Purchased music won't transfer to up-to-date iPod

- I have cross-posted this from the iPod forum as I'm not sure if it's an iTunes Store or an iPod issues. The original posting is at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=491427&tstart=0
I have a *brand new* (thanks, Apple Care) 20gb colour screen iPod, running up-to-date firmware (checked using the 06-03-23 updater), and an iBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 with iTunes 6.0.4 - and yet...
when I try to copy iTunes Store purchased music accross to my iPod I get the error message "Some of the songs in the iTunes music library were not copied to [your iPod] because your iPod software is too old. Go to www.apple.com/ipod to get the latest iPod software."
Can anyone help solve the problem?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iTunes 6.0.4

Do you use the most current release of QuickTime?
yes - 7.1.0
Will those tracks play through iTunes iTself?
Yes - they will also play very happily when copied onto my old desktop iMac (running OS 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.2, and QT 7.0.4) - and I have just discovered they will even copy from the desktop to the iPod. It's a tedious workaround thought to have to copy all the music from the laptop to the desktop to the iPod.
Did you try the 5Rs http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/ ?
Yes, several times. (In fact, the last time I tried to solve this problem I got as far as Restore, and my iPod crashed irreprably - the one I have now, fresh out of the packet, is the warranty replacement).
However, I have just tried again - and this time have hit trouble at "Re-install".
I trashed the previous installation of iTunes 6.0.4 - and, for thoroughness, the associated preference files and music library - then emptied the trash, restarted and downloaded the 6.0.4 installer again. Result? I have no iTunes any more, because the installer says that installation is "disabled" on my computer.
Any advice on what to do next?

Some of my newly purchased music won't sync, even though I converted it to the proper format.

Music purchased from the iTunes Store does not need to be converted before being used on iPods.  Music from most other sources, such as Amazon, is in MP3 format and does not need to be converted.  So, can you explain "even though I converted it to the proper format"?

  • ITunes Purchased Music Won't Play

OK, I must be doing something wrong. I sync my iPhone and it gets all the music I had selected. But I've discovered a number of songs that won't play...and these just happen to be iTunes purchased music! My regular mp3's will play.
Now I know the purchased songs work because they play on my Nano and Shuffle2. The purchased songs also play in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
And a second question...I've downloaded a few TV shows which play fine in iTunes but do not play on the iPhone. Is there a "trick" to playing my purchased music and video on the iPhone?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi!
I discovered that my purchase music and videos stopped playing when I went into a Tully's coffee shop and attempted to access their Wi-fi network. I don't know if this was the cause of me losing access to my purchase music, but this is when the problems started. When I got home today I unloaded all the music playlists off of my iphone using itunes, and then I added them back in and re-synced. This seem to do the trick. I can now listen to all of my purchased music and watch my purchased videos. Give it a try. I hope that we don't have to do this sort of thing all the time.

  • Some purchased items won't transfer from iPod to new computer

I purchased a new iMac from the Apple Store online to replace an old iMac G4. I can't get anything to migrate using Migration Assistant. I can't get the old G4 to start as a target drive. I've tried using an ethernet cable in addition to firewire. I get indications the two computers are connected, but neither can see the other's drive. I've tried mounting the drive from the G4 to the new iMac using a temporary drive box with a USB connection. That doesn't work. Anyway, that's really not what I'm asking about here.
I've also tried backing up my entire iTunes library on the old G4 to DVD. Although I burned 13 fricking blank DVDs, and all indications were that the backup was successful, when I tried to restore to the new iMac, about half of my library didn't go across. I can't find any reason why some things went and others did not.
So now, I figured that if I could simply transfer the 591 items I've purchased over the years from iTunes, from my iPod to the new iMac, I'd be a happy man. I know it's a pain in the butt, but I can always get out my CDs and add them again to the iTunes library on the new iMac.
I authorized the new iMac to play the items I've purchased on iTunes. The new iMac and the old G4 are the only two computers I have authorized to play the purchased music.
Now, the problem is that when I try to transfer my purchased items from my iPod to the iTunes library on the new computer, I get a dialogue box that states:
"Some of the purchased items on the iPod "***'s iPod", including "Symphony No. 41 in C, "Jupiter" K. 551: II. Andante Cantibile", could not be transferred to your iTunes library because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."
***!! Notice that it said "purchased itemS?" There are another 99 purchased songs that can't be transferred because I'm not authorized to play them. I paid for them! Yet the other 491 purchased songs are okay? None of this makes any sense to me. I've done everything I know to do.
I purchased an Apple Care warranty for the new iMac. I'm just wondering if I take the old G4 and the new iMac to my local Apple Store, if they will migrate this stuff over for me for free. I love Macs, and I can't believe this has become so difficult.
If anyone has any ideas on what I'm doing incorrectly or how I can make this transfer work of just my music purchased from iTunes, I would be most grateful.

    bump . . .
I'm seeing that there is a bug with iTunes 8 regarding authorization. Do you think this is the source of my problem? Thanks.

  • Purchased Music Won't Play!!

This is my SECOND 60gb Black 5th Gen iPod.... and it was working swell until tonight. I had just finished purchasing another album off ITunes, and put those songs on my Ipod, which I have done many times in the last month, with no problem. Now, however, my Ipod won't play ANY songs that I have purchased, either recently or in the past. My non-purchased (.mp3 format basically) play fine. The weird thing is, I can still play the purchased format through my Powerbook when its reading off the iPod. However ITunes asks me every time I connect the iPod to "name it" as if it were new. Also, I have meticulously organized all my music into Smart Playlists. They appear on the iPod, but NOT in iTunes....what happened and what do I do!??!!? Sorry if this is a bit too much... I am just not hoping to hear ANOTHER "format" because there is a lot of purchased music from the past and older computers I don't have anymore... oye

(Don't buy Toast just to get an external burner working - try Patchburn from http://www.patchburn.de
This driver will make (nearly) any burner iTunes compatible.)
btw. Toast won't work if using Tiger for burning puchased music nor if using QT 7
If your iTunes burned CD only plays on your computer:
#1 make sure that iTunes burning Preferences are set to AudioCD
#2 make sure not to use CD-RW media

  • Updated to 2.0, now my purchased music won't play

I can't seem to do a search since the search function for some reason has gone from the forums.
I'd like to know if anyone has been able to get their purchased music to play. It will play fine on the computer but not on the iPod Touch. Information is greyed out and the songs are unresponsive to the iPod controls.
    Anyone else have this happen?
    Griff

Actually I got it solved by re-synching my iPod Touch in iTunes. The second time, my authorization seems to have stuck and my purchased music now plays.

I can't access AppleTV screen. My "purchased music" pops up on the iPad screen and I can't clear it to access the AppleTV menu using the Remote app.

Did you already restart/ reboot your Wi-Fi router?
Also execute "Forget this Network" on your iPad.
Once your router has restarted, try to connect again.

  • Purchased Music won't play on Re-installed iTunes

    O.K. here is what happened
    1. My iMac was out of space for storing my music library and was giving me warnings etc.
    2. I purchased an external hard drive to store all the music files on while still playing them through the iTunes on the older(10.2.8)iMac.
    3. On my own, I attempted to do this but ended up deleting the iTunes on the iMac with all the music. The music folders were still safe however.
    4. With the help of a technical minded friend, we managed to successfully do what I had intended, which was to move the music the the ex. hard drive and reopen in iTunes.
    5. Now that that is all working I have one BIG problem left...
It will not play any purchased songs from either the iMac's original iTunes or the tracks that I used my zip drive to move from my PC to the original iTunes.
The message reads that I am "unauthorized" to play these tracks-which still work on the PC! I type my password to authorize and it takes me to an "Upgrade now" page for iTunes 7.2 which I am unable to get because of the computers old operating system...
The purchased music was working on the same iTunes as before (4.7.1) previous to when I deleted and reinstalled the same version.
So I am wondering if there is a way around this to get the music working again. It doesn't even show on my iPod now.
When I look for places to authorize it again or see how many computers are, in fact, authorized- it says 4 are authorized but there is only "Deauthorize Computer" but no "Authorize" to be found.
Help would be muuuuuuuuuch appreciated-the guy from 1-800-APPLE-CARE said I have to buy a whole new operating system. I just think there is a way to do this without buying Tiger for nearly $200...it was working fine on what I have before this whole ordeal!!!
    Arg.
Well thanks for reading and I hope somebody can help me!
    Thanks again

Probably you have had a problem with loading the songs from iTunes onto your iPod. Also, explain a little more: does your iPod play no songs correctly? And how many songs do you have on iTunes, and how many on both iPods?
How long have you had iTunes, and do you know how to load iTunes items correctly onto an iPod? I think we need to get a little more specific here.
    I'd like to help, though.

  • Purchased music won't play on ipod!  Help!

    Hi,
I've posted this before, but not found a good response that solves the problem. Thought I'd try again - any help would be appreciated.
My original ipod died just b/4 the warranty expired, so I got a new one from the apple store. Now, my ipod will not always play music I've purchased from the itunes store. There are two "fixes" I've found for this. The first is to plug my ipod into my computer and let it update. This seems to restore the files (?) but only works for a day or two, then the ipod skips right over the purchased files. The song file info (artist, song title, album, etc...) pops up on the screen for a second or two, but then goes right to the next file.
A better fix was to drag the "itunes music" folder from the finder into the library view of itunes on my desktop. This seemed to be a better "update" and worked for several months, but I recently noticed that once again, my ipod is simply skipping over any purchased music.
As you can imagine, this is quite frustrating, and also, since I've purchased a fair amount of music from itunes that I can't reliably listen to, very expensive!
I've noticed that in my "itunes music" folder in the finder of my computer any purchased music has the file extension ".m4p" whereas any music that I have ripped from a CD that I already owned has the file extension ".m4a". Is it possible that this has something to do with it?
My guess is that because I'm on my second ipod, the songs are protected somehow so that they "lock" after a certain amount of time if the file doesn't recognize the ipod device? Does this make sense? Does apple protect these files so that you can't permanently share them with other peoples' ipods? That would seem to be a fair thing, but I can't listen to them on my own ipod! I've been to the local apple store several times, and they have no idea what's going on.
I have a mac G4, and a 5th gen ipod (20G). All the software updates are current.
Again, any help would be appreciated.

"oh, and i also downloaded the free song of the week to see if downloading something new would help it out. nope."
Into a new user account with a separate iTunes library? That's the idea.
    1. Deauthorize the computer.
    2. Create a new user in the system.
    3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
    4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
    5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
    6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

  • Purchased music won't play on ipod 5g 60gb - need help!

    hello everyone,
i've been looking for help all over the internet for hours and hours, and i have yet to find an answer. i wrote the whole sequence of events down so everyone will know which troubleshooting steps i have already gone through.
i have an ipod video, 5g, 60gb that i got in december. it's been great, up until i needed to upgrade my operating system to windows xp pro (from xp home edition). i backed up everything onto dvds, proceeded to install the new os (even gave my music it's own partition, now it feels all special and lovely and whatnot ), and reloaded itunes, got my music back on like before. then, i proceeded to install my ipod software, got the latest updates (version 1.1.1 for ipod video), and this is where i ran into problems.
prior to using itunes to install my music, i noticed a few glitches with version 1.1.1 of the ipod updater. some of my music files would show the correct artwork when normally playing the music, but if i cycled through to the larger picture of the album artwork, almost every item on my ipod showed a picture of a podcast i am subscribed to. seeing i've spent hours putting in correct artwork for thousands of songs, this irked me.
after getting all my music straight on my computer and made any changes i needed to make, i hooked my ipod up and updated with itunes. due to the new installation of windows, it had to wipe everything, and then redownload everything to my ipod.
i then noticed that not only my artwork was still screwy, but my purchased music didn't play any longer either. all of the purchased songs and videos skip through after about a couple seconds, but i did notice it did increase my play counts upon further updates. the songs play fine on my computer, no issues. and i have tried the deauthorize/reauthorize process as well, with no success.
after researching this issue a bit, i decided to follow the 5 r's. even the "restore" r, and then reloaded everything back on my ipod. now, my artwork is back like normal, which i am happy about. however, purchased music still has the same behavior. even gave the deauthorize/reauthorize process another whirl. while i could easily burn those songs to a cd and then rip them to mp3 to make them play, this still wouldn't fix my purchased video issues, leaving me right back at square one.
oh, and i also downloaded the free song of the week to see if downloading something new would help it out. nope.
i also downloaded anapod explorer to see if that would give any light onto the situation. it shows the purchased files are on my ipod, but when i disconnect from the program, it tells me "you must download a file from iTMS in order to play protected music," a step which i had already done with the free song of the week.
i'm just wondering if i should try downgrading my ipod firmware, if anyone has had the same problems, or if anyone could offer any helpful advice? i would greatly appreciate it!

  • Non-purchased music won't go to my iPhone

This problem started two days ago, before that, I have never had this problem. I had a mix of purchased and non-purchased music on my iPhone 5c and two days ago, all of my non-purchased music got deleted. When I went to "On My Device" and clicked on the non-purchased songs, this came up.
I deleted all of the non-purchased songs, re-downloaded some of them, and tried to put them back on again. Midway through doing that, the same thing appeared next to all of the downloaded songs. I don't know what is causing this. I have only had my iPhone for a little over a month and this has never happened until now, all of my songs were playing perfectly fine. Is there any way that I can get my non-purchased songs to stay on my iPhone? When I try to put them back on, they stay on the iPhone for maybe 10 minutes and get deleted. The only music that remains is music that I have purchased from iTunes.

Someone please help!! Nothing is working. I even put the songs in my iTunes Media folder and tried to put them on my iPhone again but it still didn't work. Is there a solution to this problem?

  • TS4124 I have around 1000 songs manually downloaded from my CD's to iTunes in my iPhone before an operating system change on my computer deleted my iTunes and had to create a new one.  The music won't transfer to my new iTunes!  How do I get it back?

I can't figure out how to get my music back onto a new iTunes from my iPhone.  I had to replace my iTunes after an update to my operating system on my MacBook Pro was reversed (found Mountain Lion to be incompatible with many existing programs and couldn't use it).  I had alraedy manually loaded about a 1,000 songs from my CD's and now no matter what I've tried I can't get them back onto my new iTunes!  How can I fix this without re-loading all of these songs?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

  • TS1420 my itune music won't transfer to my ipod classic its been fully restored and the music still won't transfer over it locks up halfway in between the transfer

can someone please help me with this. I got a fully restored iPod Classic I was able to transfer only 211 song that I purchased from iTunes on to my iPod I have successfully transfer music from my computer into iTunes but when I go to transfer that music to my ipod it starts to transfer and then it locks up on the computer..my iTunes is up to date and so is the iPod I have restarted my computer and resync several times I've dealt with this issue all day and I'm still struggling and not having no luck

Leaving an iPod in a car is a bad idea, aside from the theft potential. The extremes of heat and cold that a car can face can damage the internal hard disk. Remember, an iPod classic is not like the newer devices: it is like your older desktop computer with a physically spinning hard disk, with reading heads floating microns above the disk. Heat and cold creates expansion and changes tolerances.
I'd suggest bringing the iPod inside, and leaving it inside for at least 24 hours to let it come to temperature equilibrium. Try that first.
Your response didn't address the other side of the equation: the iTunes you sync to. Have you updated iTunes recently or any other component? Install any drivers? Change the port where you plug in the iPod? Install any new security software, such as antivirus, that wasn't present when it was last able to synch?
