Pure primary color shows other primaries?

Hi, I'm trying to get my head around exactly how the HSL sliders in Lightroom 4.4 control Saturation and Luminance. In the process of doing that, I created 4 PSDs in Photoshop, each with a single layer (i.e. the background): of red (255,0,0), blue (0,0,255), green (0,255,0), and a gray image (127, 127, 127). When I open the PSDs within Lightroom, they show in the histogram as having a sizeable contribution from the two missing primaries in each: if I open the blue PSD it shows Red 41.1%, Green 18.3%, and Blue at 93.8%, if I open the red PDS it shows Red 75.4%, Green 34.7%, and Blue at 13.7%, if I open the green PSD it shows Red 61.0%, Green 94.2%, and Blue at 37.8%. Can somebody please explain what's going on here? I'm not saying this is how I intend to use Lightroom, I just created these test images so I could see how the extremes of Saturation and Luminance adjustments would affect the colors and the results I got surprised me.
First, some questions about Saturation.
Let us say that I have opened the blue PSD document. The Histogram initially shows Red 41.1%, Green 18.3%, and Blue 93.8%  If I drag the Blue Saturation slider all the way to the right (i.e. +100), the color on the screen does not change, but the Histogram changes and now reflects Red 39.0%, Green 10.8%, and Blue 93.8%. The color looks identical, but the Histogram is now different. What is happening here?
Also, let us say that I have opened the blue PSD document. I would expect that if I grabbed the Saturation Targeted Adjustment Tool and dragged up or down, that only the Blue slider would change, but instead, I see both the Blue and the Purple Saturation sliders changing. Why is this?
I get similar results regardless of which primary RGB color PSD I open.
The one behavior I witnessed within Lightroom that I expected to see was that if I dragged the Blue Saturation slider to -100, the image would become gray.
Now, on to Luminance.
Is Luminance synonymous with Brightness in Photoshop? Analogous?
As with the Saturation Targeted Adjustment Tool, when I use the Luminance Targeted Adjustment Tool, instead of seeing just the blue Luminance change, I see the Blue and Purple Luminance sliders change. Why is that?
If I drag the Blue Luminance slider to +100, the color becomes somewhat like a pastel, i.e. as though white were added to the color.
Ultimately, I have no idea what Luminance is really doing in Lightroom.
Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!
Matt

Thanks for your very thoughtful and detailed answer!
"First, it should be clear that saturation is not absolute, it is relative to color space. A 255/0/0 red in sRGB is not the same as a 255/0/0 red in Adobe RGB. The numbers are the same, but the color is different. Inversely, the same color will have different numbers in sRGB and Adobe RGB."
OK, I see this. Both sRGB and Adobe RGB are color spaces that are derived from the RGB color model and they each encompass a different gamut. Now, your screenshots got me thinking that I had been sloppy in creating my test documents because I had simply accepted the default color profile (i.e. for me sRGB). So, I went ahead and created two new PSD documents: one which used the ProPhoto profile, and another which used the sRGB profile. My results were even more confusing!
The Red PSD with a ProPhoto Profile
The first image I created in Photoshop and examined within Lightroom had the following profile according to the File Info dialog within Photoshop CS6:
When I opened that image within Lightroom, the histogram showed zip/nada within the Library Module:
and showed the following within the Develop Module:
Now, I do understand that there is a difference between the two histograms in general, and that it is generally understood that the Develop Module shows a more accurate histogram, but to show nothing at all? I don't understand that. So:
Why does the Library Module's histogram show nothing at all?
As can be seen, for a primary color image created with the ProPhoto profile, it shows 100% of the primary color, which is what we would expect, correct?
However, I don't understand the two spikes at the extreme left and right. I guess I would expect to see only a single spike at the right?
The Red PSD with a sRGB Profile
The second image I created in Photoshop and examined within Lightroom had the following profile according to the File Info dialog within Photoshop CS6:
When I opened the image within Lightroom, the histogram showed the following within the Library Module:
and showed the following within the Develop Module:
As can be seen, the histograms match up perfectly. Now, as to the values displayed:
Even though the image is 'pure' red (i.e. 255,0,0 in sRGB) am I to understand that it is displayed in the histogram as 75.4,34.7,13.7 because within the color space being utilized by Lightroom, that sRGB (255,0,00) would map to a point in the Lightroom color space that is only 75.4% pure red, is 34.7% green, and 13.7% blue?
Because the 'Red ProPhoto' psd from the first example showed as 100% red in the Develop Module's histogram, is it safe to conclude that the 'working' color space within Lightroom is akin to ProPhoto RGB?
Thanks to all,
Matt

I have an ipad2 and my question is about the calendar. I set up multiple calendars with different colors. Some of the events show up in filled color. Others only show with a colored dot in front of the event. I can't figure out why some show up one way and others show up differently? Any thoughts?

On mine the ones that show on a coloured background are all-day events, the ones with dots and just timed events.

  • DigitalColor Meter show other colors as created in application.

    Hi community.
I'm not an expert in color and maybe I make a mistake or don't understand the workflow.
I create different colored boxes in TextEdit and other application. Both use the same OS X color tool to define the color.
I define the color RGB. R in one box, G in second box and B in third box.
See attachement with example for red, it means R=255 / G=0 / B=0.
    Green box is R=0 / G=255 / B=0
    Blue box is R=0 / G=0 / B=255
When I use DigitalColor Meter from OS X 10.6 it show other color when I move over the different boxes.
    Result of DigitalColor Meter is:
    Red R = 255, G = 19, B = 20
    Green R = 0, G = 251, B = 52
    Blue R = 45, G = 44, B = 250
    What is wrong ?
    What is my mistake ?
Do I don't make the right workflow ?
    Regards
    Jochen

    @Roger
Thanks. Now clear Help of DigitalColor Meter.
which gives you a read-out in different formats used by different programs.
    In Help is following workflow.
    My simple translation is:
Do you do following to adapt colors with DigitalColor Meter
    1. Open application DigitalColor Meter ... and so on. OK
    2. Select from menü the color system. OK
    3. Move the mouse about pixel which do you will change. By moving the mouse the color of pixels will show.
I cannot see in which way I can change the color in original. I can only make a copy of actual values of color in different color systems.

  • Disappearing Colors show up only in the shadows of other windows

Ok - this is weird: I noticed that some colors in web designs I was working on were not displaying. Like a light grey nav bar shows up white. This is also true in certain applications - the light blue row color in Yojimbo and my font manager are not showing up.
And yet, if I drag my photoshop color picker over the areas that should be colored, it registers the correct hex color, but still displays it as white.
And then I realized that these missing colors show up in the drop shadows of +other windows+ when I place or drag those windows over the window with the missing color (my design or Yojimbo say).
I've restarted a couple times and recalibrated my display. This had no effect. The colors displayed normally when I logged in under a different user account, so I believe the problem can be isolated to a user account issue and not a display issue, but, of course, I am not positive about that.
Has anyone experienced this before, or have any troubleshooting advice.
    Thanks!

  • Changing the primary colors for Look N Feel

We have an application that has a menu option to change the look n feel, currently using 4 or so of the standard ones. We are trying to change some of the colors to create a new skin / feel approp for our company.
    -- partial excerpt.
    look = "WHICHEVER";
    UIManager.setLookAndFeel(look);
    UIManager.put("Panel.background", new Color(191, 98, 4));
// This does green in Metal only.
    UIManager.put("MenuBar.background", new Color(115, 164, 209));
SwingUtilities.updateComponentTreeUI(root); Two issues I have are:
    1. According to this-
    http://www.jasperpotts.com/blog/2008/08/nimbus-uimanager-uidefaults/
"Colors in Nimbus are derived, which means there are a core set of colors which are constants and all the other colors are calculated from those. This means you can simply change those and the 1000s of other colors that are related and used in the painters will update to reflect the new base color."
But so far I am unable to change one fo the primary colors and have it noticably effect the other component colors.
    2. After changing the look and feel using the above snippet, it changes the look and feel immediatly, but it does not change the colors at that time, if I then switch to another look n feel, it shows the colors, and if I go back to Nimbus the colors are now changed as well.
    Thanks,

But so far I am unable to change one fo the primary colors and have it noticably effect the other component colors.I recommend you use camickr's great utility UIManagerDefaults to know the nimbus' basic colors:
You can find the utility here: [http://tips4java.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/uimanager-defaults/]
In that utility, change the look and feel to Nimbus, choose *'By Value Type'* radio button and select *'color'* in the combo box, all the default colors would be displayed, search for colors which appear to be basic colors ( not DerivedColor type )
Using that utility, I found some basic colors that are really changing the look and feel e.g.
    nimbusBase, nimbusGreen, nimbusRed, nimbusOrange, etc.
    e.g. Try:
    UIManager.put("nimbusBase", new ColorUIResource(new Color(100,50,150)));Thanks!

    Hello.
I am installing Adobe Reader 9.0 onto a new windows xp corporate build for my company. We would like to have the Forms Preference "Highlight Color" Show border Hover Color for Fields checkbox unchecked by default for any user that logs onto the workstation. (All new WinXP profiles, and if possible, any existing profiles) Is there a registry entry that can be changed to ensure that this option is unchecked by default on our WinXP build?
    Thank you.

    bumping thread...
I have downloaded the Adobe Reader 9.0 Custom Wizard install creator tool, but it still appears that I will need to know what registry key to change/import into the installer for this preference to be disabled by default for all users of the workstation that Adobe Reader 9.x is installed onto.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

In Dreamweaver 6, I created a new fluid layout. I set up (4) DIVs. In the 3rd div, I changed the font color. The new color shows up on the website when viewed in my computer desktop, but, when viewed in a tablet and a cell phone, the color of the font does not change. It's the same in Dreamweaver's Live view. It shows the new color on Desktop view and not in the cell phone or tablet view. Also, I changed the font itself in one of the DIVs and it shows up in the new font on the desktop view and website viewed thru the computer, but, not on the tablet or cell phone. Can someone please explain. I want to be able to change the fonts and colors for viewing in the tablet and cell phone, also. The fonts were all standard fonts. Sans-erif and Verdana and Arial were tried. Thanks.

    Yes, did. Same result.
Sanity Check: Is it booting from LiveUSB/CD? I would not expect HDT/Reboot or Power Off entries from a generated grub config. I would expect those entries from a LiveUSB/CD.
From system itself, but tried all options (I knew) like 1) using fallback to install LTS and run commands, 2) live-CD, 3) kernel parameter systemd.unit etc
No worries, I am giving up on issue for some time.
    EDIT:
    Thanks

  • Print only primary colors

    Hello there,
I just bought 2 new cartridges for my printer HP Photosmart c4600 All-in-one series and tried to print docs in color.
    - 1 HP 300 (CC640EE) Remanufactures High Capacity Black Ink cartridge
    - 1 HP 300 (CC643EE) Remanufactures High Capacity Colour Ink cartridge.
However, it only print in blue, pink and yellow (no orange or other or so). Could you let me know how I can solve this?
We use it for our social entreprise and have many posters and flyers to print on daily basis and the quality is very bad.
    Many thanks for your help,
    Caroline

    Hi @Caroline1985,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Photosmart c4600 is only printing primary colors. I am happy to help!
    Please see the following guides:
Can I Refill The Ink In My HP Ink Cartridge?
Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Photosmart C4600 and C4700 All-in-One Printer Series.
I would also suggest using HP Genuine ink cartridges, not remanufactured cartridges, as it is a possibility the issue could lie with those cartridges.
Hope this information helps, and have a good day!

  • Having color show up on AIM.

Is there any way to have my font and window color show up when chatting with someone that's using AIM?
I ran some test using 2 of my screen names, one on iChat, and one on AIM. When I send a message from iChat to AIM, the text in the AIM window shows up Black, instead of the Blue it's supposed to be.
Is there anyway around this, or do all iChat messages show up with black text in AIM?

    Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
    Nope.
Some AIM users on a PC say that what iChat users do about changing colours only effects the colours that the Name of the Buddy is coloured with. Others say it makes no difference.
    AIM only displays Black text.

  • Why are the primary colors located on the vectorscope where they are?

It seems that things would be simpler if one of the primary colors were at the top, bottom, left, or right of the vectorscope. Why is that not the case, and why are the primary colors located on the vectorscope where they are?

Probably really only because of tradition based on the way analog vectorscopes drew the trace.
Notice that red is farther out in an analog system, but smaller allowances in digital systems.

I have the weirdest issue and hope someone can shed some light on my issue has I'm baffled as to what the true issue is.A replacement motherboard was purchased foe a PC that had a motherboard issue. This is a new motherboard and not a refurbished one. Unfortunately, I keep getting a pink screen and/or a flashing colors when I use the on-board video controllers - whether VGA or HDMI. The symptoms of flashing colors and/or solid pink screen is definitely not due to the monitor has it has been tested on several different monitors and the main monitor being use to test it is the one I'm currently using and I have no issues with. In addition to the screen issues, I've lost USB controls prior to the PC lockup and screen color show. I deleted the standard VGA drivers and then had them re-installed and from their updated it and it seemed to go...

Since downloading ios5 on my iphone 4 a few days ago, the capacity guage in itunes shows "other" as over 21Gb and i can no longer fit any music on my iphone.
How do I get rid of the other stuff?
capacity available on 32 Gb iphone is 28.49Gb
i previously had 21.97 Gb music, over 6 Gb photos, about 1Gb of apps, and minute amount of audio
now i have no music, 5.4 Gb photos and similar (0.8Gb) for  apps and audio. i have deleted heaps of photos and unused apps to try to make space but obviosly this is a much bigger problem. I also created a smaller music folder on itunes to sync to but at present no music is selected for syncing due to the lack of available space.
i have 15Gb icloud account now also which is about half full.
Ive done a little research and heard similar tales but with much smaller other totals than this. Can you help?
i cant update my apps as i get a message saying i do not have enough available space.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.
