PulseAudio AND gnome 2.22 sound
I have installed pulse audio following the wiki and its working fine but I can't hear any event sounds of gnome even though they are enabled.
same here.
2.20.x was fine.
i'm using acer aspire 5672 laptop.
here is keyboard part of my xorg.conf

No TV sound - Problem with Pulseaudio and Gnome
Hi Community!
Since January 2013 I got big problems with the sound of my tvcard. The card is a Sundtek Media TV Pro. But after all the problems have nothing to to with the card itself!
So far I found out, that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
- Sound works under Windows on same PC.
- Sound don't work under Arch - not with tvtime, not with vlc, etc.
- Problem occurs even on a new installed system with the Arch-2013-02-01 install medium.

After setting up a new Arch installation with just xorg-server, gnome, tvtime and the sundtek driver from AUR I run journalctl -b:

So, if I understand right, pulseaudio is alreade started by the rtkit-daemon and gnome couldn't start it again.
At https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30926 I found a hint concerning /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop and /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop.
After removing them from /etc/xdg/autostart and running journalctl -b there are no more errors.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'pulseaudio' I get:

I started tvtime again. This time I ran rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ and killall pulseaudio to kill the Pulseaudio server. I instantly got a loud noise out of my speakers.
I closed tvtime and re-opened it. And there it was: TV SOUND OUT OF MY SPEAKERS!
But now, when I run pavucontrol I get:
Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
In this cas this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 root Windows Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Windows.
If this is the case, then PuseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you sould run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.
I got the information from Sundtek, that Pulseaudio should not be started as system service. Instead, every user should have an own Pulseaudio daemon and that PA was concepted this way. But they don't know how it is implemented in ArchLinux.
I also don't know it exactly. So the question to all you ArchLinu pro's:
How is PA implemented in Arch? And how can I sustainable solve my problem?

I can recognize that the STATs have changed. Maybe this can help to solve the problem? -
I have a Creative HS-950 headset and I can get sound using Pulseaudio, however, it makes Pulseaudio crash quite often. It usually happens when I start watching a video, be it on Youtube or from my disk. Normally all I have to do is choosing the headset again in the sound preferences, but it is still very annoying.
Another issue I have is that whenever I open Skype, it takes a while before my microphone works (there's not input signal for a minute or so).
Also, this doesn't happen if I use Ubuntu so I guess the headset is not the problem.
I'm using Gnome 3 (fallback mode). 64-bit system.

Enable=Source,Sink,Headset,Gateway,Control,Socket,Media
to /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf. And then restart the bluetooth service / daemon.
# systemctl restart bluetooth.service
# or, whatever ...
# rc.d restart bluetooth
Then it works again. This may just be a systemd artefact, however. -
Pulseaudio and multiple X11 sessions
I wanted to create a second X11 server for a game that I can't tab out of. I'm using gnome-shell. Pulseaudio only plays audio when on display :0, anyway for it to play audio no matter what term/display you are on?
ThanksOh, right in the face. I have wasted so much time, trying to get pulseaudio even close to outputting sound from different users over different X sessions at the same time. This gets gradually worse, the closer you come to trying to pull that off over HDMI.

It will tell you, how your use case is too uncommon to be within the scope of PA. It will tell you, how annoying it would be, if more than one user could output sound at the same time and how wrong people are, when they misinterpret the term "multi-user". I could, but will not, rage all night about how people really think, audio and video can be compared in a meaningful way. *makes weird noises*
However, reading the post, you will notice, that the guy talks about running pulseaudio system-wide. This should be your query on your favorite crawler. I have stopped using PA, because it brought more abstraction for no effects. -
[SOLVED] After upgrade gdm and Gnome don't work.
Hi,
after I did an upgrade I had some ldconfig: errors and fixed them all using pkgfile and reinstallation of quite some packages.
But now starting gdm with
# systemctl start gdm
only leads to a black screen with a cross shaped cursor I can move. Nothing more.
Xorg works -- I'm writing this post from KDE.
I reinstalled gnome and gnome-extra. Still no success.
System is up to date.
Hopefully my logs will help, I have no idea what to do. Thanks for any help. :)

libcanberra-pulse from [extra] was broken. I reinstalled it with --force.

Pulseaudio and systemd --user: DBus scope issues?
Hi,
I have a multi-seat setup, so I need user-wide pulseaudio and whatnot. I'm trying to setup my boot through systemd --user.
Testing audio working apps are firefox, mpv, and mpd. The problem is:
- If I start pulseaudio and mpd manually everything is fine (no use of systemd)
- If I start pulseaudio through systemd no application has sound.
- If I start pulseaudio and mpd through systemd only mpd has sound.

If I add BusName=org.pulseaudio.Server to the pulseaudio.service nothing changes.
Using pulseaudio's autospawn=yes leads to what seems to be same behaviour: mpd by systemd starts pulseaudio and is the only app with sound.
./config/pulse/client.conf only contains default-sink. Everything else is default.
Using alsa alone is not an option because of firefox.
Any thoughts?

In the future, you can bring focus to a thread by providing more information.. Tell us what you have tried, what you have read since the last post, etc. At least it gives the impression that you are working the problem rather than merely waiting for a response.
I don't know almost anything about systemd, especially because it changes so rapidly and documention is so scarce and outdated that either I read the whole documentantion for my version in hopes of finding my problem (something for which I do not have time) or post a topic.
I posted everything I touched regarding systemd since the installation of my system, that's all the relevant information I know I can give, so at this point I had no more info to give.
Actually posting a topic is really my last resort, it usually means that I have already tried everything I knew and I'm hopeless already.

I could start things. Pulseaudio started, so did mpd. I also have a /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user process started for each user. I assumed this would be it since this

Fixed it. Don't remember where I read that it wasn't required, just that it was in the same place I found someone else complaining about getting this error.
For anyone else encountering this: sed -i s/system-auth/system-login/g /etc/pam.d/systemd-user
and systemctl --user will work. Insults fly out to the one who wrote it wasn't required!
Still am not able to get an active session though

JDS and Gnome start, but all applications become fixed in upper left hand
Problem:
Java Desktop and Gnome start, but all applications are fixed in the upper left hand corner and become stacked on top of each other.
Multi-panel JDS does not start up, and I am forced into one window, which makes the above problem critical.
Conditions: New installation (not an upgrade) I experienced this problem. Attempted to connect from SGD. Using the following command

I obviously don't know if there really is or not (I'm guessing not, if all the windows are stuck in the top left of the screen), but running "metacity --replace &" in a terminal should force it to start up.
The gnome-settings-daemon warning is annoying, but non-fatal. It will usually just cause some icons and fonts to look incorrect. You can try running "/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon" again manually in a terminal, which will sometimes clear it up straight away. If not, I see you attempted to clean up some things in the home directory manually, but running "/usr/bin/gnome-cleanup" in a terminal (while not logged into JDS) might be a better thing to try. -
Unmute issues with pulseaudio and pnmixer
Hi,
i'm using Pulseaudio and Pnmixer(Development version) on my laptop. Since a few weeks i am unable to unmute the sound with the laptop hotkeys, when its muted. Muting with hotkey works fine. To unmute i have to open pavucontrol and unmute the sound under the output section.
I'm getting the error "Mixer detach error:file or path not found" if i change the device from default to HDA-Intel and vice versa in the device section of Pnmixer.
Maybe someone can help me. Thanks!

I am trying to record a meditation from my Macbook Air and an annoying loud sound, like a burp, will suddenly erupt from the MacBook, necessitating I start again. Any ideas on how I may stop this, or what it is??
Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data. -

I tried to access my Mother's bank for online banking. She has had a slow decline with dementia, I'm Power Of Attorney for her. When not being able to sign in, I heard through the iPad 4 Wi-fi 64 gig, a measured buzz sound, like ppffzzzttt. I've had 3 / 4 & 4.5 and never heard this sound before.
I have had Power of Attorney for my Mom for quite some time. She has been suffering with dementia in a slow then sped up type after her last heart attack. I was the worst candidate for the job but no one else would take it.
I set up banking on line so I could pay her bills. I am disabled and have trouble paying my own. The iPad again filled those shoes perfectly.
I logged on yesterday, and the page said, user name not found. I figured it might have been server maintenance or poor typing but even with all personal details the server would not send my user name.
I became concerned because today I received the Vudu letter that said their headquarters were broken into on March 25th, 2013, and a number of hard drives were stolen with all info they keep on me. They set up an all clear id free of charge for a year, if I wanted to take advantage of it which I did.
The part that bothers me is when I was inputting my Mother's sensitive id information my iPad 4 / Wi-Fi / 64 gig emitted a measured buzz sound 3 times. I have had the 3 / 4 / 4.5 / faster processor but did not go for the 128 gig 4.75, and in all that time I have never heard that sound.
The question, was the bank computer or the FBI probing my iPad 4 and did it place something on it in the memory or damage it in anyway.
I was on the phone for the next three hours with the good, bad and ugly at Citizens. After talking to an acquaintance bank manager who said she saw no problem and did not know why I could not log in. I spent the next three hours on the phone and ended up talking to a nasty tech who said, it was a rule that I could not do my Mother's banking on line anymore. A "rule" prevented me from acting in that manner. It all, from every party sounded so "hinky," Don Johnson, Miami Vice and wondered if there was a rule at all.
I asked him why and what triggered the on line banking system to suddenly boot me? The fact I had set it up about one year ago to date and it has performed flawlessly since that time and a whole year later it flagged the account. He said it could have been anything, pressing the wrong key, etc. I knew he was getting edgy so I ended up getting off the line with him because nothing would be accomplished.
I would appreciate any and all speculations, ideas, or suggestions as I look over banking law, rules, in the next few days. By the way, the money we are talking about is miniscule. A small SS check and an even smaller pension check.

halfcackThat situation went from inconvenient to complicated quickly. Wait for any pending orders to drop off, wait for things to clear up, wait till your upgrade comes up and then upgrade when your contract is fulfilled. I would have suggested a replacement phone, I know, with only a month left why couldn't you just upgrade early, but these situations where people try to upgrade early always end horribly and once a phone order starts, it almost cannot finish until something winds up shipped received and returned. Sorry this happened the way it did. Definitely not efficient.

I would like to see and access the correct sound patches from my E-mu mps orchestral plus from inside of logic express.
Right now , I have access to some of the sound files but most are missing and all are incorrectly labeled.
Is it possible to ("Library") these sound files or access them from logic?

I have tried to reset it with the home and power buttons. Whats wrong and how can I fix it? I think it might be the memory or the battery. What could the clicking sound be related to? Thanks
Try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then try restoring the iPod. For recovery mode see:

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.

Premiere Pro 2.0 and Windows 7 - Direct Sound Input soundcard driver problem
My XP machine crashed, I reinstalled Premiere Pro 2.0 with Windows 7, and I got the following error: 'The Currently installed soundcard driver does not support Direct Sound Input. Recording audio is not possible.' The soundcard drivers are updated. Any ideas? Here's what I have: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor 3.40 GHz 8 GB, 64 bit. Thank you for looking.

Insert Micropone or any jack in Micropone Input or Aux Input, on your sound card or motherboard !
