Pulling out Highlights Clips

I'm recording HDV sports videos. I start and stop between each play, which, on capture, creates one clip per play.
After a game, I capture the tape, create a basic game video with minor editing, chapter marks, and title.
I want to then go through each game, find clips for a highlight reel. Right now I'm using the Log Note field in the Browser to note the players name and type of play--is that the best method (I was simply renaming clips in i-Movie, which had a few advantages)
Given each game takes 30-40GB of disk space, I'd like to segregate the highlight clips with the media files so I can delete the rest of the media to free up space.
What are the best ways of doing this?
Thanks
iMAC4,1 2GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.5 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   FCE 3.5.1; Canon XH-A1

FCE is a non-destructive editor, meaning that no matter what you do in editing, it does not physically change the source media files (clips). No amount of editing, cutting, marking, dv start/stop detecting, making subclips, effects, transitions, etc. will physically change your source media files. Therefore even your 'highlights' sequence won't physically split any of your source media files.
In order to keep only the highlights material (just portions of the clips you Captured from your camera) you will have to assemble your highlights sequence and export it as a self-contained QuickTime movie (no QT Compression). Once you have the self-contained QT movie you can delete all of the source clips. From that point on, you will use your self-contained QT movie for distribution as well as future re-editing.
If you plan to re-edit the highlights movie in the future, keep in mind that the movie itself will be your source media.
If you do delete the original source media files (what you captured from your camera), I'd suggest keeping the FCE project file just in case you need to recapture the material from tape sometime in the future.

  • Pulling out the end of a song SHIFTS where the song is!

I'm doing a clip with a song in it..I've spliced the intro together a few times to give extra time for narration that won't conflict with singing, should the presenter want to make comments.
Now, I get to the final segment, and I'd like to just pull out the end of that segment to the end of the song. I test play it, and everything's fine.
    Then, I render.
When I test play after rendering, it's like where the song was "shifted" over, when all I did was extend where the clip ends.
Do I need to start over, or is this just a dumb user mistake?
    thanks!

I know you think you've made it perfectly clear to us what you're doing.
I've read your post three times and I have no idea what you're talking about because you're not using the proper lingo.
    a clip with a song in it< </div>
You probably mean a sequence. Sequences are made of clips.
I've spliced the intro together a few times to give extra time for narration that won't conflict with singing, should the presenter want to make comments.< </div>
    SPLICED? Presenter?
    the final segment,< </div>
Segment of what, the sequence or part of clip?
and I'd like to just pull out the end of that segment to the end of the song. < </div>
Do you mean move it? Or extend it? Or actually make it longer by stretching the audio?
    I test play it, and everything's fine.< Okay. </div>
When I test play after rendering, it's like where the song was "shifted" over, when all I did was extend where the clip ends.< </div>
What did you have to render? You should not have had to render anything.

  • Shadow and highlight clipping

Over the past few weeks I have noticed something with correcting shadow and highlight clipping in LR 5.7 and 5.7.1 I was not aware of and would like some opinions.
In one sentence, it appears that there is highlight clipping both in the White and Highlight portion of the histogram and shadow clipping in the Shadows and Blacks portion of the histogram. Up until recently I had assumed that if I wanted to globally recover highlights, I had to bring the Whites down. However, I have now seem quite a few photos, taken with different cameras (all Nikon), where the highlight clipping warning only went away after reducing the Highlights by -5.

What you are seeing is perfectly normal for images with moderate to high dynamic range. The LR PV2012 Tone controls should be adjusted using a top-down workflow. Here's what I have found that works well:
PV2012 Basic Panel Tone Control Adjustment Procedure
Start with all of the Tone controls at their default 0 settings and adjust them from the top-down in the order shown below.
    1. Set Exposure to correct midtone brightness ignoring the highlight and shadow areas for now. Setting Exposure slightly higher (+.25 to +.50 EV) than what looks correct for the midtones seems to work best with most images.
    2. Leave Contrast at 0 for now. It’s usually better to adjust this after the first pass.
    3. Adjust Highlights so that blown out areas are recovered and “fine tonal detail” is revealed.
    4. Adjust Shadows to reveal fine detail in dark areas. For most normal images simply setting +Shadows = -Highlights (Example +50 and -50) works very well.
    5. The Whites control sets the white clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
    6. The Blacks control sets the black clipping point, which you can see by holding down the ALT key as you move the slider. Adjust it to the point where you see clipping appear with the ALT key.
    7. Now go back and adjust the Contrast control to establish the best midtone contrast.
    8. Lastly touch-up the Exposure control for the best midtone brightness.
    9. If necessary “touch-up” the controls using the same top-down workflow.

  • Auto adjust in PV 2012 results in highlight clipping

Is there any control over the Auto adjust process in PV 2012? I'm using ACR 7.4. The Auto adjustment on the Basic panel seems too hot - by perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 f-stop (net effect on the histogram) and it usually results in a significant amount of highlight clipping. Auto adjust using PV 2010 seems more reasonable.
For example, using the same image, here's a comparison of the Auto settings:
    PV 2012: Exposure +1.15, Contrast -9, Highlights 0, Shadows 0, Whites +41, Blacks -45
It results in some highlight clipping.
    PV 2010: Exposure +1.10, Recovery 0, Fill 0, Black +10, Brightness 0, Contrast +35
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks Frank. And I concur with Robert Shomler: auto-toned settings may not be usable "out of the box", but it can sometimes help to see what auto-toner would do with the various settings, especially whites, but also contrast and highlight/shadows (and blacks).
Sometimes I get stuck in a rut, and hit auto-tone, and go oh-yeah, I'm banging my head against a wall because I need more whites and less exposure, etc... (at which point I usually undo the auto-tone and continue manual toning, but more enlightened...),

  • Highlights clipped away when importing AE from FCP

I'm sure this has been posted but I can't find anything.
Importing a blown-out video clip into after effects, the color and luma values over 100% are clipped as if a Broadcast Safe filter has been applied.
If I export from FCP as Apple Prores (HQ) and re-import it, it's fine. All the information above 100% are still there.
If I import it into After Effects and export it back to FCP as Apple Prores (HQ), all the values are clipped away that were over 100% in the vetroscope. Seems like I lose my highlights as soon as I import it into AE. Is this normal? Am I supposed to bring the levels down before working in AE?
I have Mac Pro 3.0, latest After Effect CS4 and FCP. The latest Quicktime. AJA Lhe HD card.

I recommend taking a look at the post on ProRes colors in AE, in Todd Kopriva's blog, Region of Interest.

  • Highlighting clips

So I am putting together a highschool Football highlight video from all this past seasons games.  As of right now I am putting all of the games in their own sequences and then going through them to find the highlight clips.  As I come across one that I think will make the reel I just drag it from Video 1 up to Video 2 so that it stands out in the timeline.  My question is, is there anyway that I can select all the clips that are in Video 2 and change something on them so that it is visible in the Project Panel?  I thought I would be able to select them all and change their label color but it does not change the label color in the Project Panel.  It just changes the color of the clip in the timeline.  I was wanting to change something visible in the Project Panel so that I can then just sort by that field and have all of my highlight clips in one easy to find place.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Phil

I think I like this one better.  That way it will also add to the usage count and give me a sortable vaule in the Project Panel.  Thanks again for the help Colin.  I was thinking that I would just duplicate each sequence and then delete Video 1 so that it would give the sortable value of the clip count, then after sorting drop them all into their own timeline.  You way give MUCH less clutter though, since there is 12 seperate timelines already for all the games.
Thank You for taking time to help!

  • Odd difference between shadow and highlight clipping

A newly imported RAW file I started to process shows what I thought to be odd behaviour when the shadow clipping button was pressed ; initially the trunk of a tree in deep shadow showed large areas of shadow clipping , and was so mostly blue .
Then , when the Fill Light slider was pulled across from 0 to say 30 , the blue colour indicating shadow clipping started to disappear , and definite detail started to appear . Examination at 300% shows that differentiated pixels appear directly from the blue ones , and aren`t just adjacent to the blue originally .
I thought that shadow clipping was exactly analogous to highlight clipping , and that pixel info had been permanently lost from these areas , with RGB;0:0:0 , just like blown highlights .
So is the shadow clipping indication an absolute measurement , or is it somehow relative , and if so to what ? Anyone able to suggest the underlying mechanism and any answers ? Thanks in advance .
Nikon D70 NEFs into XP on an Athlon XP 2200 with 1 GB RAM .

The clipping (shadows and highlights) indicates clipping in the current rendering, not in the RAW data. If the "RAW" data is a JPEG, you can't recover highlights, just shadows. If the "RAW" data is a RAW, you can't tell from the clipping indicators if the RAW data is clipped or not. You may be able to recover using the develop tools.

  • Report for pulling out data of Pricing Ref. Material

    Hi All,
I want to know the transaction or report which can pull out the data of pricing ref. material used for any material in Sales Org .2 view. I mean to say that, if there are 100 materials created and 50 of them have a pricing material field populated by some xyz material then how can I pull out those 50 material numbers for which the pricing ref. material is populated along with the pricing ref. material number?
    Await your quick response.

    Hi
These are  the standard reports for the material related.
    Material Analysis-Incoming orders - MC(E
Material Analysis- Invoiced Sales - MC+Q
    Material Returns-Analysis - MC+M
But i think you need to go for LIS , by creating a user defined report where in you need to take the character sics as pricing reference material (MATNR) as one of them

  • How do I show multiple rollover images on a page inserted dynamically (pulled out of a sql database

How do I show multiple rollover images on a page inserted dynamically (pulled out of a sql database table) using Dreamweaver’s Repeat Region. Example: I have different products each one associated (through their productID) with two images (one that’s showing in the page and one for the rollover effect) that are pulled from a database using Dreamweaver’s Recordset. So I want to end up with a page containing row after row of images(one for every product). When moused over each image will reveal the second (rollover) image for the same product which in turn can be a link(the image itself ) that when clicked leads to a detailed page with more information about the product the image is associated with. To show row after row with images for the different products in the database table I am using Dreamweaver’s Insert Rollover Image command and then the  Repeat Region – I have no problem to complete the steps, to insert the image and the rollover one at once and set the paths so they are pulled dynamically depending on the productID they are associated with .I have also no problem to apply the Repeat Region so not only the first image associated with the first product in the table is shown but all of them-a routine and standard procedure when using the Repeat Region to dynamically generate and display multiple rows of data. However, when I preview the page the rollover effect is lost –the images are shown but when moused over the second  image does not  show. The problem is caused when the Repeat Region is applied-once again I am allowed to apply it but the rollover stops working, a kind of interference. ANY SOLLUTION PLEASE, ANY WORK AROUND.

I gotta tell you, using multiple images for rollover effects is going to be a big challenge in your dynamic scenario.
If this were my product page, I would use thumbnails with a bit of CSS opacity or filters to desaturate and make them full opacity/color on mouse over.  Nice effect with much less bandwidth. Easily done globally with CSS code.

  • I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?

I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1 to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?  Each time I try a different password (trying any that I thought I might have originally used) it times out the tablet for up to an hour before I can try again.  Help?

You can restore the device. That is what you have to do if you forget the passcode. You don't have to worry about syncing to your own computer either since you don't want to restore your data - you want to wipe it clean. Read these articles for more instructions

Sometimes you may not be able to bypass the passcode at all when you try to restore. You may need to restore by putting the iPad into recovery mode. I have heard from some users that they did not have to do this when they restore after forgetting the passcode - but just in case you need the information, this will help you with that procedure.

  • Pulling out two records at a time

I have a TABLE with multiple records in it, of which i want to pull out two records at a time (as if they were one record), of those records that meet the WHERE criteria. Order is not important. Basically, i have a TABLE of things that wither need processing or have been processed already. I can process two at a time. (In a related search, that i am not up to yet, i can do 20 at a time.) How would i go about doing that?
My first thought was a CTE with ROW_NUMBER() RN, using CONNECT BY RN = PRIOR RN + 2, and have a sub-query (or joined TABLE) pull out the second record:
WITH Moo (SELECT ... ROW_NUMBER RN FROM Table WHERE ...)
    SELECT ..., (SELECT ... FROM FROM Moo Moo2 WHERE Moo2.Id = Moo.Id + 1)
    FROM Moo CONNECT BY Id = PRIOR Id + 2;
Or a join. Is there a better way to approach it?

Pretty much everything you just said is wrong.
    >
I generally keep away from CURSORs, as i want the DB to handle the set processing for me, as opposed to a CURSOR which tells the DB how to do it's job.
    >
If you do any DB queries then you are using cursors. You have the wrong idea about them. All result sets are obtained using a cursor. A cursor does NOT tell a DB how to do a job; that is what the query and execution plan do.
    >
(And, Tom Kyt's mantra of "You should do it in a single SQL statement if at all possible") But that's just a rule of thumb.
    >
No - that isn't a rule of thumb. That is exactly what you should do if possible which is what I said. But I also said
    >
Well the general use is to use SQL instead of PL/SQL but since you already need to use a function you might as well make that function as efficient as possible.
    >
If you are already using a function then you should get the most bang for the buck from it and make it as efficient as possible.
    >
If the CURSOR is the most efficient, so be it. But as you point out, if i'm already going to use a CURSOR, i might as well do all the work in the CURSOR LOOP. Why bother switching contexts.
    >
All queries are done using cursors. It isn't a question of whether they are more efficient; it is the only way possible. I think you are referring to a user creating an explicit cursor and performing explicit manipulation of that cursor. That isn't normally what you want to do.
A cursor loop is the slowest way to process results especially if all you are doing is row-by-row processing to perform essentially SQL-related work. PL/SQL should be used for the transactional part of the processing. In your case that transactional use is consolidating two records together for specialized processing.
As for context switches if you perform any PL/SQL you are going to have a context switch: functions, procedures, triggers. The function you already planned to use would have caused a context switch. What I am saying is that if you are going to perform a context switch then you want to maximize the amount of work (transactional work) done in the PL/SQL engine so that you minimize the context switching.
You still haven't explained exactly why 2 records at a time is any more ideal than 1 or if you could also process 50, 100, or 10000 at a time. Is the limit what needs to be passed somewhere else? What is the reason for a max of two? What exactly are you doing with the data to prepare it before you have to pass it on?
Bulk collect processing is more efficient, with fewer context switches, if you process 20, 50, or 100 records in the loop at a time.
