Putting 2 drives in my MBP 2010

Hey all,
I am looking to put 2 internal hard drives into my mid/late 2010 MacBook Pro.
I want 1 SSD drive for running all my programs and 1 HD for storage.
I've never done anything like this, so I was looking for recommendations on drives as well as the proper steps to get this all set up and running smoothly.
For the 1st SSD drive, I am thinking about purchasing this one:
1. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_2JaCtb1BA2V7J
For the second drive I am thinking about purchasing this one:
2. http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J22423/dp/B00B4QESVQ/re f=psdc11_t2_B0097LG9U8_B00B4QESVQ
From watching some videos, it appears that I will also need some sort of drive enclosure for the SSD. Will this suffice?:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/DDAMBS0GB/
Lastly,
When transferring all my programs, music, and storage from my old hard drive, what steps do I need to take to put all the programs on one drive and the rest of the stuff on the second drive? Or do I just throw it all onto one drive and then move it over later to the second drive once everything is all set up?
Also, do I need to put an operating system on the second storage drive or just the SSD?
For this data transfer, will Carbon Copy Cloner work alright?
Thanks for the help!

  • Putting a solid state drive in my MBP

I have a MPB which is about two years old. After my bro made me super jealous by getting a 17 " solid state drive brand-nu MBP (with a matte screen! - he's a photographer) I'm wanting to upgrade, too. His is real bad-***. But I just don't have the dough for a brand-new set up
Is it possible to add one of those solid state drive bad boys to a two year old machine?
beside the cost of the drive, will Apple just put it in for me, and how much does that cost?
    Thanks
    JC

Yes, you can put one in your computer. No, Apple will not do it for you. You can do it yourself. Visit OWC both for drives and tutorials.

  • MBP 2010 running Yosemite suspected hard drive problems

Hi, Got MBP 2010 running Yosemite. Yesterday MBP would not start. When you press the power button it starts up but within a matter of seconds you hear a click / clunk sound and just shuts down. Any ideas? Hard drive failure? any help appreciated. Thanks

Thank you both for your responses. I will keep you updated with feedbacvk from apple genius bar (when i get an appointment as always booked up !!!)
Curious now as what sensor this code is in reference to.

  • Do I have to change my hard drive cable all the time on my MBP 2010

My MBP 2010 not reading my new HD, This is because of a faulty HD ribbon cable, my ? is will I have to always change this cable all the time, I have read read other post on this issue.

No it was not damaged that i know it was working fine until I had the HD failure. I first bought a WD HD Scorpio and that HD was damaged then i went to Bestbuy and bought a Seagate momentus 350gb Hd, it works fine externally, but when I get it connected internally my MBP does not read it.From reading these post I see that the cable tends to go bad, I am just hoping that I only have replace it one time I use MBP for college.

  • Am I the only one having hard drive problems? replaced 2010

I am sooo frustrated I really want to put my laptop on the pavement and run it over a couple of times.  Lately I have been hearing the tell-tale signs of a bad hard drive.  The little scratching noise from the lower left side of the computer - next to the track pad.
Off to Apple I went and unsuprisingly I was told AGAIN how it is a piece of electronics and they are always subject to going bad.. blah.. blah.. blah.
Problem is, I heard this same song and dance in Nov. 2010 when they replaced it the first time.  Of course, my 90 day (go apple) warranty is long gone.  How likely is it that I would end up with the 'same' problem twice (sales guy told me 2% of people have a hard drive go bad)?
I am not 'taking' the computer anywhere - living room / bedroom.  No kids / no pets / no liquid or food on it.  Never overheats / only use a couple of hours a day.  In 20 years of owning computers (always lower end compared to this) I have NEVER had to replace a hard drive, much less two within 30 MONTHS!
So, when I replace this hard drive it ultimately means that I am having to install a new hard drive every 10 months!  Really?  I thought the $2,800 I spent was for something better than this.
Details:  Bought MacBook Pro in Dec. 2008
Replaced hard drive in Nov. 2010
Now have ANOTHER bad hard drive to replace in Aug. 2011
What can I do?  The initial cost of $2,800 will now bring the 'ownership' up to $3,300!!!!  Do I keep dumping money into it or scrap it and cut my losses?

Before you run it over with the car, please contact me. I'll be happy to take it off your hands and save you the trouble.
You can talk to the Apple people and see if they're willing to help out.
If not, buy a HD with a much longer warranty; most are three years, and some, like the WD Black series, have five year warranties. I don't think it's realistic to believe you're going to have to keep replacing HDs every 10 months.
Even if you still want to "cut your lossses," installing a HD for less than $75 to create a working MBP and selling said MBP is going to make far more sense than running it over, giving it away, or putting it on the shelf, and will net you some cash.

  • MBP 2010 had Mobo replaced - Now keyboard lights not working?!?!

    Hi,
I have just picked my MBP 2010 back up from the apple store, after it having its main logic board replaced. After having it back home for a few hours, I have only just noticed that the keyboard back lights are no longer functioning. By turning the brightness up with the f6 key, it brings up the HUD which shows the brightness bar going up, but the lights are still off.
I have tried to go into the settings and turn off the option that says automatically illuminate keyboard in low light to see if that fixed the issue, but no success. I have also installed lab tick, but this still did not get the backlight functioning.
The last thing I tried was a SMC reset. I performed this twice but to no avail.
I have tried to search the forums for alternative reasons as to why they would not be working, but cant find anything.
Can anyone advise me as to what my next step should be? I would like to try to fix this myself rather than take it back to the apple store, as it is about an hours drive away (last resort). I have read that there is a cable that connects the keyboard backlight, and this could become loose during maintenance. Is this easy to find / check ?
    Thanks

Just incase people have the same issue down the line, I managed to fix this problem myself within 5 minutes.
I found a guide on ifixit.com for my model of macbook and then looked at the logic board replacement section (as this is what repair it had been to apple for).
I found the section regarding the power ribbon for the keyboard lights, and after taking my mac apart, I realised that they had not connected the ribbon, and it was still left unattached under one of the fans.
Carefully connecting this back and then putting the fan back solved the problem. So a simple 5 minute job has saved me a long trip back to see apple.
Thanks for your help anyway guys!

  • MBP 2010 graphic problem not registered by Apple

So, this is an ooooooold problem that already has many threads in this board.
    Summary:
Graphic glitches randomly happening on several applications such as browsers, iTunes, XCode,...
It happens on an specific model (MBP 2010 with nVidia graphics).
It supposedly only affects OS X Lion, not on Snow Leopard.
I've known on cases on others computers such as iMacs or MacMini so it may be related to an specific nVidia graphic card.
The thing is that, not only it has not been fixed by any software update, but it's not registered by Apple as I have called support and they don't think it's a generic problem. Solutions vary from, resetting SMC and PRAM and reinstalling Lion from scratch, but none of them work. Some people were able to have their mpb logic boards replaced but they never came back to tell if it fixed the problem or not.
Some threads of this same issue are:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17369687#17369687
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3291270?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3304494?start=30&tstart=2
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3379398?start=0&tstart=0
But there are far more of these just in this boards.
I have lived with this problem all this time but it's frustrating when you are doing a demonstration to a customer, it happens and only when you explain that you've explained that you've been living with it for so long with a such expensive laptop you know how stupid you've been.
It's sad that Apple is unaware of this and they just give you useless solutions. You feel as if you were trying to scam them or something, and the only choice is to send them your laptop (if you are lucky enough to have it under warranty), be without your computer for a while and cross your fingers that they are able to reproduce the problem or they are able to fix it (because they could replace the logic board and still have the problem).
I'd like to see Apple trying to find a fix for this, if it's a software problem then perfect. If it's hardware related then at least you know it's going to get fixed by sending it to technical support...
Sorry for the wall of text and any grammar mistake you may find as I'm not native english.

Well, the description "computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display" does not match with the exactly same problem (as shown in the screenshots) that users report.
I have plenty of these screenshots myself:
Taking the macbook to the service is the obvious next step but since it's hard to reproduce you take the risk of have your macbook returned with the same problem. It's a problem for me to stay away of my laptop 1-2 weeks and I'd like to know that it's going to be fixed for sure.
It's also not happening in Snow Leopard, which leads to think it's a driver's related problem more...

I have ordered a 800 firewire to 800 firewire cable and am hoping to use the target mode option to copy files from the MBP.
    Is this possible?
    Hope so!
Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Neil

    Thanks Ogelthorpe.
Just bought an enclosure to try that also.
Hoping the MBP isn't really dead but just feigning death
    Fingers crossed.

I have an external hard drive that I was using on a windows based system. I backed up the contents to dvd's and now I want to format the drive for my MBP? Can someone please tell me the best way to do this?
    Thanks.

All you need to do is…
    1) Connect the drive
    2) Launch Disk Utility
    3) Select the drive and go to the partition tab
    4) Click on Options… and chenge it from MBR to GUID Partition Table
    5) Create a partition using MacOS Journalled
    6) Apply the change and you should have a Mac drive

  • Hard Drive Replacement for MBP 17"

Saw discussion on 15" MBP Hard Drive Replacement. I have 17" MBP which I purchased as it first came out almost 3 years ago and it has a 100GB hard drive. This has never been of adequate size. What sort of drive can I use in my MBP to get maximum storage? And, what about my Apple Care policy if I install the hard drive myself? I think the Apple Care policy was for 3 years? I purchased the MBP about May 2006.
Where do I purchase the drive for this MBP - and which HD make might be best - or good?

If you bought your MBP in May of 2006, your warranty will be ending in a month or two, so you can just wait until it has ended. An AASP can replace the drive for you sooner if you don't want to wait, and your warranty will remain intact except for the drive itself, which will now be covered by the manufacturer's warranty instead, usually 3 or 5 years.
You don't necessarily void your warranty if you do the work yourself, but you do run the risk that some other problem would be blamed on the unauthorized repair and consequently not be covered. There has been a great deal of discussion on this topic.
One thing to check when buying your drive--check to see if it has its own version of the sudden motion sensor. Preferably, get one without, since the MBP has its own sudden motion sensor built in. (This can be disabled if you happen to get a drive that has one.)
    Good luck!

  • DVD/Lightscribe drive for new (late 2010 Mac Pro?

Does anyone know a source for an internal DVD w/ Lightscribe drive for a late 2010 Mac Pro? I want to install it in the second drive bay. I got one from OWC, but the depth of the DVD drawer was about twice that of the original drive that came with the Mac Pro. It would have been able to fit through the drop cover on the front of the Pro, but would not clear the internal rack components. It fit in the rack nicely with the 4 screws lining up properly, but would then not open more than about an eighth of an inch before hitting the internal rack frame, causing it to close. Thanks.

Bummer! The instructions included with the drive did not mention thi. When I called OWC customer service she said that sometimes you had to remove the bezel from the Mac. I told her the Pro had no bezel. She said that the drive info did not specifically say it would fit a 2010 Pro a d gave me a RMA.'nmh bad for not questioning further. Thanks.

  • My MBP 2010 suddenly can't find my wifi anymore

Since last monday my MBP 2010 suddenly couldn't find my wifi-network anymore. My older MB (2007) has no problems at all. Tried rebooting modem, rebooting MBP. problem seemed to be solved, but next day, the trouble started all over again. Any suggestions? Modem is Speedtouch.
    Thanks

First make sure your Mac's Airport is turned on to do this click the WiFi symbol in your menubar. In the menu that appears the first line should say " Airport: On" if it says off click "Turn Airport on" which will be directly below.
Alternatively try removing your WiFi network from your Macs list of known networks. I'll show you how to do that below:
In System Preferences select "Network". In the pane on the left hand side make sure Airport is selected. On the right select "advanced". In the window that appears click the name of your WiFi network. Below that click the "-" and your network will be "forgotten". Reboot. Your wifi network should now be visible to your Mac. Just be sure you know your WiFi password.

  • MBP 2010. Logic board ?

I just dropped off my MBP 2010. They said it was a logic board.
Symptoms : Fan running high. Beach ball , jerky cursor, very slow response time
I zapped the PRAM about a month ago. When some of the symptoms started. It worked for a while ...
Could the new OS download have anything to do with this? I have been using Apples since 1996 and hope Apple will rectify this issue if there is a fault in the manufacturing side or software .
No Appplecare cost 280 flat fee...

You got an excellent price - I try to let as many people that I can know of Apple's flat-rate repair policy. They could have been unscrupulous and charge you nearly $800.
I doubt that any software download could have caused logic board failure - I've never heard of it occurring. Faulty logic boards just turn up from time to time. Sometimes the symptoms can go unnoticed for years, sometimes they just fail at any given moment. Thank goodness, it's not  pandemic around the Mac community.
Once you get your logic board replaced, I think that you'll be pleased. And you did get a great deal on it.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
