Putting a AMD R9 270 in a Dell XPS 7100 from 2010

Currently have a Dell XPS 7100 (2010) with a HD 5870. I would like to remove the HD 5870 and add a AMD R9 270. I believe I am OK as far as space, power, bottlenecking, and PCI slot. However, I read a thread in a forum that the Dell XPS 7100 motherboard BIOS will not recognize the R9 270 graphics card. Has anyone performed a similar GPU change on a Dell XPS 7100 or heard of such a BIOS issue?

Did the installation and it seems to be working alright.

  • Dell XPS Laptop Touch Screen Inputs Interpreted as Panning Photoshop CS6

    I have been working with Adobe Illustrator for a little while now and decided that I would like to try Photoshop for digital art.  I downloaded the 30 day trial version of Adobe Illustrator CS 6 about three days ago and noticed immediately that touching my laptop’s touch screen will only allow me to pan using the Hand Tool in Photoshop. I have never had this problem in Adobe Illustrator, as using the touch screen acts just as if I were clicking the left mouse button and dragging the cursor around the screen. I have a Dell XPS 15 - L502X laptop with an integrated touch screen (the entire 15” screen is Multi-touch sensitive).  It is running N-Trig DuoSense Digitizer with the latest drivers.  Is there some simple setting change that can be done within Photoshop CS6 to make it recognize a touch screen input as a normal left click and thus allow me to draw on it using the pen, pencil, or paintbrush tool?  I find it quite odd that I have no problems with this in Illustrator CS6.  Could it be that this tablet-like touch screen input is restricted on the trial version?  I am interested in buying Photoshop so I can use it whenever I’d like for longer than the 30 day trial allows, but I certainly don’t want to buy it if I cannot use my stylus on the touch screen to draw.  Any help is much appreciated!
    Here is a link to a youtube video that I put up showing the problem.  The first program shown in the video is Adobe Illustrator CS6 using the Paintbrush tool.  The second program shown is Adobe Photosop CS6 using the pencil tool.  I draw the line in Ps using the mouse pad and then attempt to draw (still using the pencil tool) on the touch screen yielding only scrolling with the hand tool.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd1NOBway4o

    I have this exact same problem, though I have a touchscreen monitor for my PC rather than a laptop. This is a bit awkward, but until I find a real solution, this works just fine: when you want to use the touch screen for CS6, hold down the mouse button. You may have to use the mouse to tap the tools you want, but at least there's a temporary solution.

    From my personal experience, I wouldn't go for an Integrated card. This is one of the most important components for Photoshop, so invest in a decent graphics card (ATI or NVidia). It doesn't have to be a really exepensive one - I have been using ATI Radeon with 256MB of RAM on my Dell Studio for almost two years and it still rocks! (even when I work with 3D in Ps CS5 Extended).
    I would also invest in more RAM (this can be added easily - I bought extra 4GB as my Studio came with 3GB).
    I wouldn't worry about the processor - I'm on Intel Core 2 Duo - and it works very very well, it's very quick which is very important as I'm training Photoshop.
    I hope this helps.

  • I need drivers for my Audigy 2 in a Dell XPS

    I have a Dell XPS. I just installed Windows XP Pro SP3 in the computer and I dont have the drivers for the Factory installed Audigy 2 ZS - Dell (OEM) <span class="text">SB0358 sound card. The drivers didn't load when I installed the OS. Dell does not have the drivers just a web patch avalible, and Creative does not have them ether. I tried a few Audigy drivers but all have the same error message that the sound device supported is not found. Does anyone know how I can get them or which driver will work with this card?

    Daniel K.'s Audigy support pack 3.6 will recognize your DELL card and you get see the info here:
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/SB-Audigy-Series-Support-Pack-3-6--09-2009/td-p/540934
    I have used Dan's packs on OEM Dell cards before. He usually puts the hardware ID in his inf file.

  • DELL XPS 6000 with Audigy2ZS..No so

    <font face="Baskerville Old Face" size="5">?I have a Dell XPS 6000 Dimension desktop. Win XP. The sound card is a (Soundblaster 2ZS.) When I turn/off?my center speakers, I hear the sound go on, but unable to play any music. I uninstalled the?Soundblaster media Cneter beacuse I did get some sounds that had terrible echo and I couldn't turn it off,so I uninstalled it..didn't think I needed it to play audio with other programs I have. I went to Bios to see if the integrated Audio was on,and it was. ((I've had computers in the past where I had to go to Bios,disable the onboard Audio,so I could hear the Soundblaster.))?In Bios, I?disabled the integrated Audio>rebooted> then no Windows startup music. I've checked all connections and any onboard programs that could be muted or turned down, but?now?there is no sound. I went back to BIOS and re-enabled the Realtek 97 onboard Audio. I went to ADD/REMOVE programs and clicked on the Audigy Soundblaster, I did a repair and it loaded up to 99%,then asked me to put in Disk for the ini.setup files? Did they mean the DELL XPS 600 resource CD with the drivers/utilities/diagnostics? or the Dell Operating System CD? Is this a dangerous thing to do that could impact this computer? I would hate to mess anything up because it's out of warranty. Could there be a conflict with the onboard Realtek 97 and the Soundblaster soundcard, or should they work together? Thank you to all who reply.

    Any ideas, anyone?

    Your help would be greatly appreciated as though I have used Ubuntu and Fedora for years everything worked out of the box so this is new to me. He he breakage I love Arch , learning so much.

  • Questions about my MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 and my Dell Studio 7100

    Ok, I have had this card installed for about a year now. From the beginning Catalyst Control Center had given me error messages, "Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working. Windows is checking for solutions" every time I start the machine or every time I try to use the Catalyst Control Center. This has not been a problem because I have been using a 2 monitor system using the DVI port from on and the HDMI to Display Port adapter to the second larger monitor (if I went straight HDMI I can't change the settings and I end up with a 1 inch black border around the desktop and the outer edge of the 23" monitor,) so I just worked around with the HDMI to DVI. Well now I am trying to hook up three monitors. One to the Display port through a Displayport to DVI, one to the HDMI through the HDMI to DVI and one to the Display port. No matter what I try to do through the Windows display control panel, I can not get the displayport monitor (which ever is hook to that port) to display. Windows 7 does detect all three monitors, but it will not allow me to "extend the desktop" to the third monitor and I still can't get the Catalyst Control Center to work.
    I have uninstalled all files from ATI or AMD that involve the video and reinstalled the latest drivers and software, but the Catalyst Control center still is not running.
    If you could help me with this it would be great. I am a graphics designer and web designer/developer and not a hardware or software tech and I have been googling and trying different possible answers since yesterday morning.
    My graphics card is
    MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770
    My computer is
    Dell Studio XPS 7100, AMD Athlon IIX4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz
    8 gb
    64-bit operating system
    I am attempting to hook up a LG W2361 to the HDMI through HDMI to DVI adapter (presently working) at 1920 x 1080
    an LG W1952 (at 1440 x 900) through the DVI port to DVI (presently working) and
    an old Samsung SyncMaster 170t  to the Displayport through a the adapter (not working) monitor is detected but it will not allow the extend desktop to be applied.
    Hope someone can help, thanks in advance for just reading all of this.

    Just incase anyone runs into a similar problem. I figured it out.
    Somehow in one of either the ATI driver updates or in a Microsoft update, my drivers and software was contaminated. I deleted all software and drivers for the card, which I had already tried several times. But this time I went into safe mode used CCcleaner in safe mode and cleared the register of all entries. I then reloaded and the Catalyst Control center and it works fine now.
    The problem with the three monitors seems to be that the one hooked to the displayport, if you are using more than 2 monitors, must be hooked to an active displayport adapter. I was using a passive adapter. So either I need to buy a very expensive adapter or.....maybe a new monitor that uses displayport.
    Hopefully this will help someone else having this issue.

    The X server is started by KDM. And don't know if there is some sort of way that I should configure KDE to start X with the bumblebee configuration.
    Anyway, does somebody came across this kind of issue? How can I make my external and laptop screen work properly ?

    I solved it by brute force:
    pacman -Rdd libgl
    (delete conflicting package without checking dependencies)
    pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
    And now I can watch high-quality video on a  big external TV through HDMI (driven by Nvidia card), while also independently using internal monitor.

  • [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 l502x + GT 540M + Bumblebee: No devices detected

    Hello everyone,
    I have Dell XPS 15 l502x laptop with GT 540M graphics card with optimus support. I want to enable optimus with bumblebee, but no matter what I do I just can't make it work. I'm already start thinking that this laptop is not supported....
    I've installed the following packages from AUR to support optimus on my laptop:
    bumblebee
    nvidia-bumblebee
    nvidia-utils-bumblebee
    Also, I am using my own custom configured kernel, uname -a shows:
    Linux milktea 3.2.13-1-abs #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 28 14:16:29 CST 2012 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2760QM CPU @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
    The only changes from ArchLinux default kernel is CPU architecture (I changed to Core 2 Duo and later instead of default i686) and support for PAE.
    When I run optirun glxgears I get this output:
    [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) Failed to load module "mouse" (module does not exist, 0)
    [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.
    And Xorg.8.log is:
    [ 4430.976]

    I have bumblebee, dkms-bbswitch, nvidia-utils-bumblebee, nvidia, virtualgl
    My bumblebee.conf is:
    # Configuration file for Bumblebee. Values should **not** be put between quotes
    ## Server options. Any change made in this section will need a server restart
    # to take effect.
    [bumblebeed]
    # The secondary Xorg server DISPLAY number

    # Should the unused Xorg server be kept running? Set this to true if waiting
    # for X to be ready is too long and don't need power management at all.
    KeepUnusedXServer=false

    ServerGroup=bumblebee
    # Card power state at exit. Set to false if the card shoud be ON when Bumblebee
    # server exits.
    TurnCardOffAtExit=true
    # The default behavior of '-f' option on optirun. If set to "true", '-f' will
    # be ignored.
    NoEcoModeOverride=false
    # The Driver used by Bumblebee server. If this value is not set (or empty),
    # auto-detection is performed. The available drivers are nvidia and nouveau
    # (See also the driver-specific sections below)
    Driver=nvidia

    VGLTransport=proxy
    # Should the program run under optirun even if Bumblebee server or nvidia card
    # is not available?
    AllowFallbackToIGC=false
    # Driver-specific settings are grouped under [driver-NAME]. The sections are
    # parsed if the Driver setting in [bumblebeed] is set to NAME (or if auto-
    # detection resolves to NAME).

    ## Section with nvidia driver specific options, only parsed if Driver=nvidia

    [driver-nouveau]
    KernelDriver=nouveau
    PMMethod=bbswitch
    XorgConfFile=/etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nouveau
    I haven't edited any xorg.conf files whatsoever, so they are just the default ones. Here is /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia:
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"

    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "UseEDID" "false"

    What are the full relevant sections in lspci -vvnn saying? your grepping removed the verbose bits. e.g. when my nvidia card is off, it gives:

    !!! Unknown header type 7f
    but different when it's turned on.

  • Dell XPS M1330 entry in the wiki. Discuss here !

    Hi,
    I created a page for Dell XPS M1330. For now there is just little information, I hope archers who own this amazing laptop would complete it .
    Cheers !

    OK. Removed all partitions, created sda1 for Vista, sda2 for swap, sda3 for root and sda4 for home. I installed Arch first (doesn't really matter) when I installed Vista (but then of course I had to boot my Arch installation with the CD again to reinstall grub, but no problems). Works now.
    BUT. Heads up: Windows Vista installation (don't know if SP1 solves this, this CD doesn't have SP1) hangs after some reboots when it tries to identify the hardware. I can see the USB devices on the computer link, then the display goes black and goes back on again (detecting the graphics card or whatever), and then it just sits there, doing nothing. No HDD activity or nothing. The solution? Change SATA mode in BIOS _from_ AHCI _to_ ATA.
    Just for future reference.
    I have a problem though, I can't access the internet from my Arch. Modprobe:ing the bcm43xx module just says "driver loaded" in dmesg, but I don't get wlan0 or eth1 (eth0 is LAN card) or anything, iwconfig etc says "no devices with wireless extensions". Any ideas?
    Edit: Doh, need fwcutter for the wlan. Downloading it now, putting it on my USB stick. Hopefully it will work

  • MSI R7 260X 2GD5 OCV1 comparability with Dell XPS 435MT

    I have a Dell XPS 435MT with an i7920 processor. I have upgraded the system to a 600 Watt power supply. Will the R7 260X work in this system?  The motherboard has a PCI 16e slot, but is only PCI 2.0. The R7 is PCI Express 3.0. Will there be any comparability problems?  Thanks!

    We can't tell you. PCI- E should be fine. While AMD cards' downwards compatibility is not as good as nvidia cards' it should still work, theoretically. Only Dell can confirm if their machine is compatible with current generation vgas. Besides PCI-E an old bios not supporting current vgas can still spoil any chance of running the card.

  • [Solved] xorg stuck in tty1 with nouveau driver on dell xps laptop

    hi all, struggling with xorg on dell xps with nouveau driver.
    Nouveau works under ubuntu LTS so no hardware problem.
    Followed the arch wiki for installation and all related links (nouveau, xorg etc.)
    startx (and startxfce4): it seems like xserver has started but I'm stuck
    in tty1 still seeing the text output of the command; ctrl-c doesn't work and  I need to log into tty2 to be able to kill the xserver.
    Had to create an Xorg.conf with Xorg :0 -configure (else xserver couldn't start with fatal error screen not found).
    Xorg.log.0 shows no EE errors.
    Tried all the tricks read on the wiki, e.g. downgraded the kernel, deleted ~/.xinitrc, deleted xorg.conf (also tried
    a minimal xorg.conf with only the screen section), blacklisted  modules i915 and intel_agp, checked there's no vga=
    options in my bootloader.  Tried some other tricks found on forum posts to no avail.
    Any suggestions highly appreciated.

    I don't think this possible, if you have two video cards and only want to use the nvidia, you need to have a possibility to disable the intel in your bios.

    I overlooked that issue. It seems under ubuntu both cards are used together and it works automagically without bumblebee. I was hoping to achieve the same on arch,
    given bumblebee's wiki says: "Warning: Bumblebee is still under heavy development! But your help is very welcome."
    All Bumblebee is under heavy development, true, but no reason to not install it, I mean Arch is under heavy development too....
    As for Ubuntu, I don't use it, and have no plans to do so, but tell me, how are they putting it together?
    Just open the Bumblebee wiki, read carefully, and install it.
    Take extra care with nvidia, you then need to reinstall Intel too.
    Basically as advised in the install guide:
    pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit
    pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
    I wanted to know if you installed the Xorg group, but you did it the right way.

  • Should I pick the Macbook Air/Pro or the Dell XPS 13?

    Hello everyone!
    I'm a 10th grade student in a international school, where we are allowed to use laptops instead of our regular notebooks. In my class no one uses a notebook, so I would be the first one.
    My idea came from the fact that I broke my arm, and am unable to write normally for the next 3 months, as my hand is in a cast. I am currently writing on my iPad, which is nice, as I can only use my left hand for typing. I didn't really think much of it, but after few days I realised how easy it is to type on a tablet instead of on a piece of paper.
    I took my exams on a PC and I was easily able to write with my left hand only. The experience was much better, as I was able to erase all my mistakes/ rewrite someting I didn't like… but let's get to the point.
    After I finish my iGCSE's, I'll be going to the IB diploma programme. It is very rigorous and requires a lot of work, so a laptop would be very helpful. The three laptops I want to choose  between are:
    1. 13" Macbook Air
    2. 13" Macbook Pro
    3. New Dell XPS 2015 13" (http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-13-9333/pd?oc=fncwp1512h)
    Now I know about the rumors of the new Macbook Air 12" with retina display, but the idea of having one port only doesn't appeal to me. I currently have an iMac 27" late 2013, along with an iPad and an iPhone. It is better to stick to apple just for the whole sync. between all devices, or is the Dell better in terms of performance? The ultrabook would be used for typing essays, editing videos (I'm doing film at school, so we get assignments like that pretty often) and of course web browsing. Gaming isn't really a priority, but to play some easy-going games such as garry's mod or turbo dismount on the go would be nice.
    So what do you guys this is the best pick? I want the laptop to last another three years before I go to uni, and that's the reason I want to go for either the mid-spec. MacBook Pro/Air or the fully spec. Dell XPS 13. Price plays a role here, as I can only pay max. 1500$ for it, so I cannot afford the fully spec. MacBook Pro 13".
    Ps. I really like the touchscreen in the Dell XPS 13, but does it affect the battery life much? It's really important that it lasts at least 8 hours a day, as I start school really early in the morning, and finish late in the afternoon.
    Thank you for your answer,
    mac117

    Then go for it.
