Purchasing new iMac 04/22/09 Questions

I want to purchase an iMac 24” this weekend but I am concerned about the issues with the video cards freezing the computer. Should I not buy one at all or purchase one with the NVIDIA GeForce 130 512MB vs the ATI Redeon HD 4850 512 MB. Is this a bug or hardware issue?
If you can help me with an honest answer I would really appreciate it.

In that case I would recommend getting the base 24" iMac either the 2.66 or 2.93 machines. Your needs aren't graphics intensive so you would not see any improvements by upgrading the graphics card. Another option... Apple is selling the previous generation 2.8 machines with a very good discount, go to Apple.com, Store, Clearance and you will see it. For your needs this would be a great alternative. I don't know if retail stores have these in stock, if not you would need to purchase directly from Apple online. For your music and movies I would store these on an external drive rather than using up precious space on your internal drive. External drives are inexpensive and provide more flexibility.

    Greetings Peter,
The website for Lion up to date is here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
As Csound1 suggests you should definitely check with all the software manufacturers whose software you depend on to ensure their software is compatible with this new OS.  If you upgrade without checking on those program's compatibility you may find yourself without tools you rely on.
You should also backup all your data prior to installing any new software for safekeeping: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553.
    Cheers.

  • I have not upgraded to Mountain Lion yet, have 3 major apps (acrobatpro) and adobe image ready, and apple works that is not compatible, does anyone know how long snow leopard will be supported. Don't want to upgrade until I purchase new iMac next year.

Consider running your Adobe and AppleWorks software in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels in Lion or Mt. Lion:

The simplest way, is to erase the drive and reinstall the OS X.

Other than that, you will have to trash all your User files, delete all the photos from within iPhoto and then empty the trash.

  • Just purchased new iMac/need to transfer e-mail and a few other questions.

    Hello,
I just purchased a new iMac yesterday, and so far so good!  I had an iMac with Leopard, however, it was time to upgrade.  I was using Time Machine, and I was able to move my music and photos to the computer ( I did not want to mirror my new computer with the old one except for my iTunes library and iPhoto library ) so I moved them manually.  I did have to delete the iTunes folder and iPhoto library that was already in the home folder though - I assume that was correct because it worked.  Also, iPhoto had to "upgrade" while opening my pictures due to the older version of iPhoto - this was supposed to happen right?
So, the only other thing that I want on my new computer is my old e-mails.  I set up mail which was quite easy, and about 250 of my messages came back - what happened to my inbox that was over 1,000 e-mails?  I really would like everything back.  These messages must be on Time Machine - can I move them as easy as I moved the pictures/music?
I have to say, it's nice having my entire old computer on an external harddrive - it's made this process much easier.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Your method of migrating iTunes/iPhoto is one of the more 'dirtier' ways to do it, but absolutely works with no harm. The way you transfered (by deleting the library folders) can sometimes erase previous settings/content, but seeing as the libraries were empty and from a fresh install, no harm is done.
    2. iPhoto update is okay!
    3. To import previous mailbox backups from Time Machine: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11713
    Hope this helps.

  • New imac user adobe CS question

Hello all. I've just upgraded my computer and brought a brand new imac....I have a student version of adobe creative suite premium 1 - I got it when they had just come out with creative suite so it is a few years old. Can I install this on new computer?? it is a mac version but is Leopard too advanced for it?? This may seem like an obvious question but I just wanted to check to see if there was anyway of not spending lots of money seeing I've just spent loads on the new mac!!
Also if i do need to buy creative suite 3, does anyone know of anywhere in the uk that gives teacher discount? I got education discount when I purchased the imac but all the websites that I've seen that do education versions of adobe products only give money off for the students and not the teachers!

I'd like to ditto your question. I've upgraded to CS from the student version I have on my G4. In the bowels of my memory however I seem to recall reading something a while back about Adobe's PhotoShop suite not being designed to run on an intel Mac. The information seems reliable that the new iMacs are coming out next week and I want one. I hate to have to spend an additional bunch of money to pay for the most recent version of the Adobe PhotoShop suite if I can use my old one. I came to this forum hoping to find an answer to your question, Emma.

  • Receiving New iMac Free - Video Card Question

Much to my relief, Apple is replacing my 2008 24" iMac after I have brought it in to them 3 times for the same issue in a month (failure to startup, they have replaced two video cards, one MLB, and the display but the problem repeats itself within 1-2 weeks). They are replacing it with a newer model that has a 27" display, twice the ram (4 GB) and twice the HD space (1 TB). My question is about the video card in the new iMac, it is a ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB, and the card in my old iMac was a NVIDIA 8800 GS with 512 MB. My primary application for my iMac is gaming, which I believe makes the video card the most important component. Does anyone know the difference between 256 and 512 or anything about this new card? Should I ask them if I can pay to upgrade to the Radeon HD 4850 512 MB before I go in to pick up my new iMac?

    Hi Crazy,
I had the exact same problem... my 18month old 24" iMac (with 512MB Video card) went belly up.
I pointed out that what they wanted to offer me had only the 256Mb Card ? ....and he said; "oops I didn't notice that"... so we will send your new 27" iMac - with a 512MB (ATI 4850) at no charge,
So... buddy you just need to tell them - and they will configure your replacement 27" to equal or better the minimum specification of your faulty unit.

  • Purchasing New iMac?

I have plenty of money to purchase a new iMac for school this year. I am going to buy a 24', 500gb HD, 4gb ram with the nVidia graphics card. But I have heard that a new refresh of iMac is coming out soon. I need this for school in the next few weeks, so if the new refresh is coming out in 1-2 months then i'll wait. But if it will be any longer then that i'll just buy the iMac now.
Also if you bought an iMac and then Apple refreshed it a couple of weeks or perhaps a month later would they let you exchange it for a small upgrade fee or something along them lines?
Thank you for any help offered, i'm curious on your opinions on when I should get one.

But I have heard that a new refresh of iMac is coming out soon.
This is an unsubstantiated rumour, because Apple don't announce new models in advance.

No-one outside Apple knows and Apple aren't telling. This is always the situation; whenever you buy a new computer there is a risk that a newer model will appear after not too long. That way you could put off buying one for ever.

    No chance.

  • Purchased new IMAC .... planning to give my old one to another user.  What do I need to do?

I've purchased a new IMAC and plan to give my old IMAC away to another family member.  After I transfer my settings, files and documents from the old to the new IMAC, what do I need to do to scrub the machine and give it to a new user?

This is preparing one for sale but the principle is the same.

  • Considering purchasing new iMac from MacMall

Is MacMall reputable?  Anyone have any experiences with them?  Does Apple honor the regular warranty with them?
Why should I even bother buying from them you ask?
They seem to offer new iMac's for $100-$150 cheaper than apple store.  Another main reason is no sales tax.  That's another $120 savings.  So, it will be about $240 savings for the same new computer from them.--assuming I get a real new computer and not some repackaged problem computer.
I checked amazon but they don't offer the new iMac's now.
    Thanks

Well, I went ahead with the purchase and I received it yesterday.  Shipping was reasonable-Free UPS ground 3-5 days.  I ordered a new iMAC 27 inch, which normally retails for $1699.  It cost $1607 plus another 3% off through some link which took me to MacMall for a total of $1559.
Everything appeared brand new with all the packaging.  The computer looks and works perfectly so far.
I also saved on sales tax by buying online and having it shipped to my home.  Macmall has not retail stores in my state so they do not have to charge and collect sales tax.  They are based in California, so CA residents would be charged tax.  That's how the state tax codes work.  I'm a CPA, so I'm fully aware of the tax laws.  So total savings were $258 lower than the apple store (again thanks in large part to no sales tax).
If I have a waaranty issue, the computer comes with the same 1 year warranty.  I'm not entirely sure if I would have to deal with MacMall or Apple in this event, but I'm crossing my fingers for now.
I read some unfavorable and scary reviews of MacMall, but my experience worked out.  I also did verify they are listing as an authorized resller on apple's website.

  • Purchasing new iMac (27 i5), what is best method to transfer programs/files/documents from 24" iMAC?  What is the best method to remove personal data from OS?

Purchasing a new iMac (27 i5), what is the best method to transfer programs/files,documents from a 24" iMac?
What is the best method to remove personal data from the 24" iMac?

Use setup assistant which is offered when you setup your new Mac.  It will transfer information from a Time Machine backup, Clone or another Mac.
It's best to do this during setup to avoid issues with duplicate IDs.

  • Purchased new iMac wont't  let me into my Photoshop CS6

I purchased a new iMac.  I had CS6 on my old iMac.  It shows up on the icon bar but it won't let me go into it.  Do I need my serial number, and how can I get it?

You obviously mean deactivating it, not "unregistering" it.
Yes, deactivating it, obviously.  Thank you for pointing that out, the repercussions if misinterpreted could have been devastating.

  • New iMac 27" i7 migration questions...

I have just recieved my new iMac i7 27". The only other mac computer I have is my macbook 13" unibody. I have about 280GB used of its HD and backed up through both time capsule (time machine) and superduper on external HD. I have a couple of questions:
    1. Migration assistant; is it faster to run a direct ethernet connection from my Macbook, a firewire 800 from my external superduper backup or ethernet from time capsule??
    2. Is there any issues with the Macbook running Leopard (fully updated) and the new iMac having Snow Leopard with migration assistant?
    3. Any estimates at how long 280GB or so would take with the above 3 methods?
Thanks a lot for any answers or info on the best way to go about the transfer.

Thanks for advice, I just did it via time capsule over ethernet as I would have had to run a new Superduper backup onto my new firewire drive and that would have taken a while anyways. It took 2.5 hrs to do it.
One final question...Is it normal for migration assistant to only bring over Apple programs? It didn't transfer any of my Photoshop programs or any other programs that were installed on my Macbook unless they were Apple ones like Aperture (and then it brought over a corrupted Aperture library missing 40GB)
Next time I'll just start from scratch and just transfer documents.

  • Purchased new iMac.....Dilemas

sup guys. so, here's the deal, got a new imac with 1.5gb, 20" intel CD. problem is, my audio drivers arent' working, tascam us-122 and miniman oxygen 8, two devices that i really need. a few apple programs, including audio midi setup and mail, seem to crash every so often. other than that, the mac is really fast, especially since my prior system was the G4 imac at 1GHZ. should i just wait it out for the audio drivers to be universal and for apple to work out more bugs, or should i return it and get the g5 online? also, why is the G5's ram so much more expensive? if i switch to G5 will I suffer drastic loss of speed and go backwards in technology? Someone please provide some useful and practical insight for this confused but dedicated mac addict!!!

I can't help on the audio driver question but I can tell you that memory on a g5 is more spendy because the cards used are only made for, and work on, one computer. or so I've been told...
