Purchasing a Mac Pro while visiting the USA

Well I am up for a a new Mac, my aging (but not out) G4 MDD (Dual 867) is struggling with latest app releases, especially iDVD, iMovie and iPhoto with no chance of using the latest release pro apps. Aperture looks like a very good upgrade from iPhoto, and I am eager to get a machine that can handle FSP and get off iMovie.
And the wife has agreed, only because I am visiting Florida in Feb.
The premium for Macs in Dubai is too much for the 2 Ghz its $690 and the 3 Ghz its $1000 over the USA price. So we thought that with the savings I could get a better video card and wireless options. Memory over here is a cheap as anywhere.
I know the 3 GHz model gives the greatest savings but all three models share the same bus speed and memory, it looks like only the CPU is different. There is a good possibility of upgrading in the future with off-the-shelf Intel CPUs, and I have seen the report on testing quad core Intel CPUs, not sure if it is real and not a hoax but that gives hope for upgrades in the future.
The question is
Can I walk into an Apple store and ask for a non-standard config?
I would want to add the BT and Wi-Fi options and a better video card.
Customs in Dubai is not a problem, a maximum on 5% if I am unlucky. And at only 19kg it still leaves me with 17kg for clothes and stuff for the week.

Good point about warranty.
What normally happens over here is warranty is view as useless. The retail industry sells and sells and is not that concerned with warranty at all. Yes you can take faulty hardware in for repair but if you are not a company then you get the run-around and they will keep your hardware for weeks, they will say they are waiting for the manufacture to reply but experience tells me nothing is happening.
Example: I purchased two 250gig hard disks for my RAID, within three months one failed so I went back to the store. They had stock but refused to replace the hard disk, they insisted on sending my faulty hard disk back to Maxtor. They did not want to take existing stock because that's for new customer who will pay. After three weeks with no progress I had to threaten them with legal action before they did anything.
In the west most retailers would have confirmed date of purchase, photocopied it and replace the hard disk while I was in the store if they had stock. They would then claim back through the manufacture or distributor.
I have had my G4 for four years with no faults, I hope that reliability you also continue with the new MacPro. Otherwise I would fix it myself and not rely on warranty.
Apple does have a master distributor in the UAE so I can approach them, saying that I recently moved to Dubai from England but need my MacPro fixing under warranty. One thing in my favor is 80% of the population here in expatriate.

Generally, it's ok to install on two machines as long as they are both yours and you only use one version at a time.

I have been using a Lightroom 5 including recent upgrades on my Mac Pro laptop for the past 1 year. This was purchased as an upgrade from Lightroom 4 for which I have a serial number. Today I purchased a new Macbook pro and loaded my Lightroom 5 however it is asking for my serial number which I have misplaced. I am unable to trace my serial number anywhere. I have even checked my adobe membership to locate my serial number but it does not seem to have any record which is strange as I have been using this software for over a year now and the previous versions since 2009. Could someone help me in my predicament.

  • Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. Help?

Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. I can change them on my old Mac Pro with Lion, but not the new one. I can scan but I can't save it to a folder on my hard drive. I can only let it default to a back up date folder. Tried all sorts of things to change the preferences and folders, nothing worked. Ideas?

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • I need few answers before purchasing a Mac Pro.

    Hi.
I am already using MBP 15" Late 2011.
It's about gaming at ultra settings. or medium settings.
I played this game, World Of Warcraft on MBP and it turns about to be 80. Celius temprature though it resist till 100. Celius, I really care for my Fans when they go to 6200 RPM. I really don't want to reduce my fans life and care for it.
It's not just about gaming but also rendering on Adobe After Effects.
I am a game developer, cg and vfx artist on very good level. I do render heavy files.
So I am ready to get a Mac Pro with the configuration of
    Quad-core (standard configuration)
    One 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon W3565 processor
8MB of fully shared L3 cache per processor
Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz
Hyper-Threading technology for up to 8 virtual cores
But before I purchase a Mac Pro. I wanna know the tempreature levels of a mac pro while playing games like WoW , Deus Ex and etc.
I saw it on windows pc that tempreture goes till 65 to 70 during games and rendering. I wanna know about the Mac Pro.

They are a server grade processor.
they fans are huge and quiet.
A PC is still best suited for extreme gaming, SLI and customized.
And yes Xeon will hit 65-70*C though it is the GPU you have less control over and those as you know do get hot but it is safe to hit 80*C - the GTX 670 is actually very robust and runs cooler than older models and less watts.
HT is about threads, not really virtual cores as much as logical cores.
And MacBook Pro and any notebook is hard to cool, and they run HOTTER under Windows if you were gaming on yours.
Before you stress the system, just boost the fans ahead of time to proactive preventative and set them to say 1500 rpm which is enough, rarely if ever will it get to 2000 and the fans only run @ cool quiet 500-600 most of the time that is normal default. And processors usually in the 30's
HT can cause a core to 'jump' by 10-20*C very quickly but then drop as quickly.
I would buy the W3680 6-core 3.33 instead. You can buy the 4-core 2.8 for $1869 Apple Specialsl, $600 for 6-core. And of course then 3x8GB RAM or more (there are 16GB DIMM support but never of course do so from Apple).
    Mac Pro 2010 6-core 3.33GHz
    Refurbished 2.8 4-core $1899
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC560LL/A
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47917&processor=W3680&spec-codes=SLBV2
The GTX 570 or 670 are a nice DIY also for what you want to do.

  • Purchasing a Mac Pro

Sorry, but I was not sure where exactly to post this but I wanted to know if there was another site or place I can visit where I can purchase a Mac Pro rather than getting it from the Apple Store. There are a few things that I dont want that the Apple Store wont let me change. Any help would be greatfull.

Currenty a few old ones compared to todays standards. Games like Rainbow Six 3, Operation Flashpoint, Act of War and even older games like Rogue Spear and Starcraft. The newest one that I own that I REALLY want to play with great settings on is World in Conflict. I wanted to install the Boot Camp to play some PC games, but I also browsed the Wikipedia site and found that a few of the games I play on the PC works on the Mac so most likely only a few games I will be playing on Boot Camp, plus my wife prefers Windows (side note, I most likely will get her a cheap laptop from WalMart someday). On the Mac side some of the games that have been ported to the Mac format and other misc task like minor video editing and web browsing. Not just that, I love the OS on the Mac. It feels 10X more stable than a Windows OS and I like the feel and ease of use on it. Thats why I still have my old B&W.
Along the lines of the other Macs, I was thinking while I was at work of using a G4 duel processor that goes up to 1.5 to 2 Ghz. Would that cost too much or not be worth it? If I remember right the G4 Graphite model had that ability with numorous upgrade options.

i just purchased a mac pro and i wanted to know if they bring microsoft installed already or would i have to purchase it?

You would have to purchase Microsoft Office for the Mac, if you want genuine Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. There are other less costly compatible and work-alike products available.
To install Microsoft Windows, you need to buy Microsoft Windows software, run BootCamp software and partition your Boot Drive, then install Microsoft Windows in its own disk partition, which is a fairly complex process. Then, while running Windows, Install whatever other Windows programs you would like to run. None of this is necessary to simply read and write Microsoft Word or Excel documents.
There are other compatibility options that you may find adequate for other Windows programs. What do you want to run in Windows?

  • Running Photoshop CS 6 on my Windows 7 desktop and now I just purchased a Mac Pro laptop

    I just purchased
a Mac Pro laptop and would like to run Photoshop CS 6
I currently am using my desktop which is Windows 7 what is the best way to purchase a license for my laptop

Photoshop CS6's perpetual license does not allow you to run on both operating systems.
You could subscribe to this, which DOES support your running the software on both platforms:

Bad idea. There are no supported iPhone carriers in Iceland, thus some features may or may not work. Further, there will be no warranty or support for a US purchased iPhone in Iceland...your friend will be on their own. If you still want to go down this road, make sure you purchase an officially unlocked iPhone(GSM model) directly from Apple.

I own the Mac Pro Desktop with the older OS X 10.5.8. Can I upgrade to a newer version? Will it affect my docs etc currently stored on hard drive's? How much will this cost?

If you have a 2006 or 2007 model you can upgrade it to Lion - 10.7.x. If it's a 2008 or later model you can upgrade to the current version of Mountain Lion. Doing so requires Snow Leopard 10.6.8:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
Back up your current system to an external drive or to an available internal drive by making a bootable clone:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

I purchased Quick time pro, went through the steps above to install.
When I go to save the video save is grayed out and it says I need to purchase quicktime pro.

Quicktime Pro will do full screen streaming videos that are compatible with Quicktime installed Codecs. If the video of the Olympics on the website has a specific URL to go straight to the video, then yes, you can call upon it with Quicktime Pro's player and then watch it fullscreen.
If the video of the Olympics was embedded such a way that you can't find the direct link to the video, then the limitation is how the webpage is designed. Thanks to Flip4Mac, there is now also a Windows Media codec you can install for Quicktime as well:
    http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm
Although some video software like Elgato's EyeTV don't work with it yet. If you are using Elgato's software, don't download it, and rather download Windows Media Player for Mac OS X:
    http://tinyurl.com/26pxg
if the video is in Windows Media.
If the video is in Realplayer, click on the Realplayer Free button on the upper right corner of:
    http://www.real.com/player/?src=realaudio
You can enter a dummy address and password if you don't want Real's offers.
If it is still a question of not being able to determine the true link to the video, try using different Mac web browsers to see what result you get:

It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.
