Purchasing from another country's iTunes store

Hi,
I am based in Australia and use iTunes extensively to buy music. Some of the songs that I am after are not available on the Australia iTunes store, but are on the US site. Is there a (legal) way to purchase these songs?
Rael

Hi, Rael.
Is there a (legal) way to purchase these songs?
Unless you happen to have a residence and credit card billing address in the States, unfortunately there isn't.
The reason why has to do with the business part of the music business so, for a bit of insight into the present situation, let's have a look at to This Business of Music (10th Edition) (by M. William Krasilovsky and Sydney Shemel) :
The difficulty of establishing workable business models for digital files (...) extends to where they are sold and where they are played. This is the issue of territoriality, and it is an illustration of how the Internet makes it necessary to reexamine basic assumptions that have been taken for granted (...).
(....) In the music business the primary problem is that copyrights are national and therefore specific rights are tied to national laws and the interpretations of national courts.
(.... T)hough we can one day hope to see the development of common standards with respect to copyright, the fact that the music business is building upon a history of nation-specific contractual relationships means that the goal of universal international standards is not, for the forseeable future, a practical one.
(...) Adding to the difficulty (...) the copyrights themselves may have been assigned to different companies in different territories. The best hope for a cleaner start and a simpler future is worldwide recognition that digital uses are in fact - and should be in law - totally new.

  • Cannot purchase from another country's iTunes....

I know we cannot purchase from another country's iTunes, but how about if someone in that country gifted songs to us? For example, my wife here in the U.S. wants stuff from the Japanese iTunes store but can't buy it; can her sister in Japan "gift this song" to her? Thanks.

No, you can only successfully gift to people who are in the same country as yourself - the gifting may appear to go though, but your wife won't be able to redeem it

  • Buying from another country's itunes store?

Why can't I buy music on the US itunes store? When I try to, I get a message saying I'm only authorized to buy from the French store (I live in France); Thanks for help.

In order to purchase from a particular country's store, you must have a credit card with a valid mailing address within that country. Legal stuff...

  • Can I purchase from two country's iTune stores?

I live in both China and the US. Is it possible to purchase software and APPs from both iTunes stores (US and China) to use on my computer and devices? Do I need two IDs or can I use one?

Yes, but you will need two different Apple IDs so you can have two different iTunes Store accounts, one in each country. You will also need credit cards or other appropriate payment methods issues in each country.

  • HT201389 Update apps purchased in another country's App Store?

Will I be able to update apps purchased in another country's App Store?

I already have this mess. No you will not. Unless you change back to the country that you bought the app from. Oh, but then you run into the problem that you need a valid address and payment method from that country.
So no, if you move to another country, Apple will steal all your apps.

  • Buy a song from another country's itunes

I'm an American currently in Australia and I would like to buy a song that is not offered in the US itunes store but is for the Australian itunes store. I am trying to download it but itunes says it is unavailable to me. I am in Australia, so why can't I buy it from the Australian store? What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks

I only want one song so if I were to buy an itunes gift card here in Australia, when I return to the US I wouldn't be able to use it in the US itunes store?
Correct. Your credit balance would not be transferrable to another country's iTunes Store, and you would not (by the terms of use) be able to continue to use the Australian iTunes Store. So it's probably not practical for a single song. Either get someone with an Australian iTunes Store account to gift you the song, or pick it up on CD (which is expensive for a single song, but less expensive than buying an entire gift card for just one track).
    Regards.

  • Help with purchasing with from another country's Music Store

I'm trying to buy some song from the German iTunes Music Store but iTunes won't let me because my credit card isn't a German credit card. I don't see why this is a problem because the artist and Apple are still going to get money from my purcashe, just from a different country. Any suggestions on the best way to buy a song from the German Music Store?

its the record companies at fault companies like warner and emi in the uk dont want you to buy music from warner in the US or emi in germany as it is lost revenue to that business unit.. record companies are not benevolent suppliers of art they are capitalists and like to accrue money, the whole issue of the music lovers desire for global trading of music has long frustrated them and hence why hefty prices are paid for music imports.. this issue was what frustrated Apple's desire to produce the euro itunes store and the segmenting of the store by country was one of the things it had to do to get the labels to agree to let them have music to sell. The online music sales phenomenon has highlighted the despicable business tactics of the record labels and the EU are i believe investigating them and their shady practises....

  • Getting OTA updates and App store purchases from another country

    Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a Palm Pre in Germany (where I live at the moment), but I'm moving to Israel in a couple of months.  My cellphone carrier in Israel will probably be Cellcom.  Will it be possible for me to receive these OTA updates? And will I be able to purchase Apps while I'm there?
    Thanks,

Same question. I moved from the Macau store to the French store. All my apps and music don't appear in 'purchased' in the iTunes Store and the Mac App Store. I guess it's alright for the apps because I can see what I have in my library, but it's a bit more annoying for the Mac App Store. I was planning to buy an iMac and of course connect to the Stores using my apple id, then download all the apps on the new computer but it seems it's not gonna make it.

  • Buying tunes from another nation's itunes store?

I wanted to buy some japanese music but I got an error saying my account was not able to buy music from that store and that I was being directed to the US store. Is it because I use paypal? do i need a credit card?

buying tunes from a another country should be allowed because in the Australian one you cant download the movies or TV shows and it should not matter about the cross boarder because if it did then why can we access websites in other countries I mean c'mon I want to buy south park and scrubs for my ipod I recommend we vote for cross international transfer of data regarding this I just don’t want to miss out on the services anyway that’s my opinion anyway

  • Can I purchase from another iTunes country store?

    Hi -
Just to clarify, I'm located in Sweden and the swedish iTunes store are not that impressive (no movies, tv-series etc).
Is there no possibility for me to purchase movies or tv-series from ex US iTunes......?

I'm confused. I live in the US. The US store does not sell what I want. The UK store does. I do not have a UK address. How do I purchase content from the UK store? I tried to set up a new account in the UK store but I have to live in the UK to do this. Why can't I purchase from any store i wish?
This has been covered here literally dozens of times, but once again: the content owners do not allow cross-border sales from any of the legal download stores. You must therefore have legal residence in the country of the iTunes Store you wish to use. So in order to buy from another country's iTunes Store, you must (as proof of residence) have either:
    a) a credit card issued by a bank in that country with a billing address also in that country, or
    b) a mailing address for your residence in that country and a gift certificate or a prepaid card that was bought in that country.
If you cannot fulfill one of these two sets of conditions, you will not be able to purchase from any given country's iTMS.
This, again, is due to restrictions placed on Apple by the record companies and other rights holders (who are often completely different from country to country and so all require their own individual negotiations and contracts), not by Apple's choice.

  • Buying from US store from another country?

Is that possible? If so, what might i be doing wrong, when i click to buy something i just get redirected to my national store which apparently doesn't have what i want. Isn't the internet supposed to bridge gaps or something...?
