Purchacing a s/h early 2008 MP - things to look out for?

Hi guys, Ive been offered a early 2008 MP at what i would consider to be a reasonable price. It is the 2 x 2.8 quad core model. Currently it has 6gb (not apple) ram & I'll be getting it with the original HD.
Not sure about any other options at this stage.
Just wondering if there are any specific things I need to be aware of with this model & to look out for. I have the serial number of the machine if that's relevant.
This would be my first MP - i have had macs for years but never MPs.
Any advice would be appreciated
cheers

  • Buying a used iMac G5, tips and things to look out for?

What tips could you guys give me on when looking for a used iMac G5? I like the 20" models specifically and it seems the models are all over 1.6GHz so the speeds are fine.
I currently own a G4 1.67 PowerBook and did a bit of reading up on that before I bought it, seeing what things to look out for what things turned faulty after a while and such. Such as the logic board and the 1 RAM slot going faulty on a few models, recalled batteries, which helped a lot in buying a used one.
I'm looking for a new desktop but can't afford to fork out over 1 grand for the new iMac's and the speed of my PowerBook is enough for my usual browsing and processing and few photos. So please don't bother telling me to buy a new one cos new is always best, I don't mind spending reasonably less and having a decent machine still - 1.67 15" PowerBook has proved well :P

Don't buy a new intel. buy a refurbished one from Apple. The PPC architecture is on its way out, few programs are being written for it, and most new applications are only for intel. I realize that even a refurb might cost a bit more than you planned to spend, but it will be worth it down the road.
Look in the [Apple Store|http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY], the choice changes daily, so just keep you eye open for the one you want and snap it up. And get Apple Care as well.
Let us know what you ended up with please,

  • Nexus 5K Config-Sync : Things to look out for

I've looked through the Cisco config guides for setting up Config sync and have successfully used it to configure dual-homed FEX's ports.
Is there anything I should be aware of that can cause issues?
I enabled config sync on an existing pair of 5Ks.  In other words, the 5Ks already have existing configurations on them before I enabled config sync.

    Hi,
According to the this link, you still have to configure the single port in switch profile. Config sync is used when your devices are connected to both 5ks, so you don't have configure the same thing twice.  If your device is going to be singly attached, there is no need for config sync.
    Guidelines and Limitations
The guidelines for configuration synchronization are as follows:
•You must configure the following interfaces in a switch profile:
    –Port-channel interfaces
–Ports that are not channel-group members
•You must configure all port-channel members outside the switch profile in configuration terminal mode.
•You must follow configurations in a specified order.
•Depending on the type of vPC topology (active/active or straight-through) and the type of configuration that is needed (port channel, nonport channel, FEX, QoS, and so on), you must use the switch profile mode or the configuration terminal mode. See the "At-A-Glance Configuration Modes" section to identify what mode is used for different types of configurations.
Configuration synchronization has the following configuration limitations:
•FCoE in vPC Topologies—FCoE configurations are not supported in switch profiles because configurations are typically different on peer switches. If you enable FCoE on a vPC peer switch, you must not configure the port channel in the switch profile.
    • Feature Commands—The feature feature name commands that enable a conditional feature are not supported in switch profiles. You should independently configure these commands on each peer switch in configuration terminal mode.
•Configuration Rollback and Conditional Features—With configuration synchronization, when a conditional feature is present in a checkpoint and not in the running configuration, a configuration rollback to that checkpoint fails. The workaround is to reconfigure the conditional feature ("feature xyz") before the configuration rollback is executed. This workaround also applies to the vpc domain command and the peer-keepalive command in vpc-domain mode.

    Hello
What are 2-3 things to watch out for when SAP is the source for a Data Warehouse (Informatica for ETL and Cognos for reporting)?
    Thanks
    G. Vijay

Going through some or all of this might help:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • Custom screen layouts - things to watch out for?

    Hi guys (Willam ),
We've had a designer customise a screen layout for us. We started with Desktop_Layout. The designer doesn't know Robohelp, and the documentation is sparse, to say the least.
I'm wondering what issues we may run in to and if there is anything we absolutely, definitely shouldn't do.
    For example,
@charset "utf-8", and * and html definitions have been added to the stylesheet
instead of embedding the toc book images in the Topic.slp, the images are coded in the css.
additional divs have been added (such as left-column, right-column, wrapper, content-wrapper)
    some divs have been removed
Anything for which there was not an obvious use has been removed, e.g. wTOCNodeCloseBook, div.wTopic
additional css has been added to style the content of the "topic holder" section. e.g. content p, content h1, content h2.
The Search results page is called "Topic", although it seems to have the correct icon in the Project Setup Pod.
    There are regular html tags inside the search results layout, e.g. <h2><?rh-msp-search-result-title class="wSearchResultTitle" ?></h2>, <p><?rh-msp-search-result-url class="wSearchURL" ?> </p>
That's just what I've been able to determine from a quick look. I'm really not sure what else may have been done.
I suppose I just want to know if we are setting ourselves up for a disaster somewhere.
    Thanks,
    Amber

    Thanks very much Wi.Es
The ToC bug you mention doesn't seem to be a problem for us - we're on 11.0.0 still.
Removed divs breaking the editor isn't a problem as I couldn't figure out how to use the editor anyway.
Currently we only support IE9 on desktop, so whether mobile or other browsers work isn't a consideration. I've mentioned it as a future concern, though and pointed out we'd probably have to redo the design from scratch.
I've asked for anything styling the topic content to be backed out and sent to me to put in the regular stylesheet. (I wanted to do that anyway.)
The 'Search results' layout being called 'Topic' - the designer is on 11.0.1. The generated output seems to work okay, so I'm planning to ignore it for now.
RoboWizard - not me. I'll be handballing to the opposition.

  • Planning on Buying Used 2008 Black Macbook on Craiglist, what should I watch out for?

I have one in mind already and hte owner say that the battery is shot.  but i have a 2008 macbook battery at home that I will replace that with.  What are some things that i can do to test the computer to make sure everyhting else is in working order.  What are some things to look out for?

DO NOT buy it unless it comes with the origional 2 discs that shipped with it.  Ask to use disc 2 to run the Apple Hardware Test before you purchase it.  Make sure EVERYTHING works.  Bring a cd/dvd with you to test the optical drive.  Open TextEdit or any word processing program they have on it and test EVERY key.  Also, check
mac2sell.net to make sure they are asking a reasonable price.  Overall, use common sense.

  • MacPro Early 2008 Mountain Lion can't remember monitor setting

My Mac Pro with two cinema displays and Mountain Lion starts with a "default" display setting. That means, display one and display two change after restarting the system. The OS is unable to save my settings!?

I'm largely in the same boat.  I'm running 10.6 and I bought both my computers on the cusp of the capability range apple listed.  I had no way of telling if they fell in the right category.  I looked for something that listed serial number ranges or some kind of app that would tell me if they would be compatible but found nothing that was definitive.  I even called Apple and they said it sounds like my computers will be fine. Saying things like "Mid/Late 2007 or newer" is hardly precise.  Needless to say I bought my Macbook Pro in mid 2007 and my Mac Pro in early 2008.  Both have turned out to not support 10.8.  I have no problem with that but would like to at least upgrade to 10.7.  10.6 is still available via phone sales but not 10.7.  Very fustrating.

  • MacBook Early 2008 Core 2 Duo/Penryn Series - Unable to upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion ( Looking For  A Fix )

I own a  MacBook "Early 2008 Core 2 Duo/Penryn" Series has Intel Processor (T8100 (2.1 GHz ) / T8300 (2.4 GHz)) 45 nm "Penryn" processors, 4 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) installed in pairs (two 02 GB modules), a 160.0 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive with "Sudden Motion Sensor" technology, an 8X dual-layer write DVD±RW/CD-RW SuperDrive, an Intel GMA X3100 integrated "graphics processor with 144 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory", and a 13.3" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution). It also includes AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "400" port, two USB 2.0 ports, optical digital audio in/out, and video out capabilities (mini-DVI) that supports an external display. These models also include the "scrolling Trackpad", built-in iSight video camera, "MagSafe" power connector, "flush against the bed " keyboard that does not touch the screen” and "no moving parts" magnetic latch that "catches without a catch".
Now to the adventure on this, the above model (stock) ships with a Operating System MAC OS X Leopard which was succeeded by MAC OS X Snow Leopard ( $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ) which was again upgraded to MAC OS X Lion ( $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ) and the latest one is MAC OS X Mountain Lion ( $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ).
Interesting part to all this technological babble is how APPLE INC forces you buy their product both hardware and software. Now, I have this old MacBook Early 2008 Model PC and I took it to the shop and I thought I would upgrade the software (OS and APPS) so I take it to the iStore ‘Rescue Centre’, as APPLE INC calls it world over, they say you will have to upgrade it version by version and each version would cost you a licence fee! SO the cost break up would be, I’m currently on MAC OS X Leopard to be updated by MAC OS X Snow Leopard ( cost $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ) which again to be upgraded MAC OS X Lion ( cost $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ) and then to latest one is MAC OS X Mountain Lion ( cost $19.99 / INR 1060.00 approx. ) which means I have to pay INR 3210.00 to upgrade the machine and I agree to pay for that and after two upgrades the third one(that is the latest version) was not compatible with my machine because of inferior/outdated hardware e unit and If I want the new operating system then I told to buy the new machine which costs between INR 90,000 to INR 1,40,000!!
    That … ***** !!!
So I’m here looking for somebody, anybody,  whether you would be able to help me with my MacBook which is early 2008 Core 2 Duo/Penryn Series (for exact specifications, see above) and I currently running Lion on it and wondering is there any way I can upgrade this to Mountain Lion?

Your early 2008 MacBook cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion. The reason is that Mountain Lion is entirely a 64 bit operating system, and cannot use any 32 bit components. Lion, while also 64 bit-based, can use some 32 bit components, and thus would work on all Core 2 Duo machines. This article has more details.
The center you went to was incorrect when they said you have to upgrade to each operating system. You need to be at Snow Leopard in order to access the App store to download Mountain Lion. You don't have to install Lion to get to Mountain Lion. See this Apple page on this.

  • Are 2 USB on front of 'early 2008 Pro' different circuit from ones on back?

I've got an app that needs to pull from 4 USB 2.0 cameras.
Does the 'Early 2008' Mac Pro use different circuits for the front and back USB connections?
If not, what's a reliable USB card that will work in the Mac Pro?
    Thanks!

It's for motion capture using 4 relatively inexpensive Logitech quickCam Pro 9000's.
    http://www.ipisoft.com/gallery.php
I'm not sure on the data rate yet, as will have to see what the optimum resolution is for the cameras and the software, which is in beta by a very small company in Moscow (small enough to where as they are exhibiting as SIGGRAPH now, there's no one in Moscow to reply to questions) - complicated by the hassle that I'll be running it on 64 bit Win7 64 in bootcamp (like I don't need one more hassle!)
Hopefully, it won't be anywhere near the full 480Mbps for a single camera.
I guess I'll just have to see when they arrive - probably heading down the path to frustration, oh well!

  • Yosemite update, MAC Book Pro early 2008 - Dead like. Overheated, Blank screen

Before 3 days I installed the latest updated for Yosemite. After the update, I make the laptop “sleep”. But I noticed that while sleeping the power LED indicator behaved in a strange way. Also the laptop was very hot and after couple of hours of sleep, It count be powered on.
I pull out the battery and power cable to cool id down. After that is was OK.
This same scenario was repeating last 2 day, always while the laptop was off/in-sleep.
Now no the 3th day, I noticed the battery is drain out. Now it is fully recharged, but the Laptop want to power on.
After powering on, the Led indicator is glowing like (half-intensity) and noting happens. The screen is blank.
Can someone advise me, what to do?
    Some notes:
    ================
-The device is MAC Book Pro early 2008
-The battery is New, used for about 3 weeks, without problems
-I tried and alternative (old, original) battery, but it is the same. Which makes me think the problem isn`t in battery.
-It happened right after the Yosemite update.
-While sleep it was very hot
    -LED indicator behaves strange
Thank you for any advice or tip.

Sorry for the spelling I am dyslex.....
    I had this happen to.
For some unknown resin my 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro overheated and witch killed it.  Requires a new Logic Board.
    Resions for this diagnoses:
    1) The laptop was running  Sarfia in Yosemite before before I closed the lid.
    2) I did not take note that when I had put the laptop down it had not gone to sleep.
    3) When after 3 hours shopping, I picked the laptop up it was VERY! hot on the bottom (much hotter than it has ever been) (and it was not the battery)
    4) Before I got it turned off by pressing the power button the fans where running but not fast.
    5) I let it cool down before trying to turn it back on.
    6) I tried all the reset operations
    7) The disk drives (HDD and Optical) spin up and did the diags.
    What I don't know is:
    1) Why did not the thearmail shutdown not kick in?
    2) Why when I picked it up and it was clearly VERY HOT! the fans where not running fast?
    3) If the OS was doing something (update while asleep)?
    4) If the OS was doing something how and why did it stop the fans spinning fast to keep the laptop cool.
Sadley I now have to shell out for a new Logic Board.

  • 15" early 2008 MacPro. Is this considered second generation?

I have a 15" Pro that on system preferences indicates early 2008. I am looking to craft a custom skin with a manufacturer who lists a 2008 option of the 15" Pro as "second generation unibody?" How do I know?

"Early" and "Late" can be confusing.  Does your computer have a display latch on the front edge, and the optical drive in front?  If so, it's a first generation.  If there is no latch, it is a second generation.

  • Remove OS X and install Windows 8 on early 2008 macbook

My early 2008 white macbook is on snow leopard which is seemingly no longer receiving important security updates. I was wondering if it would be possible to remove OS X and simply install Windows 8 on this particular machine. Will there be any driver problems? Is there anything in particular that I should look out for. I'd rather have a pure Windows installation rather than through bootcamp which doesn't seem to support the latest windows without a bit of hacking.

  • Early 2008 MBP 4,1 massively underperforming on fresh Leopard installation

I still love my Macbookpro 4,1 2.5 Ghz with 4GB ram, but when I think of how fast she used to be, <sigh>
One day she just stopped performing. I have reinstalled Leopard 10.5.6 and stillm any processor intensive task is met with insanely long "Estimated time to completion...." notes.
My score on the Geekbench2.1 test is about 648 (link here: http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/109501) whereas most MBP4,1 clock about 2400
As I said, I have reinstalled to OS from scratch, aside from slightly more peppy os x responses, anytime I try and export an mp3 or video its incredibly slow.
During bootup (take 45 seconds, not so bad) the screen flashes red for a moment and then multiple shades of blue before skipping the progress bar completely and jumping into my OS X desktop background.
I fear that it is a hardware problem - I am way over on the other side of the world so sending it in for repair is not really an option at the moment.
It works, but its operating at a fraction of its potential.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Surfacescan,
It sounds like your processor is throttling. Intel CPUs have built in thermal protection, where they slow themselves down when they get too hot. Have you heard of a Dashboard widget called iStat Pro? You can get it here: http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ This widget allows you to monitor temps and fan speeds under OS X. Download and install it, and check your temps and fan speeds. My Early 2008 idles at around 50 C for the CPU, and the fans at around 2000 RPMs. If your CPU temp gets too high it will slow down and quit running. If your fans are not running, or are running too slow it could also increase the temps.
TechTool Deluxe is really just another hardware test like the Apple Hardware test, it will probably not help you here. Something else you could try, is to use the BSD underpinnings of OS X and check what speed your CPU is really running at, open a Terminal and type this command and press Return
    sysctl hw.cpufrequency
This will display the number of times your CPU's processor ticks per second, based on the OS X kernel. If you get a number other than 2500000000 (which is 2.5 GHz spelled out), then your CPU is definitely throttling for some reason. Post back here with your results. Good luck!
    Rich S.
