Put iTunes libraries on home network

This seems like a simple request, but I can't find any posts that offer a
simple solution.
My wife and I each have an iTunes account. Naturally, we also each have our own iTunes library, our own songs, podcasts, etc.
We also have two PCs in our house, connected by a home network. We use both
PCs, and use the same Window's user account.
My wife and I would like to be able to sit at either computer, open iTunes,
choose either of our iTunes libraries, and then download, transfer, play, rate, etc. the songs, podcasts, for that library.
All the posts I've read suggest that you need a computer engineering degree to
set something like this up. Or perhaps I'm missing something.
I was hoping I could just put my iTunes library (the itl, xml, and mp3s, etc.) on a network folder, like Public Music\His_iTunes\...
And do the same with my wife's iTunes library:
Public Music\Her_iTunes\...
Then when we open iTunes (on either computer), we just hold down SHIFT and
chose the library we want.
Will that work? I can't use iTune's Home Sharing feature because it requires using one iTunes account.
Thank you.

Yes...this is all possible. Everything you want to do with this can be done with a little patience. Here's one setup, which is close to what we have here.
Two computers, each with iTunes installed. Desktop computer contains the one large folder full of mp3s. One iTunes library on the laptop for her, one on the desktop for me. Both libraries have been built using File>Add folder to library, choosing the (desktop computer) folder and selecting desired mp3s. Both libraries do not have to contain the same stuff. Just build each library with appropriately desired stuff. After libraries are complete, search each computer for "*.itl" files. Most likely it will be in "Computer>Local Disk>Users>*whatever user you are>Music>whatever you named your library*.
When each user opens iTunes using the shift key, they will need to choose the library they want to work with. Make sure both computers are networked and connected before you attempt to open iTunes. You can make playlists and sync and do whatever. When you close then reopen iTunes without using the shift key, it will default to the last library that was open on that computer.
I haven't experimented with what happens if you open one library on both computers at the same time. Not expecting that to go well. Also, I would hesitate to modify info such as album art, song title, artist, etc while both iTunes libraries are open on both computers. (I don't even recommend using iTunes to update that info...look into getting a program called TagScanner from cnet.com.)
That was alot, real fast...if you have any questions, I'll be monitoring this thread. We have 2 computers, 3 iPods, 5 libraries. I can probably help you with any configuration on this issue.

  • What is the best way to set up iTunes on our home network so all family members have access to all of our itunes library, even music we don't have on the cloud?

I have five different people using 10 different apple devices on one itunes account in our family.  We have had trouble sharing.  What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?  We have purchased music that sits on icloud, but we also have music we have imported from our previous cd library.  Our itunes program keeps crashing and dumping everyone's playlists.  So far we have all been using just the one desktop computer to sync to because we can't figure out how to share the same librarly and playlists on multiple computers in our home so devices can be synced at any location as well as playlists and purchases be made.

What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?
One iTunes library per person.  One iTunes account per person.
If people wish to share songs, they can make copies.
When the inevitable day comes when the kids get older, you will not have to come back here and post asking how all that stuff can get separated!

  • Is there a way to open automatically open different iTunes libraries in different networks?

I know how to select which iTunes library to open upon launch -- manually. But I'd like iTunes to automatically open a different library, depending on where I am:
    1) open the library on my external drive when I'm on my home network, but
    2) open the library on my Macbook Pro when I'm on any other network.
Can you think of a way to automate this?

If you setup the PDF with appropriate chapter labels for the pages - yes.

  • Share iTunes Library on home network and edit from all computers?

I'd like to share my iTunes library on the 3 Macs on my home network and be able to edit the library (add songs, edit titles, add cover art, etc.) from any of the computers. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

We're attempting to work out the same trick on another thread.

  • Why can't my apple tv 2 see my macbook itunes libraries with home sharing enabled on both devices?  Same Apple id.

I cannot see my macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.8 itunes libraries on my apple tv 2.  i have disabled and re-enabled home sharing on both devices using the same Apple ID.  I used to be able to see it but not anymore.  There has been a router upgrade to Linksys E2000 but i haven't been able to find anything that would inhibit home sharing.

Switched back to the old D-Link and all is available.  Looking for solutions from Linksys.

  • Sharing aperture libraries over home network

My Aperture (3.4) Library is on my Mac (OS-X 10.8.2). I want to access from my MacBook (OS X 10.7.5) Aperture (3.4) over my home network.
When I 'Switch to library' on the MacBook and select the Aperture Libraray on the Mac I get the message:
'Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.'
    Al suggestions will be appreciated!

Sorry, that is not possible. Aperture is not a network database system, and an Aperture library can only be accessed by one user at a time.
The Aperture library must be stored on locally mounted volume, formatted MacOS X extended.
See this support article by Apple:

  • ITunes on a home network. How do you have it set up?

Anybody out there running Windows Home Server and iTunes? How are you doing it?
Here's what I'm doing so far...
I recently purchased an HP MediaSmart Server EX470. I have it all set up and connected with my three CPUs (desktop, laptop, and mediaPC). The server came with Firefly which allows music (music only) to be streamed to itunes in a shared music folder. The music shows up in iTunes under the shared label and one is able to play music from the server. But that is it. All you can do is stream the music through iTunes, nothing else. I want to be able to edit my music library through all three computers and having it set up this way doesn't let you do that. So, I tried something else.
First, I mapped the music folder on the server as a network drive and then pointed iTunes on each computer to that folder. Next, I copied the iTunes library folder (which includes the .itl and .xml files, and album artwork) to the music folder on the network. Then, I opened each iTunes on each computer, held the shift key down, and opened the iTunes library file on the network. Viola! A shared network iTunes library on three home computers, right? Here's the kicker. I can only have iTunes open on one computer at a time. Can anybody think of a work around?
I guess I could have three libraries on the server and then sync them using Sync Toy, but that seems like a little much. Anybody else out there in my same boat? I'd be extremely interested in what you have set up.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to work either. When I'm at work and wanting to open a data file that is being used by somebody else, I'll get a message stating it I can't open it or only do a "read only" copy. iTunes essentially does the same thing on my network. Once you open iTunes on a second computer, your edits to the .itl file won't save.

  • I am unable to access one of the iTunes libraries through home sharing

I have 3 computers in my home and we all share music. However suddenly I am not able to access one of the libraries from the other computers. This was never an issue before. What happens is when I click on the library that is giving problems it shows like it is loading the library and then it goes back to the library for the computer that was trying to access the other one. The home sharing is enable and the latest version of iTunes is running. Any suggestions?

  • Put itunes on my HOME and my WORK

Can I have the same itunes at my work that I do have at home? Do I just log on and it's there or do I have to move the music on like cd's that I have backed up'?

Each iTunes is separate you have to add content to each one on it's own. One other thing, if you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • IPhones can't access Home Sharing w/ One Computer & Multiple iTunes Libraries

I have a Mac Pro that I am using as a iTunes media server for my home entertainment network. This computer has two user accounts. Each user account has it's own iTunes Library. One is for my kid's movies and the other is for my wife and I's movies. I have both of the libraries setup for Home Sharing and for the most part this works perfectly for viewing with Apple TV and the laptops that we have. Both libraries are available for use on these devices.
Where I am having trouble is with iPhones. My wife and I have iPhone 6s and when we open the Videos app it shows that only one library is available. Her phone might show the kid's library as available and mine will show the other library or visa versa. The libraries are not available at the same time on our iPhones. As I stated, our other devices are fine and are able to access each library when desired.
As an example, Jack's Library & Jane's Library are available under shared, seen in the inserted image. In my situation, only one of the libraries would be available even though both libraries are setup for Home Sharing.
I have tried the following (none resolved the issue):
    Close/Re-Open iTunes
Turning Home Sharing off/on for each of the iTunes Libraries
Turning Home Sharing off/on for each of the iPhones
    De-Authorize/Re-Authorize my Mac Pro
    Reboot Mac Pro

Home Sharing is for something else - sharing media between 2 computers, not one.
There aren't any instructions for home sharing for two accounts on one computer, because you can only have itunes open in one windows user account at a time.

  • 3 user accounts on Mac with separate iTunes libraries

I have 3 user accounts on a Mac with separate iTunes libraries.  Home sharing is turned on for all 3 and all use the same home sharing login Apple ID).  On both Apple TV 2's all 3 libraries appear under "computers", however, only one is accesible (always the account that has been first opened on the computer) with the others saying "Could not connect to "xx Library".  When I have one home sharing turned on for this computer it is always accesible from the Apple TV and I can open up iTunes with the same home sharing ID from another Mac in the home and it will appear on the Apple TV with no problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your response ckuan.  These 3 libraries are using separate user accounts on the computer and when all 3 accounts have itunes open at the same time, the iPads have no problem seeing all 3 itunes libraries through home sharing, and for a brief moment yesterday, I was able to get one of the Apple TV's to connect to all 3, however that did not last long before only one was available and the other two eded up having the "could not connect error".  Do you have any other ideas?  I have already submitted this problem to Apple as I am sure that before the update (whether it was the Apple TV update or the iTunes update) I had no problem doing this.

  • Why can't Apple TV's and iOS devices see home sharing on my Windows 7 computer when iTunes libraries on other computers on the same network and connected to the same Home Sharing can?

I have never previously had any problems with Home Sharing, I have always found it to be completely reliable as advertised. I have 2 computers in the house, (one MacBook and one Windows Desktop) connected to the same Home Sharing account, connected to the same BT Home Hub 4. My situation is that I have nearly 2TB of data of which I would like to share with the home wirelessly, in my mind the desktop is the logical place for this to be shared from.
When running, iTunes on this desktop broadcasts to other iTunes libraries, but no other iOS devices or Apple TV's connected to the same Home Sharing account cannot see it.
I have tried turning Home Sharing off, and then turning it back on, closing iTunes, restarting the computer, going to Network and Sharing Centre and unticking IPv6 in the network adapter properties, even completely wiping the computer and reinstalling Windows 7.
One of the Apple TV's in the house was recently purchased by my parents with the promise from me that everything would work seamlessly... so far it isn't and I am frustrated that the Apple technology that I have come to rely on isn't working as expected.
One thing that has occurred to me upon writing this is that it is a very large amount of data, and I have not attempted to share this with another computer that is currently working and broadcasting it's Home Share fine.
I am sorry if I have ommitted any important details, any further questions don't hesitate to ask. I would be so grateful of any suggestions, my parents are depending on me.

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • HT202213 I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each have unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using home sharing?

I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each of us have separate and unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using Home Sharing?  Everything that I can find talks about sharing between networked computers, but this is all on the same computer.  I just want to share between ITunes accounts.  Thanks!

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

  • How do I share my iTunes library with my mother, but not on our home network?

How do I share my Itunes library with my mother, but not on our home network?

Another alternative is she can select tracks from your library copy and just add them to her library. Then she does not have to bother with switching between two libraries.
