Push email and Gmail (best workaround I've found)

Hi
Having just updated to 2.0 I wanted to use the push email feature but my primary address is a googlemail one which doesn't fully support push! So I found a way of kind of working around this and thought I'd see if others wanted to use it.
First of all you will need:
1: A Gmail address
2: A Yahoo! Mail address (yes this uses yahoo!)
2.5: An iPhone with 2.0 (kind of obvious)
Step 1: setup the gmail address to forward all email to the yahoo address and (key point) archive gmail's copy of the email. This stops the email being forwarded to your iPhone and you recieving 2 allerts per email (really anoying!).
Step 2: Setup your Yahoo! mail account on your iPhone (I used the shortcut that is built in).
Initialy I thought about recieving the email via yahoo (push) and then changing the smtp server to the gmail one, streamlining the whole process but when using the Yahoo! mail shortcut you cannot change the smtp server (kind of stupid). So:
Step 3: Setup your gmail account on your iPhone, I called my yahoo mail account 'Gmail (push)' and my actual gmail account 'Gmail'. Then set this account to only recieve manualy (because you just want to send email from it not recieve!). Then when sending an email from the yahoo mail account (for example replying to an email) there will be the address that the iPhone is using to send the email, just tap that and it will bring up an option to change it. Yes you have to do this all the time, but I figure if it becomes anoying just tap into the gmail account and do it from there, (cmon it's like one extra tap!). Then when the person recieves their email from you it will say from [email protected] not yahoo.com.
This will work with all other kinds of email services that allow email to be forwarded to yahoo.
This may be obvious to some people but alot of people have asked how I did it!
Anyway, anyprobs, let me know!

I found that having gmail archive the incoming emails slows it down considerably (a few seconds if it's sent to the inbox, 4 minutes if it archives). So, I kept my email going to the inbox and live with receiving the same message twice on my iphone 3G.

  • Push email with GMAIL

i have a gmail account, i am having trouble getting push email...some are syaing gmail doesnt do push...
i dont want to switch my account to yahoo or anything like that is there a way around it???

Does anyone know if Yahoo! can be set-up the same way?
I know that Yahoo "Pushes" however it doesn't do it well!  I had the same problem on my 3GS where the Yahoo Push really doesn't work alot of times, and I have had to set it to Fetch every 15 minutes to have it be consistent in coming in.
Can Yahoo! be set-up under exhange as well, and will it work any better?  If so, do you know what the server is?

  • Is there push email for Gmail?

    ?

Gmail doesn't currently offer push email, but they have push calendar and contacts. Also you can set the mail app to fetch every 15 minutes to 1 hour and you will indeed get a beep and icon notification showing how many emails have been fetched from the Gmail server. Gmail can be setup for pop or imap!
I think the big question is do you really plan to get any email so urgent that you can't wait up to 15 minutes between fetches, rather than having it pushed immediately? The Gmail setup works great and with the push calendar and contacts which is much more important in my opinion. I am hoping at some point though Gmail does offer push for their email.

  • Mountain Lion push email - server name best practice

Would anyone be able to guide a newbie with advice on server naming for a mac mini?
I have a public web presence but want to direct incoming email through the server for push email to iOS devices, i.e iPhones.  The server will also be a VPN to the internal network, which will be running a hybrid of mac and win7 clients.  The company webserver will remain at the webhost.
Should I simply call the host machine server.mydomain.com or for example, mailserver.mydomain.com?  I have read some wiki's and advice for naming conventions that have left me confused.  I think I can handle the setting up of the CNAME, A and MX records.  But on the latter point, if someone has a simple English reference they want to offer up, then I would be most grateful.
I want to adopt a sound strategy as my first foundation stone.  Or am I paranoid with this parameter?
    Many thanks in advance.

Okay, I had this problem and solved it as follows:
    1. Deleted any non-functioning iCloud-IMAP accounts from Mail's Preferences. I had two that were working fine, so I left those in place. One of those was the primary iCloud account on my Mac, i.e., the account used for "Find My iPhone/Mac/iPad" and iCloud storage, etc.
    2. Then I quit Mail and restarted my computer.
    3. Went to my other devices and made sure the primary account was the same one there. [Note: It was not -- the primary iCloud account was different on my iPhone versus my Mac, I think this discrepancy might have been the source of the problem, but I don't know.]
    4. I also made sure my wife's Mac uses a different primary iCloud account, one that is not on my machines, although we share one secondary iCloud Mail account (which is not the primary on any device -- it is always a secondary account).
    5. Then, following MChannel's advice upthread, I went into System Preferences > Mail, Contacts & Calendars, and added the formerly problematic iCloud accout that way. I have everything turned on for my primary iCloud account. All of the secondary accounts only have Mail turned on (although I don't think that matters -- you can turn on the other features that are available there if you like).
    6. Opened Mail and voila! -- everything is working fine. Accounts are all set up properly without me even opening Mail's Preferences.

  • Problems with email and gmail on 5800

Just got my nokia 5800 this week i love it except the email application which gets me a headache!
When I add my gmail account and fill in my email and password it works right away no problems there. But then the trouble starts! it will start downloading ALL my headers since I'm a gmail user from the beginning and save most of my emails that means it will start downloading 6000+ headers! I tried several things to stop it but in the end it just kept going until it got all headers. I decided to let it get all headers but that wasn't that much of a good idea because it became ded slow when i opened the emailbox sms is still all fine but as soon as i open the email box its not just slow its SLOW!!! slow as in taking 10 seconds to even scroll up and down...
I also played a bit with gmail only enabling pop or only imap or activate both but it just doesn't Mather it will just get them all. The email app doesn't work when I only enable pop in gmail....
Hope i got the problem clear if not ask away and ill try to clarify things

  • Use Yahoo! Push IMAP and GMail Outgoing Server

Hi. I use GMail as my primary email account, but I really like the Yahoo push IMAP capability.
I have setup my gmail account to forward to my free yahoo account.
How can I setup my iPhone to check my yahoo account (with push imap) but when I send, to use the GMail SMTP server? I can't find the outgoing server setting when I setup the yahoo account on my phone.

Read the reply post carefully people.
There is no mention of a magical new Yahoo account shortcut.
The reply post states that the only short cut that exist is when you set up an e-mail account.
The big one with Yahoo on it, the one you all would have had to of used already.
In other words their is no magic way of doing what you want to do.

  • Notification Light with Incoming Email and Gmail u...

    Hi,
How do I configure email to blink the notification light when an email is received?
Also, I have 3 email accounts configured: Exchange and 2 Gmail accounts. I changed the Gmail accounts to sync email every 15 minutes. The Exchange account works but not the gmail accounts. Gmail has IMAP already enabled.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Scott

The notification light only has options for new messages (SMS, VoiceMail, etc) and Missed Calls. I cant find the option for email.
For Gmail, mine worked when I used the normal Gmail icon when setting it up, but I didnt like it. I set up and Exchange email for my gmail so that it would sync my calendar as well. (The normal gmail option wont do this). I do remember with Anna that I had to DECLINE the terms of service when setting up the email for it to work. The last tidbit would be to check your retrieval settings. Mine first defaulted to 9am to 9pm Mon-Friday. Hope something helps.

  • AppleMail, my own domain email and Gmail

I have my own domain name email which has started to get too many spam emails.
I'm aware that running the email through the gmail servers will help get rid of most of it.
So...i need help setting it up and using Mac Mail to manage all my emails still.
I think i am almost there - but a few things are going wrong.
firstly i have managed to configure things in Gmail, by setting up "retrieve other account". All that seems easy enough.
The problem occurs on Apple Mail.
Basically i want to be able to get all my emails coming through Apple Mail, so filtered through Gmail first. And then i want to be able to send email from my normal domain name, rather than Gmail.
So far, i have the incoming STMP to gmail, and the outgoing using my normal server, but this doesn't seem to work.
Any help in doing this is much appreciated.
    Adrian,.

You cannot use your own domain name with iCloud email - it handles only its own email. The only thing you can do is forward email from your domain's email account to iCloud, but then you can't answer using it as you can only send using iCloud's outgoing server with the iCloud address as the 'From' address.

  • Work email and gmail both on BB w/separate outlook icons. Gmail emails go into both.

My work gave me a blackberry that was already set up with outlook for my work email.  I installed facebook on my BB.  I also went thru set up wizard and set up a 2nd email address for my gmail account.  This installed a 2nd outlook icon where my gmails go into.  However, all of my gmail emails also go into the outlook icon where my work emails go.  They go into both.  How can I get it so that gmail emails go into the gmail account outlook icon only, and not the work one?
Also, my facebook notifications go into my work email on BB, not the gmail account on BB, even though my facebook account has my gmail email as the associated email address.  How do I resolve this?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
For the BES vs BIS issue, please see this post:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=9500&message.id=30149#M30149
For the FB issue, I believe that FB integrates to the Messages application on the BB rather than to the specific GMail BIS icon.
Your Messages icon is not your work icon, btw -- it is the Messages app on your BB, which handles all messaging on your BB.

  • Can I keep both .mac email and gmail email if I go to icloud?

I have a gmail account that I'd like to keep primary, but would also like to keep my .mac email. Is there a way to do this? thanks in advance

Apple says if your .mac account is expired before you transfer to iCloud, then you will not be able to use it. It doesn't say you can use if if it is not expired and you transfer it before the deadline. Article here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4139
GMail is IMAP and syncs to all devices if set up properly. You do not need iCloud for that and iCloud is for Apple email only.
The iCloud.com email account is really just another IMAP account. and will only will show Apple addresses. You can set up both in Mail to see all messages from both accounts. A big difference in the iCloud email is it is set up automatically in Mail for you just by signing into iCloud on the computer and checking the box to use email.
You can also check email for iCloud at the iCloud.com website, just as you can check your GMail's messages at the gmail.com website.

  • Gmail push email not working on iPad 2 wifi.

    Hi all!
I'm having a somewhat annoying issue with my iPad. It's not receiving any mail via push, instead I have to manually fetch them every time. In spite of the push-settings and rebooting. For some reason my iPhone does get the push email, and so when I hear the new mail-sound from my iphone, I go check it from my iPad. Frankly, it seems a bit redundant.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

I am having the same issue. Is there any resolutions yet?
I have done standard correction stuff.
    eg:
    - Restarted the iPad
    - Disconnected the WiFi & 3G connections. Then reconnected.
    - etc

  • Help - Now get same email in both email account and gmail

I have a droid_razr maxx.  Ever since the update I had the same synching issues everyone had except that I was still getting my emails.  I just always had sync error notifications.  Last week I resynched my email and gmail account and wow - the sync errors went away.  BUT NOW I get the same email twice, both in my email and my gmail.  I went into email and unsynched my gmail account but it still is happening.  I have enough problem managing my emails without having to manage the same emails in two accounts!  I'm sure this has a simple answer.  Please help.

Thanks for contacting the VZW Support community about this issue, Splitrailfence. Thanks also to my friend Ann154 for her assistance. Splitrailfence, I can see why getting the same email through two different clients can be annoying. If I understand correctly, the duplicate emails are being sent to a single email email address but you're getting copies of the messages in both your Gmail account and your email account. Are both the Gmail and email clients on your RAZR Maxx set to monitor the same account? If so, who is the provider (Yahoo! or Hotmail or Gmail or other)?

  • How can I have unified contacts across outlook, iphone and gmail?

I am new to iPhone and cannot seem to get something that I really enjoyed on my blackberry, unified contacts across all three platforms.  I use Outlook for work and Gmail for personal.  I had it set up on my blackberry that I had one set of contacts, not separated by outlook or gmail.  The goal was to have the same set of contacts in all three places.  Any changes made in any place, outlook, gmail, or blackberry, was reflected in all three places.
Is there a way to do this on the iPhone?  I had set up my iPhone to sync with gmail and outlook, but it created two sets of contacts, so when I searched for a person, it would show two or more records.  I just want one contact list.  Is there a way to turn off the contact seperation and just have one list?  I just want to be able to make a change in any of the three places and have it reflected across all three.
I have both work and gmail set up via exchange for push email and syncing.

The contacts had to be separated on your Blackberry but were viewed as combined, which is possible with the iPhone's Contacts app.
With my iPhone, I sync business contacts over the air with my company Exchange account, and I sync personal contacts over the air with iCloud account - former MobileMe account. My personal iCloud contacts are also synced with the Address Book on my Mac and I would be doing the same with my Exchange business contacts but we aren't using a compatible Exchange Server software in order for me to do that. If I was doing so, my business contscts and my personal contacts would be separated in the Address Book on my Mac and I would have the ability to view business and personal contacts combined or separately as I can with my business and personal contacts on my iPhone.
Does Outlook support syncing your Gmail online contacts so your personal contacts would be kept synchronized between the three - Outlook, Google online address book, and your iPhone?
If you are syncing contacts over the air with your iPhone and syncing contacts direct with a supported address book app on your computer via the iTunes sync process, the contacts will be duplicated on your iPhone - one set stored locally, and one set stored in the online address book for the email account.

  • Why can't I push emails to 2 different MobileMe accounts on the iPhone?

Makes no sense since I can set up a Yahoo! Mail account as push alongside a single MobileMe account with push mail as well.
Every time I set it up, the second account only gives me an option for Fetch or Manual.

I have the same problem. Here's my setup:
    1) I have my own MobileMe account that I use for Mail, Contacts and Calendar syncing on my iPhone and Mac
    2) My wife uses my MobileMe account for Contacts and Calendars so we use the same calendars and contacts. We just signed her up for her own MobileMe (trial) account to use just for her own PUSH email.
On her iPhone calendars and contacts sync perfectly via push. When I added her own MobileMe account to use for mail it only gives her the option for either FETCH or MANUAL! This makes no sense whatsoever. I figured it might have something to do with having my MobileMe account associated with her iPhone as well, so I deleted that association but still no options but FETCH or MANUAL for her mail. Prior to getting her own MobileMe account, I her her set up with YahooMail for push email and she was given the option for PUSH.
All of this makes no sense and is highly frustrating! I wonder if there is a reason and a fix? Anyone?

  • Bitten by the Apple once again--Push email not working on iOS

I can't believe they screwed up again just like MobileMess. This is what I get for trusting there was NO way they'd make the same mistake and, again, being an early adopter.
Anyone RELIABLY getting push email from iClod (not misspelled by accident) on iPhone 4 running iOS 5?  If so, has it always worked and, if not, what was your fix?

Doesn't work for me, and it's really getting on my nerves!
I use Hotmail, and my husband used Yahoo.de.  Neither of us can receive via PUSH emails and have to open the mail app to check if anything important is there.  Doesn't sound like PUSH to me, obviously it does to Apple.
WHY OH WHY was none of this picked up during BETA testing????!!!!!!!
If we turn off iCloud, then I believe it may work, but then you are unable to use FINDMYIPHONE, so we have to decide what's more important?  I find it outrageous!
I've tried deleteing all my email accounts, but that did NOTHING.  I've toggled push on and off; left the phone off for over half and hour and rebooted.  No improvement.
    VERY POOR service from Apple.
