Purchased a 5T external, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), trying to drag and drop Time Machine. Tells me "The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled." How do I enable ownership? What is ownership?

Thanks!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

I used to drag and drop music loaded from CD's from the Recently Added folder to a Playlist on my iPods Classic. Can't see how to do this with new iTunes version. Probably need to sync somehow but when I checked on Sync it warned me it would wipe out my iPod contents. Don 't know why Apple makes something that used to be simple so difficult. Can't even figure out how to display both my library and iPod contents on same screen.

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

  • With OSX 10.8.5 The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled. how do i enable if i dont see the ignore ownership option?

With OSX 10.8.5, there is NO check box to ignore ownership on this volume. What can I do? I can't copy the Backups.backupdb files to a new bigger backup disk.

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

  • Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out   can't be selected. What went wrong?

    Must have done something wrong..
    1.  formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine.  Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
    2.  moved iPhoto library to new external disk
    3.  Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
    4.  Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected.  Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto.  A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry?  Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Then try select it again.

  • Formatting an External HD as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

I am having a challenge formatting my external hard drive in the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. From reading the forums I found out that I can not copy my iMovie events to the external HD unless it is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have a Sans Digital Towerstor external HD enclosure with 2 Seagate 1.5TB hard drives in it. I have been using this setup formatted as FAT with no issues. That is until I started running out of HD space on my 24" iMac. After trying unsuccessfully yo copy my iMovie events to the external HD I found out that it was formatted incorrectly. I have since made copies of all my information and set the external hard drives to a Raid 0 configuration so I can format both drives.
I tried many times to format my external HD's in the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with no success. I kept receiving the error "Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed." I read some additional articles that suggested I try the Partition tab as opposed to the Erase tab in the Disk Utility. I was able to successfully format the drives as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Since this external drive is meant as a redundant backup I changed the Sans Digital Towerstor to a Raid 1 configuration so there is a mirror image of one of the drives. It would not recognize the drive after I set it back to Raid 1 so I tried to repartition the main drive again using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I received the same error as I did before..."Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed."
I need to have the drives in the Towerstor as a mirror backup of each other as I have a lot of important information. Any adivec you can give on how to partition these drives as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in a Raid 1 configuration would be most appreciated.
Thank you for you time and input.

Thank you for your response. I was able to successfully format the drives Extended journaled when they were out of the raid configuration. I was not able to format as Extended (not journaled) in the Raid configuration.

So i tried upgrading my hard drive to a new hitachi HD and when i tried using the mac osx dvd it doesn't find the hard drive in the destination page. i formatted it to mac os extended journaled with 1 partition and nothing i'm stuck.... here is a picture of the disk utility page i took a screenshot of.... please help

"i tried upgrading my hard drive to a new hitachi HD"
Your havnt said what your trying to do so your posts are very confusing
with this new drive do you want to:
install the operating system on the new drive
format the drive to use it as storage
    create a standby bootable drive
    something else entirely
Your screen shots show you have an internel drive and three other drives
The drive you have erased is an external USB connected drive - youv erased and partitioned the drive and it shows it is working OK
what do you want to do now?
if the idea is to replace your original systen drive with this new drive youv bought the wrong kind of drive it should have been an internal drive
but you need to explain wahat as the drive shows it functioning correctly

I am now using 10.6.8.  Downloaded Maverick but cannot update OS on HD because get message the disk is not formatted as Mac OS extended(journaled).  Tried to use Disk Utility as per instruction but cannot complete operation.

    Barney-15E:
The partition method worked after some trepidation.  I got the spinning beach ball after partitioning and couldn't go further till I named the second partition.  That may have done it.  Right now, things seem to be working o.k.  I'm updating a current iPhoto and will have to get a MS Word program that will function on the current OS and a current  Quicken.
If necessary, can start up from the 10.6.8 system which I downloaded to an external HD before updating.  I can always fall back on that.  Also, I hope I don't get too many disconnects.  Thank you for your help.

  • How much does it cost to replace a 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen display on a mac os extended journaled 2008 silver backing and black inner lip

how much does it cost to replace a 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen display on a mac os extended journaled 2008 silver backing and black inner lip

A lot depends on if you are having Apple do the replacement or an authorized repair or another source.  The Apple prices seem to run in the neighborhood of $500, some have posted prices as low as $200 from un-authorized sources.
Check with an Apple store or authorized service first so you have a reference point...and be sure to take into consideration the confidence you feel in the repair facility, you often get what you pay for.

    Hi Poonam26c,
If you do not have a local copy of a song which you have purchased (i.e. it is available via iTunes in the Cloud), you may need to redownload it before you can transfer it to your device. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Cant drag files to WD HD - it is formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)??

    Hi
I have my WD Hardrive formatted to my mac book air and have transfered files in the past with no problem- is it formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so I am not sure where I am going wrong considering its always been fine in the past..
There is plenty of space left on the HD?
I get a circle with a cross going through it over the files I am trying to drag.
My laptop is almost at capacity memory wise and I really need to offload some things to my HD ASAP!
    Thanks

I meet all those requirements.  core 2 duo and latest snow leopard.  I have a late 2006 mac book.  Maybe that's why.  Its telling me that my hard drive isn't formatted correctly but it is formatted as they ask.  It's not the hard drive that came with the macbook though.

I have the same problem.   It's showing old podcasts that are available for download and I already watched and I don't want to see them again and I don't want them listed in my iTunes.  This latest upgrade is a piece of junk so far.   It destroyed my itunes podcast listing on my Windows Machine.   I have no intentions of upgrading to iOS7 or my Mac until I hear that things are fixed.

If  you backed up the phone when the video was still on it, restoring the backup will get it back.  However, anything new on the phone since the backup will be deleted.
