Pulled external hard drive out before unmounting it from desktop

Hey friends.
I have had my external for about a year now and i have done it many times without any problems. But today i pulled it out before i unmounted it and now it wont appear on the desktop.
I am running a Powerbook G4. Disk utility see it and says
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I have tried data rescue II but it does not see the drive. I have tried fsck but it only wants to repair the boot-up drive.
Anything would help right now thanks in advance.

Purchase DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro and use that application to repair the drive. The error message you got indicates that there is a problem with the drive which Disk Utility isn't able to fix. Disconnecting a drive without unmounting it may cause damage to the disk's directory structure, and shouldn't be done unless you have no choice except to do it.

  • My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro.

My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro. It no longer even shows up in finder, however it does show up in Disk Utility. I have tired so many of the suggestions on the internet all to a fail.
I keep getting the message to be sure that all applications are closed before ejecting the drive. I have no clue how to tell which appliactions are using the external drive to shut them off. I turned off Time Machiene to be safe.
I don't need anything on the external drive, I am just trying to erase it, save my current info, and migrate it to my new MacBook Pro.
I have been about four days now with this issue all over the internet, in this community, and watching videos on everything and nothing about this topic to a fail.
I think I am doomed and have lossed this external drive because of some wierd application that will NEVER close on my hard drive for it to disconnect correctly. It's annoying.
    Does anyone have a solution?

Have you trie using another USB port? Can you test the USB ports with other USB devices to assure they are working? You may want to reinstall OS X in case there has been a driver glitch.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

When you erased the disk did you select Mac OS Extended Journaled as the format option?

  • External hard drive won't unmount for disk utility.

Im not sure if this is the right topic area but I have a white macbook and my external hard drive won't unmount. I want to erase it via disk utility but it keeps telling me other programs are using it.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

Got a new external hard drive. Transferred all files from old hard drive to new hard drive. Connected hard drive to macbook. How do I get all my files to be recognized by iTunes and my already made playlists??

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

I was trying to move my photos from the iPhoto library to an external hard drive.  I now have a desktop display of thousands of cascading photos.  How do I remove them from my desktop screen?

Strangely enough we can not see you so it really helps if you share with use exactly what you have, exactly what you did and details about the problem
what version of iPhoto and of the OS? What exact steps did you do? where are you seeing these "thousands of cascading photos" now and using what software and what exactly did you want to accomplish
The correct way to move your iphoto library to an external drive is to verify the drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journal) and then drag the iphotl library intact as a single entity to is
The correct way to move some or all of your photos is to select them in iphoto and export 9file menu ==> export  --  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921 ) to the external drive

  • What is the best priced External Hard Drive, that I can reboot from, for the MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro with 10.9.4. I am looking for a 3T External Hard Drive that I can boot from if my system goes south, that I can afford. Any recommendations?

Don't know the best priced, but the external drives I like best are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro quad-interface drives.  I have four of the 2 TB drives for my MacBook Pro and iMac and they are terrific.  OWC is a Mac specialist supplier with the best guarantees and service you will find.

Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • If I install parallels can I pull my hard drive out of a PC and use it through an enclosure with USB connection?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Moreover, you may be able to start your Mac directly from your PC hard drive and run Windows as you did with your PC. To do it, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting and choose the PC hard drive.
If you want to do it in Parallels, you have to set it up in order to use the PC hard drive as the virtual hard disk

  • External hard drives get improperly unmounted

I recently upgraded to Mavericks (clean install) on my mid 2011 MacMini.  I have an external hard drive connected via USB3 to eSATA cable.  I leave the computer on around the clock as iTunes serves my AppleTV with it's music and videos.
I've repeatedly come back to my computer to find a message stating that my hard drive had been "improperly unmounted" and when I plug the drive back in it won't mount.  Disk Utility reports that there are invalid b-tree nodes and the disc can't be repaired.  I manage to get the disc fixed using DiskWarrior 4.4 (version 4.1.1 couldn't fix it).
I've read that it's an issue with the energy saver program, so I've turned that all off so the computer does not go to sleep and the drives do not get put to sleep whenever possible.  And the hard drive is still getting booted off.
What is going on?  I've taken to removing my drives when the computer is not in use, but that's usually when I run my time machine backups, so now those aren't getting done.
    What's the solution?

    Hello Ari,
USB3 is prone to interference from Wifi & Blutooth for one thing.
Another... are the external drive(s) ıus powered or do they have their own AC power?
Can happen on earler one's also, but...
See if it's related to this...

  • Lightroom lost my photos after swapping external hard drives out.

I moved everything I had on an external hard drive to a new external hard drive.  I then went into Lightroom, and used the "Find Missing Folder..." option, and restored my photos.  After doing this, I lost all of my edits.  The photos are completely unedited.
How do I tell Lightroom how to reassign the edits to these photos?  Lightroom does still have the "edit" information, but I dont know how to connect the two.
    I appreciate any help!
    Aaron

The obvious implication being a format of the boot disk happened.
You could try using Disk Utility via the recovery partition (press and hold ⌘R after the boot chime), and — failing that — you'll probably be rolling in your backups.
If you have critical data that wasn't backed up, then you're probably headed for private drive data recovery — if so, that won't be cheap, and you will want to keep the disk offline to preserve whatever might be left on the disk.
If there's nothing on the disk, roll in OS X from the recovery partition or from Internet recovery, and start over.

  • External hard drive no longer shows up on Desktop

    Hi everyone,
I did what a good person should do with a tech issue and did a long search through forums before I resigned to bothering you all with it.
I've had a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media external hard drive for 6 months which up until this week, was showing up as an icon on my Desktop. I had named it Eid HD.
I suddenly am unable to access this drive on my MacBook Pro. The Desktop icon has disappeared but the drive still lights up as per normal. I'm using OS X v10.6.8
    I tried changing USB cables.
The drive appears in Disk Utility as follows (the yellow icons):
I read somewhere that I needed to mount it. The first yellow icon doesn't have the mount option. The second one (Eid HD) has the option but when I mount it, I get the following message:
    Mount Failed.
The disk “Eid HD” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
Tried to mount - same error message as above. Mount failed.
I downloaded Disk Warrior and although the drive appears in there, I can't do anything with it. The Graph and Rebuild buttons are both greyed out.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?
The files are still on the drive as I used it on a Windows machine to test it.
I don't want to format it.
Please help if you can, thank you in advance.
    Sam

I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
That quote is from your first post.  But I have some questions about that (maybe just to satisfy my own curiosity).
    1.  When you ran Disk Utility First Aid did you do it on the disk itself (the one that is enabled with the Seagate title)?
    2. That First Aid window title line says "First Aid: EID HD" yet my DU window title only shows the name exactly as it appears in the left panel, no "First Aid:" prefix.  So is that a change in 10.6.8 (I use 10.6.5)?
    3. You display shows lines like "Verifying folders", "Folders verification completed", and "Verifying $...".  Again I have never seen DU display that kind of info.  Another 10.6.8 change?
As I said, I am only curious.  It may not mean anything.  But I thought I would point out these details just in case.
If these aren't 10.6.8 changes (I find it hard to believe apple would change DU after all these years just from 10.6.5 to 10.6.8) then just what DU First Aid were you running?

  • External hard drive icon won't appear on desktop

Apparently spontaneously (has worked fine in the past!) I cannot get a desktop icon for my La Cie external hard drive to appear. I can see the hard drive in Desktop Utility and can eject it through there but the verify and repair options aren't highlighted.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.
    Ummmm....
