Purchased Zen Micro without Installation

I just bought a used Zen Micro 5gb from a friend who didn't have the original installation CD or instructions. I believe I can download everything from Creative's website, but can someone please tell me what the latest and best driver, firmware, and media application are? And what is the proper installation process: do I install the driver first or the application; when should I upgrade the firmware; etc?
Thank you in advance.

I hope this helps you out.
Steps to installing the Zen Micro v.x & 2.x in Windows XP.
Note: If you want to do a clean install. Uninstall everything that is related to the ZM. Including the driver, Creative Mediasource, and Zen Micro Media Explorer.
Note: You can find all of these files on the Creative Website. Click on the Support link and start from there. You do not need your Installation CD anymore.
Note: You must have Windows Media Player 0 in order to flash to 2.x firmware and if you are going to use MTP, playsforsure, or music subscription services.
Note: If you are NOT using MTP, playsforsure, or music subscription services, you do not need to install WMP0, and #5 and #6.
Note: When flashing the firmware, follow the directions and do not use the computer and the Micro. Let it finish before you start using the computer and the Micro.
Note: When the program installs and tells you to restart, do so. Do not try to install something else afterwards. It's better that way.

• Use a Zen Micro without the batt

hello, i would like to know if there is any way to use a zen micro without the battery inserted via usb cable, because i have a 6gb micro that i don't use, the battery died, and i would like to connect it to my amplifier, but all the micros i have came without the power adapter, wich would work. My computer's motherboard suplies power trhough usb even when the pc is off, so i woudn't even had to turn it on to hear music, but, unfortunely, micro's don't work without battery when plugged to the usb cord, right?. i like to know if i can tweak something in the micro to do this...please help me...

It remembers as long as it has power. This kind of thing has been discussed before, but not in this situation, but it's still the same....
If you unplug your Micro before it's gone into it's deep sleep slumber mode, then it will forget, and start back from it's LAST deep sleep mode. However, if you let it go into the deep sleep mode, then you can unplug it, and put your battery into it, and it will be at the same point it was when you just turned it off.
(by the way, not to thread jack, but this is my 50st post. Wow).

• Zen Micro 6gb installation probl

Ok, so Iv'e sent in a 5 gb zen micro twice now because of that headphone jack problem, and this time when they sent me a new one, they "upgraded" me to a 6gb. Well, I try to use this 6gb with the software i have installed from the last Micro I had, and my comp will not recognize it. So I try to user the cd that came with my old Micro, and it will not install right. When they sent me this 6gb, the only thing they sent me was the Micro and its battery, so I have no way to know if the cd that comes with a new 6gb is different form a 5gb cd, because if it is, then am I screwed?

A firmware basically is what makes an electronic device tick. It is the software responsible for every and all functions.
The Zen Micro has two versions of firmwares:
The original version works with Creative's own protocol and thus needs the installation of drivers for the system to recognize it. However it will function with all Windows versions while there also is unofficial support for Linux and MAcOS.
The second version functions using MTP, a protocol made by Microsoft and as such it is only supported by Microsoft's Windows Media Player 0 under OSs that support it (which basically only are WinXP and Vista...)
The simplest way to see which firmware you have is to look in the Micros' menu under System->Information. There you'll see firmware version.
If they both have version (..0 being the latest) then you'll need drivers for the both. As I already said, when I tried to update the drivers without uninstalling the old ones the drivers were installed but they wouldn't work.
First of all make sure the player(s) is(are) connected to the PC FIRST.
Mind you, in my case the latest drivers were already installed (I updated them but then they wouldn't work, remember?). Now here's the thing:
When I opened the drivers properties I saw that the driver was DISABLED. (under General, device usage)
Ok, I enabled it, nothing happened. Then I tried to update the drivers. Here's what I did:
I put the CD with the original drivers in the dri've and selected for windows to look for the best drivers. After some time they indeed appeared to have found a better match and then they started installing them. After the installation was complete the driver's version was the same as rhe one BEFORE the "update" (since I had already updated to the latest version). However the moment the drivers were updated the device was finally recognized by the system, not even a reboot was needed...
You could try doing that too, if that won't work then you could try DLing the LATEST drivers (along with the Zen Micro Explorer) and install them AFTER uninstalling the old ones and REBOOTING. Again, it is important having the player(s) connected BEFORE starting the installation.
If after all that you still can't connect it ask again!
Cheers!Message Edited by Keyper7 on 02-9-200604:37 PM

• Zen Micro - Lost Installation CD: Please H

Hi All,?I have a Zen Micro from 2005. I recently reformatted my hard dri've and I no longer have the installation CD for the program. I saw alot of threads out there like this but I didnt see one for the Zen Micro (I know, its 2 years old). Anyway, I went to the download application page and there just seems to be alot of files to choose from. Can someone with knowledge of this subject please specifify exactly which files I need to download and install, and it what order, so that I can get back up and running normally again ? Thank you. Note: I did have WMP but installed it a/p a stuck thread. My comp now does recognize a Zen Micro?- its just looking for software for it - thanks again

^what firmware is your Zen Micro loaded with?
I use ..0 since I don't need it for subscription services or PlaysForSure.
As for software, I use Zen Micro Explorer Web Update to organize my ZM and Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
I don't use Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer, I find Zen Micro Explorer easier to use.
It's been a long time since I installed my Zen Micro on this computer, but if I remember correctly you install the software first and then connect the Zen Micro.
Mine has never given me trouble, so I'm not much help at trouble-shooting them. :|

• Zen micro cd installation prob

hi i recently purchased a zen micro. when i try to install the software from the cd i pick the region and the language and then an error comes up saying the "demoshield player has encountered a problem and needs to close". this happens evry time and i have tried it on 2 differernt computers. has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it's

You can try downloading each individual piece of software required from the download page instead. You need the following:
. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
2. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2
3. Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.9 for Creative MediaSource
Install . then connect the player to the PC. Then install 2 (which needs the player connected for verification) followed by 3.
You can also download Zen Micro Media Explorer as well.

• I'm confused..how do I charge a Zen Micro without a charg

So after returning my headphone-jack defecti've Micro to the company, I decided to purchase one from Best Buy. But since those don't come with accesories, I don't get a charger. So how the heck am I supposed to charge my Micro without one? How does the battery charge? Does it charge when I'm connected to the computer? Or is it absolutely necessary to buy a separate charger? This might sound like a stupid question, but since I only had my other one for a day and it had the charger, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do when my battery dies?

When I recharge my Micro... it takes about 3 hours on the USB. It doesn't say docked, but it may, depending on what mode you were in(syncing). The blue light pulses and after 5 minutes(or whatever you have selected in the setup menu)the player shuts down. Charging continues until the blue light stops pulsing. Wait 30 more minutes after the blue light stops, because the Micro receives a trickle charge to completely top up the battery. I dont turn off my computer ever, but I do put it into "hibernate", or "stand-by" mode. The Micro continues to charge in this mode.

• My newly purchased Zen Micro. Prob

well i just purchased the zen micro. im currently using my own computer, but it will not recongize the mp3 player, but it does recognize it on my brother's computer. im trying to charge it with my own computer instead of my brother's. i have uploaded the cd that came with the zen, yet no connection. my zen is currently using version ..0, do i need to download anything else?Message Edited by Spoon408 on 0-23-2006 2:46 AM

hi!
try to search the forum for connection problems with the zen micro - you?ll find plenty of threads!
if you want to upgrade your players firmware to v2 - make sure you got win XP SP2 running (with WMP 0) othewise it won?t work! so if you haven?t the above described system configuration unning - keep v firmware!

• Zen Micro 5GB - Installation problems - HELP ple

Dear All
I am sure must have been asked before, so please bear with me.
Just bought a Zen Micro and cannot seem to install the supplied software from the CD. Keep getting a InstalWizard 6003 error message. Have tried restarting, deleting temporary files (even connevting to net) and still get same message.
Have tried to install then by copying files to harddri've and running from there but that fails.
What am I to do or have I a dud?
All suggestions greatefull recieved.
Andy

I was also thinking - how's your cd player on the pc - is it generally ok ?
try copying the files from the cd to your hard dri've and running from there.
Sometimes you can get -6003 errors if some of the source files are unreadable for any reason.
If that fails then i suggest downloading from creatives website and trying the install again incase you just have a dud cd.
Seeing as you've just got it i'll also tell you from my own experience......
I have a zen micro 5gb bought it about 3 months ago and had no problems with the installation but that was on a fully patched up to date winxp sp2 with 2Ghz memory.
I did have issues with the zen micro itself hanging but i upgraded to the 2..02 firmare beta and it has been happy ever since.

• Anyone ever hook up zen micro without a battery using an external power supp

Just wondering if it's possible. I guess you need to know the pinouts for the 4 contacts (I've got the 6GB version without video).
What kind of specs would you need on the power supply?
Hope somone has some info, Thanks

First, check if there's a pinout and it says "DC in 5V" or something like that. If you see it, then you just localized you power adapter's jack.
For the power adapter, you can buy the ZEN Power Adapter, which is expensi've, but, for my personal experience, I bought a generic adapter and saved me 30$, the specs of the Power Adapter is 5V and 2,4 A (EQUAL OR BELOW 2,4 A)

• How do I find out what firmware my Zen Micro has installe

Well, I did the update and I used Crucials on youtube video to see how to do it and everything worked out fine.

• *sigh* zen micro installation probl

from searches, i see that this is common. haven't found a good solution to it yet, though.
i just bought a zen micro 6GB for my girlfriend. (awww). i have XP, and installed everything on the disc except acrobat and the aol shortcut.
creative mediasource installs fine .... the zen micro explorer installs fine .... but when i plug the player to the computer, it ) doesn't charge and 2) isn't recognized.
there is a yellow question mark on its usb port when i search for it.
what am i doing wrong?

Your chances of getting it to work when XP has a service pack is greatly increased. There are some who have got their player working on XP without a service pack, but on many systems a service pack is necessary. As far as I can tell it doesn't matter if you have SP or SP2 installed, there is no difference in success rates.

• FIX: Zen Micro Installer Error - "DemoShield Player has encountered an error.

I just thought I'd post a solution to a problem I was having with the Zen Micro Explorer software installation because it might help someone else. Also, this forum is well indexed by search engines so it will be easy for people to find. It took me well over an hour to track this down.
After starting the Zen Micro Explorer Installer CD, a full screen splash is shown of the creative logo and then DemoShield is started for the software install. It shows an intro screen where you must click 'Next,' on clicking next the DemoShield program was crashing with the generic Windows error "DemoShield encountered an error..." The problem appears to be a software conflict between DemoShield and Apple's QuickTime (any version as far as I know). Disabling the QuickTime startup entry does not help, installing in Safe Mode does not help and exiting any instance of QT in the system tray does not help either.
To fix the problem you must un-install the QuickTime software from your computer by going through the Add/Remove Programs screen in the Control Panel. Once un-installed, run the Creative installer CD again, this time it will run correctly. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the install.
<i>Please note that if you have installed iTunes on your system it will not run while QuickTime is uninstalled, this is normal. Re-installation of QuickTime is covered later in this post.</i>
When you have completed the install and restarted your computer you can re-install QuickTime. At the time of writing (4th Sept 2005) QuickTime and iTunes are bundled in one download package so you must download both. You can <a href='http://www.apple.com/QuickTime/download/' target=_blank>get the bundle here. Let it download and run the installer. If you already have iTunes installed, the installer will 'Repair' your installation, detecting that QT is missing it will re-install. If you do not have iTunes the installer will installer iTunes and QuickTime.
When you have completed the QuickTime+iTunes install you have got around the DemoShield issue. I hope this of use to anybody with a similar problem.Message Edited by PhilM on 09-5-2005 02:30 AM

Hi Jeremy,
I knew it was an issue with QuickTime because I clicked on 'Send Error Report' on the error message and it took me to <a href='http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=0b73e24-7433-4ee-ac4c-49956d08c85c&SID=623' target=_blank>this page. It states "An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an unknown error occurred in QuickTime Player. This software was created by Apple Computer, Inc.."
My QuickTime version is 7.0.2. My operating system is WIndows XP Home (Athlon 64; 52Mb RAM)
Eventually I just tried uninstalling QuickTime and it wroked after I did that. Some screenshots: <a href='http://www.phantomphil.co.uk/ZM/' target=_blank>Click
The contents of my disk.id file reads:
Creative Zen Micro
ZENM-CDSD-W-LB
Hope this hel

• Anyone with Win XP Home Edition - SP2 have any luck connecting to Zen Micro???

Has anyone out there that has Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 had any success with the following:
. Using Zen Media Explorer with the Zen Micro successfully?
2. Actually having the Zen Micro recognized by the Windows XP Home Edition (using USB2.0)?
Since my first attempt at connecting to the Zen Micro without the software and firmware updates was unsuccessful, I upgraded Zen Media Explorer to 4.00.8 (from 4.00.3) and upgraded firmware to v2.00.2 (from v). Still no luck!!!
I need a savior here before I decide to start looking into return policys.
My problems are:
. I plug in the zen micro into the usb2.0 port, and it states, "Found New Hardware: Creative Zen Micro."
2. But then it immediately says there is a problem with the device and takes me to the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard."
3. I step through the wizard, point it to search for the appropriate drivers on the Zen install cd rom and also to search the C:\Windows\System32, only to have it tell me that "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary hardware."
Any suggestions? There must be something in XP Home Edition that is not jiving with the zen and its software because I have used the Micro successfully at work on a XP Professional machine with no issue.
I will call Creative tomorrow if I don't get things settled out.

Ok I had the same problem. It's most likely a driver installation error.
Insert the software CD.
After it starts exit the installation and go to My Computer. Right click the D:\ (or whichever letter is your CD dri've) and select Explore..
From there you will look for a Folder named Drivers.
From there you should see 3 files and double click the first of the three,( If it's not the first one try the second or third)
This should be the driver installation pack for Creative Zen microdri've players ( Which includes the Zen Micro) After it should say something abuot re-connecting the player to make the changes fully effecti've. I restarted my computer and the player and plugged the player into the same USB port and XP recognized the player and Zen Media Explorer said teh player was connected.

• Zen Micro- CHINESE Language Display quest

Hi, i am looking to buy a Zen Micro really soon.
but i have a question regarding it displaying CHINESE CHARACTERS.
does anyone have problems doing so, or any suggestions or warnings?
do i have to have CHINESE Windows for it to work?
thanks.

I have mp3 files with ID tag information in traditional Chinese and the information displays on my Zen Micro without any problems. If you are using WinXP then you don't need a Chinese version - English WinXP is capable of displaying and manipulating Chinese data. Note that on WinXP you need to set default character set for non-unicode characters to either traditional or simplified Chinese, this setting should match the setting on your Zen Micro or you'll end up with gibberish.
