  • Gurus, what exactly is the purpose of this NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS para?

Gurus, it would be greatly appreciated if you could also explain what the exact purpose of this NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS parameter and what "LENGTH SEMATICS" mean?
I read some posts in this Forum and got some idea but still don't get the REAL PURPOSE of this variable.
I mean, I have never changed these parameters in my 5 years as an Oracle developer when creating tables or doing anything else for that matter..
I have done all my programming and everything in ENGLISH. I have never used multi-ling apps.
    Our DBs are 10.2.0.4.0s.
Our DB character set is WE8ISO8859P1.
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET is AL16UTF16.
    NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS is BYTE
(1.) Why would anybody want to change this NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS to CHAR??
(2.) Is it only used when you want to store NON-ENGLISH characters like Chinese, Persian etc.?
    (3.) If so why?
(4.) Is there a storage advantage when CHAR is used instead of BYTES? Can you put BOTH as the parameter value?
(5.) Is there issues when searching when non-English characters are stored in the DB??
    (6.) Is AL16UTF16 a multi-byte character set?
(7.) Is WE8ISO8859P1 multi-byte or single-byte character set?? How to find these things???
(8.) What is the real advantage of this NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS column and when should we use it and not use it??
In easy to understand language please.
    thanks in advance.

This is useful only when you use multi bytes character set for you database. Multi bytes characterset means the database stores one character more than one bytes. It can use 2-4 bytes and it can be vary even within one character set. I mean e.g. AL32UTF8 can store an English character in one byte while it can store a Chinese char in 4 bytes only.
VARCHAR2(10 CHAR) means that you define the maximum length of your column in characters no matter how many bytes needed for those to store.
You can also check the docs. There is a really good book called [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch1overview.htm#sthref51]Oracle® Database Globalization Support Guide also [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch3globenv.htm#sthref385]LENGTH SEMATICS has a page in it...

(2.) Is it only used when you want to store NON-ENGLISH characters like Chinese, Persian etc.? mainly yes. but for any other multi-byte character set
    >
(3.) If so why? see above.
    >
(4.) Is there a storage advantage when CHAR is used instead of BYTES? Can you put BOTH as the parameter value?BYTE or CHAR
you can use only one, but you can change the value in your sessions. and you can mix CHAR and BYTES column length definitions in a table.
    >
(5.) Is there issues when searching when non-English characters are stored in the DB??>
(6.) Is AL16UTF16 a multi-byte character set?16 means 16 bites and this character set always uses 2 bytes to store any characters if I know well.
    >
(7.) Is WE8ISO8859P1 multi-byte or single-byte character set?? How to find these things???single.
See MB for multibyte in comment column in [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/applocaledata.htm#sthref1960]Recommended Database Character Sets

(8.) What is the real advantage of this NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS column and when should we use it and not use it??Well in a multi language column where many languages can be stored it is good to use IMHO.
So you can type/store into that column equal amount of Japanese, Chinese or English characters.

  • Purpose of this Forum (Server General) *** Please Read Before Posting ***

Welcome to Windows Server General Forum !
This is an English TechNet forum, Please post your queries in English !
    Scope:
The name "General" has a very broad significance and sometimes that might lead to some ambiguities.
The scope of this forum is to answer General "Server Administration" related queries pertaining
to Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 / R2 and 2012  operating systems.
Again, "Server Administration" has innumerous aspects and at times it becomes bit difficult to categorize
    them.
We try to answer your questions in General or provide troubleshooting support in depth as and when necessary
based on the context of the query.
Questions could be related to AD, GP, Server OS related Queries/issues/errors, general troubleshooting etc…
list is too huge and it's highly difficult to elaborate them here :-)
We understand that this scope and purpose can be a little confusing, we apologize for any confusion.
If you might not know the scope or purpose of this forum, we'll redirect you to read this thread if we need
to explain how this forum works.

    Moving Threads:
It may happen that, your question might have been moved to this forum in an attempt by another moderator from
a different forum to help you find the correct forum or we might move your threads to an appropriate forum as and when necessary.
If a community member gave you the URL/link of a specific Technet forum, then you may request a move to that

    Marking Answers:
We propose a reply (such as a link about where to go ask your question) to a recent question as an answer,
and then we will usually wait one week (~7 days) before we mark it as the answer. We prefer you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) to mark the answer, but we do not require it if you abandon the thread for a long time.
If you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) refuse to let us propose and mark an answer (without telling us why

  • What's the purpose of this audit setting?

Setting up 11g to automatically purge audit records and don't understand the purpose for this when it seems setting a timestamp and scheduled job would accomplish the same?

?= this is called downcast or narrow casting operator in abap.
The purpose of this is assignment between reference variables in which the static type of the target varible more specific than the static type of the source varible.

  • Purpose of this function module:HR_BEN_MAP_SELOPT_TO_DYNSEL

    Hi,
I could see in many benefit standard programs using the function module HR_BEN_MAP_SELOPT_TO_DYNSEL. I just want to know purpose of this.
This FM does not have any documentation to know what it is.
Please share if you know why and how it works.
    Thanks,
    Ravi.

Speaking as someone who happens to be named Michael Broughton ;), let me note that I did not depend on trying to parse the OWB runtime repository to determine the last run status for a given mapping. I used a set of our own tables that we use to audit various processes that run against our database.
Similar to you, we had the notion of a master process and sub-processes. So, our load could be described as:
Insert master process row with status "Started".
    For each mapping to execute:
insert a sub-process row with status "started"
if the last run of the master process ran to "COMPLETE", or the last run of this master process ran to "FAILED" but there is no row for this sub-process with status "COMPLETE", then we need to run the process. run it and update the sub-process row with the return status. If status <> OK, then update master process to status "FAILED" and exit.
otherwise, If we determined that the mapping did not need to be executed, then update the sub-process row with status "COMPLETE"
We put in the stubs for the processes whether we need to run them or not so that if the load fails multiple times, each run will contain the complete list of mappings that were completed.
In point of fact, if you insert the stubs when skipping over mappings during a restart then you can condense the "do I need to run this time" logic to: Run allways unless the last master process run failed but this process succeeded.
How you want to code that query will depend entirely on how you are saving your data.
Hope this helps. I'd offer code snippets but I away from my work 'puter 'til next week.

The only gadget I can think of takes a Mini-usb is my old Garmin Nuvi.  But that doesn't look like something for my Garmin :-).

  • Email message redirect - purpose of this function??

I had always thought that the message redirect function in Mail was effectively a shortcut to start a new message with the identical body to a message already in my inbox.
As a result I've had quite a disaster. I customized some Apple stationery with Christmasy photos to send holiday greetings to some prospective employers whom I recently interviewed with. To avoid having to re-import the photos over and over, I BCC'd myself on the first email and used Message Redirect, then changed the greeting and recipient email for subsequent recipients.
HOWEVER, I've now discovered that the messages when delivered show the previous recipient in the TO: field for some reason. There was no indication that this would happen when the message was being drafted. This is mortifying because these employers likely know each other and now they know who else I've been interviewing with. WHY apple WHY?

    Hi,
This Function module is used for (Extended program check for ABAP/4 programs).
This same same as the extended program check of the SE38 program.
Open any program in ABAP editor.
    Goto program->check->extended program check.
Select the check boxes and execute. It displays all the error and warning of the selected crieteria. Now you can check all these error conditions. The FM is for achieving the same functionality

  • Purpose of this forum?

Is this a replacement for the hideous Yahoo-based forum for disucssion the Sun One Application Framework (aka JATO)?
If so, I am glad it has finally arrived!

There still seems to be much more activity on the Yahoo forum than here (unforetunately). Is the Yahoo forum going to go away so that there is only one place to check.
Im guessing the issue is all of the 'historical' posts on Yahoo not wanting to get stranded/lost.

  • What is the Purpose of this Forum?

If it is to reduce traffic by driving people away, forcing them to log on simply to read to see if there is an answer to their question, or to see if there is a question they might be able to answer, then you guys are on the right track!
If the original idea of having people help each other is still around, forcing them to log in just to read is "dumb as a bag of hammers" (local expression).
Have seen this brain-dead stunt pulled in other forums (e.g. OCWORKBENCH) - after a few weeks, they usually figure it out.
    Sheesh.

    Who are you talking to?

One can take many opinions, and make observations but sarcastic posts like this don't belong in these forums and I wont tolerate them here, it does nothing but start problems. If you have problems with the way MSI does things then I suggest you take it somewhere else, because no one from MSI will see this. You've been told before that this is a user to user forum and you know the rules.

  • Whats the purpose of this group?

And where have the user tips made before the switch gone to? Seems like people are posting regular questions here and there doesn't seem to be any restriction on one can post not like in the old system.
I had 5 tips posted to the Aperture group before the switch, now none are showing up in the Aperture group and when I click user tips under Your Stuff (that's my Your Stuff) I only see two of the tips I wrote.

    Hi Frank,
It seems that the Users Tips Tab only lists some 650 Users Tips that got moved.
Now it is fair to say that many of those went back years.
I have found that at least one of my iChat ones is actually a previous incarnation (the Original which I have since redrafted twice since).
A Search or even using Book marks does seem to get the one I am expecting in some cases although they seems to be in this Discussion tab of this area and not the Users Tip tab.
In some cases I have found the remnants of what used to be the Contributions Threads where the Final Draft has been removed leaving only a "This Tip Is Complete" post.
I had presumed when I found this area again that th Discussions Tab would be for new Contributions and that some time after that they may get moved.
Since Nubz N., the Host that used to look after this area, has not posted yet I have come to the conclusion that it is also work in Progress.

  • Will Installing LTR5 from CC  be compatible with full version LTR 5.7 on desktop ? will it over write any settings i have and what purpose will this serve?

will Installing LTR5 from CC  be compatible with full version LTR 5.7 on desktop ? I bought the standalone LTR5  couple years ago .So  will CC LTR5 overwrite any settings i have in This application ?And simply merge with what I have on desktop without too much trouble ? I have over 10,000 photos in Libraryin LTR5.7   Do  I Leave LTR5 IN CC alone even tho I am  paying for the Photgraphy package at 9.99?. whats the difference between the Lightrooms ? Thanks on clarifying !

There is only one version of the Lightroom program. The Lightroom standalone version, the student version, and the CC version are all the same program. The only difference is in how they are licensed. The standalone version that you are using is activated with a serial number. The CC installation is activated with your Adobe ID and Adobe password. I would suggest that you uninstall your standalone version. Then you will be able to install Lightroom from the creative cloud application manager. The application manager will keep track of updates for you as they are released. And when Lightroom 6 is released you will get it automatically, no additional charge, as part of your creative cloud subscription.
Uninstalling your current Lightroom will uninstall the program, but will leave the catalog and all user files as well as all of your images on the computer. Once you have installed Lightroom from the creative cloud manager you will be able to simply double-click on the desktop icon (which will look just like the old one) and start right where you left off. Everything will be intact, business as usual. I know this because I went through the process I have described when I joined the creative cloud. It happened just as I have described. There were no problems in switching.
