Publishing error - unable to publish iWeb 08 site

After re-making my 30 page site using iWeb 08 due to it destroying my iWeb 07 Domain file - I have tried repeatedly to publish the new site without success. Usually I wait 1.5 hrs while the progress bar goes slowly around, then I invariably get a message saying there ways an "error connecting to the server or network error". It takes 1.5 hrs to tell me this?
However I clearly am connected to the .Mac server because I get the message earlier on stating that "publishing will continue in the background". Somehow the .Mac server doesn't accept the Domain file. I have published the Domain to a folder on my desktop and the site works fine on the browser when I launch it using the index html file.
I have sent several iWeb feedback messages concerning this problem so hopefully the boffins will fix it. I have no intention of renewing my .Mac subscription if the Domain file can't actually be published.
If anyone out there is experiencing the same problem please let me know.

It's hit or miss with me. My web site is about 30 pages, and about every 4th or 5th time I publish, I get either a "Publish Error. An unknown error occurred." or something about a locked file, try again later. It usually is fixed by choosing to Publish All to .Mac and enduring the 30 minutes or so it takes to process. This last time, however, it got done with the upload (about 100MB) and looked fine. Next time I tried to update one page: bang.
I'm publishing a blog so the situation can only get worse as pages accumulate.
There is clearly something wrong and clearly somebody is grasping at straws trying to fix it. Until the engineers at Apple figure out what the problem is and releases a definitive patch, I think we're out of luck.

    Dave?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    3 - reboot.
4 - launch iWeb and see if you can publish.
    If that doesn't help continue:
5 - move the domain file from your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
6 - launch iWeb, create a new test site and save.
7 - go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
8 - move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
9 - launch iWeb and try again.

  • Publising Error Unable to use iWeb to post photos

I had no problem posting my images to my web page using iphoto ie
    http://homepage.mac.com/michaelcampbellphoto/Menu172.html
But since upgrading to te latest and greatest ! I have not been able to publish my images I have tried a dozen times and each time I get the message that there was a PUBLISHING ERROR and each time it indicates a different file .
Frankly I wish i could go back to the old system that worked. Since I use this as a tool in my photo business to show my customers proofs, it is very frustrating. CAN ANYONE HELP???
    Thanks

    MCC...
"and each time it indicates a different file"... when this happens in the podcast publishing realm, it's because of a preference file corruption problem. Quicktime Kirk is right about the usual suspects on the photo side, but your comment about it being a different file makes me think it's something else.
    Try this...
    Close iWeb
    follow this path
    hard disk/users/username/library/application support/iweb/DOMAIN
open the domain file by holding down the CONTROL key and clicking on it ONCE
you'll get a new window pop up, select SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
find a file that is named something like "assets.yourusername.plist"
Yourusername is the account you use on your local mac. When you find this file, throw it away.
Open iWeb and republish. Also... don't use the mac for anything else while publishing, take your idisk off the desktop if it's on, and go to system preferences/energy saver and set both slide bars to NEVER. Also, while you're in system preferences, set your SCREEN SAVER to never. Finally, while your in system preferences, go to .MAC and set your idisk syncing to OFF.
iWeb is a bandwidth and CPU hog. The only time I get those progressive error messages that show me a different file is messed up each time, is when I'm using the computer while publishing, my screen saver or energy saver is on while publishing, or that preference file is messed up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Publish Error Workaround - Manually Publish to .Mac

If you are having problems publishing your iWeb sites, you can manually publish to .Mac and still get all of the special .Mac-only features by following these steps:
    1) Choose "Publish All to .Mac" from the file menu.
    2) As soon as you get the message that your site upload will continue in the background, open Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    3) In Terminal type:
    open /var/tmp
    4) A Finder window will open. Find the folder called "folder.SomeNumber". Open it and then open the TemporaryItems folder. In it should be several folders called com.apple.iWebSome_LongNumber. In one of them you will find a folder called "sites" that contains all of your sites from iWeb ready to upload to .Mac.
    5) Copy (Option-Drag) this "sites" folder to your desktop
    6) Now you can upload the contents of that folder to the proper location on your iDisk (the correct path is iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/)
I hope this helps some of you get your sites published. It worked for me.
    -Chad

Hi geebee - bit long winded but this is the full fix that I wrote up for someone else - it worked for them so good luck.
    1. To create a new login, open system preference folder and open accounts. Unlock by clicking on the padlock icon. Now click on the plus icon which will allow you to create a new login name and password. Tick allow user to administer computer. Lock the padlock again and close window.
    2. Go to apple logo top left of screen and logoff your username - you will be prompted shortly with choice of logins and choose the new one - you get a fresh screen which looks like when you first switched on the mac. You can test iweb here by publishing any old template to see if it works. It should do. Assuming all is ok, this next is how to publish your existing site.
    3. Go back to your normal login. Find the domain file and copy it to dvd - domain file can be found as follows: open finder > click on house icon (yourname) >click on library >click on application support >click on iweb and here you will find domain file - copy it.
    4. Log out and log on to new login again - find domain file in this system and delete it then in its place put your copy domain file from the dvd. When you open iweb in this system you should see your web files and hopefully you should now be able to publish them. This is where I succeeded.
    5. If successful I have since discovered that you can do the reverse - ie. delete the domain file from your main login - copy domain file from your new login and put it back in the original system. I found this shook off whatever the problem was. I have also discovered since that I seem to have lost some functionality in that the slide shows don't seem to work now so I guess I might have to rebuild some of the pages - but the important thing is it will now publish.
Hope you can follow this and hope you have the success I had. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with, and let me know if it works.

  • XML Publisher Error with reports published in XML publisher

    Hi All,
I am geting the following error with a report published using XML Publisher
The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
The system cannot locate the resource specified. Error processing resource 'http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.d...
    How can i Rectify this?

    Hi Ark,
In order to generate a report using xml publisher. we need the following.
    1. XML Data
    2. Template file (RTF/PDF/..)
XML data will not be created by the template file.
We will be required to create XML data. One of the easiest way to create xml output is using the RDF. We can change the rdf output type in the concurrent program to XML.
Once the xml and the template is available, "XML Report Publisher" will be able to generate the output in the required format.
    Thanks,

  • Site files moved to new (identical) server; now iWeb gives "Publish Error"

Our school district just replaced the web server where our teachers publish iWeb sites. All user accounts, passwords, IP addresses, and content moved over just fine, but now when teachers try to publish updates to their existing sites on the new server, iWeb throws a "Publish Error: Unable to communicate with FTP server..." error. Test Connection in the publishing settings works fine, as does logging in to the server using an FTP application, so we know the user accounts are okay.
An interesting twist: I published my existing site (that was experiencing this issue) to a local folder on my desktop, and used a standalone FTP application to upload and replace my iWeb site files manually; when I went in and set the iWeb publishing settings back to FTP server, it was again able to publish updates to the site without issue.
We're looking into a permissions problem on the files that were moved from the old server but so far have not been able to find any differences.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on? We have a couple hundred people this is affecting and if it's something we can fix on the back-end instead of having to manually replace all of those site files, that would be a great thing!

The only time that I had to move a bunch of sites to a new server I was instructed by tech support to download all the sites/files and upload them to the new location.
I would assume that, if you don't do this, the permissions could get messed up.
My hosting service uses Webshell4 to manage files on the server. To change permissions you need to select the site folder in Webshell4 and click the "CHMOD" button to get a window that allows you to do this.
Read permissions should be checked for User, Group and Other.
Write permissions would normally be set for User only.
You could try this with one site to see if this is what's required but your hosting service tech support should really help you with this. That's what they are there for.

  • IWeb 08 won't publish my site when "private" - "Publish Error"

I have created two sites in iWeb. The first is for general viewing, the second (still under construction) is to be restricted by "Make my published site private" username and password. I can publish both sites as "open sites" without problem, but when I try to publish after I check the privacy box for Site 2, I get a "Publish Error" during the publishing process. Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Strange! Cannot update extensive, published iWeb site.

I've been trying to research a problem in Discussions similar to my own but cannot come across a satisfactory answer.
For the past two weeks, I've experienced very slow "Publish" updating of my extensive iWeb site. In the last 24 hours, I've been unable to update the webiste at all. Here's the error message:
"Can’t create the file 'shapeimage2_link2.png.' The disk may be damaged, full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges."
Mind you, I'm well sort of my iDisk capacity, have the current version of iWeb, am running a reliable high-speed connection and have not experienced any hard disk problems that I'm aware of.
I have tried trashing the username/application support/iWeb/Domain file and letting iWeb build a new Domain file — to no avail. I've quit and rebooted — to no avail. I've run Disk Utility — to no avail.
    Suggestions? I'm at wit's end!

Thanks, James, for your always helpful replies and information.
Paul, here are two things I tried with some success. I deleted new blog material — those which hadn't published — and added, then published, each new blog one at a time. Somewhere along the line, one of the new blogs apparently corrupted the ability to publish all of them at once. Also, I launched iWeb, put the Domain file (username/application support/iWeb/Domain) in the trash then published. When prompted to save the new Domain file, I chose the folder where the old one resided. Subsequent publishes have gone a bit smoother.
Still, one wishes iWeb were easier and more reliable for updates.

  • Error when Publishing iWeb Site (iWeb 1.1.2)

I am consistently unable to publish my website. The following is the most recent error:
An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site/Worcester, MAfiles/_MG0611.jpg”.
Before this one, it was a different jpg image that caused the publish to fail. I feel like three pictures have made the publish fail. I have done nothing different, I just try to keep publishing.
These are the most recent changes that might have effected something:
    1. I upgraded to Leopard.
    2. I edited three pages, removed one page, and added two additional pages.
    3. I did not finish publishing after these changes because I had to board a plane.
    4. I uploaded pictures to my computer, and then ran out of space.
    5. I had troubles, but with Apple Discussion help (thank you) I was able to install my external hard drive, utilize Time Machine, and free up space on my hard drive. (I now have 21G on my internal drive available)
    6. I moved iTunes music folder to external
    7. I added more photos to iphoto, and added another page.
I have tried to publish several times unsuccessfully. Twice, my network went down. The other times, I get a file error (always a different file). And these were pages I did not even touch.
My entire website is now "red", meaning it needs to be published.

  • How do I fix an error "4652747.png" when publishing my iWeb site to iMac?

Every time I try to publish my iWeb site to .Mac I get an error message that says there's an error in " ...files/ca4652747.png." I know this is an image file, but when i search for it on my hard drive it shows a blank image. I've tried deleting the file from the hard drive but when I re-publish, a second file "c00ff001c.png" on a different web page shows the same error. I can't figure out how to fix these errors. It publishes to a folder, or so it says, but i don't know how to check that. I am supposed to publish the entire site at the end of this week and have all the work done but can't get past this point. Can anyone help me? I'm a new mac user and this is my first shot at web design, so I've probably missed something obvious, but would appreciate any help.

    k, try this:
backup your domain file! delete the one in the folder BUT HAVE A COPY OF IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. Then open iWeb, create something save it and publish it!
now go to your backuped file, make one more backup!!!!
move one of the backuped files into the Users/username/bblablabla folder and open iWeb. try publish all and see if it works!

  • An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/Jim and Steph's Si

I'm guessing this is a common message most see when they try to publish their website. Reason I say this, is it is the only message I have recieved in the last week when trying to use this faulty software.
Here it is again if you missed it:
An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Jim and Steph's Site/Jim's Blog”.
I got this MacBook week ago yesterday. Totally excited to share pictures and blog information. Spent 99 dollars or close to it for a mac account to simply share this information on the web. The first four pages (all pictures), I published worked well. Then I updated to iWeb 1.1.1 and tried to publish with blogs and more pictures and it won't work. Now all that I published before does not even come up. I emailed support here on mac.com and got the generic reply that I have already read on this forum. I tired as many fixes as I could to no avail. Two questions:
    1. Any ideas to fix this problem?
    2. Can you get your money back?
    Sorry this was so long.
    Thanks everyone,
    Jim B

    Jim...
Try doing a "Publish All to .Mac" if nothing else works for you. And if I could make a recommendation, it probably wouldn't be a bad thing to simplify your site name (Jim and Steph's Site) and eliminate the apostrophes (also in Jim's Blog). A longer site URL with complexities such as punctuation and spaces and even capitalization can potentially wreak havoc on your site navigation and function. Simplifying your site and page names will at the very least lead to shorter and more recognizable URLs...and when you start to add more pages it will also make the navigation menu at the top of your pages look "cleaner". Think simple names, like "oursite" and "HeSays" or "SheSays"
    Just a suggestion.

  • Publish Error - An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/X"

    Hello everyone,
I've been using mac for about 10 years now and have finally decided to try out this iWeb application. Spent several hours putting the site together... fun... but when I hit the publish button, the following error popped up.
    Publish Error
An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/X". (X being my site name which also happens to be my .mac account name.
So I've spent another 3 hours trying it over and over again but still no luck. So I've searched this forum and see if there's any tips. Found a lot of solutions but none of them seem to help. I've deleted all the folders and file on my 'Sites' folder on the iDisk. Closed all running apps before hitting the 'Publish' button. And I've even deleted all my work and tried just to upload the 'welcome' page. Still doesn't work.
I'm getting a bit annoyed... Are there any solutions for my problem??

Probably not. No big deal, really. The important thing is we have been able to get your site on the .Mac server, albeit in the homepage directory.
Ok here's your last assignment. This will also take awhile, but when you are finished your site will be up on .Mac and accessible using the web.mac.com/username/iWeb/sitename url.
Since you have already initiated a publish to .Mac from iWeb, the root directory for iWeb should be on your iDisk. You should be able to navigate to the iWeb folder following this path:
    Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SiteFolder
"SiteFolder" should be a folder named for the site you are having trouble publishing.
On your desktop, open the Site folder that iWeb delivered when you published the original site using the Publish to a Folder... command. You will see a number of folders in there and a number of page.html files. Drag each of these into the Site Folder mentioned earlier, on the iDisk. (The one named for the site). The root index.html file, (the one published outside of the Site folder) needs to be placed in the Web/Sites folder; you should see it in the column above the iWeb folder when done. Basically, you are "manually" uploading your site. It's cumbersome and a royal pita, but if successful, this exercise will confirm what I have suspected all along:
The problem is a latency/time-out error. (The actual error message itself is misleading and somewhat immaterial--iWeb probably chose it randomly). Lots of things contribute to it, but basically, iWeb gets tired of waiting on the WebDav protocol and then generates an error message. I wish I could be more specific, but that's about as close as I can get to the core issue. Many folks publish successfully from your area of the world; just keep trying, and when all else fails, you can always swap out the changed files manually following the method outlined above.
