Put screen to sleep not computer

Hi
I am a Mac user and when i want to put the Macbook display to sleep I just go to a hot corner and it turns the screen off. The computer does not sleep but this saves power as the screen is the main power draw when at idle. I assume Windows has something
like this as it is a great option. Forgive me but I cannot find a setting to do this and google was no help.
Thanks for your help.

In Windows about all you can do is to make a shortcut with the following target to invoke a screen saver:
C:\Windows\System32\scrnsave.scr /s
This won't power down the monitor, however.  The only way I've seen to make that happen is to wait out the time that's defined in the Power Plan Settings.

  • Keys CTRL-SHIFT-EJECT puts screen to sleep, WI-FI too on ML!

Hello, i used to use CTRL-SHIFT-EJECT on my MBP mid 2009 with Lion to put my screen to sleep while downloading stuff or performing other things. After i upgraded to ML, with the same combination of keys, my wi-fi turns off too and as soon as i hit any key to turn the screen on, i can see my wi-fi icon connecting and after about 2-3 seconds i get back online. Is that a bug or supposed to be so?

What command or key combo are you using to put it to sleep?
Option-Command-Eject works for me. You have to hold the combo for about 1/2 second or more since the delay was put into the Eject key some time ago.

  • T42p vista fn + f3 and fn + f4 functions (turn off screen and sleep) not working correctly

Hi -- I recently installed windows vista on my T42p.  It works fine except that the fn+f3 and fn+f4 functions do not work as expected.  Before installing the hotkeys driver, the fn+f4 function worked correctly while f3 did not (going to sleep worked, turning the monitor off did not).  I then installed the recommended hotkeys driver.  Now fn+f4 makes the monitor turn off while f3 does nothing ... fn+f4 is supposed to put the laptop to sleep.  On top of this, if i select "sleep" from the start menu, the computer turns the monitor off instead of going to sleep.
Presumably, the sleep button could still be telling the computer to go to sleep, but the actual operation of going to sleep is now broken?  Just a guess.  Anyways -- anyone know how to resolve this so that fn+f3 turns my monitor off and fn+f4 puts my computer to sleep?

I've too this problem, but more, my sound mute wasn't worked (for deblock, but it can block it few second before...) 5 days in 5-6 instalation of three version of winxp: winxp ru x64 sp2, winxp es/ru sp3 x32.
eventually I've found and ran "TPOSDSVC.exe" in instalation directory and it give an opportunity  deblocking the sound volume!!!!!!!!!!!! and I don't need more functions
volume levels and brightness adjustment worked well without OSD (before I ran TPOSDSVC.exe) and with OSD.
and now I don't know worked this bustered sound driver in winxp x64.

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep?!!!

I would like to play a movie on my iMac but to watch it on my LCD TV. How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep. PLS have in mind that ctrl+shift+ eject does not work, it makes my iMac screen go  black as well as the  tv screen. So far, i have red many articles concerning this subject, but no one seems to have the right answer. I simply can´t believe that apple did not think of it, as it is nothing new ....
    Thanks

My brother has eight cats, so your not along. Fortunetly his go outside.
I have been talking to the people over at macforums and they had some good thoughts. One guy suggested going analog and soldering in a rocker switch on the cable connecting a hub to the computer, turn off switch turns off keyboard and mouse.
I was prepared to try that but a great idea came along. Arch, you might be interested in this too. Buy a cheap (found one locally for $20) usb kvm switch that takes one usb keyboard and mouse and connects it to two pcs/macs and only connect one of the outs to my system. There is a button to switch between the two, so when I want to disable the keyboard and mouse, I just switch it to pc2, which is not connected to anything.
Cheap and easy solution. I wish I could of figured out how to do this with software, since there would be no money if it was freeware, but I guess you cant win them all.
    Thanks everyone for chiming in!

My Ipad dropped dead. I had 89% charge left. Came back an hour later after putting it to sleep and it is totally black...no response to plugging it in...usually there is a sound...when I plugged into my apple computer it doesnot even show up on itunes..no acknowlegement of it...no nothing...Ipad 3..new this last spring...I had an ipad 2 before this...so this is not my first rodeo as they say.Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Or is it just dead?

    Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

  • Computer does not put itself to sleep when used in lid-closed mode

Hi. I'm having a small problem when using my macbook pro with the LED display, lid closed and with external keyboard and mouse. If I leave the computer unattended, the display goes to sleep at the time specified in system settings under energy saver. The computer, however, does not go to sleep - the white power indicator remains solid and noises for new email etc can still be heard.
I should probably just try to remember to put it to sleep manually but I keep forgetting. Does anybody know what settings I need to adjust?

I tried cycling the old battery many times, and the computer would still shut down unexpectedly instead of going to sleep when it ran out of power. I got a free replacement from the supplier [http://myworld.ebay.com/cbkusaelectronics>, but I have cycled this new battery twice now, and it still does not go to sleep when it runs out of power. The capacity of the battery is fine (4.9 Ah), and the timing calibration seems fine as well. I have two older batteries from NewerTech and they allow sleep every time, so I think my computer is fine. Can anyone enlighten me about the cause of this problem? Does my battery lack some 'sleep battery' cell in it for use after the other 4 cells discharge? Or does my battery lack a chip that communicates with the computer? Is there any hope of getting this battery to support sleep when discharged?
Has anyone else seen this problem consistently in a brand of battery? Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper battery that does not exhibit this problem? I have been happy with NewerTech, but they cost over $130.
(I only paid $44 plus $10 shipping, so I probably got what I paid for. It is maybe still worth it to have a high capacity battery for such a low cost, but I can't rely upon it in those last few minutes or I may lose work.)

  • Startup gets past Dell logo to Windows logo, but not further unless I put it to sleep mode and then wake up

Hi guys, new to the forum and very much hoping to get help to the following problem:
I'm experiencing a very unusual problem that I've never encountered before nor read about anywhere on the internet. After installing a clean install of Windows 8 on my Dell Inspirion N5050, startup does get past the Dell logo and onto the Windows loading logo.
However, it won't go further than this. The logo goes away, leaving the screen blank (NOT black) and it won't continue to the logon page or start menu. All lights are burning (meaning it's working somewhere underneath that weird blank screen). And the funny
thing is that when I press the power button (or close the lid) to put it to sleep and then wake it up by pressing again, the logon/start menu is there and Windows is working perfectly.
In short: everything works perfectly, except that I have to put the computer to sleep and wake it back up in order for me to see/get into windows.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? I'm so utterly confused here!
    Thanks so much in advance!
    Rose

    Hi,
This issue can be caused by failing to load files or drivers.
First, I suggest you to try to boot into Safe mode, and shut down and power on to see if there is the same issue:
Please use these steps to boot into Safe mode:
Windows key + Run -> Type msconfig, and press Enter -> Under Boot tab, check on “Safe boot” -> Click Ok to restart computer.
To disable boot into safe mode automatically, repeat above steps  and uncheck the Safe boot option.
If the issue not persists, please try to disable fast startup to make sure all the drivers were load properly and check the results:

Ipod touch 4th gen needed a new screen and sleep/wake switch.  So, I replace them.  I was able to get to settings and do "erase all content and settings".  I am not able to totally shut this device off as it keeps restarting after a few seconds.  I have used itunes to restore and also recover.  Device will actually shut off and stay shut off if I leave it connected to the computer.  The moment I unplug (3 seconds) the apple logo appears, it boots, unlock screen appears, I can unlock and operate normally, unplugged or not.  Just cant get it to completely shut down unplugged.  Any thoughts?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
      - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem. Maybe you installed a bad component or damaged something during the repair/replacement.
Apple will not help since you worked on the iPod yourself.

  • My computer shuts down when I put it to sleep

Ever since I used some of those auto-download upgrades my Mac shuts down when I put it to sleep. What's wrong?

Hi gazebo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Computer now wakes up immediately after I put it to sleep!!

I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and everything is ok except for one thing: when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again!! Why can't it stay asleep?!?

Sleep is one of the activities controlled by the PMU. A reset of the PMU may
    be in order:

what settings will be cleared by this (what will I lose and need to set up again)? any system Settings, firmware updates, or whatever?
Also, I trust that you have reviewed your Energy saving preferences to confirm
that they are set to allow sleep, and not to disturb said sleep?
which ones in particular? I think they're fine but maybe I'm missing something that got munged somehow. Where are the "disturb"-type settings? I've got "wake on LAN access" clicked off for example. What else is there?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I put the computer in my bag and when I open it again the machine is so hot I can almost not touch it.
I am affraid that the hardware is allready fried.
Also when I press a key to restart after it has been idle for a few minutes it often takes up to a minute to wake back up.
    This machine is bran new..
    What should I do?

    Try a SMC reset:
