Pulling audio of of a dvd

Whats the best way to pull the audio of a Commercially Available DVD? I only need clips from a few chapters.

MPEG Streamclip (free) and the $20 QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component (Apple Store) could be use to "demux" the MPEG-2 file or "extract" and convert (export) just the audio track to AIFF format for further conversion or use in apps like Garageband or iMovie.

    I think that you have multiple sound devices and their boot order changes after each reboot.

  • Recording just audio from a video DVD

    I thought I was ordering a CD with the music of a Broadway show. It turns out to have been a DVD of the entire production.
    How do I get just the audio from the DVD into iTunes? And while I'm at it, once I get the audio, I'll need to strip the dialogue, and I haven't got any idea how to do that, either!
    Hope someone can help!
    Jimper

    Jimper
    You can use Audio Hijack to record the audio from the Apple DVD player, which can be sent directly to iTunes as an ACC or AIFF file.
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
    Stripping the "dialog" (assuming dialog is spoken commentary during the performance??) will be much more difficult. There are techniques to use a an audio editing program such as Audacity
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
    to invert a one side of a stereo track to remove vocals for Karaoke, but the sound quality will be greatly diminished, the bass and even the vocals may be removed.
    So if there is "dialog" on all of the songs it may be cheaper to buy the CD.
    Hope this helps.

  • 805 MB on a 700 MB CD?!  Can I copy a weirdly large Audio CD onto a DVD?

    Went to make a few copies of a borrowed audio CD. Made the playlist and asked iTunes to "Burn playlist to disc," and read that my playlist is too large to fit on a CD. That's odd. I copied it from a CD. So is there a way to copy a now-805 MB audio file onto a DVD, without special software? Is iTunes adding size to the playlist? Thanks. PG in CT.

    NO. If you let DVDSP make your encoding you'll get uncompressed audio (AIFF/PCM) what means most probably high bitrate issues during building/playback and a lot of the space of your disc.

  • Need help getting audio off of a dvd...

    [You can skip this paragraph if you don't need the backstory.]
    So, for several weeks I've been trying to get some audio off of a DVD of mine and into a simple mp3 file. A couple days ago I found and followed this guide, and thought I had succeeded. But after a while I realized that the file I got does not play nice with my handheld mp3 player, or mpd, or mplayer, or anything whatsoever that is not gstreamer-based. MPD goes especially berserk - after playing the file, it can no longer play anything else until I reboot (yes reboot - restarting mpd doesn't fix anything). I should also mention that I'm aware that the guide is not 100% correct; I followed the advice and corrections of some commentors there too.
    Anyways, I guess I need to ask for help with this. How would you go about getting audio off of a DVD?

    I usually use the following command to rip a music dvd to wav:
    OUTPUTDIR="/Some/Rip/Dir"
    TITLE=2
    FIRST_CHAPTER=1
    LAST_CHAPTER=13
    CHAPTER=$FIRST_CHAPTER
    AUDIO_ID=128
    echo "Ripping Audio..."
    while [ $CHAPTER -le $LAST_CHAPTER ]; do
    let NO=$CHAPTER
    mplayer -dvd-device /dev/dvd1 dvd://$TITLE -vo null -vc null -ao pcm:waveheader:file=$OUTPUTDIR/track$NO.wav -af lavcresample=44100 -aid $AUDIO_ID -chapter $CHAPTER-$CHAPTER
    let CHAPTER=CHAPTER+1
    done
    Resampling to 44100 is important since most mp3 players cannot handle 48000.
    Then I have another little script that converts it to flac, sets the correct tags, and finally converts the flac to oggs as well..

  • Audio missing on burned DVD

    Follow me on this one: Made an iMovie and shared it with iDVD. Did all the menu items, etc. and burned the DVD. After watching the DVD, I wanted to make some edits. I went into iMovie and did the edits.
    I did not create a new iDVD with the edited iMovie because I happened to discover that when I made the edits in iMovie, they actually translated to the original iDVD. So I saved the project in both iMovie and iDVD and burned the new DVD.
    PROBLEM: Everything came out perfect except, the audio. I have audio on the menu (which I put there) but there is no audio throughout the rest of the DVD.
    I checked my iMovie and audio is there. I reviewed the iDVD project on my computer and the audio is there. I checked the audio levels on iMovie and they're at 100%. I made sure that the "check boxes" on the 3 lines of audio were checked and operable. I checked the "map" on iDVD and there is no indication of any audio issues. Yet, when I play the newly burned DVD, there is no audio other than the menu music.
    Help!!!

    Before you burn an updated project, it is a good idea to "Delete Encoded Assets" from the Advanced menu. That will start you afresh with new encoding for the updated project.
    If you have incorrectly placed chapter markers in your movie, sometimes that can cause audio problems on a DVD. Make sure that you remove or reset any chapter marker within 1 second of the beginning or end of your movie, or in a transition. This would include the "beginning" marker that is automatically set.
    You also could try dragging your iMovie project into a new iDVD project, and burning from there.
    Instead of burning directly from iDVD, save the iDVD project as a disk image (an option from the File menu), wait until the assets have encoded (it takes a while), and then play the disk image by double clicking on it, and then clicking on your DVD player app icon on your Mac. If it plays fine, then your encoding is O.K. The next step would be to try burning a DVD from the Disk Image by using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Open the Disk Utility window and you should see your Disk Image icon displayed in the left hand pane. If it's not there, drag it into that pane. Select it and click on the burn symbol at the top of the window. Insert a DVD-R disk and then click on the "burn" button.

  • Audio in Menus and DVD file Sizes

    Hi
    I'm remaking a DVD from scratch, from a DVD which was made in a different DVD authoring program. The DVD size of the original is 1.9Gb. They had 10 audio tracks each in their own menus. The audio tracks played in full.
    Now when I add an audio track to a DVD Studio Pro, standard menu I set the duration of the menu to the length of the Audio track. This results in the menu size increasing which then takes my DVD well over the 4.7Gb file size once all the tracks are entered the same way.
    Is there any other way of having audio in a menu, that doesn't take up so much room? It seems crazy considering the audio files are 4-8Mbs. I guess it's having to render the video as well.
    Thanks
    Dave Motion

    Is there any other way of having audio in a menu, that doesn't take up so much room?
    Yes. Use Compressor to encode your audios to Dolby 2 (AC3). Take any of the existing AC3 preset in Compressor and change the following settings to keep your audio level:
    Encoding Preset: None
    Dialog Normalization: -31
    Hope that helps !

  • Pulling video out of Home DVDs

    So i have this Sony Handy Cam right and I want to start using it with my mac not just my PC. How do I pull home movies of the mini DVDs my handycam records on? I have final cut express, is there anything else I need? When ever I insert my disk it opens DVD player so obviously the finalized format is DVD and it plays just fine, but I want to pull it apart and edit and do other things with it. How is this possible?

    Use the free application MPEG Streamclip to convert movies for FCE. You'll also need to buy and install the 20$ Quicktime MPEG2 component from Apple:
    o- from MPEG Streamclip Open the .vob file(s) in the DVD VIDEO_TS folder;
    o- *Export to QuickTime* (cmd-E - NOT Export to DV!) with Compression: Apple DV-PAL (or Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), Quality: 100%, fps: 25 for PAL or 29,97 for NTSC, Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
    You'll get .mov files that can be easily imported to FCE without requiring any additional conversion/rendering.

    Error Msg - "No Audio Output Device is installed" - Mine is dv6000 series.... tried everything on this forum... fixes provided by Hp / MS did not work; sound, video and game controllers did not appear in the device manager; Recovery of driver from Recovery Manager did not work; system restore did not work. .... See how i did it.....Did a complete system Recovery to factory condition using Recovery partition... sound returned... worked for a few days... then disappeared again... so it was clear that it was not a hardware related issue but the reason was some update provided by microsoft (sp1, sp2, silverlight, internet explorer or one from those 100 updates that i got from ms after the system recovery (you can never say for sure which update neither can u pinpoint it to sp2)... its actually a conflict .... what i observed was that internet explorer update continued to fall in despite it already being installed.... so went and uninstalled it (not much of an issue just about 9 to 10 MB as compared to a fat MB of SP2). ... and there it was = sound returned !!! so did the internet explorer update which i hid from then on .  Prob solved....  The webcam which had also returned after the system recovery remained with me from thereon and was not affected by the win updates this time.  Now the only issue before me is the CD DVD Drive... which also appeared after a long period of silence (something like after many years) ie after the system recovery, but disappeared soon after the updates... so again not a hardware issue but a windows update issue... here too fixes being provided do not work... search continues for the DVD Drive restoration.

  • DVD from Elements 3.0 has no audio on Cyberlink Power DVD

    I've burnt a DVD from Elements 3.0 which seems to go okay but when I put the DVD back in to the drive and open Cyberlink Power DVD, it plays without audio.
    What's the griff with that?
    Chummy

    As a test of what Steve wrote, go back to PE, and Burn to Folder. Point CyberLink Power DVD to that folder and play from there. Do you get Audio?
    I'm with Steve in that PE does a good, DVD-spec AC3 Audio file, that *should* play fine. CyberLink Power DVD is a good software player.
    If you are not getting Audio, first place I'd check was the Audio setup on my system and then Ctrl-c from within Power DVD. What are the settings under the Audio tab there?
    Good luck,

  • How to rip lossless high res audio from VIDEO_TS folder (DVD)?

    Freeware would be nice but I'll pay if I have to.
    I want to rip the audio from a DVD Video disc (not a DVD Audio disc - already got that covered).
    Let me be clear here so as to avoid all the lossy suggestions.
    I need to rip the full resolution audio to wav. If the DVD contains 24bit 96k audio, that's what I need in wav files with NO LOSS OF ANY KIND. 16/44.1 would not be OK. Don't even think of mentioning mp3.
    I've seen "DVD Audio Extractor" mentioned but can't find an OSX version.
    Thanks

    I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here in that I used to play in a band where occasionally the sound person would record the tracks and give us a CD afterward. Although we owned the music we still had to rip it from a CD to get it into another format.
    Klaus1 is correct if what you want to do is with a DRM protected DVD. I will go out on a limb since strictly according to the Terms of Use the "no discussing" clause applies only to discussions on working around DRM protection (but frankly often any mention of any kind of DVD gets the hosts agitated and may well get this whole topic removed; still, if they don't want any talk of DVDs period then they should say so in the TOU). MPEGstreamclip might be able to do what you need. Again, that will only work with non DRM protected DVD (your family home videos).
    By the way, just about any DVD audio is already in a compressed format, be it AC3 or other audio codec, so there is already loss in quality from a raw format such as AIFF or WAV. In analogy, even the highest bitrate MP3 or AAC file is not going to be identical to the original CD.

  • DVD player plays audio CD's and DVD but no sound from DVD

    Hi All,
    I have an Asus DRW608P with the latest firmware and a TDK CDRW4800B (CDROM) The Asus plays audio CD's but if I play a DVD there is no audio using Windows media player. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card (latest driver)and I am using the analog direct to my logitech 5500's. Any ideas? Possibly a jumper or cabling issue?
    The Asus is using the Analog CD audio cable to the Audigy and the CDRom is using the digital audio cable. Both dri'ves are set to master. Should one be the slave or does it matter? Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

    I'm having the same problem. I can play the video part of a DVD but no sound. Audio CDs and Windows sounds work fine. Does this mean I'm missing a DVD codec or is there a software setting I'm missing. The Nvidia codec costs money. Is there a free codec that will fix this? This is with Windows XP and Audigy 2 LS.
    cruzmisl wrote:
    Ok I figured it out. I downloaded the Nvidia codec and it works fine. Shouldn't all the sw be aailable with the soundcard though? I really don't want to pay $40 for a codec I do not have the spdif bypass selected.....

  • No audio on One-Step DVD in iDVD

    Just recently I have been tranfering VHS to mini-DV tape and then going straight to DVD using the OneStep DVD method. I have never had a problem until recently. Now when I do that, there is no audio on the final product. Any solutions out there?

    I do have audio on the mini-dv. In fact I can load it into FCE and then make it a QT movie and create a DVD with a menu and it works fine. But, I would rather not have to download into FCE each time.
