Purchasing iMac in Japan

I'm living in Japan for the next couple years, and thinking about making the switch.
I know that OS X has selectable languages, and that I can buy a US keyboard layout, but I've got a few other questions.
Are the rest of the Apple apps similarly switchable (iApps, Front Row)? Or are there seperate Japanese versions I should avoid.
Are there any other gotchas?

Hi Teman-
I purchased my iMac G5 20" iSight direct from a local Japanese electronics shop.
The first time you start it, it will ask you which language you would like to use.
For the iLife applications- iTunes, iDVD, iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, if you set your profile to use English, the menus, help, controls will all be in English. If your profile is set to Japanese, then everything will appear in Japanese.
The cool thing about this is that my wife's profile is in Japanese, and mine is in English. When we switch between ourselves, she gets to use iLife apps in Japanese, and I can keep working in English.
Front Row is the same- her profile is set for Japanese, so when she is logged in, and grabs the remote control, Front Row menus and interface pop up in Japanese. When I am logged in, and grab the remote, I get it all in English.
iWork is the same- English menus and interface for me, Japanese for her. iCal, mail, safari, all of the OS elements automatically appear in English or Japanese, depending on the language settings.
As for Appleworks, you can install the English version from the supplied DVD System disk. You can also the Japanese version of Classic, or the English version- both versions are on disk 2 of the supplied DVD system disks.
Also, although Apple doesn't go out of the way to tell you, the English version of Quicken and the English version of World Fact Book are located on Disk 1 as well- which makes the Japanese retail package identical to the US Package, in terms of bundled 'goodies'.
Keep in mind that bilingual 'friendliness' is true for the Apple branded aps. Other applications, most notibly Microsoft Office for Mac, may NOT have this bilingual friendliness.
If you purchase the Japanese version of MS Office for Mac, and install it, it WILL work if your language choice is English, but all menus and controls will appear in Japanese- NOT in English.
Likewise, the English version of MS Office is in English, even when my wife is logged in with Japanese set as her language.
On the bright side, unlike Windows XP, which shows garbled characters on screen when running Japanese programs in an English OS, OS X never has a problem with showing Japanese on your screen, even if your language display is set to English. Of course, if you can't read Japanese, this doesn't help much.
Lets see... other things...
In the box, if you order retal from other than Apple, all of the hardcopy manuals are in Japanese of course. However, the English version of all manuals are on your hard disk in PDF form.
You can buy the Japanese retail packages of AppleCare and/or .Mac. Although everything in the box is written in Japanese, when you register online for these services, you can do so in English.
It came standard with a wired Japanese keyboard, but of course you can order direct from Apple.jp, and it can come bundled with a wired or wireless English keyboard. The Japanese keyboard has some advantages (most importantly a convenient Eigo and Kana key), and unlike many other Japanese keyboards, the space bar is nearly as large as it ought to be. If you will be doing any Japanese typing, I would recommend it.
Another advantage is that by not buying direct from Apple.jp, you can usually get a slightly better deal- I ended up saving about 20,000 yen by buying the iMac bundled with AppleCare through an electronics store, instead of direct from Apple.
Good luck on your purchase

IS IT OK that a newly purchased  iMac -intel Lion- gets So HOT That it smells like Burnt Plastic,Not Warm but  Hot!!??.. Just only by using safari-reading mails or newspapers- And playing Radio with VLC??!!!!...Or i must throw it away before it explodes??!!...Since Not possible to contact direct Apple to replace it !!!!..-they send me automatically from one adress to the other And No reply!!.THANKS!!

I don't know where you live or what you're talking about being sent from one address to another.  Your iMac has a 90 day warranty with tech support and service, if needed.  Apple has toll-free phone numbers in the US.  You call that number, get to speak to a tech, give that person your computer's serial number and describe the problem.  I suspect that there are similar arrangements in other parts of the world.  That is "direct contact" with Apple.  Have you tried to do that where you live?  Wny are you trying to communicate in writing (by e-mail?)?  In addition, if you don't have Apple Care you should immediately purchase it if you're still eligible.  It'll extend your warranty to 3 full years.

Only the carrier to which it is locked can do it.  Contact them.

Pages 4.3 is the most recent, but no matter. If Pages cannot open it, there are many other programs that may be able to. Some of them are free.
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
Try TextEdit also. It is included in OS X.
If you are trying to open the document by double-clicking it, don't, since the Finder may be looking for a program that is no longer installed. Use Pages' File > Open... menu. The same recommendation applies to using any of the above alternatives - use their File > Open menu.
The least attractive alternative is to purchase Microsoft Word, but I have been completely Microsoft-free since updating to Lion.

Just purchased imac, how do I redeem osx mountain lion code? I only see an option to purchase when I go to app store.

I had gone to this link last night and was mailed the code. The email said to copy code and go to the app store to download the software. However when I click the mountain lion app the only option is to "buy". Is there a special link to redeem? What am I missing. Thxs.

  • First Mac Purchase - iMac i3 - Please Advise

Hello, I am very close to purchasing my first ever Mac, but I am unsure of which direction to take. I am debating between the iMac i3 - 21.5 inch base model with 8gb of ram, or the next model up. I know that the hard drive is double, the processor is a little bit faster, and the video card is better. I am hoping there are some Mac gurus who might help with some insight is this decision. I will be mainly using it for work, but also for some light gaming, nothing serious. Is the $250 worth the 3.20 i3, 1TB HD, and the better graphics card? Or, should I increase the ram on the base model from 4gb to 8gb? Any suggestions on above mentioned information or any other relevant information would be much appreciated, thanks.

Thank you all for your quick responses. As far as the first respons goes, I just do not know enough yet about the OSx applications, so I am really not sure yet what applications I may be using. However, I do edit/add new products to the web for the company I work for. It's primary used will be for work, but the web editing I do is nothing too crazy. Mainly just editing photos and writing the info in HTML.
In reference to the second response, that was the way I was leaning. I am unsure if I can convince my wife to go up to the i5 model though, ha. I do want to check out some games on I though, even though I have a ps3. I also may want to run Windows with the parallel program. I guess I'm just trying to make the most informed decision since I do not know a lot about the macs and which one is the best value.
The third response has almost convinced me now to go with the base model. The bottom line for me is $250 is not a huge deal, but $450(to go to the i5) is getting closer to being a big deal. To me, it seems like the faster processor and the graphics card are worth $250 and the hard drive is a bonus as well. I definitely liked the point of getting an external drive, but how much am I going to spend for a 500gb external drive? Will I be getting closer and closer to the original $250 difference I could have spent to go with the nicer model? Once again thank you for responding, and I hope to hear some more insightful thoughts to help me with my first Mac purchase, cheers.

  • IDVD missing on new purchased iMac 21"

    Hello;
is this normal that the iDVD software is not installed on a iMac 21" OS X Lion?
Can i get it through support call? Or is this purchasable option?
Or is there any other software available to burn iMovie content using the builtin DVD writer?
The dvd should be able to play in standard dvd player.
    with kind regards

Make a couple of phone calls.
iDVD is a “Must Have".   (Yes, it should be included.)
Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.
    800-692-7753
    800-275-2273
If you are still within your 15 day return period,  nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.
Most people report that by asking here:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    or here:   http://www.apple.com/contact/
they got a free copy of iDVD.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

  • New purchase - iMac i7 or Mac Pro Quad Core

I'm planning to purchase a new mac and most of the work i do revolves around Aperture. One option is the 27 inch iMac i7 and the other option is the 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem".
I'm hoping to get some advise on the speed aspects of both processors. Not so concerned about the expansion options and any advise or benchmarks on the speed of the processors.
    Cheers.

    Hi msa,
In my opinion the Mac Pro is a much better buy than an iMac. Much more flexibility for the future, and a real "workhorse"! If you buy an iMac, I am pretty sure that you will regret your decision in the long term.
If you have not already done so, then I recommend that you should read Lloyd Chambers very thorough review (31 pages) of the latest Mac Pros:

With particular emphasis on this page:

  • Purchased iMac used. can't access iPhoto since OS X 10.9.2 update

I purchased my iMac used in 2011.  I had alot of software already installed.  I've never had any problems until now.  I recently updated my iMac w/ the latest OS X Maverick 10.9.2 & since then it will not let me access iPhoto bc (You can't use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X, You have iPhoto 9.2).  It says I need to upgrade but when I try to it doesn't recognize my apple id/password bc it was purchased originally by someone else.  It does not give me the option to purchase, only upgrade.  Does anyone know how I can get around this?

I cannot open the iPhoto app to backup my files.  I'm afraid to just delete it.
You do not need iPhoto to backup your photos. Your photos are in the iPhoto library and not in the application. If you do not yet have a backup of your iPhoto library, open your Pictures folder and copy the iPhoto Library (the package with the "fan of pictures" icon) to an external drive. Do that first, just in case. It is safer to have a backup copy of the data before updating any application.
If I delete the app, will I lose all my pictures?
Deleting the iPhoto application from the Applications folder will not delete the iPhoto library with your photos. Just delete it from the Applications folder and than sign into the App Store with your AppleID and purchase the current iPhoto version.
