Publishing iWeb Site on a Personal Domain

Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble publishing my site to a personal domain. I am using iWeb 08 and am publishing via MobileMe and domains.com is my host. For some reason, I just can't get the site to publish on my personal domain. My personal domain is registered on MobileMe and the CNAME is programmed into the domains.com DNS management area. What's going on that's not allowing it to appear?? The site is just blank...please help!

Works fine for me too, but not if you place the www before your domain name. If you want this too, you may need to go back to your DNS settings and set up a new CNAME for your domain name that includes the www part too, but only if you want to.

  • Publishing iWeb site to .Mac personal domain

I set up Personal Domain on .Mac & added the cname on my account with Network Solutions & are waiting for the changes to take effect now. But I have 2 sites in iWeb. How do I get the right site on the personal domain.

    Hi again,
My Problem is that it is not clear how to redirect mlwhall.com --> www.mlwhall.com
Since CNAME is for aliases, I am not sure how to point mlwhall.com since that is the root name. The A (host) will only take an IP address, so I assume that if I am going to do this I need to do it in the CNAME section (pinging did not get me a useable IP address). I cannot believe I am the only person that wants to do this -- setting up domain forwarding does not seem to work either
Is it not common for people to want to have www.blah.com and blah.com to resolve to the same place?
    ----Martin----
And yes -- I meant to say that I made a CNAME alias for www that points to web.mac.com as pointed out in the personal domain instructions.

  • Publish iweb site with out changing domain name?

When you go to my website (hmstechnology.com) it changes it to this:
    http://hmstechnology.com/hmstechnology/HOME.html
I was uploading via iWeb. Now I am ready to go back to filezilla so that I can just have my domain name remain hmstechnology.com when people visit.
Any suggestions on why Filezilla is changing my domain name, or iWeb for that matter? How can I fix this?
    Greatly appreciated,
    Phil

This is not so much an iWeb problem as a limitation of your server. If you switch to a hosting company that allows you to name your root folder the same as your domain name and you upload the files only, you will get the URL without the extra folder name.
Having the page name in the URL box is not really a big deal as nobody has to enter it into the browser. If your site is uploaded to a folder named - iberianpigati - and the domain name is pointed at the index.html file inside this folder, all that has to be entered into the browser is...
    iberianpigati.com
.... for anybody to get to your landing page.
As has been pointed out, you could forward your domain name using masking/cloaking but this is a very poor choice from the point of view of SEO and bookmarking. If you are more concerned with the look of your individual page URLs than people actually finding your site then masking would be the way to go.

  • Multipul iweb sites   problem with own domain name

    hello all
i have currently 2 iweb sites (my own personal one with my own personal domain) and another site which has a podcast for my self and flat mates
    the problem comes in this.
if i want to subscribe the podcast to itunes it trys to send it as www.garethmob.co.uk/flat6_band ect where the actuall band website does not sit on my own personal website
is there any way i can fix this by having the origional web.me.com/garethmob ect for one of the websites and the garethmob.co.uk for the other?
both are on my mobile me account
thanks for any help in advance
    Gareth

If you have more than on site on your iDisk and go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites, you will see that you have two website folders but only one index.html file.
If the domain name www.garethmob.co.uk (Site 1) is directed at that index.html file then that's the one that must exist in the Web/Sites folder.
When you upload another site (Site 2), its index.html file overwrites the existing one and the URL is then directed to the wrong site.
When you upload changes to the site with the MobileMe URL (Site 2), you must then upload a copy of the index.html file for the other site (Site 1) after doing this.
You can do this by publishing your Site 1 to a local folder and then put the index.html file inside a folder and trash the rest.
After you have uploaded changes to Site 2, go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites and upload a copy of the index.html file for Site 1 by drag and drop.

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. (Even though I've now noticed you mis-spelled it! - anyway, never post your address in a forum.)
You have a site here: http://virginiagordon.com/www.virginiagordon.com/WELCOME.html
If that's not the page you are having trouble with, what is that page's URL?

  • Published iWeb site the hyperlinks formatting

When I view my published iWeb site the hyperlinks do not all have the same formatting as they did in iWeb. How can I resolve this?

Hello, I am using iWeb 3.0.4 (601). I publish the website to my local machine (from iWeb) so I can send it off to someone more technical to publish to the internet and manage all of the 'optimisation' etc. This is where I am seeing it is not as it looks within iWeb. Can I 'send' it to you somehow? Thanks for your response.

  • I want more than one site, all with personal domain names

I have a dot mac account and I created a personal website using iweb (www.personalname.com) and now I would like to make a site for my business using iweb (www.businessname.com). Is that even possible? I've followed directions from other people. i know that I need to go into iweb and under file click new site and choose the templates and so on. But once I do all of that, I click publish and a box comes up and says this new site will now be published under your www.personalname.com.
Am I missing something, or do I have to buy a completely new dot mac account for my business? Someone please help and walk me through this.
    Thanks a bunch!

As Wyodor suggested have your domain name provider activate domain name forwarding for the second site. You'll need to open that site in your browser and get the actual URL to give the provider for forwarding.
To make it easier to edit and publish individual sites I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
If you expect a lot of traffic to your business site you might want to consider having it hosted on a commercial hosting site that will not be bogged down with all of the bells and whistles that the MobileMe servers are in order to provide all of the special features. A commercial server will be faster and more reliable. Depending on where you purchase your business domain name you can host it on their servers.

  • Problem with iWeb after associating a personal domain name with my MobileMe

I think I did this by the book. I associated my personal domain name with my MobileMe account, then changed the CName pointer at GoDaddy to MobileMe (MM), then went back to MM and hit 'Done'. iWeb now lists my MM account as 'My account name (personal domain name). It took a little while for the DNS pointer to propogate, but now I can go to a browser, type in my personal domain name, and MM delivers my iWeb website as I wanted it to, apparently from my domain, not web.me.com. The problem is, as soon as the DNS propogated, MM delivers my MM site OK, but iWeb can't find the files for it anymore. All my pages immediately went red (unpublished) when I tried to update the site, and any attempt to Publish gives me this error "iWeb couldn’t connect to MobileMe. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again." I'm cable connected to an ADSL router, and Airport connected to a cable router, and neither service has dropped out. I've rebooted, and retried, and the website is up under my own domain, so GoDaddy and MM both got it right. What did I do wrong? Thanks, someone... anyone?

This is now sort of resolved, but not very satisfactorily. One of the trainers at my local Appple Store found an old support issue in the archives going back to 2008, which blamed security settings for update problems. Coincidental with associating MobileMe with my personal domain, I had checked the privacy box and added an ID and PW to the site. That was the problem, not the personal domain, that was preventing iWeb from finding my MM account. Uncheck that box and my site happily updates. Of course, now I have a site that I cannot make private. In this case, not a show-stopper, but disappointing. I have reported it as a bug in the latest version of iWeb. Thanks for your help.

  • How do I go about hosting an iWeb site on my own domain?

I have never "posted" or tried to post anywhere on Web before. Forgive me if I don't follow a protocol that I should.
I just published an update of a site. The original site I can't change by myself. I made the new one on iweb thinking it would go to www.capellidanglifoundation.org - instead it is found at this unwieldy place: http://web.mac.com/marciareidmarsted/CapellidAngeli_FoundationSite/Welcome.html -
I did make a Netscape site in 2001 which is now at http://www.aboutmyhair.net, but someone else did the uploading for me.
how do I post to my own domain?
I have made another updated site. It is ready to upload to www.marciareidmarsted.com - and I don't want it to go to another long address.
I thought they had fixed it at the apple store at West Farms Mall, but I guess not.
Thanks for any help you can give - I did see someone with the same problem, so it is probably not that unusual.

  • How to publish changes when using a personal domain

    Hi,
I am about to publish my first website using MobileMe but with a personal domain.

Do I use the File>Publish to MobileMe option or some other method ?

Yes. You can read more about using personal domains with iWeb here.

  • IWeb and using my personal domain name.

I have never published a web site before and this is a first time for me.
With having iWeb version 8 installed I have created a website with photos etc.
I have also registered a domain name to use my personal name. This is the one and only web-site I have published.
The name has been set up for forwarding with the CName as web.mac.com with the host site in the section of ‘Masked forwarding’
And in my personal settings in the account manager on .Mac the correct name has been entered to use for my iWeb site. For example www.anthonyjhowe.com which is my registered name.
In the iWeb application under file I have published all my pages to .mac.
In my iDisk folder on the Internet there is a folder named “web/sites and inside this folder, there is my gallery but also a folder named AnthonyJHowe, this has all my pages I created in iWeb.
There is another folder named “iWeb. But inside this there is one file named sites.rss, and that is all. This is replicated on my iDisk on my desktop.
Now in iWeb when I publish all to .Mac I receive a message that my site can be visited using my domain name and would I like to visit or announce the site. This lists all the pages I have published.
When I click on visit, it takes me to the .Mac welcome screen and not my site.
That’s how far I have got. It’s been over 72 hours since I registered the domain name.
I have searched and read some posts about this but I don’t seem to go any further with this.
Could you give some suggestions please and perhaps point me in the right direction?

This iWeb’s Domain Forwarding feature that has you publish the site to your .Mac account and then uses your domain name as an alias for your Web site should be relative simple procedure, but with quite a lot of posts on this subject, including myself is not easy to set up and it should be as iWeb 08 is a consumer product. There is little information about this at present.
Getting in touch with the registrars can be quite daunting and eventually you may get one person in the office that may be able to help you. Apple's information to suggest you contact the Registrar of you domain host to create a CNAME does not help an ordinary consumer either.
My issue with the Personal Domain feature is that it places the burden of making the switch on the user, and it is far from a straightforward process and my unfortunate lack of experience has led me to ask the question in the first place.
This discussion forum seems to be the only place that gets close to helping you out.
As it stands, the instructions from Apple are extremely vague, mostly advising you to contact your domain name registrar. They give no indication of what to expect or do if things that aren’t working correctly. And that's why a lot ask the question in the first place in this discussion forum. However those who have experience in dealing with these matters may not always see your post.
I can usually work out problems to do with computing, but to be honest this one has me beat and yet it should be and probably is a simple procedure to carry out. But there is either very little information to carry out the procedure or confusing information elsewhere that makes the mind boggle.
The link below is the only information I can find from Apple to help you, unless someone knows of other information.

  • Publishing one site to a public domain and a different site to .mac

    Hello,
I previous had a personal website on .mac created with iWeb, everything works great. I also volunteer for a profession society local section and recently made them a new website using my version of iWeb as well. I just created a new site under the file menu. I am using my .mac account to host it in the demo stage for the society. We now want to publish to a public domain but when I select "Publish to a Folder" I get both sites; my personal website of home photos and movies plus the society website. Needless to say the folder is huge and I only want one of the two sites.
?? Is there way of indicating to only publish one site to a folder and not all ??
    Thank you

I found the answer down in the question on iWebSites.

  • How to redirect viewers to my iWeb site on a new domain?

I've moved my website to a new domain with a new Web host (which was much easier than I expected). Now, I'd like to redirect anyone who clicks on my old site to my new one, but I haven't found a way to do that. Any suggestions?

If you use personal domain at MobileMe then nothing will change.
Delete the CNAME record where you manage your domainname and point to your new host.
It takes a few hours for the change to propagate thru the network, so do not delete your MMe site yet.
    Your visitor won't notice.
If you use the web.me.com address then it is more complicated.
Duplicate the index.html file in your site folder as many times as there are webpages and rename each duplicate to the name of each webpage. You have to delete the original webpage.
Then open each renamed file in a plaintext/HTML editor of your choice and change the redirect URL to the same page on your new host.
    It looks like this :
    <html><head><title></title><meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; URL=http://url.to.new.page.html"></head><body></body></html>
Do so AFTER you publish to your new host.
    Practice.

  • Pointing iweb site to a new domain

Can anyone give me the answer.
I have published my site on my .mac account.
    I then brought a domain from web-mania.com
I now want to point my new domain name to the website on my .mac account.

I'm having the same sort of issue, but I think I figured it out. The only thing is . . .they say it could be 48 hours before it works. Anway, I purchased mine from "godaddy.com" and the instructions I followed were to add the "CNAME" also referred to as a DNS control panel, MX record or Alias (you'll find this option under your account manager probably). The CNAME for iWeb galleries is "web.mac.com" . I'm hoping this works for me, and I hope it helps you too! I have plans with a friend that is an expert tonight, so I'm going to pick his brain and figure it out, I'll report back if what I've told you is wrong!
