Purple & green hues in midtones in black and white

hello,
is there a way to remove or avoid getting purple & green hues in midtones (occasionally in shadows) when making images black and white?
I've been using the channel mixer (most times the red channel) to covert images to black and white and there's noticable purple/green hues.
any ideas?

You wouldn't happen to be using the ProPhoto RGB color space to work in, would you?
There's a known inaccuracy with the GPU implementation of the Adobe Color Engine that causes some coloring not unlike what you're describing.
A workaround is to go into Preferences - Performance, then into Advanced Graphics Processor Settings and change the Drawing Mode to Basic, then OK out and restart Photoshop.  This moves the color-management logic into the CPU, and there apparently it has no problems with accuracy.
Another possibility might be to use Adobe RGB as a working space instead of ProPhoto RGB.

  • Why is my black and white video showing purple/green color cast from ProRes 422 h264?

When transcoding from ProRes 422 to h264 in Adobe Media Encoder, I'm seeing both green and purple color cast on my black and white video.  ProRes on top, h264 on bottom.

What do you make of the fact that the same video, encoded in MPEG Streamclip does not have the issue on the same hardware, played in Quicktime Player?
A valid data point for consideration, but the only way to know with certainty is to get the image onto a calibrated TV.
Observation will always trump deduction.  So...observe!  (Just be sure to do it accurately with a calibrated TV.)
The Vimeo preset is creating H.264 MP4 files.  AVCHD is a very specific subset of the H.264 codec, and cannot be generated by PP.

Hi everyone, I'm the one from the example above posted by @frankensinatra and I can confirm having the same problem.
But I want to add something. The problem is not only related to black and white but to every picture, and it can be worse or not depending on the range of colors involved. Apparently, there is a shift between some RGB value that is going to remove some green producing a magenta look.
I've started contacting some developer about this problem and some of them is trying to understand what's going on.
In my case, the problem came up when I bought the new iPad mini Retina. I didn't have this problem with the previous iPad mini. Same OS for both devices.
The photo you see in the link above is a perfect example of what happens just going from one app to another and saving to the camera roll. In that case, the situation doesn't change if I send that picture from within the app by email, or to another app using the "open in..." feature. It keeps being purple. And the problem can be reproduced all the time.
Have some of you noticed the same?

  • Monitor went temporarily to black and white with green tint

Last night when I turned on my computer my monitor showed only a black and white picture with an overall green tint. I restarted it, but the same. This morning, however, it is back to normal. The strange thing is that my house lights seemed to be dim, too. (I thought it was just me until I turned on my computer). Is this a sign that my monitor may be failing, or some kind of fluke?

It is, but only with a lot of compositing.
In FCP this would be doable with garbage mattes, but you'd need the 60 point one from Paul Crisp...and that wouldn't be fun.
In After Effects, you'd have to mask everyone else, and again, keyframe.
Shake might do this well, and it is on the cheap now. But it has a HUGE learning curve. And I have no doubt that even with Shake you are looking at a frame-by-frame manipulation.
Good effects aren't easy to pull off.

  • HP7960 black and white prints half purple

We use the HP7960 mostly to print copies of black and white photographs.  The copies start out fine, but change to purple about midway through the page.  I have set the color to Grayscale but it doesn't seem to make any difference.  It is very important that we get good copies of these historic photographs.  How can I correct this?

Likely your color cartridge is running low on yellow ink. When printing graphics the color cartridge is used because it provides better print quality than using the black cartridge.  If you are printing on photo paper the photo and color cartridges will be used, the black ink is not compatible with photo paper.
Replacing the color cartridge with a fresh #57 one should resolve your issue.
If you are printing on photo paper replacing the #58 photo cartridge with a #59 photo gray cartridge may give you better results.

  • Hp photsmart 309a black and white photos print purple

When I print black and white photos they have a very purple tint. Any suggestions?

If Photoshop manages color, you need to pick the correct profile for the printer/paper. The profile will be called something like e.g. <printer name> Epson Premium Glossy, if that's the paper you're using.

  • Black and white photo prints with purple cast

I used Photoshop to convert the digital photos to black and white before placing them in Indesign CS3. On the monitor the photo looks great, but when I print the newsletter, each photo has a purple tint. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

    Polly,
your black and white photos are probably 'Grayscales'.
The print has a tint because it is printed by rich black
CMYK instead of K-only, and the printer is not perfectly
calibrated or not calibrated at all.
a)It is a PostScript printer and it was chosen
    Output=CompositeRGB instead of CompositeCMYK or
CompositeGray (CompositeCMYK is necessary if the
doc contains Grayscales and color images).
Composite### doesn't mean the source but the printer.
PostScript toner printers and inkjets are CMYK devices.
Desktop printers are often considered as RGB devices.
b)The Grayscale was converted back to RGB (still gray though).
c)The Grayscale was converted to CMYK, which delivers in
Photoshop by default rich black CMYK.

  • Wrong green tone on black and white photos in Photoshop / Windows 7

I have a problem when using photoshop CS5. When I open the photo in the editing area - it has a little green tone. When I save for web the same photo become real black and white without a green tone:

I have looked at the settings on my Windows laptop (with no problems) and made the same settings, but it does not help. I have tried to change nearly everything in the settings.
Hope someone can help me. It is a bad problem for an amateur photographer... :-(

  • Black and White pic - why is it purple?

Got an old black and white photo that I thought I'd scan then enhance. It's actually BLACK and WHITE (not sepia but maybe more grayish than black)
I scanned it with my Canon MP830 and the scan looked B&W.
I opened it in Photoshop CS3 and it looked B&W.
I cropped it, sharpened it etc etc and it still looked B&W.
But when I printed it (on my Canon MP830) onto Photo Paper Glossy Plus, it's got a distinctly mauve tinge.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks :-)

Hi everyone.  Sorry about the delay answering, just got back from hols.
Before I get to the original subject, I must say I find these Adobe forums very hard to navigate.   I've questioned and answered on hundreds of forums over the past 15 years and the Adobe group has a 'style' all of its own.   For example, I wanted to post a reply in which I could comment about everyone's responses, but now, as I type this, I can only see PDF's post, so I can't refer back to the two earlier posters, to make detailed comments about their helpful remarks.  On most boards, if I hit the REPLY button on the last post, I get to see all previous posts above my response box.  Not so here.  There doesn't seem to be a PREVIEW button, either, to 'test-run' my reply.  Maybe I have the page laid out incorrectly....
OK, back to my question about my scanned B&W photo printing with a purple cast. Sorry but I'm not experienced enough in Photoshop to be able to apply the curves and layers suggestions.  However, it's possible that I should have used the Black and White setting on the scanner, rather than Grayscale.  I did this because the scan Preview looked quite weird in B&W but appeared better in Grayscale, so that's what I scanned with.
PDF, I'm not sure that my Canon MP830 has the ability to print using only black ink but I'll check it out.  I seem to recall that some of myHP printers from way back had the facility, but if the newer Canons have the function, it's not obvious.
Thanks for all your responses. :-)

  • Colour hues - black and white prints

I've just replaced the ink cartridges in my hp photosmart printer, and now images that are black and white on my computer print out with a pinky yellow hue? How do I fix this
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system?  It sounds like your printer is not properly printing cyan.  If you are printing photo's the printer will generally not use black ink, it will mix the colors because the pigmented black ink is not compatible with photo paper.

  • Black and white printing problem on Epson Artisan 50

When I print a black and white photo on glossy paper, I don't get black and white. I get a kind of purple hued black and white. Black text below, however, is perfectly black. So it seems it's not some kind of fault with the ink. I am choosing "black/greyscale" rather than "color". Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? I have tried printing from different apps, including Preview, and same thing happens. Also different black and white images.

Yes, should be, but I'm not. Epson ink, Epson paper and same problem. The image is black and white. Converted in Photoshop. Print is set to "quality". Epson controls color. Not vivid. Paper is set to glossy. All as it should be.
What I have found by searching is this quote:
"Inkjet printers use their color inks and the black ink to generate B&W prints. But there are some noticeable drawbacks in doing it this way. Namely the possibility of having a color cast on your B&W prints, which is a barely perceptible color tint (usually green or magenta) that prevents your print from being true black & white.”
Other pages confirm this issue, so it seems that you just can't get decent, true black and white with a color printer. At least this color printer.
Do you find that when you print a black and white image you get true black and white with no color cast? Interestingly, I do when I print on plain paper, but not on glossy.

  • Black and white PDFs printing in changing colours from preview

I am often printing black and white PDFs from preview with my HP PSC 1510 All in one printer and scanner. After updating to OS 10.6, my PDFs have been coming out in colour. They usually start in black, then change in the middle of a line of music or text to purple, red, blue and green. The longer the document, the more different colours I get. This is not occuring when printing black and white documents from NeoOffice, only when printing black and white PDFs from Preview. As this is what most of my printing consists of, this is extremely annoying.
I am high on black ink, as I recently changed catridge and I have also made certain that the printer driver knows this by using the printers and faxes preferance panel and selcting the" levels of material" button to update this, and it seems to understand that I am high on black and low on colour, but still the problem occurs with every PDF i print. (If this button is called something else, but similar, that is because I am using a norwegian system and don't actully know what it is called in the english OSX.)
There is no "print in black and white" button in the printer dialog either, so I can't fool the printer to print in black and white what it perceives as colour in my black and white PDFs either.

Be sure you have applied both the 10.6.2 update and the absolute latest drivers for HP from Apple:

  • How to colorize and old black and white video? please suggest easy ways :)

1- please tell me more than a way of how to colorize the black and white movie ..!
what is the best way to do that in less time as possible (actually i found it a hard work ).  please tell me there's a way to make it
2- also i want to know if there is a palette of color value numbers . let me make it more understandable
when i applied the color balance effect on an adjustment layer (using AE)  to have a try to color a frame,  i got the RGB values to control by which the color i want. so i found it a little hard to get far a way from the orange , purple , green , pink , red , gray and blue colors via combining the values .. so i am asking if there is a palette that could help me to mix color values and get more colors!!!
3- what programs could do this? i have an idea that after effects could do it but what else?

Here's a step by step and a few other ideas. To add color to a black and white film it is best to use the Color blend mode. AE CC 2014 has very powerful mask tracking which can be used to isolate things like faces and clothing. A bit of hand work may also be required. For some scenes, you'll need to use RotoBrush to isolate the elements you want to colorize. You cannot effectively colorize just by manipulating channels unless you want very subtle colors because black and white images may have exactly the same color channel values for a man's shirt that you want to turn blue, the leaves on a tree that you want to turn green or the car he is driving that you want to turn red. You can, however, create a mask that tracks the car and then add a red layer or fill effect using the color blend mode to turn the gray car red and maintain all of the highlights and shadow values.
Really powerful color correction software has the power to isolate and track areas based on edges (much the same way rotobrush works) so this kind of color correction can be done on the fly but it still requires a separate mask for every color you want to add.

  • Video out black and white?

ok i just got the apple cables for the ipod..
when i plug it in the tv it shows it in black and white?
i use the video plugs red to red white to white and green to yellow thats the only one that works for video..
is it the cable or the video from my i ipod touch?
    thanks

So your TV only has three plugs and you tried to plug in the rest of the video. See if your TV has more plugs like three videos and two audios. What you tried to do is plug a component cable into a composite jack which doesn't work. I think you bought the wrong cables. You need the composite. The ones you have is for an HDTV
