Publishing Iweb 08

Hello everybody.
Having trouble publishing a web site we built in Iweb 06. We changed to one of the new templates and added a couple of new pages. Have tried to approx 4 times and every time it results in crashing Iweb before it publishes. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks david

Unless you have a backup copy of the pre-updated Domain.sites file, you may be in trouble. Have you tried publishing to a folder?
If by chance you have a backup, duplicate it and then update the copy (rename it Domain.sites2, from Domain copy.sites2) in iWeb08, and without doing any changes to the site execute a Publish all to .Mac. If you are successful, make a backup copy of the new Domain.sites2 file, put it in a safe place, and try again with your new templates/changes.

With as many people that have this same issue, I am very surprised that support is still sleeping at the wheel.  Some of the suggestions border on the absolute absurd (e.g. create new user account, check the system clock, etc.).  I've tried them all, including exclusion from AVAST, resetting router, etc etc etc.  iCloud status shows all green.
As the owner of a software development company, I find it hard to believe Apple, of all support, has been unable to get this issue resolved once and for all.  It would certainly make sense, as well, to collate this issue into a single thread instead of bouncing users off the moon and back.
I spent 1/2 day on the phone with Apple support trying to get iTunes to backup and was promised a call back from the next tier of support.  That was 4 months ago and I still haven't been able to backup my iphone 4S.  I've never seen software that is more kludgy and unreliable with every passing upgrade (sorry, but it's the truth)!
After two years of not being able to back up my phone, I am considering going to a more reliable platform.  After 6 years on the Apple bus, maybe it's time to get off.

Have published iweb site for five years with no problems and just opened a new site and get -
    404: Page not found
This error is generated when there was no web page with the name you specified at the web site.-
    Troubleshooting suggestions:
Ensure the page you are linking to exists in the correct folder.
Check your file name for case sensitivity . Index.htm is not the same as index.htm!
Temporarily disable any rewrite rules by renaming your .htaccess file if it exists
    is the problem with
    iweb or with hosting?
One Apple tech started to fix Iweb and had to end session and the next said problem with hosting at Network Solutions as it published
to local folder. NWS has checked sttting a few times-
Any help would be extremely appreciated as trying to fix this for about five weeks

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. (Even though I've now noticed you mis-spelled it! - anyway, never post your address in a forum.)
You have a site here: http://virginiagordon.com/www.virginiagordon.com/WELCOME.html
If that's not the page you are having trouble with, what is that page's URL?

How to publish iWeb to iCloud?

iCloud does NOT allow you to host your web sites. You can continue to use iWeb but, will need a 3rd party web host to upload your websites to. Depending on the version of iWeb you are using you have a couple of publishing options:
iWeb '09 (3.0.4) you can publish to an FTP Server or a local folder. ( With the built in FTP in iWeb you will end up with an address like "www.YourDomain.com/sitename/Home.html )
iWeb '08 you can publish your website to a local folder
I have been using IX Webhosting for several years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across. The have plans that start at $3.95 a mo (USD) and their customer service is top notch.

    Mybe Google or woodpress,
Or publish iWeb online with iCloud WITHOUT upgrading Lion?

iWeb will still be around but as Jeff pointed out if you want a blog with visitors comments you should consider converting your iWeb blog to  WordPress.  Rage Software has created an applicaiton that will convert your current iWeb blog w/visitor comments to a Wordpress blog. You can get the application here: Convert Your iWeb Blog to a WordPress Blog.
If you don't have visitor comments then the iWeb blog will continue to work for you on a 3rd party FTP server.
If you have photo pages in your website with the accompanying slideshow you'll need to read the following:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

  • I can't publish - iWeb crashes every time I try

For the past 3 days, each time I try to publish, iWeb begins republishing all the pages and then just quits. I have been using the program for many months now and everything was fine. I added a lot of new photos. Could that be the problem? As far as I can tell, that is all I did. Any suggestions for getting back to my blog?

  • Publishing iWeb pages from 2 different Macs

I have recently bought a MacBook to complement my G4 Powermac desktop - the desktop has iLife05 installed and the MacBook iLife06.
I am really enjoying using the iWeb application and would like to be able to publish iWeb pages from both my MacBook and my desktop mac. Is there anyway I can get iLife06 transferred onto my desktop. I have already been firewiring files between the two - can I do the same with software or do I need to buy iLife all over again?

    Hi James,
Your response definitely helped me since my boss and I are trying to maintain a website on both of our computers...
BUT, i have a huge problem. Before I knew how to transfer or find the domain files, I used the "FIND" option to search for the domain site on my computer and when i clicked it open, my site didn't come up but rather a prompt asking me what type of website I'd like to create. For months, the website we created showed up every time I opened iweb but now when i simply clicked on domain.site or whatever it was that turned up in the "Find" folder, I can't bring up or locate the site I created on the computer so I have no way to update it or put it on a disc for my boss... Do you have any idea what caused my site to disappear simply by clicking on domain or any idea where i could find my site??
    please help!! thanks!
    Vanessa
one more thing: is it possible for my boss to edit the content of the website without iweb? could she do it through the actual website with a password or something? just curious... also if i can't get that original domain site back, is there a way i can transfer my website to a different website other than iweb so that i can keep updating without having to redo the whole thing? even being able to transfer separate blogs from iweb to the original site would work too - anything to not have to redo the welcome page and picture pages that are already online

When I view my published iWeb site the hyperlinks do not all have the same formatting as they did in iWeb. How can I resolve this?

Hello, I am using iWeb 3.0.4 (601). I publish the website to my local machine (from iWeb) so I can send it off to someone more technical to publish to the internet and manage all of the 'optimisation' etc. This is where I am seeing it is not as it looks within iWeb. Can I 'send' it to you somehow? Thanks for your response.

  • Published iWeb Blog and Snow Leopard

Published iWeb with iLife 08 to Mobile Me. Want to continue publishing to this site, but can't get Snow Leopard to connect to the iWeb published page. Don't think I should have to start over to add more content.

Snow Leopard is an operating system and isn't used to connect to web pages. What did you do and what do you want to do?
Did you install Snow Leopard and lose your ability to use iWeb to edit your site? If so you need to get a copy of the Domain.sites file that iWeb 08 used to create the site in order for you to be able to continue editing. It's located in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
If you don't have that file then you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch. If that's the case Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.
If you don't have a backup maybe it's time to consider and begin a backup strategy.

  • New computer, how can I sync my old published iWeb page with new compuer?

I had my old macbook stolen a year ago in Italy. I created and published an iWeb page to .mac on that computer. My problem is that I cannot figure out how I can sync my old page on .mac to my new computer so that I can continue to use it and upload pics. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hello,
and welcome the Apple iWeb Discussion Forum.
Basically you can't figure it out because there is no way to get published pages back into iWeb. iWeb lacks of any html import feature. The only thing you can do is rebuild it by copying and pasting content from the published one to the rebuilt in iWeb. However for photopages that isn't a good idea, it's better to rebuild them from scratch (iPhoto).
Be sure to make a backup of the domain.sites2 file (where iWeb stores) its files from time to time

  • Publish iweb from another computer what am I doing wrong?

I am really struggling here, can someone please explain my problem to me....
I have two mac laptops with iweb. I asked about publishing my backed up blog on the 2nd mac in case number 1 mac crashes. here was my question...
how does the new computer know where to publish your site to... is the address in the backup file from the primary computer? if not how do you tell iweb on the second computer where to publish the primary computers site. Bobbie j.
I followed these instructions from helpers here
Copy the Domain file to another computer, but not to the default location, and then double-click the Domain file.
ok I did that but it wants to publish to the number 2 macs iweb address since i'm on that computer so then i was told the following
It doesn't know where to publish your site, which is why you need to be logged into your Mobile Me account before publishing. All you do is log in and publish and all sites are published to iDisk.
so I logged into my m. me account and then double clicked on the backup file in finder (flash usb memory backup) and iweb opens with the correct backed up site but it published it to the number 2 computers default iweb site (overwriting its own site with number 1 comp. site) even tho I had logged in to number one comp. iweb account. it was even open as a page under iweb page. help.
I get how to move my backup web file to a secondary computer but still can't get it to publish to number ones site. what am i missing please, it can't be this hard.
    bobbie j.

Firstly, iWeb is the tool that you use to create your web site or blog in your case. iWeb does not have any accounts. It is MobileMe that has the accounts and you log into your MMe account and then click publish within iWeb and your site is published through MMe to your iDisk - this is your host. If you publish to MMe, then all your sites and blog are published to your iDisk.
How many blogs do you want 1 or 2?
How many mobile me account do you have 1 or 2?
If you want two separate blogs on two computers, then to be able to publish separately you would need to change the names within iWeb at the top on the left hand side and then publish blog 1 and blog 2 separately. All MMe hosted sites will have the url web.me.com/username/sitename, so either site1 or site2.
I thought your question was asking how you can update your blog using two computers? If you want the same blog then you can just update from either and then publish. If you want different blog names, then call them blog 1 and 2 and publish.
Perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to have 2 totally separate MobileMe accounts, 1 for each computer, so that you can log into each MMe account on each computer and keep your blog totally separate - in this case with two MMe accounts you would publish to two iDisks, so you have blog 1 on computer 1 and blog 2 on computer 2, each with their own MMe account.

  • How can I publish iWeb site in root directory in place of a prior site?

Hi there... I have created a family web site and published it to my .mac account. The problem is that I had previously published another site and that site remains in the 'root' directory of my account. Practically, this means that if anyone types in:
    web.mac.com/[username]
... they will get my old site instead of the site i wish them to see... Is there any way I can move my new site so that typing the more simplified 'root' address (above) will bring up the site I wish for them to view?

Do you have both sites in iWeb together? If so, then simply look in the Site Organizer, select the site that you want to come up by the short URL and drag it to the top of the organizer. iWeb will make whatever site is at the top of the Site Organizer the default site. You should probably do a "Publish ALL to .Mac" after doing this so that all the files are in the right place. So once you do this you can access the default site with the short URL http://web.mac.com/yourname and then you can access the second site by using its URL directly... http://web.mac.com/yourname/iWeb/sitetwoname You could also provide links from site one to site two and vice versa to "link" the two sites together.

  • After I publish IWeb, unwanted hyperlinks show up in the published site.   How do I get rid of this worm?

I have noticed that no matter how hard I try to rid my published site of these hyperlinks (that I've never put in) certain words within the published site are highlighted and underlined and link to another source trying to sell something.  I've never put this in and think there is some kind of virus or worm on my Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion.  I've even deleted pages and started from scratch with a new page.  They are still showing up and multiplying.  HELP!  I'm on a Windows computer right now and don't know how to take a screen shot to show you how it works.  I hope my description is enough.

This has nothing to do with iWeb. These links are added on the server- probably due to the fact that you are using a "free" hosting service.
Contact your host to upgrade your account or choose another one with more appropriate facilities...

I can not publish a site because I get caught up in an endless loop asking me to sign-in. It gives me three options: Sign in; No thanks and Learn More. Jumping through all the hoops makes no difference, I still can not publish. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of your MMe account.
2 - log in with a bogus account name and password to clear the cache.
3 - log in with the correct account name and password.
4 - launch iWeb and try publishing again.
