc.) were solved by making a small change to the web page text and then reposting that to the .MAC site. However, when I try to republish my entire site I get a "Publish Error - Please Try Again Later" with the /Media directory of the first page in the list. If I make a change to that one page and just publish it there are no errors.

After nearly a week, my blogs published on .Mac via iWeb have returned this morning. They are complete and unaltered. Previous attempts to re upload them had systematically failed. I had written to Support and gotten an auto reply but no other response. I assume i will be hearing from Apple today. So this matter is concluded for me and I hope that others experiencing similar problems are also now seeing them fixed. If that is not the case and you have not written a service request email to Apple for .Mac support, I suggest you do so immediately. It worked for me.
Which brings me to the wrap up. Yes, like everyone else, I think Apple had a major epic screw up and it hurt me, a very very long time customer. But since this is the first time in 20 years that Apple has done anything other than make products that have made my personal and professional better; and since they are giving me a free month for the downtime, and also since you would have to have your head in your.... not to realize that despite the birthing pains, mobilme is amazing and will make things much easier for mobil professionals, not only do I NOT intend to drop my service, or even more hilarious, switch to some crappy PC environment, I consider the posters making those threats to really need a reality check about what they would be switching to and what they would give up. If they do switch, I wish them the best with their uptime. I have been with .Mac since rollout, this is the first hiccup in years. Apple has apologized, made good, fixed the problem and given me something even better for the same price. Time to get back to work in my new marvelous Mac workflow environment.

  • Publish Error: There was an error reading your iDisk quota

While trying publish to my .Mac account, iWeb gives me this message: Publish Error: There was an error reading your iDisk quota.
I published earlier to a group and it worked. I even went to my .Mac/iDisk system preferences on the web and alocated more space for my group site.
    No Dice.
I just tried publishing to .Mac without the group.
    No dice.
I even tried ellimanting some pages
    No Dice.
Hmmm. Frustrating. It worked before, now what?

i followed these steps recommended by mac support and it solved my problem. try it.
We are currently investigating an issue affecting some users who receive an error message while trying to publish a page or site using iWeb. The error states: "There was an error reading your iDisk quota."
Before we proceed with the steps to resolve this issue, we recommend that you back up the iWeb data file. If you already have this file backed up, you may skip to "Resolving the issue" below.
To locate the iWeb data file:
    1. From the Finder menu bar, select Go > Go to Folder.
    2. Type (or copy and paste) ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb into the field and click Go. You should now see a file named Domain. This file may also appear as Domain.sites, but we will refer to it as Domain throughout these instructions.
If you have the Backup application that is included with .Mac, you can use this to back up the file to your iDisk, CD/DVD, or to an external hard disk.
Note: Though there is an iLife plan in Backup, it does not currently back up the files associated with iWeb. To back up iWeb files, you will need to use either the Custom or Home Folder plan.
If you do not have Backup, you can create a copy of the file and place the copy in a safe place. To duplicate the Domain file, click the file once to highlight it, then select Duplicate from the File menu. This will create a copy of the file named, "Domain copy." Move this file to the desktop or any other safe location.
    Resolving the issue:
    1. Quit iWeb if it is open.
    2. From the Finder menu bar, select Go > Go to Folder.
    3. Type (or copy and paste) ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb into the field and click Go. You should now see a file named Domain. This is a Mac OS X package file.
Note: A package is a relatively common type of document in Mac OS X; it is essentially a sealed folder. It contains individual items, but cannot be opened in the same manner as a folder.
    4. To open the package, hold down the Control key and click on the Domain package file.
Note: If you have a two-button mouse, this step can be accomplished by right-clicking the Domain package file.
    5. Select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu that appears.
    6. A new window titled Domain will appear showing the contents of the package. Here you will see one file (or possibly two files) named "assets.<membername>.groups.<groupname>.plist" or "assets.<membername>.plist" where <membername> and <groupname> correspond to your .Mac member name and .Mac Group name.
Note: Your .Mac member name is the first part of your .Mac email address, before "@mac.com."
    7. If you have either or both of these files, move them to the trash. Then close the Domain window.
    8. Open iWeb and try publishing again.

  • "Missing File" and Publishing errors

Okay...I'm having two problems and they are becoming INCREDIBLY frustrating. The first one occurs when opening iWeb (1.1.2). I receive an error that reads as follows:
"The following errors occurred while trying to open this document:
    Type: Missing File
    Description: unnamed"
It gives me the option to continue, which I do and all seems to work well.
That is until recently. Beginning this October 19th, for no apparent reason, iWeb decided to give me a new error whenever I try to publish: "Publish Error: An unknown error occurred"...nice, "unknown", what do I do with that??
I am a teacher, and I depend on this website to maintain contact with my students and parents. This is so aggravating. I need to publish my sites!
    Can anyone out there help??

  • Publish Error message

I tried to publish a new page of photos, and got an error message that said:
Publish Error - Can't create the file "captionimage_13.png." The disk may be damaged, full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.
I had just published a blog page successfully. I was able to publish the photo page to a folder in the desktop. I opened that and the only png files I could find were images that were in the template, eg. the Mac symbol, and the frames for the photos. Is "captionimage_13.png" referring specifically to one of my photos or one of my captions? If so, how can I isolate the error?
    Can someone help me, please.

    Hi Geraldine...
I think you may mean megabytes rather than kilobytes when you refer to your file sizes. I suppose it is possible that the limited free space on your iDisk is causing your troubles. I have heard of people who are using the trial .Mac accounts say this (they are only given 50mb instead of 1gb in the standard .Mac membership).
What you can try to test this theory is to delete your currently published site completely from your iDisk. Then try to publish. Here are the steps to do this...
    1. Mount your iDisk to your Desktop (type Apple-Shift-i) or use the Go menu>iDisk>My iDisk
    2. Double click on the iDisk icon to open it up
    3. Find the Web folder and double click to open it up. You should see two folders: Sites and RSS
    4. Open each of these two folders and delete all of the contents. This will clear out all traces of your published site.
Now you can try to publish again.
Keep in mind that doing this will take your existing site offline completely until you are able to publish it again.

  • Unable to prepare for publishing error -2125

In Imovie when trying to burn a dvd to idvd... I get Unable to prepare for publishing error -2125.  Can you help please?

The thumb drive is probably formatted as FAT32 (most USB flash drives are formatted as FAT32). There is a 4GB file size limit with any drives formatted as FAT32. Try reformatting the thumb drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the Mac app Disk Utility (it comes with the OS and should be in the Utilities folder).
Also, are you sure that the 32GB drive is enough space for your exported movie? Try exporting it to your internal drive, or an external portable drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then copy it to the thumb drive, provided that the exported file will fit on it.
Otherwise, you will need to follow Karsten's advice to duplicate the project one or more times, then delete portions from each duplicate so that you end up with a number of separate projects, each with their individual content. Then export each project separately.
To duplicate a project, while in Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), select File > Duplicate Project. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on the project in the Library and select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu.
If you need assistance with reformatting the thumb drive, please ask.

  • Unknown publish error?

    Hi everyone
I've spent the last 12 hours trying to update my podcast but everytime I try to publish from iWeb 1.1.2 I get this:
    *Publish error*
    *An unknown error occured*
Also when I try to access the podcast page in firefox I get the page not found error, although I can open it via safari
Any idea what's going on? - I need to publish this podcast now as it's a competition which ends this week...

I had exactly the same problem but managed to resolve it. This is what I did:-
    1. Go to to 'Go' menu in Finder and click 'Go to Folder'
    2. Copy and past the following into the box: ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
    3. Drag the Domain file into the trash.
    4. Restart iWeb and publish to .mac
The only problem is that this deletes the old site info. For me this didn't matter as I only used the site for holidays photos, but it is obviously more of a problem if you have a more substantual site.

  • Publishing Error Issues

I've noticed a number of folks in the forum have been getting some of the same publishing error msgs but I haven't seen any clear cut answers to how to resolve them or what the problem might be. I can't publish anything since I upgraded to iLife 06. I keep getting the same "Publish Error" msgs for index.htm and the navbar. Has anyone figured out what might be the problem. I've tried repairing permissions and even reinstalling and still nothing. Would appreciate any ideas/suggestions/workarounds. Thanks.

    iMac G5 1.8GHz and PowerBook 15" 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I tried that… what i did find out after working with it for over 8 hours today was... the image files were not brought over or converted correctly.
How did I find this out?
I created a new domain with the iWeb. so now there is two domains. I then copied page by page to create a new mirror of the old site. It worked in the old version... So I did this in the new current version after the update. Not all the images were copied when I copied the information. So this tells me that iWeb is not converting or working with the image file as it did in the previous version. I also noticed the part of the error is related to the navigation at the top of the pages. It did not convert properly. Different pages were slightly different in the navigation menu. I find this weird as each of my pages were exactly the same before the conversion. Some of the images had place holders.. not the image.
When I created a website from scratch, it would publish... so the problem is in the conversion process and what it does to the image file. This is what I can find as of today. i believe this is due to a complete change in file structure from on version to the other. I call this poor design. We have seen this already when tried to move other files when using iLife files… the designers of this program said you should not move files... if this is the case… then why create a program with a completely different file structure?
    This is very poor.
So as of right now... the only way for me to use the new version of iWeb would be to copy and paste parts and pieces from the old pages to the new pages.

  • Need publishing error help - new user.

I am new to the mac world having just purchased a MacBook, signed up with a mac account, and am trying to test load a very simple 2 page web site. I continue to get publishing errors (different file names sometimes appear when I retry to publish). Nothing shows up on my idisk, so nothing is getting through. I have tried to publish about a dozen times over the last couple of days. I note others have had similar errors. Since space is not an issue on my idisk and the site is so small, I'm not sure what to try next. Any ideas? Thanks.<

Dr. B.. this fixed about 90% of the publishing errors for me.
    Hope this helps...

    “iDisk Quota Error” fix
    A. Quit iWeb, if it is open. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu.
Then type (or copy and paste) ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb into
the field and click Go. You should now see a file named, Domain.
(or you could just do it manually by opening the hard disk, open the Users folder, then open the Folder with your user name on it, open the Library folder, open the application support folder, open the iweb folder, and then you should be looking at the DOMAIN file.)
This is a Mac OSX package file. Note: A package is a relatively common type of document in Mac OSX; it is essentially a sealed folder. It contains individual items, but cannot be opened in the same manner as a folder.
    B. To open the package, hold the Control Key and click on the Domain package file. Note: If you have a two-button mouse, this step can be accomplished by right-clicking the Domain package file.
    C. Select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu that appears.
    D. A new window will appear containing a folder named Contents.
    E. Open the Contents folder. Here you will see one, and possibly two files named assets.<membername>.groups.<groupname>.plist or assets.<membername>.plist, where <membername> and <groupname> correspond to your .Mac member name and .Mac Group name. Note: Your .Mac member name is the first part of your .Mac email address, before "@mac.com."
NOTE FROM ME... I didn’t find these files in the Contents folder, I found
them when I opened the Domain File itself. Whatever.. when you find one,
or maybe both of these files, delete them. (some people have both, some
    have one)
    F. If you have either or both of these files, move them to the trash. Then close
    the Contents window.
    G. Relaunch iWeb and try publishing again.
