Publishing to Hard Drive in Particular Folders

Hi there,
Sooo, I've been trying to find a answer to this without luck. So I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I have Publish to Hard Drive set up to get photos onto my iPad for my jewelry company. I need the photos to come up in different folders- rings, bracelets etc. So I have smart collections set up do do this. Took me forever to go through 1000's of photos and attribute keywords to all of them, but it is done! So they are in separate smart collections for rings, bracelets, etc. The first time I published these into my iMac's Pictures folder, all the separate collections went into separate folders with respective names but in one big folder titled Untitled Import.
However, when I tried to view these separate folders on my iPad because they were folders in a folder, they would only view in one big mess as opposed to separate easy-to-view folders. So I pulled them out of the main folder in the Pictures folder on my computer and, Voila! easy to view.
Here's where the trouble starts. Now, when I make changes to the photos in the Smart Collections in LR and publish it will only publish to that same original Folder-in-a-Folder situation, each an every time. So really, it doesn't sync, just adds new folders.
I have no idea what the work around is to this so I'm appealing to the masses. What can I do?
Thanks!

Disclaimer: I was not able to follow all of that.
That said, consider TreeSync Publisher (a free plugin I wrote) which supports exporting into folders which match collection set tree - collections in said tree can be smart..
So for example, you could set up a collection set:
* Jewelry Company (set):
     * Rings (smart coll)
     * Bracelets (smart coll)
etc.
Then point TreeSync Publisher to said collection set and export (or publish) - you'll get export tree:
Jewelry Company (folder)
     Rings (subfolder)
     Bracelets (subfolder)
i.e. exported folder tree will match "source" (mirrored) collection set tree.
Jeffrey Friedl also has a publish service plugin which may serve your needs: Collection Publisher.
Let me know outside the forum if you need help with any of my plugin(s).

  • Publish to hard drive mirroring folder structure

    Hello,
The publish to hard drive feature was one of my most anticipated additions in LR3. I use this to maintain a backup of all my images with the edits baked in, which offers a great level of security.
My only disappointment is that it flattens the folder structure. Backing up an entire catalogue to a single folder is less than convenient, so I ended up creating multiple publish folders in order to keep the file counts reasonable.
But the ideal would be the ability for the publish feature to mirror the folder structure, creating a backup that is organised just how I like it.
    Kind regards,
    Tom

You seem to be using the wrong tool for the job of backing up, why not use ChronoSync on Mac or Clone on PC to back up your folders [and structure] to a location of your choosing independently of LR? They can also back up any folders like your preferences or catalogue not just your images and do so according to a schedule that you designate.
Both are very easy to use and can back up single folders or entire hard drives or anything in between. I also find them very handy for location work as these programmes always keep my backup ext. HD in sync with my main ext HD without my having to think about it.

  • Lightroom publish to hard drive - virtual AND master losing all development changes upon export

LR 4.3, 59th reinstall (i lost count), standard HP pc setup, triple-core.
    workflow:
i develop the master to the point where i want to diverge, then create a virtual copy, finish developing and publish to hard drive. Have done this a million times, but since most recent reinstall (for a plethora of reasons, but mostly difficulties with performance and performance - and oh! performance... ;-), it publishes only the undeveloped original. I've tried publishing the master, just to see what happens, and ditto: only the unedited raw file is displaying in my published folder on the hard-drive.
i am careful to select 'Show PUBLISHED folder on hard-drive' from the right-click drop-down on the published image in the hard-drive publishing module, which in lightroom DOES reflect all changes, but the image on the hard-drive is the original raw file, renamed to the publish-service's specs.
any ideas? i'm fresh out... MUCH appreciated. Having to do an extra export into ps6 (which does reflect changes), and re-save for no other reason than to preserve development is time-consuming and destructive to my workflow, which is darned complicated enough as it is!
    thank you!

Could you explain why you have selected "original" as the format, rather than some form of processed file such as TIFF or JPG? In other words, for what purpose are you making duplicates of your Raw files when Publishing? If that is not what you wanted to do, then you are Publishing the wrong type of file.
Exporting "as original" when the LR image concerned is a virtual copy, would be expected to have the same outcome as when the LR image is a master copy, since both versions have the same kind of original - literally share the same physical original - and that would be accordingly Published out as a new copy, when "original" is your file type. Then LR metadata would be written as a sidecar (.xmp) file next to that (or embedded in that, for say a DNG or JPG).
Also, what means are you using to view the exported Raw files in the Published folder? Unless this is Adobe .xmp compatible software - which means: Bridge/ACR, or else importing into a LR Catalog -  it will fail to interpret the LR edits since these will mean nothing to that program. If, for example, this is Raw support built into the operating system's file browser, then what you are seeing is the original camera-embedded JPG preview - which your work within LR has simply left alone.

  • New Computer and New External Hard Drive - why do folders and photos not show up?

I replaced my desktop with a new laptop and external hard drive. I transferred photos from the desktop to the external hard drive. Lightroom 2 only shows the mapped hard drive, but does not show any folders or photos. Can Lightroom be set up to house all the photos on an external hard drive rather than using space on the internal laptop hard drive? Do the photos and folders need to be imported again into LR2? The photos are available for viewing when you search folders, but they open up in Photoshop not LR2.
What should I do to configure imports to be housed on the external hard drive? Is this wise? I will not be able to hold all the photos on the laptop internal hard drive. Photos used to be JPEG and DNG from D700. I am starting to see NEF. Does this replace DNG? Besides RAW I also need to have JPEG for other family members to access photos on other computers connected to the network. I am watching a tutorial DVD and slowly picking up how this all works. Let me know if I am not using the correct terms.
Hardware: HP laptop w/64bit, Buffalo 1TB RAID hard drive.

Lot's of questions here. I'll do a few.
Yes Lightroom can work with images on external drives. As many drives as you want.
I assume from what you said in your original post that you have had lightroom installed on the old desktop and now wish to transfer your catalogue and all files to the external drive and work from that.
So what you would do would be to transfer the entire contents of the lightroom folder on your old computer, except for any images, to the same location on your new laptop. This would include the catalogue files and any folders containing previews. Then you would copy all your image files to the new external hard drive. When you open lightroom you can then select the catalogue you copied from the old computer and open it. In the the folder pane in the library module you can then right click on one of the folders and select "locate missing files". Then you just need to point light room to the new location of your images. You may or may not need to regenerate all your previews.
I store all my images on external hard drives and I even run the catalogue and previews from the same external drives. I have backups of all my images of course. I have light room make backups of the catalogue to the C drive on my laptop so that the original and the backup are stored in different locations.
NEF is the proprietary file system for raw images used on Nikon cameras. DNG is a universal raw file format developed by Adobe. You can convert your files from NEF to DNG on import, but as Lightroom can read both types of files it is not necessary. At this point in time if you are using lightroom you should get similar results from either type of file.
To store imports on the new external drive you can you tell light room to copy the files to the new drive or you can manually copy the files to the new location and have light room import From the current location.
    Hope this helps

  • Tuxera & external hard drives: already existing folders seem empty?t

So I bought a Macbook Pro just recently. Previously I've had windows and I have two external hard drives, both are NTFS so I installed Tuxera so I could create new folders and save stuff on them.
Now the problem: I can create new folders and stuff but somehow when I open already excisting folders, they seem to be empty (nothing's coming up on them). However, when I checked the available space on disk, it was the same as before (and I'm talking about every folder on that hard drive so lots of Gt's of stuff, not just one movie or something) so apparently it hasn't vanished either? It just doesn't show up when I open the folders. And I know there is stuff there because I used it yesterday and it showed me the movie file that was in the folder. Now it seems empty.
    Help?

    A: are these WD drives
B: Did you install WD hard drive control software on your Mac at any point?

  • MacBook Pro - Hard Drive replaced now external won't allow me to view any of my back ups from my previous hard drive that crashed folders have red circle with minus sign in them and says I don't have permission, how do I get around this?

My MacBook Pro's hard drive failed a little while back and the hard drive was replaced, however all my items on my external were linked to that hard drive apparently, now I can't get into my back up files for my business as I'm getting an error telling me I don't have permission to view the files, I can't figure out how to over ride this setting to get to my stuff for my business which is really NOT GOOD for my clients or the contracts I'm under, does anyone know how to get past this and get the external to work like it is supposed to?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • Two External Hard Drives and Itunes folders

How do I make my imac access two external hard drives that contain ALL my itunes music?

But here is the real question, can this be done without have an Operating system on that external hard drive?

  • Lightroom publishing to hard drive

I have a slight problem, not with publishing, but deleting already published files.
Have 3 published hard disk, which reside on 3 different PC's. Publishing is no problem. However, if I decided to delete photos from my catalogue and use the option "remove from service", I have to make sure that all 3 PC's are available, else I get an error message.
I can delete from the published folders, but I would have to find the same picture on each, to be able to delete. The photos are then deleted the next time I publish.
Is there a way where I can remove the photos from service, without have the other PC's available?

Here is one idea, assuming you have the original image files somewhere else too.., you can build smart previews (in Lightroom 5+) then delete the laptop copy (using your OS I mean, not Lightroom) without interfering with published status.
Of course, have backups first, and take caution, and try just one at first, and...
To be clear: this is not an "ordained" way to do things, so not recommended unless you are savvy computer/file-wise..

  • IPhoto 11 - How can I import photos from my hard drive keeping the folders the way they are?

I recently went from PC to Mac.  I transferred thousands of photos, many of which I had in albums.  When I imported them into iPhotos, it didn't seem to preserve my albums, unless I'm not seeing something.  Is there a way to do that?

To begin with we only have words to communicate with on this forum so it is critical that we use the same ones
in iPhoto you have a library which can be views as events, photos, places or faces  --  events and photos view show all photo in your library and faces and places show only thos that have faces or places assigned
albums are logical entities that are pointers to the photos in the library and are used for organization
folders are logical entities that hold albums or other folders and also are used for organization
The photos (by default and recommended) are copies into th eiPhoto library with is a SQL database. you ony access the photos using the iPhoto program or the media browser which is in the lower left hand corner of each open/attach/upload window
If you drag a folder of photos onto the open iPhoto window it will import them and create an event names the same as the folder  if you drag the foldr of photos to the source pane on the left it will import them into an event and create an album
The biggest problem most windows users have is thinking of managing their photo with a database rather than the old way of managing files with  a file manager
iPhoto is much more powerful since you can serach the database on any criteria
    Hope this helps
It also would be helpful to watch the iPhoto tutorials under getting started - http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/

  • WSE2012R2 Dashboard Stoage Tab Does Not Show ANY Hard Drives or Folders

I have been using WSE2012 for nearly two years as a "home" server. I recently decided to upgrade to R2. After spending several days trying to "migrate" to R2 without any success, I finally did a fresh install to my original system drive
(a 240Gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD). The install went well until I checked all of my data drives (4x2Tb, 2x1Tb, 1x3Tb and a 2Tb "storage spaces" drive). I found that only three of the drives were online and useable. The "storage spaces" drives
were not even visible in Disk Manager and all of the other drives were "offline". After doing a lot of searching with Google, I finally figured out how to make the "offline" drives "Online" with PowerShell. With much more searching,
I also finally figured out how to "bring back" the "storage spaces" drives with about four lines of PowerShell code so I thought I was finally home free... But no such luck. I then had a lot of trouble restoring my "ServerFolders"
although everything else seemed to be working. I also had rebooted several times while working on these things without any issues. After finishing up yesterday, I planning to finish working on the "ServerFolders" earlier today.
I ran into a problem right away, however, when I opened the Dashboard and went to the Storage tab only to find that NONE of the Hard Drives and "Server Folders" showed up. I had an alert that the "Server Storage Service" was
NOT running. I checked and found it to be "stopped" and in "manual" mode. After starting the service, the Storage Tab showed that it was being refreshed. After a lengthy wait, it never did refresh and the "Server Folders" item
on the Home Tab showed "N/A". I tried rebooting again. When the server came up, I checked the service again and found it to be running (although it was still on "manual")... But once again, Storage Tab never did refresh properly and still
showed nothing. This time I changed the service to "Auto" and also tried "Restarting" the service, to no avail. I rebooted again. This time, when it came back up, I first checked the service again and it was running and still on "Auto".
Before opening the Dashboard, I checked the "Files and Storage" section in "Server Manager" and everything looked good. All of my hard drives and my "storage spaces" drive appeared with no apparent issues so I thought that everything
was finally OK... Wrong!!!!! I opened the Dashboard and went back to the Storage Tab only to find that it still would NOT refresh so that NONE of my hard drives or folders were showing. I am totally lost at the moment. How can everything actually be there
and okay but NOT appear in the Dashboard which, by the way, was working fine yesterday -- and I did not make any changes whatsoever between yesterday and starting to work on the system today. I am totally lost. Can anyone please help me resolve this
    issue?????

PROBLEM SOLVED. As I was just getting ready to "bite-the-bullet" and reinstall 2012 R2, I discovered something that led me to the solution. When I was previously trying to restart the Windows Storage Service, I "thought" it was restarting
okay. I was restarting it by right-clicking on the service. When I "started" it this way without opening up the service properties, it would immediately change from "stopped" to "running". What I did not realize was that the service
was quickly stopping "without" refreshing the screen so that "running" was still displayed even though the service had stopped. Once I realized that the service was not actually restarting, I tried another Google search based on this fact
which led me to some forum threads that helped me solve the problem since I found others with essentially the same problem. I found two corrupted registry keys under Windows Server\Storage Services. One of the keys was a major entry, the other was in the "Folders"
subfolder. After deleting BOTH keys, the service restarted without any issues and my drives and folders reappeared in the dashboard. A reboot was "not" required. What a pain! But everything is good now.

  • External hard drive folders disappear

My external 2 Terabyte Seagate hard drive keeps loosing folders. This has happened twice now. Everything is fine on Friday, I shut down for the weekend, then I return on Monday and some of the folders are missing. Today it happened later in the day, apparently after a Time Machine Backup, rather than first thing in the AM after booting. I am backing up to a different 3T Seagate external hard drive, both are Firewire 800. When I run Disk Utility it tells me everything is fine. Naturally, it fails to mention there are ten years of archives missing!
The first time this happened I got lucky and noticed some folders were missing. I searched the Web but did not find anything useful or relevant. My firmware on the hard drives is up to date. So, I totally erased the external, repartitioned using GUID, and did a restore from Time Machine. Everything seemed to work for week or so. Then today once again, one partition out of three is missing folders, the same partition as last time. It was fine at 4:43, based on Time Machine time line, but at 5:30 I am missing the bulk of the info on that partition.
I am running 10.9.5 on a Mac Mini. Does anyone know what is going on?
    Thank you.

  • Photos. They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. Copied them (hours and hours) to external hard drive. They are now in alphabetical order (19,000  of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order-and have been taken with different cameras- help!!!!!!

    Photos.
They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. There are 19,000+ of them, some rescued from a pc crash- which I used the nifty iPhoto to put back into date order.
I want to take them all off my laptop, now............as I need to use it for WORK!!
Copied them (hours and hours) to another external hard drive.
They are now in alphabetical order (all 19,000+ of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order. (-They have also been taken with different cameras over the years and some of the generic camera numbering remains.)
I have tried to copy them (only a few as an experiment)  one event at a time, but that again "opens up" the Event "folder" and tips them out as individuals and therefore just lists image letters and numbers alphabetically.
    How can I copy
the whole library still in  "Events" to an external hard drive?
the folders/albums I have already made on to this hard drive?
and how can I add to this back up monthly, again keeping events and folders separate and updated?
Mac is so user friendly - there must be a way.........
    Thanks

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.
    Thanks, Sean.

  • I am going to buy a new external hard drive and have some questions first

Although I asked this question several years ago, I would like to ask it again, just if in case technology in general or external hard drives in particular have changed in any significant ways.
I need to replace a 1 terabyte LaCie external hard drive that died on me after a few years.
    1. I am afraid of buying another LaCie. What other brands are reliable? I heard that Western Digital is. Also another brand beginnibg with S (so helpful, I know).
    2. Do I have to look for a drive that is MAC FORMATTED? I vaguely recall this term from years ago. I also remember another term that I was to look out for, but I don't remember what it was. Something like ”chronicled“ but obviously not that.
    3. Should I get more than 1 terabyte? Right now I have an old, old 125 gigabyte LaCie that still lives, but it is so small that it is almost nothing
    4. What do you think about buying external hard drives fron Costco as opposed to from the Apple Store?
    ~L

Ziatron, you wrote ”All you do is open the enclosure and the hard drive plugs in. (done.)“ What enclosure?
This is the enclosure I like, it needs a hard drive to work : http://www.cooldrives.com/ox93saiihadr.html
    But there are many others.
looking at my two dead laCie ext. hard drives and they don't have ”enclosures.“ Just holes in the back to receive the cables.
A hard drive enclosure is a box or case the actual hard drive goes into. Look at the images in the link above. You can see what is inside.
This hard drive goes inside the above cool drive enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD20EADS/dp/B001RB1TI S/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258862242&sr=8-1
You recommended getting a hard drive with a Firewire connection, but most of the hard drives have USB.
Well maybe, the better drives are Firewire.
    Should that matter to me?
Yes, Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Is USB a whole lot slower than Firewire if I am transferring materials?
Firewire is faster and _more reliable._
Take a look at the link below, "Build Your Own External Hard Drive". The enclosure I like is easier to use.
    http://www.harmony-central.com/articles/tips/hard_drive/
    http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/externalhdcase.htm
Also you need a Mac Pro to use eSATA, with a iMac use the Firewire port.

  • How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and  I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".
thanks so much. My hard drive has VERY little space left on it so I need to transfer ASAP.

I just posted this to another topic, but it applies here as well. Hopefully there's no prohibition on cross-posting on this board, my apologies to all if there is:
"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
    1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
    2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
    3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

How do I move iTunes and my entire iTunes database to an external hard drive? What folders and files do I need to move? Do I need to create a "music" folder on the external drive? I have an enormous music collection -- some 700 CDs -- and I would like to have them all in my iTunes database, but there is not enough room for them all on my MacMini hard drive.
Similarly, I would like to move my iPhoto database to the external drive. What folders do I need to move?

Thanks - I had a look and they are both there on my external HD, the same name, size and date as on my computer, so that's ok, I must be backing them up as you say.
But, they don't have the same icons - the XML file is described as a "REALbasic XML project" instead of "Text document", while the iTunes Library file doesn't have the iTunes logo, and is described simply as "Document" and not "iTunes Database File". Does that matter? Will it matter if I ever need to restore from them?
