Putting 23-inch display to sleep by pressing button on side

When I use to press the bottom button on the side of the display it would put my screen to sleep. Now when I press it, it prompts me to shut the computer down. How can I set it up so that it puts the display to sleep when pressed?
Thanks!

You can't just put the monitor to sleep with the side button, it puts both the computer and display to sleep. You can have the button set to turn the display on or off, leaving the computer unaffected. almost like sleep as only takes 1-2 seconds for screen image to appear once the button is pressed to turn monitor on.
To change preferences go to System Preferences under the  and click on Displays. Then click on Options to set the preferences you want.

How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation? I do not want to go to the projector just to turn it off and turn on again after a while? Is there a keyboard shortcut for that?

I want to be able to sleep the external display and at the same time do things in the MacBook.( This feature is useful for me so that I can prepare some things and so that my audience will not see what I am about to show them.)
Is there a feature for Mountain Lion?

  • How to put MacBook Pro display to sleep while watching DVD on 2nd Display

Not sure if this is answered elsewhere, but I have a MacBook Pro with a second larger display attached thru DVI. As I watch DVDs on the external display, I would like to darken out the MacBook Pro screen so it is not distracting while watching the movie. I seemingly can't put only the MacBook display to sleep - both displays goto sleep. I can't close the MacBook either. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Hold the '"Darker" key down until the screen is ghostly.

  • Put one out of 2 displays to sleep?

I have 2 displays, my main computer display 23 inch Cinema Display.
    And 40 inch samsung LCD-Tv.
I would like to be able to put my main display to sleep when I watch a movie on the LCD-TV.
If I power off my LCD-TV it disappears and only computer display is active.
If I power the LCD up both displays work.
How can I power down the computer display without unplugging the cable?
Or atleast make the screen go dark, like sleep mode?

Interesting. Just for my knowledge, did you check In the display control panel there is a tab for options. See if you can check for having the side button turn the monitor on/off. Because of the DVI-ADC converter it may be possible that you do not have this option.

  • Putting iMac display to sleep, when using TV as a screen.

I have just connected my iMac to my 42" Panasonic 1080p TV, the connection was easy and is working fine. My questions relates to putting the iMac display to sleep when using the TV as a monitor, if I am watching You Tube, Sky Player or a DVD, I intend to use my TV as the monitor. Is it possible for the iMac to puts its display to sleep, whilst leaving the TV on. I played around with this today, however was unable to manage this.
    Regards Craig

    Hi Craig
There is no way to independently sleep either the iMac's Display or an attached Display/TV. However if in the Display Arrangement Preferences you set the attached Display or TV to be the Main Display and turn Mirroring Off, then FrontRow and the Full Screen Mode app's like, DVD player, QuickTimePlayer, etc. will black out the unused iMac display.

  • Putting 1 of 2 displays to sleep?

I just started using my 46" HD TV as a second display for playing iTunes movies, etc. I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable and I have 2 questions:
    1. When running in dual screen mode, is there a way to stop video output to the TV besides unplugging the cable? The video output is constant when I'm cycling through the TV inputs, isn't this wasting energy? I only want to use it every once in a while.
    2. When running in dual screen mode, is there a way to put the primary display to sleep or must it stay on while I'm running the second display?

This feature must have been included with an update because I can now turn off 1 display without it affecting the second display.

  • Displays not sleeping at the login screen

Since I upgraded(clean installation) from 10.4 server to 10.5 server none of the client station displays will sleep at the login screen. I have 3 labs with Intel iMacs running 10.4 and 10.5. I have Workgroup manager set to always manage the Desktop in Energy Saver and put only the displays to sleep after an hour. This used to work with 10.4 server even at the login screen. Is there a way I can get them to sleep at the login screen?
    George

Well I am still trying to figure out the issue however I have made some ground. It seems that my 10.5 Intel iMacs screens appear to sleep if set it to less than an hour like 45 minutes or 15 minutes but my 10.4 PPC macs worked the first day at 15 minutes but currently are not sleeping. I will keep trying...

Several minutes after it puts display to sleep, network get disconnected.
I am sure that it get disconnected because I check the router traffic from another MAC and it get disconnected.
No mother if its connected by cable or wifi, it get disconnected.
In Energy Saver properties "Computer sleep" is set to "Never" and "Display sleep" is set in "10 minutes".
"Wake for network access" is checked but it will never work if network get disconnected.
"Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep" is checked
All the other options are NOT checked.
I hope someone from this community can help me with this issue.

  • Putting the Displays to Sleep with Game Server Running

I have a game server, ok?
I have the console box on my desktop, which runs the sever (COD2) and keeps it active.
I try to put my displays to sleep ( hot corner bottom left ), but it always turns back on again. I don't want to put my computer to sleep because I have an active webserver and if I enable sleep mode, the webserver will stop listening.
Is there a way to keep my displays shut off with my computer still active, but still have the Game Server running fro my desktop console box running the server?

Something is waking the display up then--it might even be that server connection.
Do the brightness keys lower the display brightness to an "off" state? I know they do on the Mac notebooks.
I know that wouldn't be the best solution, but that would get the result you're looking for.

  • How to put the display to sleep in Mac OS Lion using keychain?

I use to be able to turn off my displays by hitting "lock screen" in keychain access in Snow Leopard. Now, when I hit it in Lion, it goes to screen saver. It was great being able to turn off the display at night, before going to bed.
Anyone know a work around WITHOUT going to System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver -> Screen Saver -> Hot Corners... -> Pick a corner -> Select "Put Display to Sleep"? I do not want to use hot corners.
I want to lock computer using keychain and the displays go to sleep.
Hopely someone knows of some plist that can be written to-to put the display to sleep.

Really? Want to show me that button or setting that allows that? AFAIK, System Preferences->Security->General->is where you set that when the machine sleeps or screensaver activates. Accordingly, I'm only aware of a hot corner triggering those two options and the behavior remains the same in Lion, even though the prefPane's name is slightly changed.

  • HT6150 Single press of Power Button does not put my MacBook Pro to sleep after this update! Do I need to change anything in the settings? Any help please? Thank you!

The title says it all! After installing the new Mavericks update, I cannot put my MacBook Pro to sleep after a single press of the Power Button like before. Does it have something to do with this update or my MacBook Pro? Or do I have to change something in Settings?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Send your opinion to Apple.
But remember that there are others.
A moment is a medieval unit of time equal to 1.5 minutes or 1/40 of an hour. This reckoning is derived from the work of Bartholomeus Anglicus, writing in 1240 that each hour was divided into four points, each point into ten moments, each moment into twelve ounces, and each ounce into 47 atoms.
In modern English it usually refers to "a short period of time",[2] the exact length remaining ambiguous.

  • Why does the put display to sleep setting put the hard drive to sleep

In the energy options (preferences) for power adapter, I have set the display to sleep after 1 minute but the hard drive is set to never. I do this when I am downloading but don't need to use the macbook. However, the macbook seems to go to sleep anyway - any idea why? Any new settings?
I've maintained these settings on my Power Book G4 and it puts the display to sleep but keeps the Power Book on while downloading.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) doesn't wake the thunderbolt display after sleep

for some reason the display when connected to clamshell macbook pro 17" doesn't wake up when i go to wake up the display from sleep mode.
    what is going on?

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • Problem Awakening Display From Sleep

I just bought my first Apple last saturday,an iMac 17".Here`s my problem, I set up the display to sleep after 5 minutes.Right after it goes to sleep, if I move the mouse the display will turn on again OK,however, once again the displays goes to sleep, if I leave it alone for a long period of time (say a couple of hours) if I move the mouse to awake the display, the display remains dark blue.I can see the cursor, but nothing else.I`ve tried pressing keys, clicking the mouse, anything to awaken the computer,to no avail.
I`ve also made sure that in preferences, the computer is "never put to sleep".I did though, checked the box that says "put the hard disk to sleep when possible",thinking that one thing did not affect the other.
    Or is it?
Ultimately, I had to resort to shutting down the computer (pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and the starting it up again.
My operating system is up to date,so this is not the cause of this bug.
Does anyone have the same problem?
