Purchasing new Operating system
Has anyone purchased any new operating system. Leopard or Mountain lion? There appears to be only 2 method through the Apple store which must take a long time to down load and would seem to have a high risk of corruption and Apple provides a USB stick with the Operating system which I am told you must pay for the USB.
No more 10.7 USB's, it's all 10.8 downloads now.
Yes it does take a long time to download and have a high risk of corruption, depending where you are.
Stick with 10.6 like lot of people are doing, make duplicates of your 10.6 install disk, download and burn a couple of copies of the 10.6.8 Combo Update and your set.
Clone your boot drive to a couple of external drives too. Settle in for the next decade on the best OS X version (and the last SJ approved) ever.

For what it's worth, from my reading of the Snow Leopard EULA (and I would assume that there is similar language in the EULAs for all other operating systems, as well), I'm not seeing any obligation on the part of Apple to provide Security Updates of any kind, period/full stop. The wording appears to be completely "use at your own risk." I have no idea whether this "use at your own risk" would survive a legal challenge, or if such a legal challenge would depend on whether or not Apple is still selling (or even giving away for free) an OS, or whether local law would, according to this, override the EULA. Perhaps this is why Apple never formally announces EOL or discontinuance of support for an OS. They can always claim that they are still supporting an OS, whether or not in any practical sense, they are. This hardly constituted ongoing support, but perhaps it was to deter the threat of legal action, or maybe it was simply out of benevolence. I don't know.
Besides that, even when Apple was still actively "supporting" Snow Leopard, which I don't think it is any longer, "use at your own risk" would still have applied to a case where Apple may have been late with a patch, or a response, or an adequate response, to a zero-day threat, such as Flashback was, which was constantly evolving. Many thousands were affected by that, and, to my knowledge, at least, there was no legal action directed at Apple throughout or after that episode. If there was any, I don't think it succeeded.

I have an original iPad and downloaded the new operating system. Now, I cannot add to my contacts or calendar apps, and Pages ( which I purchased) is not allowing me to use the bold, underline, and italics functions. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
No, it stays with the current OS (iOS5 in this case) - Apple doesn't allow downgrading iOS
If you are syncing to a desktop, you shoudln't lose anything. If you aren't syncing, then that's the first thing you should do, to protect contacts etc.
the other thing is, when the iPad is connected to iTunes, right-click its name in the Devices list and choose Back Up.
That way, when yoiu do the restore, everything should come back as was. -

I recently had a new operating system installed on my two-year old windows computer. iTunes wants me to authorize my computer (again) and then says that I already have five computers authorized. Should I deauthorize all? Would that affect my iPad and iPhone? I may have old, non-functioning computers that are still authorized and should be removed.
Your past purchases are not on the computer. By choosing download all, those purchases will download to the computer.
Once authorized to your iTunes account you can control the computer.
When syncing the iPad the first time you will get the warning " this iPad is synced with another computer, syncing will erase all contents and replace with the contents of this computer"

The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is still $29. You must have at least a model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.

Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications. -

Generally once Apple gives the official release date, then Macs have become available for up to date pricing. As long as just the season has been stated, there is no guarantee that Macs purchased during the season in question will get up to date pricing. So watch http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ the day that the release date is announced. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. Thankfully since 10.7's release Apple's full fledged releases have only been $20 USD, and updates are free to the full fledged release. I.e. 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 are updates to 10.7.
10.8.1 to 10.8.4 are updates to 10.8. It was only with 10.6 and earlier the distribution for each full release was at least $99 and up to date were around $20 going back to 10.2. 10.6 is though available on the Apple Store for only $20. -

Firefox is a browser; do you mean that your MacBook Pro currently has Mac OS X 10.5.8 (“Leopard”) as its operating system?
If you can’t afford to lose your documents, have you been making regular backups of your MacBook Pro’s internal disk to date?
You can upgrade your MacBook Pro to at least Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8). Depending upon which model you have, you could potentially upgrade it to the current version, Mavericks (OS X 10.9.2), but you’ll need to get to 10.6.8 before you can upgrade any further. You can do that by purchasing the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, installing Snow Leopard, and then running Software Update to get to 10.6.8. Note that if you currently depend upon any PowerPC applications, they will not work on versions of OS X later than 10.6.8. You might also need to upgrade its installed RAM to ensure good performance on a newer operating system.
Before you do any operating system upgrade, be sure that you have made a backup of your valuable documents.
Note that your current freeze up could be resolvable without having to upgrade your operating system. Would you prefer to stay with Leopard and resolve the freeze, or would you prefer to upgrade to a newer operating system? -

If you will go to settings to itunes and apps store. Once you've logged in with your apple id you then are given the option to automatically download apps that were purchased using the Apple id in which you logged in with .

This is a new imacFor music that you've purchased from Apple that are on your iPhone you should be able to copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. Also if you are in the US then you should be able to re-download past music purchases for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work
