Purpose of Adobe PDF Link Helper

I have an idea of what this browser add-on does.
AcroPDF.dll
Adobe PDF Browser Control
AKA  Adobe Acrobat Sharepoint OpenDocuments Component
AKA PDF Browser Control
Apparently if I disable it PDFs embedded in a page with the <embed> tag fail to function properly.
However, I can't find anywhere accurate documentation on what this add-on below does.
AcroIEHelperShim.dll
Adobe PDF Link Helper
AKA Adobe PDF Helper for Internet Explorer
AKA AcroIEHelperShim Library
IE9 seems to work flawlessly without it.  PDF's still open within the browser with it disabled.  Only if I uncheck Display PDF in Browser in Readers preferences does that cease.
So, can someone (hopefully Adobe) entlighten me on what this add-on does, and why I shouldn't just have all employees have this disabled by default?

I do not see either PDF Link Helper or                Adobe Acrobat SharePoint Open Documents Component in 64 bit IE9.  I see them both in the 32 bit version.  Are they both for displaying in a browser?  The root issue I am trying to solve is getting the SharePoint 2010 Acrobat X integration to work,  The original symptom was that a user would check out a pdf  file from a SharePoint library, edit it (using the comment feature in Reader) and then Save or Check In.  Either action would result in a Cannot Access the Network error.  Looking at the HTML traffic in Fiddler showed the error text had nothing to do with the problem, which seemed to be about attribute values.  Anyway, I put this on the back burner for a couple months and returned to it recently.  It now works on my machine in a 32 bit browser.  (ACCEPTABLE RESTRICTION).    My coworker still gets the original error.  I poked around and found the SharePoint Open Documents add-on on my machine and not hers and suspect it has something to do with the difference in behavior.  So I am trying to find out what it is supposed to do and if it really is relevant, how to cause it to be downloaded on other people’s machines.  I have been through the server configuration steps listed in Chapter 13 of the Acrobat Admin Guide.

  • Adobe PDF Link Helper add on IE 8

Hello, we have a client who is having issues with their IE 8 browser - it freezes, crashes and seems to leave behind extract iexplore processes that don't close properly - searching online, I discovered that the add on "Adobe PDF Link Helper" can sometimes cause these type of issues with IE 8 - the client has this add on enabled -  can anyone confirm this? Is there any information on this?

Most of what I've read on this points to other addons as well (Google or Ask toolbar, for instance)... and also shows that it is most prevalent in Vista, which has more bugs than a swamp. I read a few places where a Reset of IE fixed it, others where disabling the addon did the trick. Disabling the link helper can have some adverse consequences, though... primarily being the loss of the ability to open ANY PDFs in the browser.

  • Adobe PDF Link Helper Problem

    Hello,
I am looking for some help because I am out of options. When I open up a pdf through IE, and use the add-on toolbar, none of the buttons can be used. They are all "frozen" except for the zoom function. This is the case for multiple or any documents. I have tried uninstalling IE9 and reverting back to IE8 but no luck. None of the IE are 64 bit, they are all 32 bit. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Here is a bit of background:
OS: Windows 7 (some PC's are 32 bit and others are 64 bit)
    Adobe X 10.1.3
    IE9 and IE8 both 32 bit.
Add ons are enabled for Adobe.
    Thank you.

  • Wich is exactly the purpose of "Adobe PDF lik helper ADD ON"

We have some problems with SSO in our applications. When I enter to our app with SSO the IE10 has closed immediately. In this situation we have two solutions, delete all temporary files, cookies, history etc.. or disable this addon.
Curiously, when we disable this add on of IE10 the problem disappears totally. After some time, the addon will change to enabled automatically.

Most of what I've read on this points to other addons as well (Google or Ask toolbar, for instance)... and also shows that it is most prevalent in Vista, which has more bugs than a swamp. • Missing pdf link helper with IE8x64

I'm using IE8x64 with Adobe Reader installed, I noticed that in the IE8 x64 addons there is no plugin pdf link helper to open the PDF documents in the browser, but it opens web links directly in the program. Is there any way to add the addons in x64 browser?

Thanks for the tip, Bob. This worked! I will need to check and see if all the graphical features came through - there are not very many.
    Cheers!

  • Adobe PDF Export Help

I just purchased the Adobe PDF Export and it tel;l me there was an error with the file I am exporting.  Why?  It is a PDF and I want to convert to a word document.

    Hi, ntobooks.
I'm sorry for the issues you're having. Have you encountered this issue with multiple PDFs? I'm curious if some PDFs are working and others are not working.
If you send a copy of your PDF file to our File Conversion Issue form, we can take a look at the PDF and try to diagnosis any issues. Please reference the link to this forum conversation in the form, so we can link the two conversations.

  • Opening Adobe .pdf linked documents

I have a website designed in DreamWeaver CS4 using several links to documents on the site. Everything works fine, except for one very annoying problem ...
When I click on the link to a multi-page .pdf, the first time it opens to page 1 (per my document default setting). However, the next time I open it, it opens on the last page viewed in that document. Maybe a minor error, but not how it should work. I don't think it's the web caching, since when I hit a refresh (F5), it doesn't change the .pdf page.
    Any suggestions?
    Tom

You can include open parameters to force certain conditions:

Are you sure you want to do this? Having the document open to where the user last left is a product feature that many people like.

  • Want to get Adobe PDF Helper Deleted From My Computer!

Today I was trying to print a coloring page for my son and ended up loading Adobe PDF Link Helper onto my computer somehow.  Now I can't print anything, it just brings up a Save As screen with my document.  I just want it deleted and to go back to normal so that I can easily print again!  Any help??

If its IE then you can go to IE Settings->Manage Add-ons and Disable Adobe PDF Link Helper. Check the same with other browsers, if you have one.

  • I.E 9 + Adobe PDF toolbar ( Convert  )

    Hello All,
I'm seeking some help relating to the Adobe PDF toolbar / add-on not appearing.
For the life of me, this toolbar will not enable itself when I click on the "enable " option.
In Manage Add-ons, under Tools, in I.E9
It shows the following enabled/disabled add-ons
    Adobe PDF - Enabled
Adobe PDF Link Helper - Disabled
Adobe PDF Conversion Toolbar - Disabled
    SmartSelect Class - Disabled
Im using the 32-bit version of IE btw.
No matter if I select enable or choose the ADobe PDF from the drop down list it wont show up.
I've repaired the acrobat installation, removed the createPDF add-on and reinstalled.
Now if I run the browser ( Run as Administrator )
It appears. however, im not giving this user local admin rights just to get this to appear.

So this means you have probably modified the permissions on the system via a policy to restrict the Standard Windows User Account.  This may inhibit access to the ActiveX control that Acrobat/Reader both use to display PDF files in IE.  You will need to use your policy tool and possibly a registry tool to monitor what the difference in access the Administrator has that the User does not and modify permissions to the registry/file system accordingly in order for the ActiveX control to work properly

  • Adobe Reader "Adobe PDF Reader" Addon not installing when Using MSI Installer.

I'm trying to do a silent install of Adobe Reader - and I notice that when I use the EXE installer, with no manual configuration, I have the "Adobe PDF Reader" Addon in Internet Explorer (IE11).
When Installing the MSI - With or without a transform, I do not get the addon. I get a "PDF Link Helper" but no PDF Reader addon. Has anyone experienced this?

    Hi geoffubazi,
The 'Adobe PDF Reader' Addon should install even if you run the .msi file.
Check under the Add on option- 'Run without permission' as shown in the screen shot below and it will list the 'Adobe PDF Reader' Add on

I am trying to open PDF files from safari, but when I click on them they open in a separate window and the information is encrypted. Any ideas on how to get them to open them in Adobe? Any help please!

The pdf is loading as html code. If you save it, it will download as :
    605124.pdf.html
    Change the extension to .pdf
And it opens and works perfectly, I just tested it:

  • Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Pro PC with Windows 7 - error mess "Adobe PDF Printer - not available" Help?

Just loaded my old Acrobat 7.0 Professional on new PC with Windows 7 - Error message "Adobe PDF Priner not available.  Therefore do not have option of Adobe printer when using Word.
Any ideas as to what  - if anythjing I can do?

    Hi,
Technically acrobat 7 not not designed for windows 7 OS. You can try to install the pdf printer manually but it's not guaranteed :
Click the Windows "Start" menu, select "Control Panel," choose "Hardware and Sound," click the "Add a Printer" link under Devices and Printers.
Click "Next" and select "Local Printer Attached to This Computer."
Remove the check from "Automatically Detect and Install My Plug and Play Printer" and click "Next."
Select "My Documents\\*.pdf (Adobe PDF)" in the port selection drop-down menu and click "Next."
Select the "Have Disk" option and click the "Browse" button to open a dialog box.
Select the "AdobePDF.inf" file located in the AdobePDF folder in your Program Files directory under "Adobe" | "Acrobat 9.0" | "Acrobat" | "Xtras."
Select the first item on the list of Adobe PDF Converter options and click "Next."
Type "Adobe PDF" in the field for a printer name and click "Next."
Wait for two minutes for the system to process the drivers and click "Finish" to close the Add a Printer wizard.
    Hope this helps.

  • Anyone know why pdf links won't open? also- malware has hijacked the downloadable file available when clicking on Adobe's file:

Changed OS to Mavericks & pdf links from websites won't open. I also had private browsing on  in safari.
I have acrobat 10.1.10.  I tried to update it when prompted  by auto-updates and it said it can't because  the product has been changed since installed. that can only be the switch to mavericks osx. But it might have prompted me to get version 11 though I only have version 10 & I did the version 10 update in mid-Sept.
Then, I tried going to adobe.com, searched "upda" and got a list of the cs items with icons, plus two text only links, one was acrobat for mac and the last one, "Update manager update (Mac OS)". It said it is to "resolve a common issue with Adobe Update manager on Mac OS". I cliucked that and got some bogus file. When I hit the button on adobe's site, it shows that the file name should be Adobeupdatemanager403.dmg or something very similar to that. Instead in the download list /box I got " installjdownloader.dmg"  I clicked it once & saw terms of service in which they will switch you to use only their search engine, serve ads, etc. So luckily I didn't install it.
Does adobe need to investigate this malware problem? Others might search the way I did.
Anyway, this all started because after installing mavericks, i can't open any pdfs from the web.
Can anyone help me? Thank you very much in advance.
J (usernames were all taken so I have symbols!)

  • Adobe Reader X Help internet link

Hi, could anyone let me know how to fix the problem in Adobe Reader X when you click Help from the menu bar followed by Adobe Reader X Help.  Instead of taking you to an Adobe help page via a web browser, you get the error; "Online Help content cannot be displayed.  Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet" message.
I have uninstalled X and installed Adobe Reader 9 and this works fine and connects to the web.  I have read the link from vilcanator back in Jan 2011 which the reply takes you to
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/reader/using/reader_X_help.pdf which is for a local saved copy of the help file.
However, surely the online help link should work otherwise updates to the help document will not be updated on the downloaded pdf copy.  This has been tested on XPSP3 and W7 Prof, and in IE8 and 9.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Debs

    Hi
F1 brings up the exact same message for me, "Online Help content cannot be displayed.  Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet".  The message appears within Adobe Reader X.  It doesn't reach the browser at all.
When I click Help from the menu bar followed by Adobe Reader X Help, it will take around 5 seconds to have a think, and then show the message.  I've used the setup assistant to set to default and no change.  In Preferences, the Web browser Options for the Internet are all ticked,
    Thanks

  • Linking to Adobe PDF on blog entry crashing iWeb

Help! I have been using iWeb to create a website and blog. In a recent blog entry, i linked to an Adobe PDF file on my computer. The link was functioning and working fine, and then I saved the entry and iWeb crashed. I managed to open it back up by sending photos from iPhoto to iWeb. The other pages of the website work fine, and other blog posts also work fine. I tried publishing and the site published. However, in both iWeb and online, the blog post with the linked PDF is now just blank. The PDF works fine on its own and is not corrupted.
I have tried editing the post as well as deleting it in iWeb, but every time I click either button iWeb crashes and gives me an error message. I cannot duplicate the blog post either. This would somehow be okay, but I cannot add a new blog entry in iWeb either (it crashes). other pages are unaffected. I have not attempted deleting the entire blog portion of the website yet. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the malfunctioning blog post besides deleting the whole website and starting from scratch? Bear in mind the back-up of the Domain I saved was after I saved the blog post. Is there a 3rd party app that I can open my Domain in to manually remove the blog entry, or someway to access the code to delete the data that way?

This JUST happened to me as well after linking to a PDF file but now I can't get iWeb to load up, well, it opens and I can see the inspector pane but that is all...the main window is not there and I can't seem to figure out how to get it.
I also noticed a bunch of iWeb stuff in the trash now in a "recovered files" folder.
    Any ideas?
