Yes, taking a portable to a WiFi location would be a good option.
It might cost $5 an hour to use the service, but if they have a fast connection, it would be a lot faster than downloading with dial-up.
Some WiFi spots are free. Some coffee shops have free service for you to use while you relax with your coffee. So, perhaps the cost of a cup of coffee would get you your downloads for free over a fast connection.
Another option would be see if you could borrow a friends high-speed connection and hook your computer up to their service. If they have a home network setup, then it's usually just a matter of plugging in, and selecting DHCP in your network preferences.
Or, perhaps your employer has a fast connection that they don't mind you using. Some employers specifically allow employees to use their Internet service for personal uses provided it is on the employee's personal time - lunch breaks, before work, after work, etc. So, you might see about doing something like that to get your updates either with your computer, or onto a CD to take to your computer.

Purchasing January Update for 2 iPods on Same Account

My wife and I each have an iPod Touch which we sync on separate computers but share the same iTunes Account (so that we can sync each others purchases). I purchased the January update from my computer and installed on my iPod without issue, but I could not purchase the update again from my wife's computer; iTunes stated that I had already purchased the update.
I would like to avoid creating a new iTunes Account for my wife just so that the software update would work, since we are sharing our purchases. Is there another way to purchase and install the update from the same iTunes Account into separate iPods?

Are you listing the billing address for the card correctly? The address in the iTunes/MAS account must match the address on your bill exactly.

It sounds to me as though you are attempting to open a Pages 09 document with the Pages 08 application. If you do have Pages 09 on your computer, it may be that for some reason an existing Pages 08 application is invoked accidentally.

I've been having this problem for weeks and have found no solution to it. There are lots of other people with this issue too if you look back on the boards. I even e-mailed AND called Apple and have had no luck. I tried all the suggestions they gave me and all the ones I found on here- nothing worked. I even uninstalled and re-installed iTunes (boy was that a pain!) and no difference.
The weird part is that I have an old laptop that works and if I buy music with the laptop I can download it with my regular computer buy buying does not work on my regular computer. That tells me it's not a connection issue. I can't get to my account either.
I can't figure out why an issue that has kept so many people from purchasing a product has been ignored!

Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Try uninstalling iTunes 10.5 and installing iTunes 10.4. It has worked for others.

Try changing Settings > General > Restrictions > Require Password to 'immediately'

Apps and music are forever tied to the Apple ID under which they were purchased. If you don't want to continue to get that message, delete the apps and purchase them again with your new Apple ID.
