Purchasing a used I-Book G4

I'm told that these machines will be obsolete in 6 mths to a year and won't be able to open certain websites and will be slow to surf the net & send e-mail. Please advise

John,
Thanks for your response. Actually I'm only a Mac user & can't stand PC's. We use high end Macs for all of our graphic art needs. We are in the printing industry & graphic design. The reason I asked the question is my wife wants to purchase a $500 new Dell laptop to use only for Word documents, sending e-mail & surfing the internet. A good friend of mine suggested I go to E-bay and buy her a used I-Book for $350 - $500. That's about all I really wanted to spend. I'd rather her have a couple of year old Mac than a brand new Dell any day. The problem is a person who does service for only Mac equipment in my area on companies with one Mac to 25 Macs & servers and everything else in between suggests I not purchase the "OLD" I-Book. He says that with the new "Java" scripts coming out that the I-Book would need to at least have a 1.0 GHZ processor and 1 gig of ram in order to run efficiently. In 6 - 12 mths she may have trouble opening some websites. He claims that by the time I buy the machine off e-bay and spend the money to upgrade the ram, the operating system maybe and who knows what else like a power cord, the money spent doesn't justify the item purchased. For a few hundred dollars more I can buy a refurb MacPro from Apple. Just looking for someone else's opinion!!!!

    Hello Halfback71,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.
    Best of luck,

Open the App Store application - either from the Apple menu or in your Applications folder.
If you want to purchase apps other than those from the App Store, you'll just have to Google for the website.

  • Purchased used Mac Book pro

Just bought a used Mac Book pro and the hard drive has been wiped.  Tried to recover over internet but Apple ID not associated with OS X purchase.  I purchased OS X Mountain Lion and received proof of purchase.  Tried restore again and still fails.  I do not have a computer with OS X installed.  I have an ipad and iPhone.  How do I associate my recent OS X purchase to my Apple ID so I can restore the Mac book pro?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • I have a desktop pc with iTunes. I just purchased a mac air book. Can I sync all of my devices, iPhone, iPod, iPad, to both computers or do I have to pick one. I would like to have iTunes on my mac, but I'm afraid I will run out of hard drive space.

I have a desktop pc with itunes. I just purchased a Mac Air book.  Can I sync my devices, iphone, ipod, ipad, to both computers. Or do I have to pick one? I would like to have itunes on my mac, but i am afraid I will run out of hard disk space. Do I need to set up a seperate account on my Mac so I can load some music on it if I plan to keep my devices synced to my PC?  Would it be possible to sync only my Iphone to my Mac?

To get that much storage, you need to look to professional online services.  Pro-level hosting accounts may offer you that much (well, many will offer as much storage as you are prepared to pay for), or Amazon professional cloud services.  You could also store the files on a home machine and pay for a professional hosting service so you could stream them over your own account (assuming your ISP connection and agreement allows for the bandwidth used).  You would still need to deal with the issue of finding an app for the iPad that supported avi streaming.

  • I already have a apple ID for my iphone5. And recently I have purchased a new mac book pro.

I already have a apple ID for my iphone5. And recently I have purchased a new mac book pro.
    My questions are that
1: Should I use a existing apple ID or create a new one?
2: If using my existing apple ID, then will there be any issue at later stages?
3: How will I be able to share the data between my existing iphone5 & new mac book?
4: Or will it be better to create a new apple ID for my newly purchase mac book pro?
    Please suggest?

Use the existing Apple ID, so you can sync your data between your phone and your Mac.
    No.
iCloud does the job for you. Both your iPhone and your Mac should have asked you to enable it during their first setup. See -> http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
You do not have to create a new Apple ID for your MacBook Pro. If you do that, you may have problems syncing your purchases.

I am going to purchase the latest Mac Book Pro. How do I transfer data from my very old Macbook running OS 10.4?

You may want to use the Migration Assistant, which appears the first time you start up the new machine during setup, and also is available later (it is found in /Applications/Utilities.) Note that if you are running 10.4.x on the old MacBook both machines need to use FireWire to do this, but the late 2006 MacBook has that. You will need a special 4 pin to 6 pin FireWire adapter cable, as the FireWire ports on the newest MacBook Pros are different.

  • Have just purchased a new mac book pro, am now having issues syncing my apps to my new mac?

Have just purchased a new mac book pro, am now having issues syncing my apps to my new mac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.
Until then, you can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

Is the MBP properly grounded?  Are you using the three prong plug?  If not, do so and your problems may disappear.  If not, do what SwankPeRFection suggests.
    Ciao.

  • IPhoto wont let me purchase. The 'buy book' icon is not clickable.

I made an awesome calendar and album and iPhoto for Xmas which I must purchase ASAP and it wont let me purchase. The 'buy book' icon is not clickable. What do I do and how can I buy my items?

Sorry IGrebe... you'll just have to check it AGAIN!!!
I just spent ANOTHER 7 hours on this thing... in the end it was a single full-page photo that SHOULD have had a solid colored background checked IN THE "BACKGROUND" LIST, but instead it had the palm-tree grey background checked (even though that makes more sense logically to me...) and it stopped everything cold. SO WHAT I NEEDED WAS A SOLID COLOR, even though the lay-out for a single picture shows a grey background...
Let's face it, Apple has some work to do--but in the meantime, so do the users. I had a 28 page book ready a month ago and couldn't get it to work...called Apple Support but that wasn't much use... redid the whole thing with the internet suggestion to put the full-page pictures in LAST but in the end, had to wait to get back at it--redid it a third time --so in all this "quick album" took about 16 hours!! I tried all the on-line suggestions and finally it was changing everything in my full-page background pictures as suggested and checking and re-checking, changing and re-changing... bummer for IGrebe who has 40 pages... it's rather like looking for a needle in a haystack. I felt exactly the way you did... I'd presented the way I wanted it and didn't want to change it.... but I had to be willing to rethink everything, spend hours to make this "simple program" function the way it says it should, and go to bed at 5 a.m. after finally getting this rotten apple to work!
Oh, and when I found the problem, I went back and changed my other pages back to original form ONE AT A TIME to make sure I could still order the book. This works if you're like me and have already 2 or 3 copies of your book so you can use one as a reference. A good memory would solve that issue, but who remembers at 4 in the morning?
    Good luck!

  • Sync Fonts (using Font Book) with other computers

Just purchased a new Intel iMac. Is there any method used to sync all my fonts from 3 other macs used at my studio. I would like to use Font Book and make it as easy as possible.
I use Photoshop CS2 and InDesign CS and I am sure they came with fonts loaded in both of those programs (at least I ASSUME they do...).
I want to sync the fonts so that if I bring up a photoshop file (or indesign file) that was created on one computer to another I don't get the message that I am 'missing fonts'.
Anyone know how to do this???

It's not clear what you're asking about. There no fonts button to push. However, there is a preference setting for automatic font activation. AFAIK, font book is a font management and validation tool. If the fonts are located in /Library/Fonts/, then they should be available for all users.

  • HT4059 Have just purchased yet another i book that has mult an d how can i fix this

Have just purchased yet another i book that has multiple error message and blank pages how can I fix this

Try deleting the book from the bookshelf in your iBooks app and then re-download it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in it. If it re-downloads in the same state then use the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that book and use the 'Report a Problem' link.
Some people have had a problem with the 'report a problem' link (it's been taking people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) - if it does that to you then try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.
