Purchasing a PowerBook overseas

I'm currently stationed overseas in Japan. I'm looking to upgrade from my old PB and I'm not 100% sure that anything I buy from a local Apple store or vendor will be good to go once I return to the States.
Can any one point the way or give testimonials?
Thanks!

Hi again,
The speed increase was with the addition of the extra 1Gig Ram, for both PB's. Since they are running Panther and Tiger, it's tough to call. I do notice that Tiger seems to use memory better (less for the same load) then Panther does, but only about 50MB to 100MB difference. For me, they are both peppy! One would almost have to run them side-by-side with the same OSX doing the same program in order to see if there is much difference, and if the speed of the chip is the determining factor (sometimes it is, sometimes it's not), it would be a "slight" increase. The speed of the hard drive, the extra Ram, how much is going in the background, and a host of other maintenance items, all determine how fast the computer is. In Theory, if it is well maintained, and not overloaded with background tasks or Widgets, the 1.67 GHz should be faster then the 1.5 GHz in the same condition.
And your concern about a lemon is well taken. That condition would of maybe showed up already, if it was going to. And if not, there are ways to abuse the machine beyond what it was made for that can cause it. I'd be more concerned with getting a pampered computer, then worry about the lemon factor... considering these are '05 - '06 models.

I want to purchase a powerbook that will run a music program like MOTU or Pro Tools as well as run Final Cut Pro without being sluggish...any help?

The only way that would work out is if you ran exactly the versions that were made for old PowerBooks. Anything newer may require Intel and not run, or will strain the poor old G4 CPU.
Your needs have to be modest, too, because the problem with older music and video software is that they are not current as far as formats and codecs for the Web. If you want to output H.264, the current standard for YouTube/Flash video, older software may not support it, and in addition, H.264 is processor-intensive and is tailor-made for today's multi-core, 2+ GHz processors. It will overwhelm a G4. A PowerBook G4 can barely play YouTube videos.
More perspective: The PowerBooks worked great for miniDV format editing. In other words, 480i SD/standard definition video in use from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. If that is all you want to do, edit tape from an old miniDV camera to SD output, then OK.
But if you want to edit today's HD video, whether 720p from a snapshot camera/iPhone 4 or 1080p from a DSLR, the PowerBook and the software for it will either not recognize AVCHD/H.264, or it will slow the PowerBook to a dead crawl.
I'm in agreement with the above: Intel Macs have been out for so many years that getting a used one is a much better deal than a dead-end PowerBook. And I loved (still love) my PowerBooks.

  • Using my Powerbook Overseas

I will be studying in the UK for about a year. I purchased the Apple travel adapters, but I am unsure whether it is still safe to plug my Powerbook into the wall with only the adapter. Does anyone have any knowledge in this area? Can the powerblock permit the amount of voltage in the UK?

Here is what is in an Apple knowledge base article:
Question 15: I will be travelling overseas and will be taking my PowerBook computer with me. Which adapters do I need for the power and modem?
Answer: The PowerBook computers can use 115 V and 230 V AC. You will need a power prong adaptor available at many electronic and travel retailers. Review the following technical document for more details. Document 129: "World Power Differences Can Limit International Product Usage"
It looks as if will work just fine with the adapters.

  • I recently purchased a powerbook 1400c/133 at a yard sale and need to know where to find a 24v,1.9a adapter to get it started?

I recently purchased a macintosh powerbook 1400c/133 at a yard sale and was wondering where i could get a 24volt,1.9a adapter to get it started?

    Sandy,
If you enjoy yard sale shopping you should also look for computer recyclers in your area.  The ebay power supply Jeff pointed to is a good price and has free shipping. The free shipping makes it nice because you do not have to leave home to get it.  On the otherhand, recyclers may have other accesories and spare parts all in one location.  They will often match or beat the price of an online source.  Happy hunting.  That is a very capable computer for its day.

  • Purchasing apps while overseas

I'm an American with an account at the US iTunes Store and an American credit card. I'm bringing my 2nd gen Touch to Turkey. Will I be able to buy and update apps if I'm connected via public wifi?

Hard to say for sure. The terms of use of the iTunes Store say that you agree not to attempt to use the Store from outside of the applicable country (in your case, from outside of the US) and there have been some indications that Apple has implemented technological means to enforce that restriction. So I would suggest you not count on it working and that you should purchase/update any apps before you head overseas.

  • Purchasing a Powerbook

I have the opportunity to purchase a reconditioned 15" 1.67GHz Powerbook G4 with 1GB of DDR2 and 128MB video card, and a 80GB hard drive. Its being offered at a decent price too. Before I purchase it though I would like some opinions on this notebooks quality. I've been hearing allot about apparent defects in 15" and 1.67GHz Powerbook's.
I've heard allot about lower DIMM slot and GPU failure with the 1.67GHz Powerbook's, but I've read nothing that clarifies whether or not these defects are limited to the DDR1 Models or all 1.67's. I also have the opportunity to buy a 17" Powerbook thats clocked in at 1.5GHz for around the same price as the 15", would this be the safer choice?
P.S. I don't want anyone telling me to go buy a Macbook because not only do I not have the funds, but I also don't like Intel;)

  • Looking to purchase a Powerbook

Looking for suggestions. My son would like to get a Powerbook. He is not a high end user. Internet, games, fun stuff. Looking to buy a used one initially to see how much he uses and then maybe upgrade him to the latest and greatest in the future. I am not familiar with Powerbooks at all from a performance standpoint. Can anyone help with specs that I should look for, mainly minimums in processor, memory, disk size and monitor size or a suggestion that maybe I need to look at something newer than the PowerBook G4. There are a few on ebay in the local ads, but want to make sure I get one that is power enough for him. Thank you for your help.

Well, you have a myriad of options:
Basic stuff? You can try an old "Pismo" PowerBook with a G4 upgrade card in it. Good for internet, word processing, but not intense gaming. Just "fun" gaming. Even a stock G3 might do. Max the RAM to 1GB, get at least a G3 500MHz or the G4 550MHz third party upgrade installed in it already, and you can upgrade different things with its expansion bays galore! Screen resolution is 1024x768.
(In fact, let's jump the gun here right now-- if he's looking for gaming, the best bet is Intel-based Macs since current games require it, as far as the "high-end" games from EA, Electronic Arts. Fun games, those can be done on a G3 or G4 PowerBook).
You can up the ante, but if so, you'd best go further. You can go for a Titanium PowerBook G4 with at least a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and a SuperDrive (or at least a Combo Drive). But better to go for the Aluminum line. These have a 1280x854 resolution, and earlier versions with lower processors were even lesser resolution.
The fun one, in my opinion, is the 12-inch PowerBook G4. Compact and light and portable. Screen resolution at 1024x768, and processors from 867MHz to 1.5GHz with Combo Drive or Superdrive.
The 15-inch PowerBook G4 (aluminum) comes anywhere from 1GHz to 1.67GHz (early version) with 1280x854 screen, max RAM at 2GB, and either Combo Drive or Superdrive. These have an expansion slot in the PCMCIA cardbus whereas the 12-inch does not.
Then there's the special 1.67GHz Double-Layer SD model which has a high-res screen of 1440x960 with a double layer Superdrive and faster RAM (PC-4200) which also maxes at 2GB.
The 17-inch PowerBook G4 is way too big, but still portable and also matches the processors of its immediate sibling, the 15-inch. Screen resolution is much higher as well and same with the RAM.
Hard drives these days, no smaller than 80GB, but better if 120GB and above (250GB maximum). Speed should be at 5400RPMs, but you can go as high as 7200RPMs but it caps out at 100GB. A 15-inch display is optimal. 1GB RAM is the minimum best. 512MB is bare minimum. 2GB RAM is better. Minimum processor speed, I'd say no lower than 1GHz, best at 1.5GHz, but better at 1.67GHz, the highest possible G4 chip in a PowerBook.
You can also get some refurbished MacBooks at the Apple Store online for $799 (while supplies last... they come and go). That would be a great deal too. PowerBook G4s also go for $500 to $700 on eBay for the mid-range models, while the high-end models go for $700 to $1000. So you can see how well the PowerBooks still fare these days.
Maybe if you outlined what your son is looking for exactly, then I can pinpoint a better suggestion based on my experience.

  • Is there a way to check the date i purchased my powerbook G4?

    cant exactly remember/.

Unless you registered with Applecare when you bought it, there's nothing from Apple online to verify the date bought. It's possible you could contact your local Apple store or Apple Customer Service to ask if they could tell you. Or, if you paid by check or credit card, go find those records.

  • Powerbook purchase - does where I purchase matter?

    Hello,
I will be purchasing a new powerbook in a few days.
My question is this: what difference does it make, if any, if I purchase the powerbook from an Apple Store, Apple on line, or an Apple retailer (apple authorized reseller)? In order of lowest to highest price are:
    1. Apple retailer -- $150 rebate (free shipping & no tax)
    2. Apple on line -- education discount plus coupon
    3. Apple Store -- education discout but no coupon
I have been reading the threads here -- am I correct in understanding that I will get more service if I encounter problems if I have purchased the powerbook directly from an Apple store?
My budget is tight, but I am new to mac (an experienced windows user). I will be using software to transfer my files and doubt I will need assistance, but should I find something wrong with the powerbook, I'd like to resolve the issue(s) as simply as possible, even if it means spending a bit more at the onset. Oh, and yes, I will be purchasing Applecare.
    Thanks in advance,
    LJW

Main difference seems to be return policy and flexibility - Some people have said Amazon have a generous return policy, and Apple allow you 14 days or so - some other retailers don't, but repairs etc are still handled by Apple and Applecare, so after the first 14 days it's a moot point.
You could try calling the Apple Store and seeing if they'll do a price match with the retailer. Also, if you determine that return policy is the only difference, check with your credit card company - as they often offer extra protection to consumers that most people don't realise.
Welcome to the Apple Club, you'll really enjoy it. BUT - take a good hour or so to work out how it works and what the structure of OSX is - it will save you a lot of frustration later if you learn how it works at the start - file structure and the way applications are "installed" are the two biggest differences (much better) - ask here for advice. If you get to a point where you think something is worse than windows, check here, you may just be making a mistake.
    Anyway, best of luck.

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport

We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.
    Tks

    Tim,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role.

  • Unable to Install OS 10.2 (Jaguar) or OS 10.3 (Panther) on PowerBook G4

I was having issues with my PowerBook G4 Titanium (667 MHz) running OS 10.3 (Panther), see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5846471#5846471, so I zeroed and erased the harddrive before installing the original operating system, OS 10.1 (Puma). Using the Software Update feature, I updated to OS 10.1.5, verified/repaired permissions and the harddrive, and then updated firmware before proceeding to install OS 10.2 (Jaguar) using a full retail upgrade disk. The installation produced a kernel panic in the final stages, so I repeated the process from the beginning (zeroed and erased the harddrive, etc.). The second go-around, the installation hung up in the final stages (with 8 minutes to go, which went on for a good hour), until I received an Unexpected Error. (Exit Code 0). I restarted the computer while holding down the Option key to select the original OS 10.1 startup disk, and now my laptop starts up with the smiling mac icon and a crude black-and-white spinning sun. I used the Disk Utility feature to verify/repair permissions and the harddrive, but ejecting the Installation CD and attempting to start up still displays the smiling mac and crude sun.
I suspect the harddrive itself may be defective (at least that's what started this whole chain of events), but the Disk Utility verifies the harddrive. If it's not the harddrive (how else can I tell?), is there something else that may be impeding installation of OS 10.2?
My OS 10.3 is an upgrade CD, not a full retail installation DVD, so I am reluctant to try and jump from the original OS (10.1) to 10.3 without first installing 10.2. Or, is that possible?
Would I be able to install OS 10.2 using the full retail CD, or do I have to install the original, base OS (10.1) first?
I appreciate any advice the forum is willing to offer.

I have 1024 MB of RAM in the form of two (2) 512 MB chips which I installed shortly after purchasing my PowerBook G4 new some years ago (2002?).
In the event you can decipher the following, which I suspect you can, I am attaching both the finder.crash.log and pbs.crash.log, which I opened from the Console, as well as the Kernel Panic Log, which I opened in Apple System Profiler.

Interestingly enough, I hadn't suspected the RAM. I always thought it was the hard drive going out on me (which it may still be).
I ran an Extended Test using my Apple Hardware Test CD and it revealed the following error code: mem_2/4
I verified that the RAM shows up in my System Profile in Apple System Profiler. Is it possible one or both of the RAM chips is going bad? Is it possible that the built-in RAM is going bad?
Do you recommend I remove one or both of the RAM chips and then run the hardware test again? Are there memory tests other than the Apple Hardware Test CD that may be able to better pinpoint the problem?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Battery exchange program: is proof of purchase really needed?!

I own Apple PowerBook G4 and my battery falls under this exchange program.
I'm from Russia but purchased my notebook in the USA.
On Apple Support website you write that only my computer serial number and battery serial number needed to participate in this exchange program.
I contacted Apple Distributors here in Russia (www.apple.ru, www.deepapple.com) about participating in this exchange program. But alongside with these two serial numbers they ask me for "proof of purchase" otherwise they refuse to exchange my battery.
Why is it so? Why I don't need that "proof of purchase" in the USA and in other countries listed, but need it in Russia? Why 2 serial numbers, the notebook itself, the original PowerBook box with documents package are not enough to exchange my battery?
Not so long ago I've noticed that my battery changed its shape and color but didn't know why it happened. After reading about this problem and the exchange program on Apple Support website I'm afraid to continue using my Apple computer and I am refused to exchange the battery.
What have I to do? Please help!
Apple PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Apple iPod mini 4GB Green

    Hi,
I live in the US, also where I purchased my PowerBook G4 12". When I received my replacement battery it did not fit, and when I called Apple about they asked me for a purchase date and told me that because I bought my machine from MacMall it would have to be registered with Apple. Now I have to fax AND email them an invoice proving that I purchased it just to get a SECOND replacement battery.
I don't know why a SN of both machine and battery isn't sufficient, except that maybe they want to know that you actually purchased the machine, not bought it from someone else (maybe the warranty doesn't transfer?) or that it's not stolen?

  • Hooking up Mac Powerbook to existing wireless connection

I have just purchased a powerbook and airport extreme base station. Currently my roommates have a wireless LAN connected through a dell desktop.
    1) Can I simply hook up to the LAN through the existing wireless router or will the current router need to be switched and replaced by my airport extreme?
    2) If I need to switch to the airport extreme, will my roommates laptops and the dell pc be able to connect using the airport?
    Thanks.

    Yes

  • Wondering if linked ram is OK for my Powerbook G4 12"

I cannot agree more here. I recently purchased a PowerBook G4/1.5 from a pretty repultable mac resaler that came with 2 hodge-podge 512mb chips in it that would only see 512 no matter what I did to swap them around.
Biting the bullet, I went over to OWC and purchased a 2 gig upgrade kit for around $66.00 +shipping, a few days wait, a 10 minute install later and smooth sailing on my PowerBook!
Good call on doing your homework and follow-up's on the forums.

  • Printer on Powerbook + Software questions

    Hi there!
I'm new to these boards as well as new to Apple. I have just purchased a Powerbook 15" and have some questions.
I have an hp deskjet printer...would I be able to hook my powerbook to that? Or are there specific apple friemdly printers I can purchase? Its nothing fancy, just some essays for school and resumes.
Also...when I ordered my Appple I didn't include any "software"...like iworks. Will my powerbook contain a word processing program? Or do I have to purchase office software?
One last question.... What is the easiest way to transfer music, photo and word documents from my PC to my new powerbook? Will they be recognized?
Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

    Hello.
--with my new PB, my HP deskjet 960 works great. The PB had the drivers already installed.
--you can get a student discount to purchase Office 2004 for Mac if you don't want to purchase iWorks. Your PB will have a trial verson of iWorks on it to try out. You can also use Simple Text, but the formatting doesn't always hold up in a MS Word environment.
--See this Knowledge Base article for ways to transfer files.
Welcome to the world of Macs!
    Regards.
