Purchased new IMAC .... planning to give my old one to another user.  What do I need to do?

I've purchased a new IMAC and plan to give my old IMAC away to another family member.  After I transfer my settings, files and documents from the old to the new IMAC, what do I need to do to scrub the machine and give it to a new user?

This is preparing one for sale but the principle is the same.

In 2008, 2009, 2010, I bought numerous seasons of a lot of TV seasons. I backed them up on a WD Passport, then bought a new iMac and had my old one totally cleaned and re-installed the OS. Is there a way to recoup these purchases! I probably have close to $3000 invested in these.

    Thank you!
I can't tell you how terrified I was when deleting the superfluous account...but it went just swimmingly!

The simplest way, is to erase the drive and reinstall the OS X.

Other than that, you will have to trash all your User files, delete all the photos from within iPhoto and then empty the trash.

  • I bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I do not have my installation disk.  How do I erase all my information?

I recently bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I read up on how to erase my information before handing it over to my brother but they process included having my installation disk.  I do not have that disk.  I need to erase my information and upgrade the computer.

"Tiger Tiger burning bright ..." (sorry for the poetic diversion ...)
You can call Apple Customer Support, give them the serial number of the unit and pay $16 per disk to get new copies.  But they may not re-burn Tiger anymore.
If that is the case, you have to consider buying Tiger disks from an online store, or move up in the cat family.
Leopard disks only require PPC processors, and run $180 or so.  Apple *may* have some Leopard in stock if you call them.  Else you go online.
If the sysem has Intel processor, you can jump up to Snow Leopard, which is $29 in the Apple Online Store.

  • Plan to give my old Nano to a PC non-iTunes owner, but

I plan to buy a new Nano and give my old one to a friend who has a PC.  I doubt he wants to upload iTunes because we like the same music, so then how can he charge the Nano's battery?  What will happen if he just connects with the USB cord (or whatever it's called) to his PC?  Will that charge it?  Thanks.
PS - I got my Nano in 2007 or 2008 and it came with an outlet wall charger, do the new 2014 ones come with those still?  If they do, then I'll just give my old charger to my friend.  Thanks if anyone can help.

They do not come with a charger. Have your friend buy a wall charger.

  • I ran out of space on my time machine  because I bought a new I MAC to replace the old one.  So I copied the old one on the new one  and in addition to that I own a macbook.  So what should I do erase the old IMAC on my  Time capsule ? Shall I reset it?

Go to the airport utility and erase the TC disk.. a quick erase is fine and takes less than 1min usually.
A one pass erase takes several hours depending on how big the hard disk is.. but is somewhat safer in that it tests the drive condition. I normally don't bother for a TM backup.
When you start over you should be able to fit both backups on the TC.. assuming the disk is 2x larger at least than the space used on both the MB and the iMac.
If not you can also add a USB drive to the TC, and use that for one of the computers.
The slowest one is best.. as USB is slow.. but fast enough for wireless you won't notice much.

If you are looking for high quality drives and enclosures I'd recommend these 3:

I use the LaCie's, I've got three connected to my system and a 4th acting as my TM drive on my MacBook Air. Any of the above would be welcome on my desk though.

  • Purchase new iMac Late 2012 but warranty has expired

I just bought my iMac 21inch Late 2012 on July 31, 2014 at local Apple Premium Reseller in Indonesia, I knew the iMac late 2012 is the old one and the price is affordable for me so I decided to buy it. Then I think the manufacturing date that written March 2013 in the box is doesn't effect to the warranty. But until I check the warranty on Apple's service and coverage page, the warranty has expired. I asked the reseller and they said it's doesn't matter as long as you keep the proof of purchase (invoice) and I can claim my warranty at AASP. Does manufacturing date effect the warranty? Because March 2013 is mean more than 1 year after it sold. sorry for my bad english, thanks.

Have you tried calling the Apple Indonesia - Apple Store and ask about this?

You may try to see if you can start a process online, to then call or use email

Perhaps after you contact them, the regional people can call you back?

With some local contacts, you may be able to back-track; however the phone

So, you may try your luck with that phone number to see where it rings...
Seems to me you may already have talked to these people, though.

Just purchased new iMac. How do I download free os x Lion?

    Greetings Peter,
The website for Lion up to date is here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
As Csound1 suggests you should definitely check with all the software manufacturers whose software you depend on to ensure their software is compatible with this new OS.  If you upgrade without checking on those program's compatibility you may find yourself without tools you rely on.
You should also backup all your data prior to installing any new software for safekeeping: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553.
    Cheers.

  • I have not upgraded to Mountain Lion yet, have 3 major apps (acrobatpro) and adobe image ready, and apple works that is not compatible, does anyone know how long snow leopard will be supported. Don't want to upgrade until I purchase new iMac next year.

Consider running your Adobe and AppleWorks software in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

    Gramps wrote:
    What FireWire?
There is no FireWire port on the new machine so this is a non-starter.
Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. You can find the adapter by going to your Apple online store or Amazon carries it to. Here is the Amazon link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366831510&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+firewire+cable
However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a  Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.

  • I bought a new ipod touch to replace my old one that did not have icloud.  How do I erase my old ipod?

I just purchased a new ipod touch to replace my old ipod touch.  The reason I bought a new one is I wanted one that had the icloud that I could sync to my ipad and iphone.  I am going to give my old one to my husband.  I plugged my new ipod touch into my computer and put my musice library on it.  I then tried to clear my old ipod touch.  I went to General Settings and told it that I wanted to clear the ipod touch.  It went thru a few things and then it said to plug it into itunes.  I do not understand why?  On my itunes it does not list two ipod touch's on there as devices, so I am scared it I plug the new one into itunes it will clear both.  Please help!

    Yeah, what planb77 said.
Just connect your iPod to your computer, let iTunes come up, and then select Restore to Factory Settings.  This will clear off every thing and install the current version of iOS for that generation.  You can name the device and then set up iTunes to synch the items you choose.
If you have more than one computer, let hubby set up his own iTunes account and Apple ID so you don't get your stuff mixed up.

    Hey renie1515,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
When you download past purchases on an iOS device or computer, that device or computer becomes associated with your Apple ID. This article describes how to manage these associations.
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4627
Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days.
Note: Removing a device from your Apple ID does not override the 90-day timer. You must wait 90 days from the day the device was first associated with your Apple ID before it can be associated with another Apple ID.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario
