Pushing for more time with a 4.5 year old PowerBook G4 1.33GHZ (12-inch).

I have a PowerBook G4 1.33GHZ (12-inch) running Mac 10.4.11 that I purchased in the summer of 2004. It's been a great laptop, and in fact still continues to be with most of the things I use it for.
Memory: original 512 total RAM (256 built in, 256 DDR SDRAM)
Hard Drive: original FUJITSU MHT2060AT 55.89 GB (i.e. "60")
Battery: Full Charge Capacity (mAh) of 945; 259 cycles. Replaced in Fall 2007 in the battery replacement program.
Battery AC Adaptor: heavily modified due to needed repairs See here for what I did.
So, a laptop that's lasted 4.5 years is pretty good, but I'd like to push for ~2 years more if possible.
I use the laptop for web-browsing, document editing and presentations. I do a little bit of design (GIMP) and computation (Octave), and run a MAMP set-up for wordpress development at times, but currently it's almost fast enough for my needs.
What would be recommended for upgrade? I'm already thinking about:
*getting a memory upgrade. (the 1GB options on this page. Anybody have experience with these? I'm a poor grad student, so cost does matter, but I don't want to get something that doesn't improve my computer too.).
*getting a new battery soon (current one lasts 40-60 minutes).
To justify those costs to myself, I'm wondering about the probability of a component failing. The possible components I can imagine are:
Hard-drive
Display
Motherboard
keyboard/trackpad
Anyone know average lifespan of those components for this computer? How risky is it to push for another 2 years?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
To see if additional memory would help for what you run, in applications/utilities, open up Activity Monitor and look at the system memory tab, specifically at page ins/outs. If page outs is more than 10% to 15% or so of page ins, you can use more memory. That says your system doesn't have enough physical memory for what you run, and has to free up memory by moving it to the hard drive fairly often. The values reset whenever you reboot the system.
On memory, you want to use quality memory, especially for a 1.33Ghz system. I'd recommend Crucial (http://www.crucial.com), Kingston - not their value-ram though (http://www.kingston.com) or Samsung, which is sold through distributors. Crucial is $53 and Samsung from OWC in your link is $55. You can usually find a 5% discount or free shipping coupon for Crucial on the web. Kingston memory is running $64+.
Hard drives are one component that can fail, typically in the 3-5 year range. If you don't have it already, SMARTreporter is a neat monitoring program that puts an icon on your menu bar, which by monitoring the SMART status, can sometimes give you early warning of an impending failure. You can get this free utillity at http://www.corecode.at/smartreporter/ . Of course, having a regular backup regimen is your best insurance against hard drive failure.
Display, logic board, and keyboard failures do happen, but not with great frequency. I wouldn't spend time considering that, epecially since there's not much you can do as preventative maintenance.
One thing I do is to periodically run OnyX, which you can download from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Run the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs will help keep your disk in good order. Again, having a recent backup is good insurance when doing anything to the hard drive.

    HI
XML Publisher(XDODTEXE) in EBS taking more time with the same SQL in TOAD.
The sql has 5 union clauses.
It takes 20-30 minutes in TOAD compared to running through Concurrent Program in XML Publisher in EBS taking around 4-5 hours.
The Scalable Flag at report level is turned on with the JVM options set to -Xmx1024m -Xmx1024m in Concurrent Program definition.
Other configurations for Data Template like XSLT, Scalable, Optimization are turned on though didn't bounce the OPP Server for these to take effect as I am not sure whether it is needed.
Thanks in advance for your help.

But the question is that how come it is working in TOAD and takes only 15-20 minutes?
    with initialization of session ?
    what about sqlplus ?
Do I have to set up the the temp directory for the XML Publisher report to make it faster?

Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up elements receive message “Some ot the application components are missing from the Application directory. Please reinstall the application.” How do I correct this problem without disturbing application in main user account?

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11?  This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.

no archive/ backup is perfect, HD clones can be set to make incremental additions, same as time machine however, though they are more time involved in doing so.

Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
    Drawbacks:
    1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
    2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
    3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
    4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
    5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
    6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
    7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
    8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
    9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
    10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
    11. In the case of Time Capsule, wifi data storage is a less than ideal premise given possible wireless data corruption.
    12. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    13. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
    2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
    3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
    #2. HD archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
    Advantages:
    1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
    2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
    3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
    4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
    5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
    Drawbacks:
    1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
    2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    Advantages:
    1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
    2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
    3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
    4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
    5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
    6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
    7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.
    #4. Online archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
    2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
    Advantages:
    1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
    2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
    3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
    4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
    5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
    #5. DVD professional archival media
    Drawbacks:
    1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
    2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
    Advantages:
    1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
    2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
    3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
    4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
    5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
    6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
    7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
    8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.
[*Level-4 data security under development as once-written metallic plates and synthetic sapphire and likewise ultra-long-term data storage]
    #6. Cloud based storage
    Drawbacks:
    1. Cloud storage can only be quasi-possessed.
    2. No genuine true security and privacy of data.
    3. Should never be considered for vital data storage or especially long-term.
    4. *Level-0 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. Quick, easy and cheap storage location for simplex files for transfer to keep on hand and yet off the computer.
    2. Easy source for small-file data sharing.

  • Five year old Powerbook, time to let go?

I'm Hangin'On to a five year old Powerbook G4 17in. Two years ago the computer crashed and I was able to get it back to normal with an 'Erase and Install' from the disc. Last week it happened again. I had more trouble getting it back, but was able to repeat the 'Erase and Install' and now the computer works 80% of the time. When symptoms resurface, the performance slows greatly, the "spinning ball of death" taunts me for minutes, and occasionally the screen goes blank and I have to force a Shut Down. When I restart it, I get a message that the "OS unexpectedly quit".
There's also a buzzing sound from the left side.
Is it time to let her go?

    Hangin'On:
There will always be newer, faster, more powerful computers coming along. Any computer you buy today will be old in a couple of years. The question is, does the computer you have do for you what you need to have done. I would love to get a MacBook Pro, but my wife asks me whether I think I really need one, and I can't honestly say that I do. My eight year old Pismo does for me all that I need to have done. Of course, a MBP will do things I can't do with this baby, but at what cost?
Now, back to your PB G4. Installing a new HDD will breathe new life into your computer. Here are the steps:
    • Select and purchase a new HDD.
    • Install the new HDD in your computer.
    • Format and erase the new HDD.
    • Install OS and migrate stuff from old HDD
Your computer will support a 2.5" Parallel ATA/IDE drive up to 250 GB. Here is a list of available drives for your computer. Use the filters in the sidebar to screen for capacity, Manufacturer etc. You can compare drives by checking the boxes then clicking the Compare button at the top. When you see the drive you want, click the button to Compare Prices to the right.
Once you have the drive in hand you will need to install it in your computer. Here are step by step directions for installing the HDD. Once you have the HDD, post back with questions about the directions. At that time I will also post additional tips.
In the interest of keeping this post manageable I will post later with directions for formatting the newly installed HDD, and installing the OS and migrating your data.

  • BCC push taking more time

    Hi Experts,
We are using ATG 9.4 and we have around 70 thousand products, i think its not large number. but when we push projects from BCC it is taking more time.
here is my problem- we have 2 data centeres ,each data centere is having around more than 100 instances (agents) . we need to push to each data center. BCC is taking more time to push(hours). can you suggest me , what best can be done to avoid those issues. any soulution would be much appreciated
    Thanks

We usually find performance problems can be traced back to the database layer.
Have you considered cleaning up the versioned schemas, either by using the OOTB purging functionality:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26180_01/Platform.94/ATGCAProgGuide/html/s1301purgingassetversions01.html
or a complete rebaselining of your Publishing environment
For the two data centres you may want to consider using a product like GoldenGate

  • I need to able to search for calendar entries that are over one year old.

I am an old Palm OS user and have used the calendar on it to track my clients visits/service for the last 15 years.  By searching the customers name on the palm, it would bring up every entry I had keyed in for them, so I could immediately know how old their equipment was, what service had been done, etc.  I also used the calendar to track my daily and weekly sales.  I was disappointed to find that the ipad does not search for any entries older than one year.  Is there something that can fix this or is there an app that could be used in the way the palm was?  Thanks

Well, that would depend on what calendar you are using.
If you are simply relying on the calendar on the device, well, that's not very smart.  Restoring from backup should put everything back.
If the calendar is synced with another service, like Google, iCloud, Exchange, do the entires still exist there?
If the calendar is synced with Outlook or iCal on your computer, do the entries still exist there?

  • Is there an update for airport extreme that is about seven years old?

is there an update for an airport extreme purchased about seven years ago?  The signal in my whole house goes down and has to be re-booted quite often.
I had a service call down by my cable company and their "arris" box in my house sends out a decent signal but the airport extreme gets "bottle-necked" per the service man
    Thanks!

Check the firmware on your AirPort Extreme. The last firmware version for it was version 5.7, however, there were some fairly well-known problems with it that would cause it to become apparently unreponsive on occasion, and require the need to completely power down the Extreme.
If it is running firmware version 5.7 or 5.6 try downgrading it to firmware version 5.5.1. The older AirPort Extreme had a problem with 5.7 that would cause the problem you described, and 5.6 was even worse.
In other words its two most recent firmware updates made things worse. Having experienced this identical problem with two 802.11g/b Extremes, I suspect they had a fundamental flaw that Apple never admitted, but solved with the introduction of the new 802.11n models.
If you are running the most recent version of AirPort Utility for Lion, the option to upload firmware 5.5.1 to your Extreme is not likely to be available though. I am reasonably sure that AirPort Utility 5.5.3 will include the ability to upload an earlier firmware version to your Extreme.
Try it. It could make things better, or worse, or could introduce an entirely new problem, but you can always undo your troubleshooting by uploading the most recent firmware again.
Ultimately you may come to the same solution as I did, which was to buy a new 802.11n Extreme.

  • Disable internet access only for specific time with GPO?

I need to be able to disable web browsing during specific times (night shift for example). I know I can create a GPO policy and set a 'fake proxy' for IE that would blanket kill browsing but I don't want to have that enabled 24/7. Is there any way to do only from like 5pm - 5am.
Or is there a better way to do this? I know I could setup a Squid Server and set time limits through there. Was just curious if it could be done through AD.
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

Ok, I just thought of a way to do it with GPO.Create the gpo to setup the fake proxy setting and also lock out the proxy setting to keep the users from disabling the setting.Setup targeted application of the GPO based on a specific AD group. Depending on if you setup the GPO policy under computer or user you can add either user names to this AD group or add computer names to this group (you could also create a nested group so you are only adding and removing one name from the targeted GPO group). Setup the task scheduler to add and remove names to this gpo application group based on time of day. Understand there will be a delay of up to 2 hours between the time the user is added to this group and the application of the GPO to the target computer. It would appear a bit clunky, but it should work. The squid route would be a bit more...

  • Data Overages for first time with no change in usage. What's up?

I see there are numerous posts about unexplained data overages. I think Verizon is manipulating the data changes somehow.  I have always used about 2 gig a month, but had a 4gig plan. Never went over. Then one morning I had a text that I had used 75% of my date. Somewhat surprised, but I drove to work, none of my devices on. When I turned on my phone it said I had used 90% and within minutes said I had exceeded my data. I called Verizon with a lot of questions as how could that have happened. I was not given a response that made any sense but was told they would increase my data plan to 6gig for no additional charge.  I agreed. Now at the end of this month the same thing happened. I went over my 6 gig with no changes in my usage. I do not stream music or watch videos, etc. No way I could have used that much. It showed I used 1.6 gig in one day, that's what I used to use for a month. Something is not right. What agency governs cell phone companies. We all need to report this.

    Softtailrn
It all comes down to those "pre-installed apps" and their updates that just won't stop downloading.
today, I realized that my phone was running kinda slow, so I went into the application manager and started deleting apps, and their updates. It took me a good hour to get all the useless ones out of the way, when I accidentally deleted all my contacts. Since my contacts was really the only thing I cared about, and now they're gone, I decided to go ahead and do the factory reset. Why not? So I started all over again like it was a new galaxy s5. My contacts came back no problem, and so didn't all those  useless apps I deleted, so on my way back to the app manager to start deleting them again... I checked my data usage and how many gigs I had just freed for myself... a whole 8.57G out of 16G now freed up! nice right? Yea, then I see that little exclamation point in the top left corner, it said 30 apps have been upgraded, and there was nothing I could do to stop this, I don't want to go through all those apps and updates for a 3rd time. I thought,  how much data is that gonna use? Turns out... 2.74Gs in 20 seconds and that was olny just 20apps, out of what 130 apps? That are being updated regularly everyday
Now I'm starting g to make sense of it now... my parents knew we were being had, for awhile now, just didn't know how. We've been talked into getting a 4G family data plan, charged over 900.00$ verizon bill, charged for data overages where we too don't use our phones for anything other than phone calls, or looking up something on the net. No music, no movies, none of that fun stuff. I see that in a matter of 20 seconds our data limit of 3G is just 1/4 away from gone, and that's just, what? 1 or 2 unwanted updates away from another overage charge? So I try to stop these updates by selecting in the Google play settings "do not update apps" but that simply doesn't work. It seems by simply connecting to WI-FI will negate my command.. and the updates keep coming. Only by shutting off both mobile data and WIFI seems to stop the updates... temporarily. It's hard to explain but it looks like verizon is using Google play app updates to max out data, and verizon is charging us for overages 2 and 3 times a month! They manipulate the data to make money, Stealing, and we're not the only ones, you caught them too ^^^. This is criminal, and something does indeed need to be reported to a proper governing body above verizon.
This has been going on in my family unnoticed for years, until now.
Resulting in ridiculous bills, coupled with false overage charges. Causing nothing but heartache and stress for my family, but we still pay... God I don't know why. But we do, and they just keep Taking.
I found out their heartless corporate bullying tactics against the little people, and you did too ^^^ they just keep throwing new "plans" and "6 more gigs" at us.
They sneak these updates right under our noses, blow up our data and threaten us to pay, or else we'll be blackballed from cable/Internet everywhere.
this is nothing else but criminal, rigging the game.
We don't want more gigs, we want our money and out mental health back!

  • Installing ITunes for 4th time with same IPod  !!

Because I've had to have manual factory-default restarts performed on two different computers, I'm about to have to re-install ITunes for the 4th time. But, I'm still using the same IPod...I believe I've read that the max about of Itunes installs you can have for one Ipod is 3.
    1. Is that info correct?
    2. Does that pertain to my situation?
    3. Is there some type of work-around that I could do while I still have this 3rd version installed on my computer?
    PLEASE HELP!

i had read it on itunes somewhere, but i just looked it up on the apple site...this is what i found:
    +Home Sharing.+

Browse iTunes libraries on up to five authorized computers on your home network and import whatever you like. You can also automatically import new purchases made on any of the computers.+
so it seems it's 5 computers and not 3 and still doesn't say too much info about it. thing is, in my case, even though this will be the 4th install it's only been 2 computers.
