Purchased used iBook - now want to upgrade to Leopard

I bought a used iBook G4 on eBay with 10.4.11 installed but no discs. I want to upgrade to Leopard. Will my other programs be saved if I install Leopard. I am most concerned with Office for Mac 2004. I don't have the discs for that either.
I am a total Mac newbie.
Thanks!

It should work if you do a standard upgrade install. A completely clean install would completely wipe whatever you currently have.
That being said, I've heard of some applications having problems when the operating system was upgraded.

Someone else bought an app on the store on my new computer. I had already purchased the app before on my old computer, so I deleted the app on my new computer that the other person purchased. I now want to download the app again through MY account. When I click INSTALL it asks for ID, but it shows up automatically with the other person's ID, so I delete that and enter mine instead. I then click SIGN IN, but then it says "Unknown error", then I click OK, then it says "We could not complete your request. There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (4)". How do I get rid of all info of other people's IDs so I can get the app through my account again?
The app that I'm trying to download actually might have been a pirated app. But I deleted it, so why is it not letting me get it through my account?
    Please help!
    Thanks

  • I have produced DVD using iMovie, now want to download this back to iMovie, will not read DVD, have been told a piece of software available - any chance anybody knows what?

have produced DVD using iMovie, now want to download this back to iMovie, will not read DVD, have been told a piece of software available - any chance anybody knows what?

Handbrake is not ideal for this.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

I've got a MacBook Pro running Tiger with the original Boot Camp Beta PC Partition that I want to upgrade to Leopard, but I don't want to have to re-install everything into the PC partition. I want to be able to take advantage of the newer features of the latest Boot Camp. Is this possible?

Just upgrade your OS X, then do [this|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15553.html].

  • We purchased Lion OS in April and uploaded to our iMac and now want to upgrade out MacPro.  We cannot figure out how to use the previous purchase (says you can use on 3 computers)....confused.  How do we begin the process using our previous purchase?

We Purchased Lion OS in April and uploaded to our iMac.  We are now ready to upgrade our MacPro, but can't seem to find out how to upgrade using the previous purchase (said we could use the Lion OS purchase on up to 3 devices).  We have the receipt of purchase with the Order # and Purchase #, but I just can't figure out how to do the upgrade.  Where do I go?  What reference # do I enter?

Go back to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase Lion. It should show up in your Purchases list ready to download. If it doesn't, log out, log back in, and hold down Option key while clicking on Purchases.
A tip: Once the download is finished, dismiss the Installer. Go to your Applications folder and find it - copy it to another folder or hard drive to keep for emergency purposes. Then click on that installer and install (it is automatically removed/deleted after the installation is complete). That way you can avoid having to do another lengthy download.
And, yes, just to confirm: you can install Lion on as many Macs you own and control. However, the license is not transferable; if you ever sell the machine, you need to erase Lion and reinstall the original OS.
You don't go to iTunes - go to the Mac App Store (in your Applications folder). You do need 10.6.6 (or 10.6.8) to have the Mac app store.

  • What would be the best Memory to purchase for my iMac 7.1 I want to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard or Lion

What would be the best Memory to purchase for my iMac 7.1. I want to upgrade from OS Leopard to Snow Leopard or Lion?

Crucial.com and macsales.com (OWC) sell RAM tested to work with Macs.  Prices are good and the sites will guide you to the maximum you can install (even if the "official number" from Apple release at time of system design is different).

plunked down WAY TOO MUCH on upgrades to Beige/Yosemite/MDD over the years, enough that "penny wise, pound foolish" I could have had Starbucks instead and gotten a new Mac.
    Hello Hatter, you wrote:
I don't like to work on a system that pegs cpu @ 100%, I want it to run smooth and graceful. I don't need $5000 to get there. And you can have a LOT of fun upgrading Mac Pro and gradually add what you want to. And if you are adventurous... get yrs out of it in the process.
Software and OS upgrades have always helped market new hardware.
Number one: I don't come anywhere near 100 percent cpu usage at all when I am using my MDD. Though, I don't use Apple's complex software, once in a blue moon I will burn DVD's or CD's, but this is fast enough for me.
Secondly: You have owned an MDD far longer than I have. I just recently got this MDD which is a 2003 dual 1.25 - the VERY VERY last one before the G5 came out. I am happy with this machine as it is doing everything that my digital audio did, but faster. I don't need windows, though if emulation of TI-99/4A, MAME, and MESS become a problem, I might consider a MAC MINI alongside my MDD. I am in no way shape of form going to get rid of the G4. Plus, I have so much fun with the powerpc processor and its capabilities. I know, the bus speed is 167, but consider this. I came from a digital audio to this MDD and it only cost me 400 dollars on craigslist. The condition:
Brand spanking new! The owner told me he had never had any problems with it. No over heating problems, nothing! The only problem I had with it was a bad front panel board - but thats all in the past.
True, I personally wouldn't plunk down any more money as far as CPU upgrades go since the 1.8 and 1.6 duals don't offer L3 cache. If anything, I would get at low price a 1.42 board to put in this machine and make it dual 1.42, though 10 percent increase is really miniscule.
Which brings me to the next point - of course, upgrading a Beige, Yosemite was a waste of money because for what those systems were worth they ran on a G3 processor. But, we are talking about a dual 1.25/1.42 MDD, not G3.
I do like the Intel macs, though from what you heard about me spewing hatred towards them and the architecture, I was just plainly upset that day for no reason and decided to take it out on others. For that, I am deeply sorry. However, I plan to get a Mac intel mini to be networked alongside my MDD. I just realized that really for what I use my MAC for, I wouldn't need a mac pro or anything remotely expensive, given right now that I am just starting a new job in a few weeks.
Finally, I am still at odds of whether to upgrade to Leopard, since most of my software is all tiger oriented. I originally had Panther 2 years ago and I was hesitant about going to Tiger, but I did and I am glad I did since I see the performance it is giving me.
So, the MDD is not a bad machine and really isn't as slow as one would think - at least for what I use my system for. Explain to me why you are getting 100 percent cpu on yours?

  • I want to upgrade to leopard but not got intel

i purchased my g5 a while ago now and since apple released snow leopard the original leopard is impossible to buy. With the original g5 being power pc and not intel im unable to purchase any newer versions apart from os x leopard. i just don't want to spend the money on ebay as i guess they know its impossible to find and are selling it at stupid prices. Please can someone help!!!!!

Try calling the Apple Store phone number at the upper left corner of any Apple Store web page. I seem to recall they sold Tiger (for PowerPC) for a while after Leopard was released, even though the item was not listed anywhere on the online Apple Store. You had to call and ask for it.

  • How much do Canadians have to pay for books purchased using iBooks?

What is the cost for Canadians to purchase books on the iPad?
    Regards
    Pete

It varies by the book, just as prices vary in a bookstore that carries printed books. You'd have to mention a specific title before anyone could tell you the price. Or, if you have (or have access to) an iPad, you can just go to the iBooks Store and search or browse yourself.
    Regards.

  • Do I Need to Repurchase a Season Pass Purchased Using my Now-Gone 1st Gen Apple TV?

We purchased a season pass a few months ago on our old Apple TV, which we have since donated (it was wiped before donation).  I just went to re-download the season we purchased, and it looked as if iTunes was going to charge me again for it.
How can I re-download the season without paying twice?  Thanks in advance.

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy fo your purchases?
You wiped your Apple TV without making sure you had a backup copy of your content?

  • Which harddrive should I use, if i want to upgrade my mbp HD?

5400 or 7200? will 7200 be too hot for mbp? and sata 1.5 or sata 3.0?
is it Hitachi Travelstar 7K2000 HTS722020K9SA00 200GB Hard Drive
    (Serial ATA-150, 7,200 RPM, 16MB - MPN: 0A50940) good for mbp?
    thanks

5400rpm drives are okay for general stuff, 7200rpm drives are good for real time video streaming etc because of the fast spin times and bigger cache sizes.
    Again, SATA1.5 is good enough.
Personally I recommend Fujitsu drives which are quiet, long MTBF and offer decent cache sizes. Don't buy seagate drives - I've had bad experiences.

  • Is it possible to use iPhoto 9 on an upgraded Snow Leopard

I would like to use iLife 09 on the computer with this Snow Leopard version.

    Thanks,
Yes, it required upgrading and changed my library so now I am forced to use iLife 11 which I do not like.  I have that version on a lap top and disliked it.  Now I just have to get used to the new version however using the desktop and a magic mouse helps with the scrolling somewhat.  I may  find something other than iPhoto for pictures in the future.
