Publishing on the Net

I am writing a book about my family, using InDesign CS5. The book has many chapters (of the order of 100), and each chapter has many photographs (it is like a photo album with some text). The average size of the best quality .pdf from each chapter is about 50-80 Mb.
I want to make available the chapters to people that live in a couple of foreign countries, and that have fairly fast Internet connections. I would like them to be able to download and print whichever chapter they want (printing is the reason for using the best quality .pdf). Most people would perhaps only want to download 3-5 chapters, others may want more.
Because of the total size, it looks as if it would cost too much to put them on a web site (I have been quoted £30 per month to host a web page with about 150 Mb of space).
Is there a way to do this more cheaply? I am very ignorant about publishing on the net (and about many other things, of course...).

First, for desktop printing, you really don't need the very best quality in the images. 200 ppi is more than enough, and 150 is probably adequate for most printers. Save the images in RGB for color, or grayscale for blacka and white, and that will reduce file size even more.
Then look at something like DropBox or YouSendIt. A free account may be enough space, but even a paid account will be less than the money you've been quoted for a hosted website.

That's exactly what you would get. Create a folder with a suitable name: publish to it. Zip it; email it. Tell them to start with the 'index.html' file inside the folder. The rest will follow - they will see it exactly as they would see an online site, links and all.
Note that there is usually a 20MB limit on email attachments so if your site is image-heavy you might have a problem. An alternative is to post it to your webspace - you could post the zipped file and give them a link to it - that will download it (and it's a preferable way of handing a large file anyway, as they can download it at their convenience rather than being forced to in order to get their other mail).

As for starting the datasocket server when you run your VI, you can use the 'System Exec' VI to run the application. The exe to start the server is located in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\National Instruments\DataSocket\cwdss.exe

Looking for help from ANYBODY!!!! I've done one website for my business (Interior design), secured the domain name and published it no problems. Then I designed a second one (medical aid site), secured another domain name but when typed in, it goes to my FIRST website.
Does iWeb allow you you to publish 2 different websites to 2 different domain names???
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

With iWeb 09 you can publish to different webservers.
Select the Sitename in the lefthand column and either choose MobileMe, FTP or a folder.
If both sites are published on the same webserver, the site at the top of the list is the default one. If both domainnames point to that same webserver, then the default site loads regardless which domain name you use.
With MobileMe you can only have ONE domain name. With other hosts it depends on how you configured the webserver and the domainnames. Usually you can configure your (sub)domainname to point to a specific folder on your website. Check with your host.

iCloud does not provide website hosting. You will need to find another website hosting service - there are many to choose from - and upload your site there. How you do this depends on what version of iWeb you have.
In order to upload your existing site in iWeb '09 and above:
Click on the name of the site in the sidebar: the publishing settings pane will open. Set 'Publish to' to 'FTP'. Enter the name of the site and a contact address (if desired).
In the 'FTP Server Settings' section you will need to know the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. Your site will be published in a folder with its name at root level of the server, with an index.html file at root level (which will overwrite any index.html file which may be there already). The 'Directory/Path' field may need to include a path such as '/webspace/' or 'ht_docs/' - this is dependent on your hosting service and they should tell you this. If you want to publish within a folder you can add that to the path.
You can then click the 'Test connection' button so that iWeb can check that it can get access to your server space. You should enter the URL of the site in the 'URL' field so that rss feeds and internal links have the correct address.
To publish using an earlier version of iWeb:
From the File menu choose 'Publish to a folder'. You should create a folder somewhere convenient specifically for this and choose it when publishing to a folder: this folder should not contain anything else.
You now need an FTP program (FTP is the 'protocol' used for uploading) to upload the contents of the folder to your server.Cyberduck is free (donation requested): Transmit is $34 but I think better. You will need the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. You can drag the contents of your folder to your webspace, or create a folder there and drag the contents to that if you prefer.
Some facilities that iWeb provided when hosted on MobileMe will not work on other servers: comments on weblogs and photos, password-protecting your site (some hosts may provide this), searching in the weblog, and a hits counter (again, some hosts can provide code for this). Slideshows in iWeb will work on other hosts than MobileMe (they use different code when FTPing which doesn't depend on scripts hosted on MobileMe as the MobileMe version does); however there is an issue with the 'buttons' which control the slideshow which are images hosted on me.com - these depend on images which used to be hosted on MobileMe. IWeb page looking jumbled on the net and not my computer

I think this may be the first time I've published my web page to the net with 08 and its not translated some of the images. A couple new pictures i've added are only showing as a question mark and parts of the actual apple template art are also question marks on a page i created a while ago. Also, some fonts are large, etc. I've refreshed and republished several times with no change. something isn't translating or something. If someone could lend a bit of help, this would be much appreciated.

You don't need a server, you just need a web hosting package such as the ones from GoDaddy or many other hosts. You then send the web gallery directly from LR to your web space.
As you're asking such basic questions, it might be best if you read articles like this and see if a friend or colleague can get you started.

Previewing clips in Prelude while in other applications (e.g. browsing the net)?

Prelude is a great tool for quickly going through media, but sometimes clips require you to watch or listen to the whole thing to find the right moments. I'd love to be able to have clips playing in the background while surfing the net. Is there a way to do this? I'm using the Mac version of Prelude, and everytime I switch to another application while Prelude is playing a clip, the clip pauses.

About your update. If you have multiple displays you can specify one of them to have full-screen playback (don't select your display with the Mac menu bar, that can make it a challenge to get back to the preferences to undo the change). The "Disable video output while in the background" control makes it so this full screen output is turned off when you bring another application forward. In all cases Prelude CS6 stops playing when another app comes forward. Thank you, in advance, for filing a feature request.

Firefox won't display a web page. It starts, I see it in Task manager but it doesn't do anything. It used to work just fine. I had troubkle with my service provider, they got the net to work again but firefox doesn't do anything. Explorer works.

I uninstalled firefox and re-installed it from download. No difference. When I boot my computer, the internet doesn't start automatically anymore. I have to go into network manager and start it myself. Don't know why. My on-line windows help won't connect to the net either.

Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version
Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

This issue is because the Excel output from BI Publisher is MHTML (XML Publisher generates XHTML) not binary .xls.
MHTML and XHTML are more verbose formats than binary .xls.
It will be large because the current Excel output is just an HTML and not compressed like PDF. Please use the workaround (save it as .xls file). This is a known limitation of RTF layout templates.
BI Publisher Enterprise has a new feature True Excel Templates. The layouts generate binary Excel output.

Why does Firefox (3.6.12) try to access the Net as it starts, but before the Ffx window first shows & once more when the window opens, if I've set updates to manual and "about:blank" as my home page?

I click to load Firefox (3.6.12). The Comodo firewall warns me that Firefox is trying to connect to the Net. I block it, because I've not asked Firefox to do that, at that point. Then, when the Firefox window opens, the firewall warns me, again, that Firefox is trying to access the internet. I block it then, too. Use of Firefox is completely uncompromised by me doing this - that much is clear.
Surely, if I have turned off automatic updates and use "about:blank" as my browser startup page, Firefox has no need, and no place, attempting to connect to the internet until I ask it to, by clicking a bookmark in the Bookmarks toolbar, or until I type a URL into the address bar.
What is Firefox trying to do? and how can I stop it from trying to do it?
