Purchased new MBP...  40GB Used?!?

I just purchased a new Mac Book Pro 15" with a 120GB Disk. It turns out that just over 40GB is used by the default installation! What's using up so much space?!? After moving over the files from my old iBook, I have less than 50GB free... =(

I understand that doing a custom install will help with the space that was eaten up by all the demos... I was just noticing that the "base" install on a new MBP seems to be a bit... Excessive... =)
I just did a bit of math and it turns out that I was a little off... My user directory is using about 23GB of space with the copied "stuff" from my old iBook. That leaves about 21 GB used by the rest of the system... Even if I remove the installed applications (which total about 3 GB) that still leaves 19 GB in use everywhere else... I'm about to do a full re-install just to reclaim some of that much needed space, but I'd love to just "know" what was eating it all up. =(
I'll do some more poking around to figure out what's going on...

  • How can I get ilife (iphoto/imovie) on my Used Retina ... Previously purchased new mbp 17 and have an Imac 27....

Well I just purchased another Retina mbp 15 and this ones a keeper (sold 2 before this was just looking for a mint one).  Now my issue is I cant get ilife (in particular imovie and iphoto) without purchasing it and I dont want to do that.... yet.
I did purchase a brand new mbp 17 in 2010 but not sure if I registered it or logged into the app store. Dont think I did because I dont see any downloads available in the app store.
I have an imac 27 Im using right now and I dug up the appllications cd it came with.
    My questions are:
How can I install ilife or any of the apps without buying them?
Are the applications one use only for the specific machines?
Is there any way to use the resource dvd to install onto my retina ?
(regarding this I have tried using remote disc and my retina wont show anything under remote disc when the cd is in my ima )
ANy input or help is appreciated. I did enjoy using imove and iphoto alot and would like to have them again.

I appreciate the replies. Grant if I have an Imac and the apps on the cd then what you are saying is it should be tied to my apple id and therefore I should be able to install them on my new macbook?
I dont recall when I bought my mbp 17 if it had a cd and back then it was my first mac.. dont think there was an app store just itunes. It isnt tied to my account but shouldnt it be? I guess the person who bought that 17 from me got a free bundle :/
Its not a matter of $30 I understand that fully. Its just its $30 wasted if I am able to get it.
What im confused about (and I dont care to argue apples reasoning for it) is tying ilife to 'that Mac alone" is just dumb when a new owner of a machine cant install it and has to buy it again. that means the original owner keeps the apps for any machine he wishes and it isnt for the machine.
I think im confusing myself and possibly answered my own question but ill leave it lol.

  • Purchased new MBP on July 8 manf. date was 3/21

Is this normal? This was a new MBP 15" 2 GHZ 1 Gb 100 GB purchased on JUly 8th and the manf. date was 3/21/06. This machine was almost 4 months old. Was bought from major Apple Distributor. Should I return or at least question the dates.
    Thanks

    Hi grump,
So you have the same build week as I do. Mine has been great. I hope yours will too. As far as the heat, they run hot. It's a fact. There were two firmware updates since yours was built. Did you install them? The SMC update cooled mine. I also turn off Bluetooth when not in use, and have my Energy Settings at Better Performance.
Run Software Update. Repair Permissions. And install the firmware. Then enjoy your new computer!

New MacBook Pro.  Came with OS 10.7.4
Used Migration Assistant in initial set up
    Safari crashes immediately on launch
System I migrated from, had Safari 6
Don't see any way to reload or to update Safari 6 on the new MBP
Software Update says all software on this computer is up to date

Updating to Safari 6 for Lion may help.
Click here >  Safari Quits Every Time Opened: Apple Support Communities
Then click the link posted by:  gregoryfromcork
That will automatically download this file >  Safari6Lion.pkg.download
    Now quit Safari.
Go to your Downloads folder and double click that file and follow the instructions for installing.
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.

  • How to set up new MBP to use D-Link print server

New to Mac.  MBP found 2 of my 3 printers right away.  Tried manually configuring the 3rd which is an older HP Laserjet 1320 connected via USB to a D-Link print server.  In Win you config using the IP address and port name.  Configuration appeared to work but nothing gets sent to printer.  If this is an easy fix I would like to go that route  but if the print server hardware is too old please suggest good alternative that will work for both Windows and Mac systems as I have both in the house.
    Thanks

I was able to resolve this by rebooting the print server.

  • New MBP users using XP via Boot Camp - Can you install Open Type Fonts?

Have any of the new MacBook Pro owners that have been using Windows XP via Boot Camp been able to install Open Type Fonts, i.e. fonts that are sold by Adobe?
I have now tried this on two new MacBook Pros, and I have tried three different retail versions of Windows XP on each system. It just does not work.
I keep getting the "Unable to Install Font" message, which suggests that I contact the font vendor, which I have. I have also tried many different versions of different fonts.
After having troubleshooted with Adobe and Microsoft, and after having reinstalled Windows over 6 times on two different new MacBook Pros, I am starting to believe that this issue affects all new MacBook Pros.
For some points, could someone please try to install an Open Type Font in Windows XP, and let me know if you are successful?
    Thank you!

I had the exact same problem and *finally solved it*. I am running Windows XP Professional on a new MacBook Pro via BootCamp as well. Although its totally contradictory to logic, you need to use True Type fonts. I understand, you open your fonts folder and all the standard fonts are Open Type. We had purchased a font family that I had running on my Dell which used the exact same operating system. It was Open Type and it worked fine. I got a new MacBook Pro and was transfering everything over, including all of my fonts. The fonts that we purchased as or had converted to Open Type for me (the only windows guy working on graphics related stuff) were not loading on the new machine (MacBook Pro) even though they worked fine on the old (Dell). When I tried to install them, I kept getting an error that read something like "unable to install font. it may be corrupt, contact font vendor." I spent about a week with the font vendor trying to figure it out. no luck. One day I tried install a folder full of other fonts, mixed versions of True Type and Open Type, and all of the True Type installed and the Open Type did not. I got my hands on a True Type version of the font I was struggling with and now it works fine.
It makes no sense. Every person who seemingly knows way more about this type of stuff seems to think that this is not possible, and that I'm not smart enough to understand what I did. They will tell you that there is nothing different about running windows on a Mac than on a PC, in fact it should run better on a Mac, blah blah blah (not really true in actual practice as far as my experiences go). But this worked for me and I have no problems with it anymore. Good luck.

  • Have to purchase new license to use previously purchased CS2

I'm surprised that nobody was shocked or had anything to comment about my issue with CS2. I know it's 2 versions back, and I'm currently running CS3 production studio and CS4 design premium, so it's not like I don't like to update. I called about a licensing issue, and the nice lady in India told me I would have to purchase CS4 becuase that is the new version and I'm currently 2 versions behind. In other words, I would have to buy another license in order to activate the license I already purchased? Yes was the response I recieved.
I know it sounds all very crazy, and I wish I were calling from my cell phone so I could have recorded the conversation, but if this is something that anyone else has had an issue with, wil you please let me know how to get around it. I have friends who know how to crack the license, but I'm not like that. I would just like to run this software that I've purchased.

I suggest you get that AppleCare plan cancelled and refunded because you shouldn't have been able to buy it for an iPod that's out of warranty. It must be bought during the initial 12 month warranty.
Then, you'll need to get a new AppleCare plan for the new iPod.

  • Planning to purchase new MBP help!

I'm planning to buy the MBP tomorrow at the Southlake, TX store......any buying advice.
    Thanks

    yeah...dont buy one.
seriously though, if you need one now or have been planning on buying it for a while, then perhaps this wont matter to you. but there is a good amount of evidence that the MBP will be updated soon, potentially with Santa Rosa and/or LED screens. I just bought one last week so....I am potentially in the same boat, except that its too late for me. However, there is something to be said for the fact that no matter when you buy a new Mac there will always be some big update coming soon that you are going to miss out on, if not this one, then some other one.
    Basically...take a look at this

  • New MBP: Vista crashes during install w/Boot Camp-any suggestions?

Trying to install vista on new MBP. Using Boot Camp, everything seems to work until the very end, and Then Vista says it couldn't finish due to a problem with a device(I'll have to check the exact error at home tonight....)and that I will need to restart and re-install. Then it gets stuck restarting and going to the same message over and over. so frustrating....
This is with a fresh copy of OSX 10.5.5 on a new MBP 2.4 with 4G of ram, right out of the box. New copy of Vista SP1, and following the bootcamp instructions to the letter. I installed all Apple software updates before launching bootcamp. Other than the Apple updates, am I missing something?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • New MBP - set up  - media folder not working?

ok, I have a lovely new MBP, I used to have my external HD as my Itunes Media folder location, just pointed it to that folder again, but itunes is doing nothing. usually when I have done this in the past it starts to feed in all my playlists etc.
any ideas of what I might be doing wrong here? something changed since I did it previously in Tiger?

on my previous MBP I had itunes set to use my external for my songs. then how come they are not showing?
File -> Add to library and select the folder where the music is located.
I can't get itunes to recognise those playlist or even the library as before?
"Those playlists" are in the iTunes library file in the \Music\iTunes\ folder on your old computer.
Did you copy the \Music\iTunes\ folder from your old computer to your new computer?

  • I Have  "New" MBP (Mid 2009) and Would Like to Use Airport Extreme

This might be a very basic question , but I do not know the answer so I came to some experts for help. I have a "new" MBP OS 10.6.4 SL. I received it about 1 month ago after the genius bar could not fix a 3 year-old MBP. At one time the Airport Extreme was hooked up when I first got the 3-year-old MBP, but I kept running into troubles with it so I purchased a Verizon MiFi2200.
I have this new MBP, I still have the MiFi2200 from Verizon which I access via Airport. I would like to try the 3 year-old Airport Extreme again, but I am wondering if having the Verizon MiFi2200 will allow me to also have the Airport Extreme. Also, I am wondering if this Airport Extreme is too old for what is currently available (and if it is secure enough). I would need to get help from Applecare. I tried once, when I first started having trouble with it, and it was way beyond my ability. I think I made things worse and I hope I did not do any hardware damage. I tried to set it up, after having it disconnected for about 2 years, and I did not call applecare.
So I am wondering if I can have the MiFi2200 installed by VZAccessManager (but turned off when I use the Airport Extreme) and the 3 year-old Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station set-up at the same time. Also, is this model still OK to use (I really have no idea how long something like this Airport Extreme is good to use), and if I can use it, are there online instructions to set it up or would it be best to get Applecare's help. I would also like to know how I could find out if there have been any firmware updates or other updates for this Airport Extreme since it was last used (about 2 years ago)
thanks in advance and I apologize if my terminology is not correct or too amateurish.

OK, I am not following you exactly and I guess it is important to know what the existing set-up is like. Maybe you will understand my amateurish language. Before I moved in to this condo, the manager of the complex asked me if I need to use the ethernet ports in the rooms or will I be setting up a wireless connection. I said, for now I will be using the ethernet ports in the rooms of the condo. She said Ok, I will be up to your condo to put in a modem. (She could have said router or modem, I am not sure if there is a difference, but I do know the Airport Extreme is considered a router.) She opened this box that is on the wall while she said this is where the "T1" line comes into your condo, and T1 (I think I have the right term she used) is the fastest way to get around the internet. In the box in the wall is an electrical outlet (which the tiny blue modem (I will call this a modem because I am not sure what it is) is plugged into. In the back of the tiny blue modem are 5 ethernet ports and that is all, except for the power cord which connects to the side of the tiny blue modem. In the box, already screwed into place is a CAT5 ethernet strip, for lack of a better term that has 12 ethernet ports but only 4 are actually marked. I think the four that are marked are the ones that can be used, if I needed this many, but I am only using 3 and the ethernet cable goes from one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip which is connected to the T1 line, and one of the 3 ethernet cables goes from the back of the tiny blue modem to one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip (one that is marked as previously described) So I can hook up to the internet by using one of the 3 ethernet plugs in the various rooms of the condo or I can use the MiFi2200 from Verizon for a wireless connection. I have already told you why I prefer not to use the Verizon MiFi2200 and why I would like to set-up my Airport Extreme.
As far as wanting to use the existing ethernet ports in the 3 rooms, I do not care about that unless the Airport Extreme does not work. The manager who initially hooked up the tiny blue modem said if I want a wireless connection I do not need the tiny blue modem. If I do want to use the ethernet ports in the rooms via an ethernet cable, I need the tiny blue modem. If this is tru or if I can have one and not the other, I really did not get a sense I could or could not have both a wireless and ethernet connections at the same time.
Why would I want to plug the 3 or 4 ethernet cables that go from the tiny blue modem to the ethernet strip? The ethernet strip has about 10 ethernet ports, 3 of which are marked and I assume only those 3 can be used since there are only 3 actual ethernet ports in the walls in various room for connection.
I know this is a different set-up but when I used the Airport Extreme before, I had a cable come in to my house from Comcast which was hooked up to a modem. One ethernet cable went from the modem to the back of the Airport Extreme which after Applecare helped me set up the Airport Extreme the whole house was wireless.
In this condo, which is smaller than the house I had, why do I need all 3 ethernet cables to go from the CAT5 strip to the back of the Airport Extreme? Again, on the 12 port CAT5 strip, only 3 are labeled with some code, and those 3 go out to the wall ethernet ports.
Are you getting ready to give up on me?

  • MBP(Leopard) has ALL music (Amazon, my own CDs,etc) in iTunes. I do NOT want to use in new MBP(Yosemite). Now, iPodTouch64 is now stuck at "plug in to iTunes" screen. Can I plug it in to my old MBP without fear of losing ALL?

My iPod64Touch is frozen at that screen, with no way to get to settings. I have even pressed the top (on/off) button and the button at the bottom (front) at the same time, and it just returns to the frozen screen. Let it drain, recharged, and get the same screen. I'm sure this is Apple's way of forcing me to send all my 6674 items to my new MBP(Yosemite), and know it will not include my Amazon purchases and personal CDs that are on the old MBP.  I don't use videos, photos, or anything other than music on the iPods.
ITunes on the old computer, under Devices>Device backups, shows:
    iPodTouch 64 ------------------------------------12/24/14 9:33pm
    iPodTouch 64 - Feb 14, 2015 7:07pm ----12/24/14 9:33pm
I use this device in the cars only, and have played it many times until last week, when I got the frozen screen after disconnecting from my husband's car. The CAR couldn't have tried an update, right? I forgot about Sync, didn't I? I've now checked the box to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically". Why didn't I see that before now? It's possible that the update was so large, that the iPodTouch wouldn't take it and just quit, without completing the update, but left me this unresponsive screen.
So can I safely just plug the USB from the iPod64 into the older 2008 MBP and update it from there (WITHOUT DANGER OF LOSING ENTIRE COLLECTION)? Make it simple; I'm 74 and not as savvy as I used to be! I tend to zone out with long descriptions, but if you have to....fire away...between hubby and me, we can usually figure it out.
I haven't migrated from older to newer MBP or to iPad4 yet because I wanted to be selective in doing so. I am offloading all my photos, digital art, documents and important Applications onto separate thumb drives, before upgrading the old MBP, and will probably backup the whole thing on a new external backup drive, too. Then, will upgrade to Snow Leopard (the last update the 2008 MBP will take), and use it almost exclusively offline.
I have a 'Classic iPod' that I purposely haven't updated since the last of '14. All purchases from all sources are on there (as on the '08MBP) and I want to keep it that way. We keep it in players and do not plan to update it or play anywhere else, except perhaps with headphones or through the tuner occasionally. I'm assuming it is safe from the same fate?

  • Why can't I use my old Time Machine BU on TC for my new MBP???

This is getting very frustrating as all the literature says I can use a Time Machine Backup on my TC network for my new MBP just purchased.
The "old" TM backup (BU) was working fine with my MBP laptop that I just replaced (BOTH have Lion 10.8.2 updated).
When I turned on my new MPB -
I went through the system setup which took the information from my old one and carried it over - it worked fine
I then went to the TM system preferences and tried to start with the old TM BU which was called MBP13 sparsebundle
I was never given the window "would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from an older Mac".
I did go to the TM system preferences and clicked "select back up disk. But it selected the disk that the sparsebundle was on and then started a brand new backup. Thats not what I wanted to do.
Remember that I use TC with an external Hard Drive to store the TM BU.... I tried both connecting directly to my new MBP as well as through the network.
What I want to do is just inherit that old TM BU and then go forward.
I really could use some specific help here...
    Thanks in advance.

You can migrate from one machine to another provided both machines are able to boot from the same version of OS X. But that is not the case for you because the two computers have different hardware. The new hardware requires a special build of Mountain Lion. Your old machine uses a different build making its version of Mountain Lion incompatible with the new computer.
Once there is a new public release of Mountain Lion compatible with both computers, then you can install on each as well as migrate from one to the other.
This is a special situation that only occurs when there is a change in hardware that occurs before the public release of OS X has been updated for the new hardware.

  • Someone's been using my new MBP...

I recently purchased a new MBP at the time of the update.
I went to sync my iPhone 3G to the MBP and backup prior app purchases.
When I went to do so, it said that the 3G was not authorized on this MBP. I went to authorize it, only to find a random e-mail address in that field -- as if someone had previously synced another iPhone to my MBP.
I googled that e-mail address and came across a Chinese Facebook user page.
Clearly, someone used my MBP before I received it. It was built in China, so one would figure it was at the production facility.
I spent $3,000 on this MBP! I wanted a new MBP! Since it was used, I have 2 questions:
    (1) Is it safe to continue to use it? Any chance this random guy embedded some malware on there?
    (2) What is the proper recourse? Have Apple send me a new one?
    And random third question:
    (3) Should I set up my new iPhone 4 to the MBP -- since the set up asks for the last 4 of my ss#?
    Thanks!

    Hi cobalt_79,
Contacting Apple is really your best next step, despite the time lapse between when you purchased the computer and when you noticed the problem. Explain the situation and ask what they recommend. They may tell you to just wipe the OS and start again, they may offer to replace the machine. But whatever is the advice it's going to have to come from them.
I don't think you got a 'used' computer, I'm sure it was new. But it had to be assembled and QC'd by someone. Apparently that person thought signing into iTunes was necessary. Out of curiosity, when you started up the computer did it prompt you to create a new user account or was one already established? It'd seem odd to have stored information on the computer if a pre-existing user account was not already established.

  • Upgrading RAM and SSD versus Purchasing a New MBP

Hi Apple Community. What are your thoughts on upgrading my mid-2010 MBP with more RAM and an 380 GB SSD HD versus purchasing a new MBP with the faster processor et al? The upgrade would run me about $500, whereas a new laptop would cost me much more. Here are my current specs: 2.4 GHz, 13-in MBP, 4GB RAM and running Mountain Lion. I use my laptop mainly for web browsing, office and streaming music/videos. I don't do much photo editing other than occasionally using Gimp. Thanks for your help!

For a bit over $600, you could upgrade your particular MBP to 16GB of RAM and a 480 GB SSD and get a remarkable increase in speed. A new MBP would cost about $1,400 more and that's with a maximum of 8 GB of RAM. You'd get a longer warranty with AppleCare with the new one (for another $250). You also have a graphics processor on yours but a new 13" MBP has only the built-in graphics. The only thing I'd miss is the USB 3.0 ports vs the USB 2.0 ports you have.
Upgrading your current Mac sounds like a speedy and economical choice.
