Purchased Books in iBooks?

Is it possible yet to delete -permanently- a book from the list of "Purchased Books" on an iPad 2?

Via your computer's Tunes - click on the HT4919 link in my above post.
If your iPad is on iOS 7 you might need to log out and back into your account on it after hiding them for them to be hidden in Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app - I've been needing to that after hiding apps (though I haven't hid any for a couple of weeks).

While that's an understandable desire, the publishers don't want you buying a book and sharing it with multiple individuals who others would buy it. The inability to "share" a book or pass it on to a friend or relative when you're done is one of the drawbacks of ebooks vs traditional print ... And consider that when you pass on a real book to your wife, presumably you're not reading it at the same time. :-)
Some other ebooks do allow limited (time-constrained) sharing of books - Barnes & Noble, for one, I believe - and they have an app for the iPad that would allow you to read books on it.

I Just figured this out. I had downloaded a bunch of books on my iPhone and had the greyed-out issue on my iPad with sync collections enabled. Had tried all the same fixes as indicated in this thread and others without success. What worked was restarting my iPad (this may not be a necessary stage) and searching for the titles that were stuck In the iBooks store. As expected each showed an 'in progress' download button. I was finally able to tap this to stop the (non-existent) download, which hadn't been possible within 'My Books' or the 'Purchased' tab on the store. When I tapped the button briefly jumped to 'Read' then changed to the standard iCloud download button for a previous purchase. Tapping this successfully initiated the download, which then synced into the right collection in my library.

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your purchased books in iBooks. For this issue, I recommend signing out and back into the iTunes Store on your iPad:
Changing your Apple ID account
Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores, then tap the Apple ID signed in.
Sign out of the current Apple ID account and then sign in with another account or create a new Apple ID.
The last step states to sign in with another account, but for the situation you described, I recommend just signing in with your same Apple ID.

If the issue persists after signing out and back in, I recommend quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPad:
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.

If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the iTunes Store app, I recommend restarting your phone and then resetting if it's still not working:
Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.

I can't open a purchased book in my iBook! Both on my iPad and iPhone. There's the iCloud icon and when I select it, it looks like it's going to open, but nothing! Help!

The Cloud icon means it needs to be downloaded. You could try a hard reset ie hold the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears (ignore the red slider).

Why can I download samples, but am unable to purchase books from ibooks on my ipad?

I recently encountered problems downloading and shopping for books at ibooks. I am able to download samples of books, but when I attempt to purchase them, I am unable to. Quit the iBooks app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logou appears and let go of the button.
Or try deleting the book and download it again. You can download it again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID.
If that doesn't work either, sometimes deleting the iBooks app and reinstalling it may work. But art with the first two suggestions.

Unable to open purchased books in ibook

I can only open ibooks on my ipad that are listed on my bookshelf . However, if I select the library's Purchased Catagory and try to open one of the many books that I have purchased, they will not open. I only get a description of the book. All of the books in my purchased section show to have been downloaded and many of them were recently updated. But, like I said, none of them will open when clicked on. If they have to be listed on my bookshelf, how do I move them there? I have had access to many of them before since my last IOS update, but am unable access them now.

The Purchased tab is part of the store, tapping on them there will only show your their description page from the store. If a book is not currently only on your bookshelf then it should have a cloud icon against it in the Purchased tab, tapping on that should download it to the bookshelf so that you can open and read them.
Not using iCloud won't stop them showing in the Purchased tab for redownloading and/or viewing their descriptions. Your purchases are automatically kept in the cloud for you to be able to redownload them (though you should also be taking your own backup copy of them), that can't be changed - they will stop showing for redownloading if you move countries, or if the rights-holder removes them from your country's store, or depending upon the type of item and your country (e.g. audiobooks and tones are one-time only downloads so won't show for redownloading ; films, music, TV programmes can't be redownloaded in all countries).

Can't open purchased book in iBook app

I downloaded an iBook and when I open it and look at titles it is not there. When I go to purchased it shows that the book is downloaded but it doesn't give me an option to open it. I have reset my phone and deleted and redownloaded the app and it isn't working.

It says requirements are an iOS device with iBooks 1.3.1 or later and iOS 4.3.3 or later. I have a 4s with the latest software update (7.0.4) and plenty of capacity. Thanks for your help though! Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

I had this problem and fixed it by deleting the iBooks app from my iPad. When I reinstalled it all my previous purchases downloaded, including the two 'stuck' books. Just make sure to backup any PDFs or non-iBooks that you have so you can reinstall them from your backup location.
