Purchased movies on Apple TV not showing in iTunes

I have video (purchased TV shows and video made in iMove) and purchased movies on an Apple TV (gen 1). In iTunes, I can see the audio recordings and both purchase and home made video but NOT the purchased movies. I really hate to purchase movies and place it on a hard drive I cannot back up.
1) Why can I not see the purchased movies?
2) Is there a way to back up the hard drive on Apple TV other than through iTunes?

Because they're not in the iTunes library. Control-click the Apple TV in iTunes and choose Transfer Purchases.

If a movie is removed from the iTunes store then yes you would lose it.
I think you misunderstand what icloud is, there is no 'raw contents'.
iCloud allows for reloading of past purchases (it is simply accessing what is on the storefront), syncing contents between devices and backup of mobile data. It is different from say something like dropbox.

Purchased Movies (with Extras) will not Play in iTunes

So I have OS 10.7.4 and the most current version of iTunes. Lately, my purchased movies will not play in iTunes. When I double click on them, it goes to play them, but just freezes on a black screen as if paused. When I hit play, it flashes immediately back to pause. The chapters are all there (with the corresponding clip from that chapter of the movie). Ironically, these play fine on our aTV and iDevices where chapters/extras aren't used--this is only a problem on the computer playing through iTunes. The actual files are present and, as mentioned, they sync just fine to the iPads, etc. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Sometimes it would be nice to play them on the computer itself.
Yes the computer is authorized (and I deauthorized then reauthorized it). I've "Consolidated Library" and "Checked for Available Downloads". Also non iTunes purchased movies (those from DVD's I own) ripped in Handbrake work just fine and play. Also OLDER purchases without the Chapter screen play just fine.

I have had this problem before. I guess I need to stop buying movies on my Apple TV. After I bought a movie on my Apple TV, I wanted to put it on my Macbook Pro to take with me. It is not in my movie folder. I have tried checking for available downloads in the store tab and nothing is found. I tired logging out and back in and still nothing, Any ideas? Like I said, I had this problem once before, but I can't remember what I did to remedy it.

Were all the purchases made using the same Apple ID? iTunes purchases are shared cross device via their servers. Home Sharing will only work if the media is on your computer and the ATV is viewing it, it won't work the other way round. If it was a movie, first, check the settings in the ATV and your iPad to ensure the Apple IDs match. Then, open the videos app on your iPad (blue clapper board), the movies should be there, if not, go to the Store by tapping it in the top left of the app. Then, along the bottom, go to 'Purchased', and tap either Movies/Music/TV Programmes from along the top, depending on what you're looking for. They should be there. If they're not, you'll want to contact iTunes Support as it will be an issue with your account. Thanks!

From Apple TV menu, I used to click on "Computer" and choose my laptop and I could watch TV, Movies, Photos, Music, whatever....
but now the "Computer" button incorrectly tells me that Home Sharing is turned off (which it isn't) and I can't find my purchased movies anywhere. Plus, it appears that I can't listen to music without iTunes Match which costs $25 a year... any advice out there?

I don't believe Apple is currently listing purchased movie content, like they do with TV episodes because of licensing restrictions. Big Movies views that as a streaming service, and not purchased content, so it is licensed differently.
As to your Home Sharing, there has been no change there. You can still Home Share your videos, photos, music from your computer that has Home Sharing turned on. Keep in mind iTunes needs to be running on that computer at the same time.
Also, one in awhile my computer is on, but it does not show under Home Sharing on Apple TV. When this happens, I do a hard boot (unplug from power and plug back in) of the Apple TV, and also restart my computer. Something happens once in awhile that it loses that connection. I haven't troubleshooted more than just doing a reboot. Obviously there is a root cause, but it doesn't happen to me enough to worry about tracking it down.

A movie rented on an iPhone can only be viewed on an iPhone. If you want to view on TV you need to rent directly on ATV or via computer (and stream using home-sharing)

1st gen apple tv not showing all movies synced from iTunes.

I have 30 movies in iTunes library that I synced to my 1st gen Apple TV. I have viewed several of these movies in the past on the Apple TV but some are not coming up in the listings anymore. You can also got to movies and select purchased and if it comes up cannot connect to server go to settings and scroll down to restart and it should work. That's what I did and it showed my purchased movies and I don't have my Apple TV paired with a computer. Just using iCloud. But you also can pair your computer but its not necessary to watch purchased movies you have bought through iTunes. Hope this helps.

So what is meant here is spend more money - wrong answer.
For that reason most people prefer to buy movies on DVD. They are easily shared, foolproof, and super easy to use. I love Apple TV and iTunes for music and TV shows, but I would never purchase a movie that was not on an optical disc.
When I head out-of-town I can grab a couple of DVDs to watch on my new MacBook Pro during the flight. Easy and uncomplicated.
DVDs offer another advantage. You can watch your movie without depending upon a complicated and delicate infrastructure. Also, movies are frequently censored for political correctness (Star Wars is a recent example). Despite public pressure for a release, the Disney movie “Song of the South” remains banned. Even cartoons like Johnny Quest are now censored. Only people who purchased physical copies years ago have them as they were originally produced.
When you possess a physical copy of the movie the PC patrol can't mess with it.

upgraded apple tv to lastest version and now i cannot access my purchased movies on apple tv

I have as of last evening (02/28/2013) successfully rented via a download timestamp of 30 days, it shows up in my rental movie folder, I can see it on my system, I can see it in my Apple TV (2nd gen) as a selection, I select to play and I'm told I have to authorize. After reading suggestions, doing as examples fortold, I cannot still play my rental.
1. Downloaded rented
2.Apple TV is setup per manual
3. I can play stream netflix, play trailers, my music library and everything else
4. I still cannot play my rental.
5. I'm told I have to authroize, I've done all the above.
6. reset, restart, update, etc.,
Clearly there is an issue on the otherside expect taking my payment.
I do not know what else to do. I love Apple and the products and the sotware, this is one of my 1st instances of exerpeicing an issue I couldn't resolve via help from our Apple community. Why Doesnt Apple jsut allow streaming??? DOES Anyone have a new suggestion for me? Thank you

Purchased movies in Apple TV.

I got access to my purchased movies in Apple TV, but my question is that they are two movies that don't show up, and they are HD, but can't graps the concept of them missing from my purchased list. All my tv shows and my music and music videos turn up but I have seen before that some movies purchased from itunes go missing from my library but turn up if I redownload them from the Itunes store....
Any suggestions on how to fix this or is it a glitch.

Purchases in the cloud work pretty well, but items are not always guaranteed to be available there forever.
I bought a couple of iTunes LP albums a few years ago - one of those is no longer available.
Same goes for movies and TV Shows which if removed from sale in the store can disappear from the cloud.
There were complaint some months ago when Disney removed titles from teh store/cloud though cloud access was restored later.
If you can redownload your items to iTunes I suspect unavailability in the cloud on AppleTV is a glitchand they may turn up as part of a search in the movie section - I would contact iTunes Store support.

You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

The music I have purchased on my IPod is not showing up on my Itunes account on my computer, I went to the itunes store on my computer and went to see if I could download a song i previously purchased, but it was going to have me pay again. I have about a hundred songs missing on my computers itunes. It won't let me sync my ipod to it anymore and when I tried to update the software it wouldn't let me. I am completely at a standstill with this.

Then you're doing something wrong. Are you signed in with the same Apple ID on the computer that the content was purchased with?
Did you check the purchase history?
