Punctuation issues

I'm publishing my sites to a folder. When I open them in Safari, they look great, but when I upload them, and then open them, again in Safari, some of the quotation marks and apostraphies have turned into diamond-shaped question marks. When I open the same sites in Explorer, the troubling quotation marks disappear.
Just to reiterate, only some of the quote marks are problematic. Others are fine. I just can't find the variable that distinguished them. This is happening on all the sites I'm creating.
I've tried changing fonts, changing colors, etc.

InDesign CS6 thinks every chapter in my book is Chapter 1

I created this document for a client more than a year ago, and he just now noticed a really odd bug in the last PDF rendered. Every chapter, starting with chapter 4, is being recognized as the first chapter. Previous PDF exports show all chapter numbers rendering correctly, but unfortunately I long ago overwrote the previous versions of the InDesign document. The attached screenshots should demonstrate the issue. The only changes made from the previous version to the new version were corrections to the text itself—minor punctuation issues, typographical errors, etc.—so I see no reason why this issue should be happening from one version to the next. Googling has so far gotten me nowhere. Does anyone have any idea what's going wrong?

Try to select all chapters on the book panel and from flyout arrow select update numbering>update all numbers, then from book page panel click on synchronize button.

Messaging Problems

Hey guys,
first off, I'm not sure if this is the right section to post my problem, but I find it suits best. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
Now to my problem:
If I write a message everything works fine until I type a '+' and try to delete this character, then every non-alphabetic and non-numeric character plus the last character, no matter the type, is deleted, e. g. if I type something like
"kisses :-+" (+ mistyped for *) and then try to correct the message by trying to delete the last character, it looks like this: "kisse", "s :-+" is completely deleted. This happens, no matter how many non-alphabetic and non-numeric characters are between + and the last alphabetic/numeric character. This gets frustrating as soon as you type
"kisses :-:-:-+" and try to correct the '+', cause all smilies are deleted and only "kisse" remains.
Is this a bug?

Mine does the same, this is either going to be a bug in the messaging app or it could be a punctuation issue within SMS itself. Have anybody you can call and ask to try this on a different phone, say an Android?

You may have Align to Pixel Grid ticked in the Transform palette, and Align New Objects to Pixel Grid in the flyout options.
If so, select everything and untick both.
Otherwise, you may have a punctuation issue where the decimals should be shown with full stop/dot or comma and is the opposite. That would be a Regional/Language issue.
Or a corruption of preferences.

Extracted punctuation and editting issues in Contacts

I waited to install from 10.6.8 because of the many issues I saw/heard people were having, then I heard that it was fine and I installed 10.8.2 but wow, what a nightmare!
The most tragic issue is the new format of Address Book. First of all, the new "Contacts" application is horrendous and looks like a 1988 Corel Draw design, if Corel was around back then. What gives? I've learned that if something works—Don't fix it! Who at Apple allowed for this to go through? The staff must have had a lot of beer and wine that day! Is Apple going to turn its OS into a kiddie book because that is what this application looks like. Please return us to our original glory; there was no need for this circumcision ("to cut, about, around, and through").
First, it seems that there are the two duplicate file systems, but since I don't know what or where iCloud is, I am not willing to make that my primary backup site. So I have to read the manual about that.
Here is the actual problem, when installed, Contacts actually strips the punctuation from all my emails. This means the symbol ("@") and the periods (".") in my emails. Even though I manually try to edit this, I am not allowed to make edits in the emails!
In addition, I can no longer add new phone numbers or entries, as one would do by clicking on the green "+" symbol. The only thing I can do, is write notes, and click on the delete entries ("-").
I wonder why, with so many issues, Apple hasn't fixed this promptly, and/or returned to the previous Address Book version?

Actually I did not import, I just reinstalled the new software and it automatically did that. I have tried resetting the PRAM and that didn't do anything but as soon as I figure out where the Power button is on my wireless Apple keyboard, I will try to rest the Mac Mini, which is lacking some feature, I read somewhere, so sometimes this causes problems.

Crystal for VS 2010 - formatting issues in viewer (extra space) again

We're having the same problem as the one in this thread link:[Crystal 2008 for VS 2010 - Report formatting issues in viewer (extra space);. There's no resolution in the thread and it's been closed. I'm hoping that creating a new thread may cause someone to answer this problem.
We have a Windows App that we just converted to .NET 4.0 and updated the viewer to the Crystal Reports Viewer in VS 2010. When we open a report that has a large block of static text in paragraphs left-aligned the spacing around punctuation is awful - there's almost a tab's worth of space between the last letter and the period. U.S. looks like US. This happens both with reports that were created in VS2008 and ones that were created in VS2010. It is only a problem in the viewer's display - if we print to a printer or export to PDF the spacing around punctuation is fine. It's also not a problem on our development workstations which are running Windows 7, but is a problem on our test servers which are running Windows 2003 Server. I ran the modules tool and found that the version of usp10.dll does match what the previous thread said it should be and it's coming from the c:\program files\sap businessobjects\crystal reports for .net framework 4.0\common\sap businessobjects enterprise xi 4.0\win32_x86\ folder. On my development machine when I run the modules tool I notice that a second instance of usp10.dll is called which is the version installed with Windows 7. We've tried changing fonts but none of the ones we've tried (originally in Times New Roman, 12, tried Arial, Times and various sizes) have made a difference. We also tried changing the print options with no improvement. The only thing that makes it slightly better is full-alignment but our customer insists that it be left-aligned.

Re. the other thread. I never did receive a sample of the report to test with. Perhaps I can get one from you? I need you to ensure that the issue occurs with a "saved data" report. If it does, let me know if you can share it and I'll contact you via email. My comment in the other thread re. available time, priorities, etc., still applies. Also, just to be clear. Service Pack 2 for CRVS2010 is closed now. Thus if I am able to reproduce the issue the fix will be targeted for October \ November time frame - no guarantees though...

A305D-S6886 New Hard Drive - Can't Wake From Sleep, BIOS issue

Well I hope this is the right area and this gets listened to, I use sleep often... >.<
Laptop is a A305D-S6886 Satellite bought from ToshibaDirect.
So I dropped my laptop, and the HDD is busted. No biggy right? So I bought a new one. Spefically this one. It is a Western Digital, my Dell laptop friend used it, good reviews, exact equilivant to the one I use. Great!
So I add it right in, easy enough. Boot up the laptop, install Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Install all of my software, Toshiba software, copy all files, all updates, etc. It is done!
Go to school next day, and while using laptop it feels funny, like it keeps hanging. Why? It hangs when I try to resume from sleep/standby OR hibernation! That won't do. I do a bit of Googling. Tried that hotfix for 1 TB or bigger SATA hard drives, didn't work. More Googling shows this is an issue with Win7 in the beta/release client, both 32 and 64 bits. Nothing on the RTM or build 7600 except for the 1 TB or bigger SATA hard drives. Hm, maybe the HDD is broken?
With into Ubuntu 9.10 x64 Desktop edition, opened up wonderful thing called "Disk Utility." It said the following: Disk was healthy, no bad sectors, and Self-test past. Well then let's run a through SMART test! I did, and it still passed. Hm, hard drive seems perfect, so what can I do? Fiddle with BIOS settings of course! (I have version 2.10)
So the only option I could find related to SATA or HDDs was SATA mode, which had the follow options: Compatibility or AHCI. It was on AHCI, so let's try Compatibility! That didn't work, still crashed. What is next? Let's install OEM Vista that came with my computer! (Vista SP1 x64 bit)
So yay, it is done! Let's put it to sleep! What's this a crash? Then it is OS independent! Now to decide which hardware it could be: BIOS, or hard drive. Next up: stick it in my desktop and install Windows 7!
So yay, w7 has installed! Put it to sleep, it works fine! Wow what could it be? I didn't have an OEM partition before, because of the new driver, could it have been an update, or maybe the BIOS? Clean install and back on laptop!
3rd W7 install later, it crashes on sleep! OEM and software/drivers is out, so that leaves BIOS! D: This took me 2 days, and I don't think I missed any possibilities. I am pretty technically able and confident, so if you have any idea what else it could be, please reply! I use sleep often! D:
P.S. I want more options in the BIOS! D:

Sounds like something else besides the hard drive was "busted" when you dropped it. Does it do this when you use hybernation as well as when you use sleep?
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Text issue seems to be unresolved for many...

My web-pages and menus (outside of offline) continue to display diacritics (non-english letters with accents)! They're added into words, grammatical punctuation is substituted for these letters. Sometimes I suffer from text overlapping it's frames, divs, text-areas etc. I don't know what the issue is. Websites suggest to find duplicates and resolve them in my font book, but that doesn't PERMANENTLY solve the issue, nor does it resolve the text coming out of it's frames. I would REALLY like someone to give me REAL advice; Preferably, but not limited to someone who's experienced this issue and has resolved the problem permanently.

Download Font Nuke. Close all other applications you may have running.
Run Font Nuke and click on the "Nuke Font Caches" button at the upper left. The panel will fill with other choices. At the lower right, first click "Update Caches List". It will search your hard drive for font cache files and list them. The purpose being simply so you can see what is about to be removed. Click the "Nuke Font Caches" button at the bottom right. Your Mac will restart. Don't attempt to stop the restart. You should always restart immediately after removing any cache files.
Most of the time, this is all that's needed to correct font issues in OS X. If not you may be missing fonts the web site needs to display properly. Read my article, Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther. It explains the minimum fonts you should have active on your Mac at all times. For web pages in particular, the following fonts get used a lot.

Acrobat 9 OCR issues

I am trying to make several hundred pages worth of PDF documents searchable. I have tried everything I can think of with the OCR recognition, and cannot figure out a way to display and edit OCR suspects. No matter which format I try and perform OCR recognition in (Searchable Image, Searchable Image (Exact), or ClearScan), I am told there are no OCR suspects. However, when I copy and paste the text to a Word document, there are obviously errors. From what I understand, Find OCR Suspects is only supposed to work with ClearScan, but it doesn't. In addition, it seems that even if it did work, trying to correct the errors using the TouchUp Text tool won't work anyway, because the program converts everything to custom fonts, and it wants a system font available in order to edit. I cannot figure out how to convert this text to a system font to make edits.
To sum up, here are my issues:
1. Why are OCR suspects not displayed when OCR recognition is performed?
2. How is it possible to fix errors in ClearScan if a system font is required?
3. How does one convert the ClearScan document to a system font so edits can be made?
4. What is the point of performing OCR on a document if one cannot go in and fix errors so the file can be searched and indexed properly? As I said, I have hundreds of pages of scanned documents that need to be made searchable.

When using Searchable Image (Exact) or Searchable Image there will be no "suspects".
"Suspects" is not a functionality associated with either; rather it is exclusive to
Formatted Text & Graphics (Acrobat 8 & earlier) or ClearScan (Acrobat 9).
Keep in mind that use of OCR (from any software house) does not assure 100% rendering
let alone 100% fidelity of whatever is rendered.
If that is needed then it is time to open the authoring application and created an authoring file
that holds the content. Output this to native PDF.
When Formatted Text & Graphics or ClearScan is used if there are characters that are not recognized
then these are left as raster images. These will not "copy-paste" to a text editor anymore that a jpeg would.
A number of variables dictate/control how successful any OCR is. Some are -
--| effective resolution of (both horizontally and vertically) - impacts fidelity and accuracy
--| quality of source paper (a simple fold line of otherwise "good" paper can leave a wide band void of OCR output)
--| scanner software
--| scanner lamp (quality/intensity)
--| scanner cleanliness/maintenance
On to the "point" of OCR --
Actually, it is *not* to provide a simple, low resource demand, mechanism to development of digital content that can under go
editing-formatting-layout changes. Never has been.
OCR/ICR, etc. primary functionality has been/is to provide a find/search capability.
OCR/ICR has little to no understanding of layout, format, word - line - paragraph structure, etc.
If one needs "proper" digital content (spelling, punctuation, syntax, layout, format, etc.) then one
must master the content into authoring files using the appropriate word processor or page layout application.
Typically, even older source paper can provide good images from scan provided an adequate scanner is used.
Once in PDF OCR (searchable image (exact)) provides high fidelity/accuracy.
From this, catalog indices may be developed.
In conjunction with PDFs having useful metadata the use of Search across one or several "mounted" Catalog index/indices
provides accurate results.
Changing ClearScan font.
Content selected, you need to get into the Properties dialog of the TouchUp Text Tool.
There, go to the Text tab. Adjust settings to pull from available fonts on local machine.
Expect to to this one PDF page at a time.

Auto text/Punctuation not working correctly?

Hi there, I've recently got a Curve 9320 model, and although the capitalization and auto grammar and punctuation work fine when I'm typing text messages, it will not work on apps, for example I use AIM a lot, and the words I type will be lower case, and have no grammar or punctuation. However my previous phone was the older Curve, and auto spell and punctuation feature worked for everything.
Any idea on how to get it to work with apps, especially AIM?

Localized forms won't show properly on punctuations (Arabic)

I am encountering continuously (when working with Arabic) problems with localized forms.
See screenshots:
1 .This is what I want to get (localized form for colon) but the ® mark must be superscripted.
2. When superscripting ® mark, localized style is gone and colon appear to be regular ('square') version.
3. Same happen with brackets, full stops and so on:
Now, I can resolve the issue by using Body Text paragraph style with [No Language] and then use nested GREP with Character Style set to English to keep punctuation consistent (Arabic may randomly leave localized forms and un-localized). However English or any other language may not apply non-localized forms to the punctuations in effect we will be left with random punctuation forms across the text. Also even when character style have 'Localized Forms' function checked (IndicPlus Plug-In):
the function doesn't work at all.
Problem usually appear when we have Latin (Roman) character around the punctuation - that forces next character to be non-localized form. Sometimes help to place Non-joiner (or even hair space) between those character but chances that we get correct form for punctuation are very small.
I can recognize this as a bug? Maybe someone came across this issue and know any work-around?

Hi again,
I found quite robust workaround, however this is something I would avoid at any chance.
The trick is:
1. Starting with problematic Non-localized colon (or other [[:punct:]] mark):
2. Place Arabic Fatha (Unicode: 064E) in-between:
3. Change that character colour to Paper:
This can be easily done with GREP but placing extra character within the text isn't something I would like to do (as mentioned before), the reason is that text is checked against supplied Word Doc (using text verification software), hence more deviations will appear.
Could anyone do some test and confirm that this is a bug?

Sony Xperia Z experiences few usability issues after updating to latest software

Recently I upgraded my Sony Xperia Z phone (see snapshot for current upgraded system info)
After this upgarde I am facing few usability issues like ease of keyboard use
I lost all saved words from disctionary, also punctuations symbols bar at top of keyboard is missing (see image)
When I enter any wrong word and I want to delete/modify entered word.. now it deletes character by character instead of whole word (earlier behavior)
What is the solution to get that top symbols bar in keyboard?

Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Punctuation bar not working correctly

Just updated my S3 to 4.1.2 and noticed that when texting or emailing the punctuation bar doesn't show up after you hit the space bar. I have to hit backspace then hit the space bar again for the punctuation bar to show up.
I went into the keyboard settings and turned off the predictive text and unchecked Personalized data but no luck. Any one else having this issue?

Me too. Every time there's an upgrade they take away features I like. There used to be options under Predictive Text that let you personalize some of this, but now the only options are "personalized data" on/off and learning from different accounts. So for it seems like a downgrade, not an upgrade.

Appleshare - Server issue

I am having an issue that I have had a problem resolving. For reasons to numerous to get in to I'm using 9.2 in order to use Pro Tools for some basic audio production. The computer is attached through the in house network to an x-server running 10.3 . Because of some network failures this week we ended up changing all the IP parameters on the server. When I boot the computer now I get a dialogue box looking for the old server and since those parameters don't exist the computer won't boot. . Dumping the Applshare extension allows me to boot up the computer but it also means I can't access the server settings to change the address. Is there a workaround ? I'm not sure why when I boot up the computer wants to see the server before booting in 9.2. I'm not even sure where to look to disable the function which I guess is the way to go so I can reinstall the appleshare extension to change the setting unless there's another way to workaround the issue. The computer normally runs the most recent version of 10.4 (Tiger) I just use 9.2 for this one Pro Tools application

Server gurus recommend that you use only symbolic references to the Server, all across your local network. This quickly becomes more complicated, however, if your Server does not have an Internet-Visible Fully-Qualified Domain Name. The answer seems odd, but works great:
Make up your own unique Domain Name, and use it for all references involving the Server. And also enable Domain Name Service on your Server, and populate it with the made-up name or names. Have your DHCP Server pass out the Server Address as the Domain Name Server address, backed up by your ISP Domain Name Server addresses.
As long as you choose a Domain Name that is likely to remain unique, this presents no conflict. I use a rather clunky one for my home Server that has a lot of permissible punctuation and ending in .edu; I don't think anyone would ever choose it for a real Internet name.

PS CS5 Keyboard issue

Hi there! Wanna see if you guys can help me out...
Installed my versions of InDesign, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Photoshop today.
All of them worked out... except (there's always an exception, right?).
My keyboard does not function with Photoshop. I mean... it does: only shortcuts involving COMMAND, CONTROL or SHIFT.
Any of "normal" keys does not function at all!
I'm using a MacBook Pro 15" (later 2009).
Well... I don't know what to do. Tried update etc. Reinstall, install, reinstall. CS4 and CS3 worked fine.
Well... that's it. Any suggestions?

Solved: in part.
It's because of keyboard layout input.
I use U.S. International (portuguese punctuation - I'm brazilian). This is messing up with keyboard functioning on PS.
When I change from Internation to U.S. (default from US), it works. :s
But... again: it will me with ME, using keyboard on US default and not Internationl. =\
Anyone knows about this issue?
