Purpose of Configuration utility and shared services????

What is the configuration utility ? what is the purpose of this.
what is the shared services and purpose.
Plese do not say " interview questions, please refer docs" .
Please i need a brief just for some idea.

Config Utility within Shared Services is to configure the Essbase Applications which are designed to work with Shared Services.
With the Configuration Utility, you can configure individual applications once they are registered with Shared Services. You can:
1) Deploy to Application Servers
2) Configure Repositories
3) Choose Application specific option
Depending upon which application you are configuring, you will see different options.
Shared services, as the name suggests, is to manage all the shared components within all the Hyperion applications which can work with Shared Services. Apart from config utility, another big use of its is to manage the users.

I doubt it as when you start up the web applications they try and communicate with the databases, if they fail then the web app won't start up fully.

Error when opening workspace, web analysis and shared services

Hi All,
We installed hyperion 11.1.2, Essbase on a AIX server, with reports etc on a windows 2008 server. when logging onto workspace, web analysis and shared services i get the following error message:
Error 404--Not Found
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
10.4.5 404 Not Found
The server has not found anything matching the Request-URI. No indication is given of whether the condition is temporary or permanent.
If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.
If we re-start the server it sometimes work, but in the morining we have the same issue, can anyone help.

Restart the services. Issue with Oracle Http server. If you restart foundation and other services I can bring workspace up.

I am trying to access the links to Planning and Shared Services but I get the following error message.

The logs would be a good place to start, if you are not sure where to look post your OS and planning version.

Import -Export Utility in Shared Services

Hi,
Can anyone help me to get through the import-export utility of Shared Services?
I need to know
1)How to export security file information stored in shared services using xml file( I need to run it in weekly basis)
2)How to import it back if ever the security file gets corrupted?
Please help me with th same.

If you go with the csv format (yes, I know, you wrote xml) you don't need an internal id field.
Here's a snippet of a file I used to build a group in Shared Services 11.1.1.3:

Planning and Shared Services security disconnect.

Hi,
We have an intermittent problem. We are running 9.3.1 of Planning, Essbase, and Shared Services, etc. We have 6 planning applications on the same server. We use oracle as the database. The problem is at some point in time Planning stops getting updates made in Shared Services. When it happens you can go into the planning application, view the security on any object, and click "Add Access". The "Users and Groups" select box get's populated with "<None Available>". If you bounce the planning service and come back in the "Users and Groups" is populated as expected. It also dosen't affect all of the application or the same applications.
We have an admin group that makes security updates. Mainly just adding users to native groups. When things are working the changes/additions flow through to the planning tables. (HSP_USERSINGROUP,HSP_OBJECT). We gave this group a query to run that shows the access a specific user has in planning. If a user is added to a group in SS they then run the query to make sure the access is granted in planning. When the query doesn't bring back the information they think should be there we know we have the issue and start scheduling an outage to bounce planning.
Anyone else seen this behavior and is there another way to fix this besides bouncing planning?

Essbase and Shared Services - Whether 1 box installtion is good or 2 box in

Hi,
I need to upgrade/migrate 50+ cubes from Essbase 7.1 to Essbase 11.1.2.1.
Whis options mentioned below is better:
1. Install Essbase and Shared Services in one box/machine
2. Install Essbase in one box/machine and shared service in another box/machine.
What will be the best architecture for this?

Personally I would suggest keeping essbase separate especially with the number of applications, though it is probably best discussing your options and infrastructure with a good consultant as these decisions cannot really be made on a forum.

do you have some old external authorization entries in your css.xml? (they occuur if you delete external user directopries from the sort order (see documentation of HSS). In our case we had arudimantary entry there. We deleted it (via HSS UI) en till now its running fine. The error did not occur after the change. (you have to re start HSS service after the change)

I am not sure exactly what you need to know and it depends on the version
Prior to 11.1.2 it communicates using LDAP to port 28089, HTTP to 28080, JDBC to the hss relational database

What happened to Thinkpad Configuration Utility and UltraNav Wizard?

I ran System Update and installed the latest Thinkvantage software -- and two existing utility programs disappeared: Thinkpad Configuration Utility and UltraNav Wizard. I'm surprised because there was no indication this would happen. And I'm concerned about losing function. In particular, I found the Configuration Utility an easy way to configure my laptop.
I have a W500 running Windows XP.

AFAIK, the ThinkPad Configuration Utility isn't supported for any Thinkpad later than the T60 models..... it may partially work on a W500 but there are almost certainly some things that wont work.
If you are happy running unsupported utilities, its available here.....

Publishing iweb in file storage and sharing service?

I am not very versed in creating webpages. I need to upload the iweb website that I made to my school's "file storage and sharing service" otherwise known as CITES Netfiles. I know that somehow I upload my iweb html files SOMEWHERE on this thing and it will show up as my website but i cant seem to figure it out and the the "help" on the phone cant seem to waste their time trying to help me understand. if anybody has any experience with this i would appreciate your help! thanks!

Only the people who setup the Netfiles system will know exactly where you are supposed to upload your files, and also, what your URL is.
I found this support page for the University of Illinois system. You may be using it since you are from Ill. or maybe the page will help you understand the information your tech support people are telling you:

I checked the linked page about how to upload files to the system, and it's a little out of the ordinary. Netfiles appears to use a browser based "Upload Manager" as it's "Front End". http://www.cites.illinois.edu/netfiles/manage.html#upload
Netfiles does appear to support WebDAV (but not FTP)

So you would have to tell iWeb to publish your site to a local folder, then use a program like "CyberDuck", "Transmit" or a program named "Goliath" to upload the site folder that's inside the folder that iWeb created. Special features like blogs and RSS feeds will probably not work with a server like this, although there are ways to link other blog services to your site.
Programs like Dreamweaver support uploading directly to a WebDAV server, but iWeb does not make those settings available, yet.

Cannot Install Thinkpad Configuration Utility and Cannot Find it on Downloads Site

I uninstalled the Thinkpad Configuration Utility and when I try to reinstall the installation fails. It no longer seems to be a download option on the Lenovo support site. Has this utility been withdrawn and if so what replaces it? This link

with the latest BIOS update talks about using the utility to determine which version is installed which would seem an odd thing to do if the utility is no longer supported!

Password reset problems in planning and shared services

We had all our repository passwords expire today(by some default).We had to reset them(and set them to not expire!).
According to the epm 11 admin guide, we have to reconfigure database for all applications using the config tool-which we did.
Now in the config tool, we find that none of the apps are configured(except for the database part) or deployed.When we try to reconfigure/redeploy, it errors out.

What I am saying is when you start up the configurator it checks the information in reg.properties so the configurator can connect to the shared services registry and retrieve information, if the password changed and you started up the configurator I would assume that it could not connect to the registry.
Anyway seeing as you are this far along have you tried updating the password for foundation database in the configurator and then redeploying the web application, does foundation start up?
