Purchased songs no longer 'authorized' following hard drive crash?

Hello-
I recently had a hard drive failure in my PowerBook and had to replace the drive. My iTunes library was backed up to an external drive, but after moving all of my songs to the new one and reinstalling software, etc, I'm now getting a message when I try to play songs that I have purchased in the past:
"This computer is not authorized to play 'xxxxx'. Would you like to authorize it?"
Obviously, the computer is the same, but I'm assuming my software reinstall process is what is preventing iTunes from seeing my computer as already being 'authorized'. What can I do to correct this? Thanks in advance-

Actually, I've contacted Apple support for the store and they recommended that I reauthorize all my machines when I was below the maximum authorizations. The system may have changed now, but I would check with Apple. I believe you can only reset once a year or something like that and IMHO it's better to reset your authorizations and have a year buffer zone than run with a computer taking two authorizations and then reset later (giving you a longer time period until you can reset again).
There are other fixes. Create a new user, go to /Users/Shared and rm a certain invisible file (not named because for some reason threads with this fix have been deleted before), reinstall iTunes again, etc.
Good Luck,
-j

  • My hard drive crashed and my songs were not stored on my iPod.

My eleven year old son Mike has an iPod Nano. Mike had bought about 40 songs on iTunes. Our hard drive crashed and my older son had erased Mike's songs from his Nano.
Is there any way to download the songs again? How can I contact iTunes to find out?

im sorry but unless you backed them up on a cd or flash drive they are probably pretty much gone

  • Hard Drive crashed - no back up - a way to recover my purchased songs?

    Hello,
I just had my hard drive crash and I had not backed up the majority of the files on my computer including over 50 songs I had recently purchased on iTunes. Is there anyway I can recover these purchases to my computer?!?!
    Thank you!

The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
If you have an iPod with the purchases on it the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod

  • Can purchased songs be re-downloaded in case of a hard-drive crash?

I purchased several songs onto my iBook. Then my hard-drive crashed. I replaced it, but they weren't able to reload my information from that harddrive onto the new one. Although I had a back-up, it was only of a specific data file and I didn't realize iTunes saves the song in the Users music file so I hadn't backed that up. Is there any way to re-download those songs I've already paid for? Any and all help would be appreciated.

Good luck getting replacements. I just discovered that an entire season of a tv program I bought last March , plus several episodes from other shows, did not download. I had not wanted to watch them at the time I bought them and just assumed they were all downloaded. And, one episode from another season I just purcased didn't download...the first episode! According to the link Apples tech people sent me, they don't let you redownload things you have paid for! I honestly don't understand this. It's all copy protected anyway and can only be played on certain machines so why can't you redownload if you lose it or never got it? I do back up everything and it is not in my backups. It just never made it to my computer.
I buy tons of books on Audible.com and can redownload one any time I wish.
Apples stinginess about letting people who purchased from them redownload is really bad business. I've contacted them again to ask for another download but if they say no, it will be my last purchase from the iTunes store. With Amazon now offering a lot of the same stuff, I can take my business elsewhere.

  • I had a hard drive crash so replaced it and now iTunes does not recognize the computer as authorized to play some songs in my playlist.  help

I had a hard drive crash, replaced the hard drive and now iTunes does not recognize or authorize my iMac to play some songs.  help

iCloud Backup is for your iPad, not for your computer.
Whatever you bought from iTunes is yours forever and can be downloaded as many times as you want. This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Here is the procedure for your reference.
On a computer, launch iTunes. Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
"Sign in" using the Apple ID used to purchase your songs, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
Whatever you have that did not originate from iTunes will have to be obtained from whatever means you used to obtain it in the past.

  • My computer's hard drive crashed and now that its fixed I want to download previously purchased songs from Itunes

My computer's hard drive crashed and now that its fixed (my computer) I want to download previously purchased songs from Itunes.  When I'm signed into Itunes and attempt to download from the cloud a text box pops up saying "I need to authorize the computer before I can download previous purchases".  I'm using the same computer that I purchased all previous songs.  So how do I authorize my computer?

    On your Computer...
    Open iTunes...
If you're using iTunes 11 click on the box icon in the top-left corner to see the " Show Menu Bar "
and from the Menu Bar select Store...
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer.
(In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.
    See Here for full details...

  • Hard drive crashed awhile ago, got new one but now some of my purchased iTunes songs are showing they are downloaded but NOT in library and it won't let me download to library.  any help?

Asking for help getting previous purchases on my ipod touch and iPad... my computer hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  My music was a mess.  I restored most back but some of my purchased music is saying it is downloaded but it is nowhere to be found.  I don't understand why I can't get the music I already paid for back in my library.  Any help?   would be appreciated...

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Are you doing this?
You have to sign in and download each iTunes account individually.

  • Hard drive crash - re-download iTunes purchased songs?

    Hello,
My hard drive crashed on the weekend and I lost several purchases I made through iTunes. Is it possible to get permission to re-download them?

Are they synced to an iPod? If so, you can transfer purchases from iPod to computer. Apple is not obligated to let you download purchases a second time. This is why it's important to have a backup.

  • How do I get songs on my ipods back into my itunes library, which was lost due to hard drive crash, How do I get songs on my ipods back into my itunes library, which was lost due to hard drive crash

Due to a hard drive crash I lost my entire Itunes library.  Majority of this was from an extensive CD library that I imported into itunes.  When I reloaded itunes and viewed my library I only found the titles purchased from itunes.  How do I get music off of an itune classic & itune nano ipods and put back into the library so I don't have to re import my extensive cd collection

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod. And here is a guide about how to transfer ipod songs back to computer. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • External Hard Drive crashed with all songs on it.  HELP!!!

Hello. My kids have used my work PC as their itunes playground for over the past year. I added a Lacie external hard drive to help them save thier music and had itunes on it, as well as my pc. The external hard drive crashed and won't communicate with the pc at all so when we bring up itunes on the pc it shows exclamation marks next to almost all of the songs and won't play them. I still have almost all of our music on my ipod, except about 170 songs that they purchased since I last plugged in my ipod, they have their own mini's. I want to know how to get the songs back to my computer. I am afraid if I connect the 60GB ipod to the pc all of our songs will be wiped out since my ipod is on autosync. Can anyone give me a reliable way to get everything back to normal? PLEASE!!!!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article:: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

Help! My husband backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone from my library! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

    Hello Nataroo007,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
    1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
    3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.
