Purchased used Ipod Touch 3. Has absolutely no software on it.

I purchased a used Ipod Touch 3rd G. It came with nothing on it. And I mean nothing. When I power it on, the screen shows a picture of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to the itunes logo. Pluging into Itunes does nothing. I have various Apple devices and have been using iTunes for years. I am thinking the problem is that the Ipod has no software it won't even begin to do anything. It seems to be like having a computer with the hard drive wiped clean. How do I get basic software on it?

halfromcoFor how to restore the iPod see:

makgirl2004, for up to and including iOS 5, the iOS came with a YouTube app. Just use that app. However, that app can be hidden by Restrictions (Settings>General>Restrictions)
