Purchasing my next iMac
I am in the process of configuring my next desktop computer. Currently, I am using a Mid 2007 24" iMac (4GB RAM [max] and 1TB HD) and am looking to replace it. My requirements are not too special. The one thing that I am constrained with on my current iMac is video work. I am not a heavy video editor, but I would like to become the next level (from noob) up. I have a GoPro camera that I enjoy capturing video with, but it is choppy on playback from my iMac. I also have thousands of photos and a ton of music. But neither of those are overly taxing. I also use all the standard office and internet type apps. I do not have any musical ability at all. I believe this may be my last 'regular' desktop with the pace and change of things (remember, my last iMac was from 2007).
So getting to my
Size
I love the size of the 24" and wish it still existed. I have decided on the 27" rather than the 21".
Chip
With the intent of future proofing (at least making it out of 2014), I will get the 3.5GHz i7.
RAM
Last one I bought, I updated via Crucial and saved a ton of money. Currently, Crucial 16GB is $172 and Apple is $200. I think I will go with the 16GB from Apple. Any reason to go to 32?
Storage
Here is the question.... 1TB Fusion, 3TB Fusion? Crucial 240GB SSD? If the goal is speed and future proofish, then what to choose?
Graphics
GTX780 4GB.... Will this help speed up video and video editing?
SuperDrive
Yea or Nay?
AppleCare
Yea or Nay?
Skip the NAS because the NAS mfg's don't keep their firmware up-to-date. The ramification is when you do a software update all of a sudden your NAS quits working so you're stuck. IMHO they're a good idea when they work but they always don't work well with OS X. You could buy an Apple Time Capsule which along with a router has a HD installed in it, the HD is designed to work as a Time Machine backup but it could be used as a NAS, in that case it would work fine.

I'm the owner of a MacBook Pro and an ancient QuickSilver machine, and I'm considering finally replacing the Quicksilver. I would like to replace it with a 27" iMac, but I recall hearing numerous stories about yellowing of the screen and receiving cracked screens when they were first released. After looking over some of the posts on this site I see folks posting about several other (what I would consider) unacceptable hardware behavior, so I would like to ask if it is now safe to purchase a 27" iMac or should I wait until the next generation come out?
Thanks for any insights, opinion, and feedback...I suggest buying one at an Apple Store or retailer and checking the unit out before leaving with it. There is a web page with a test pattern you can check for the yellowing issue.

I am a photographer looking to purchase a new iMac. Which one should I buy and what should I include in the package?, I am a photographer looking to purchase a new iMac. Which one should I buy and what should I include in the package?
In general most macs you buy are the same. If you will be doing quite a lot of editing of photos and videos, then the big things to look for are:
Processor - 2.8ish GHz Intel i7 4-core - is about the best I have head of thus far.
RAM - fairly easy to upgrade yourself, but 16GB is typically more than you will need for the next 5 years at least.
iLife is reasonably good software for editing media, but as a photographer, you may have your own prefered software
The good thing about Apple is that they don't sell ****** computers in general. They offer little in the way of customization of hardware which is both their strength and weakness. -
I recently purchased a used iMac and cannot load iPhoto and other apps?
I recently purchased a used iMac. It was wiped clean and has the newest version of Mac OSX installed.
When I go to the app store, it shows iPhoto and has an accept prompt next to it, though when i enter my apple id to accept, it says I cannot do that as it was previously accepted, obviously by original owner. It says i could purchase it, but there is no available prompt to purchase it.
Questions: Do i have to purchase? How do i go about doing that?
Thanks! If the machine was originally configured for Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or earlier you should have gotten the original DVDs, one of which had the iLife apps on it. If it came with Lion already pre-installed you can try Lion Recovery, OS X Lion: About but I doubt it will download the iLife apps for you. In short you probably have to buy them or get the original DVDs from the seller. Another option is to call AppleCare and for a nominal cost they will replace the original media. You can find their number by using the AppleCare Contact Info link.

I have just purchased a new iMac and this is all new to me as it is so different from my PC. I am trying to transfer my iTunes from my PC onto the iMac, I have got as far as pasting the itunes music folder onto the desktop but I cant seem to transfer that into iTunes on my iMac. Can anyone help me out with this?
See iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
BTW this list os for discussing the list itself. You'll get better response to questiosn you post if you post them to the correct list. I'll ask to have this moved to the iTunes list.

i have missing songs that i purchased on my old iphone. they are not in my purchased folder. but in itunes store when i look the song up, it has the purchased logo next to it.... but no way to download it
If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup. -

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs. -
I have just purchased a new iMac OS Xlion version 10.7.3 and I'd like to install Windows. I have a disc for XP but the Boot Camp Assistant manual only refers to Windows 7. Please does anyone know if it will it work with XP.?
Get a Virtual Macine software program, Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install XP in a virtual machine.
You can't install XP in a Boot Camp Partition with Lion or Mt Lion, only Win 7. -
I just purchased a new iMac with the latest iLife suite. As part of the migration process in setting up the new machine the 3Ivx video codec was brought onto the new machine as well as my old movies. When I tried opening the movies iMovie crashed and told me it had a problem with the 3IVX video codec, in doing some research I found that the 3IVX video codec created a problem so I deleted it and downloaded Perian 123. The Perian 123 works well with Quicktime but iMove does not now see my old movies. At this point I cannot open any of my movies. Can anyone help? Thanks
There also might be a more updated, compatible 3ivx codec you can install, or just try re-installing a newly downloaded version of of the same old codec: http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html
Otherwise download and install MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
In iMovie hold down CTRL and click on the clips that don't open. Choose Reveal in Finder. Convert those files by dragging them into the window of converter program, and save as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). That format is native to iMovie and will work perfectly. -
I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and only contains "purchased" music. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sinc my ipod with my account. How do I access my entire library? Thanks
Unless you subscribe to Match, you will have to transfer your non-iTunes stuff from your old computer:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you want to copy non-iTunes music off of your iPod (eg, if your old computer doesn't exist), you'll need to use a third party program. I don't know of any free ones anymore, but if you google, you can find several in the $19 range. -
Just purchased a new iMac and after transferring all info from my old iMac. Now when using iPhoto slideshow it displays the pictures in reverse order.
There's a bug in iPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks that affects slideshows played directly from an album. The slideshow will not play correctly if the photos have been sorted manually. Any other type of sort, date, rating, keyword or title, will play correctly.
If you need that manual sort of pictures for your slideshow create the slideshow in iPhoto's slideshow mode.

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive. I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac. I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern. May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure? Comments? Help?
If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

I just purchased a 24" iMac A1225 without a hard drive. Can I transfer the drive from my old 17" iMac, with OS 10.68 installed on it, or do I have to clone, migrate or reinstall?
HalAha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

I have deleted a song from my library and want to re-download it. When I access my purchased items in the iTunes store, the song has the 'purchased' button next to it and won't let me re-download. Any suggestions for things to try?
While you can redownload most past purchases without charge, you can't redownload movies without paying again. See Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

I have just purchased a new iMac and have uninstalled cs6 from my old iMac. Do I just install CS6 as normal or do I need a new code. My licence is for one user
Yes, just install as you normally would using the serial number you originally used.
You did not have to uninstall on the old machine - with your single user license you are allowed to have two activated installations. So feel free to reinstall it if those are the only two machine you plan to have it on and you'd like to have a backup installation.
