Push notifications unlock iPad screen, leads to battery drain.

Question

When my iPad receives textual push notifications (generally from Prowl, but also from other apps like Delivery Status Touch, etc.) the iPad screen wakes up. Unfortunately, it also sometimes unlocks the screen rather than displaying the notification bubble on the lock screen. I have my iPad set to never auto-lock (I use it as a second display and other things during business hours).
When this happens during the middle of the night while I'm sleeping, my iPad turns on and doesn't turn off, potentially leading to an impact on battery and screen life. (Luckily I plug in my iPad to charge at night, but still, not everyone does.)
Am I alone in this problem?

Based on your preference stetting and the other responses I am seeing here, perhaps my first comment was too oblique to be understood. I have a WiFi only model and simply turn off this connection to both save battery timr and to prevent such notifications from reaching my iPad. As I do not own a WiFi + 3G model, I do not know if it is possible to turn off both WiFi and 3G connections altogether but assumed it might be possible. If not, then there is still Steve's option.
