  • Is it just me, or is iTunes Match a "scam"?

All right, so here are a few disturbing observations I've made while using the new (for the rest of us) service of iTunes Match...
    1st observation:
I have some songs in my library marked by iTunes Match as "Matched" which had wrong tags on purpose... for example, take... Carlos Gardel's "Por una cabeza".
Since I didn't have this song's album name, I tagged it under the album field: "Search for album..." in order to remind me of searching the corresponding album for that particular song. Well... iTunes Match happened to match this song anyway! So I deleted it in order to download the "higher quality" version which is supposedly, already in the iTunes Store servers (I don't know why since I don't even know which album(s) have this version of the song).
    2nd observation:
So I have a song named "Lambada" with no artist tag, same "Search for album..." album tag and nothing else. Well... iTunes Match managed to find my song and allowed me to download a higher quality version of it!
    3rd observation:
I have a faulty song from Telepopmusik's Genetic World album, more than 8 minutes long (because of like... 3 minutes of silence this file has), when this song is supposed to have a play time of 5:05 or something. And yes... iTunes Match, found my 8 minutes version and when I deleted my file, I downloaded the higher quality version of... 8 minutes (with the added 3 mins silence song)! (which iTunes Store doesn't even have in its catalogue...)
So after thinking about this for a minute... I've reached the following conclusion...
    1. iTunes Match doesn't use tags as a method for matching songs. (otherwise, my Lambada song would be impossible to match)
    2. iTunes Match seems to just locally convert your songs to an AAC version (and not downloading the iTunes Store catalogue song, even though it says so), otherwise, my Telepopmusik's song would be transformed into the iTunes catalogue 5 min version of the same song...
    3. If those theories are correct, then yes... we are paying for the songs we already had in the first place, with no song upgrading whatsoever (not one you could've easily achieved by just right clicking a song and choosing - CREATE AAC VERSION).
Please correct me if there is anything fallacious in my reasoning... I'm just a little disturbed about this...
    Best.

People, please read before commenting! It is tiresome having to repeat things...
    Mike Connelly wrote:
How are you checking to see if a song is matched or uploaded?  You can right click the top headers in iTunes and get two new ones, one with cloud icons and the other with text saying Matched/Uploaded/etc.
If you're deleting and a download gets you the same file then it was probably uploaded instead of matched.
As I told roebeet on my first reply: "About your second point, yes, I do have the iCloud Status column enabled that's how I began noticing this weird things, and no... the Telepopmusik song was matched since the beginning, that's why it makes me doubt about all of this."
    @KeithJenner,
Obviously Apple won't explicitly say it... that would be openly accepting that you clean music, but I sure can tell that everyone understood the implications of the service... Anyway about your point:
"As for the issues stated here about getting the old song back, it has been raised a number of times on this and other forums and every time it is discovered that it was indeed an uploaded file rather than a matched one. I'd be surprised to find that isn't the case here, but I suppose you never know."
As you can see from my quote above, my song was matched the first time I ran iTM, I THEN deleted my file, and downloaded the 256 kbps and yep, it was my own file... I mean, I don't care anymore, I've already paid for a year, so I'll hope it gets better with time, but what I can say now is that, Apple's advertisings are misleading, I took the bite and unless the service gives me a REAL benefit, I won't be renewing my subscription.
What I'm trying right now, is to make people be aware of the real "features" of the service.
Anyway, thank you everyone for your comments.
    Best.

  • Use one account for apps and other for itunes match

    Hello everybody
My question today is quite simple. I use one account for apps and tv shows, but inwant to use a different itunes account for purchasing itunes match. How can I use them both on my devices? Will it be asking for my user-pass each time i play a song? What other thing should i consider?
    Thank you in advance

I would strongly recommend you not do this.  You will regret it.
I have played with this issue a lot.  You have to remain signed into match in order for it to show up on your phone. If you sign out to purchase an app or redownload one from your appstore id you use then match will be removed from your phone and when you go into your music app the icloud will not be there.  You then have to go sign back out of the store id you used for your app purchase and then sign back into match and everything will have to go though the download to your device process again.  This really is not what you want to do.
Sign up to match with the apple id that you know you will use the most or has the most purchased items and use that for all purchases, i.e. books, apps, movies, and music.  You don't want to go though the other process.
Plus apple will start not letting you sign into match because you signed out and back in, in to short a period of time.
all store purchases on an iphone are linked to the store id.  if you sign out of your match id on the appstore and sign into another account to purchase an app then itunes match will sign out in the music app.  You can't have two store id's signed into your iphone at the same time.  They are all linked together.

  • How can 2 family members who share an iTunes library both use iTunes match?

My wife and I both share an iTunes library on the same Macbook and both sync our phones to that computer. We each have our own Apple ID and we use a 3rd account for iCloud for Photostream. In ios5 we were able to both access the music library on our iPhones via iTunes match while signed in under our unique IDs. Now, it will only let one ID access the music on the phones.  How can I get it to work like it used to, where we can both access the music while both continuing to be logged in under our own IDs on our own phones?

I am taking this slowly so I have not added my iTunes music to the new laptop yet until I figure out how to make it work. But I have just downloaded a digital copy of The Dark Knight and when I log on to my girlfriends user and open iTunes, the video is not there. When I log back into my user and connect her iPhone to iTunes, I am not allowed to drop in the movie. That is where I am at. I need to be able to add my stuff to her iPhone and her stuff to my iPhone without syncing and losing all info.

  • Itunes match has removed my playlists from itunes and my iphone. Not only that, many of the songs 'matched' on itunes do not show up on my iphone. Seriously annoyed, wish I'd never paid for it

Please read the title; itunes match has removed my playlists on itunes and iphone and the songs that are supposedly 'matched' on itunes are not showing up on my iphone.
    Any Really annoyed about this

iTunes Match does not have the ability to remove local files.
The service operates by comparing the selected iTunes Library with the iTunes Store content and 'matching' or 'uploading' - it is very straightforward a 'match' provides equivalent access to iTunes Store content as a recognised 'purchase'; upload simply copies a 256k AAC variant into the cloud.  There are no elements of this activity that can erase the local library content.
Would suggest you explore possible alternative causes of file loss.  Given the pattern described of selective deletion, leaving many Songs intact - would suggest making at least 2 secure offline Song file backups and starting the library again from a fresh install of iTunes once a thorough sweep of the system has been completed for virus.  It is also worth assessing the physical security of the system - who has access & with what privileges.
To access Songs from the cloud, you would have to manually delete the Song from the library or open an empty library - so even when accessing content, iTunes Match provides no local deletion capability.

  • Itunes match  how do you to select multiple songs or do you click each one

In ITunes match  how do you to select multiple songs to download to pc or do you have to click each one.

First make sure you have the current version of iTunes, which is actually 10.5.1.  I had to manually download it from apples website, for some reason, it wouldnt auto-update.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Once that is complete, go to the iTunes store. In the Quick Links secion to the right, you should see iTunes Match. This will prompt you to activate your subscription to iTunes match.  After that it should ask you to add your computer and once youve done that, it should begin the process of scanning your library and adding it to the cloud
Alternatively, once you activate your subscription, you can also go to the Store dropdown menu in iTunes and select Turn On iTunes Match.

  • How do you move an iphone from one mac to a new mac when both are using Itunes Match

I have an Imac (Mountain Lion) with two users sharing an Itunes account (Ver 11).  We each have iphones syncing to the computer (and to icloud separatly). I have just activated Itunes match on the IMac and on both phones.  I just bought a new MacBookPro and have activated Itunes match on it so I am sharing Itunes. Now, I want to move one of the iphones to the new MacBook and have it backing up to that computer instead of the Imac.  How should I proceed with synching the phone with the new computer?  How about the photos on the iphone?  Will they just load into the iphoto library on my new MacBook Pro.
Also, can I still synch the phones manually and move over playlist from Itunes to the phone?  I am assuming that when you turn off itunes match on the phone those playlists will be active.  I want to make sure that say, when I am on a plane or have no wifi or cell, that I can still use the phone as an Ipod.  With Itunes match you are streaming and always need a signal.  There has to be a way to retain the simple music player functionality, right?

There's too much above for me to specifically answer your questions, but I'll assume from the title that you're basically trying to sync to a new computer.  So here are some articles to help you.

  • How can an iTunes Match user prevent songs from being uploaded to the iCloud?

Has anyone who is currently using iTunes Match found a way to prevent selected songs in their music library from being uploaded to the iCloud. I have a number of audio files that are hour long mixes, but aren't quite large enough to run afoul of the 200MB size limit. I'd like to keep using iTunes Match, but would like to prevent it from trying to upload any of these larger files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Another oddity I just discovered is that if I turn on wifi hotspot on my phone and connect my iMac to my phone's 3G service then iTunes on my iMac will stream music just fine from iTunes match (yes, the music was only in the cloud, not on my drive).
I've tried everything I can think of to get iTunes Match to play tracks over cellular.. including totally deauthorizing all my computers and devices, totally removing all tracks my itunes match in the cloud and re-scanning/uploading everything. Purchased new tracks, and they won't play unless they are downloaded. But they will play just fine when previeing them for purchase in iTunes app.

  • How can download all the songs from itunes match to an ipad 2?

I activate itunes match in my Imac, the process of scan and identify the library songs is finished successfully, after that i activate the itunes match in my ipad,  I need download all the songs in the ipad, I select Music Icon and don't appear the (download all) button in the section of songs,  i have to push the cloud button in each song to download?
I enter in the section of albums and playlist and in this section the button download all appears. How can i download all the songs to the device?

I just found the answer by myself.  Instead of clicking Cloud icon one by one, highlight all the songs in Cloud (after sorting by Cloud status) and riight click, download.  Now I am getting all the songs back to my local machine.  I will sync my iOS devices tomorrow and just GET RID OF iTUNES MATCH.  To me, it was a disaster.  Worse than their map app.

  • Can I use iTunes Match for 2 iPhones with different music, same account?

My wife and I each have an iPhone and share an iTunes account.  We share a master music library but each manually manage our music on our iPhones.  So she has certain songs on her phone and I have different ones on mine, both coming from the same master library.  I'm trying to figure out if I can use iTunes Match in this scenario.  I don't want to see her songs on my iPhone.  Is there a way to only see music on my iPhone if I use Match or am I stuck seeing my entire library on my iPhone?

I think I'm getting it finally, thanks for the clarification.  So at least I know there is a way to not see all music in my library from my iPhone.
So in my case i have about 800 songs on my iPhone out of about 1600 on my iTunes library.  If I'm understanding correctly I would have to enable Match on my iPhone, then turn off the "show all music" option.  This in turn should leave me with my original 800 songs listed which I woud then have to download from the cloud.  Once I have all of my 800 songs back down from the cloud I won't be required to download them again from that phone.
A worse scenario would be that I enable Match, and then have to find my 800 songs out of the total 1600 manually from the list and then download them from the cloud.
    Which scenario is correct?
