Putting a hard drive from a G3 into a G4

I have recently bought a Power Mac G4 733 from ebay (very cheap by the way) and I was wondering if I can install the Seagate 18gb internal Hard Drive (Product ID st318438lw) from my G3 into the G4... please, posters be aware that I am a novice. No laughing!

Bbbiedul, welcome, would need to remove the SCSI pci card from the G3 along with the hard drive. I would suggest install the PCI card first boot up and see if it shows up in System Profiler. You may need a firmware update for the card.
Unless you have a SCSI card already in the G4 this is the only way to connect, since the G4 is more than likely IDE connection. Here is a link for installation guide for the drrive.

  • Can I put the Hard Drive from old iBook into new iBook?

    I need a new motherboard for my old iBook which has no other damage. New motherboard costs about the same as a new iBook;
so can I have the drive from the old iBook put into a new iBook? Old iBook is about 2 years old.
    Thanks!

Gareth; there are no iBooks with Intel processors. These are MacBooks.
As for your question, it's unlikely that you could, as the new Macs appear to have different firmware on the drives. It would also invalidate the warranty on a new computer.
Far easier to put the old drive into an external FW or USB enclosure and use it to transfer your files, applications and settings during first boot of the new Mac using the Setup Assistant.

  • Can I put a hard drive from a 12" powerbook into a 17" powerbook?

I have a 12" powerbook which needs a new logic board. I have found a 17" powerbook for sale which needs a new hard drive. Could I put the hard drive from my 12" into this 17"?

Hi and welcome to Apple discussions!
Yes they both use the same type/size hard drive.

  • Can I put the hard drive from my unrepairable iMac into another equivalent iMac?

THE LOGIC BOARD IN MY OLDER IMAC IS KAPUT.   CAN I SIMPLY PUT THE HARD DRIVE FROM MY FAILED IMAC INTO A WORKING EQUIVALENT IMAC?   ( I SEE PEOPLE SELLING THE SAME IMAC ON CRAIG'S LIST FOR $150.)

    Hi.
Yes, you can install the drive from the old iMac into another same-model iMac and it should have no problem booting.
Optionally, I would suggest you search online for a FireWire external drive enclosure. Take the drive out of your old iMac and install it into the FireWire drive enclosure. Now you can use your old drive as an external, bootable hd on your replacement iMac, or on any other Mac that you might purchase in the future.
Of course, you could swap the drive from your failed iMac into the one you buy on Craig's List... then put the drive you take from that into the external drive enclosure.
I suggest a FireWire enclosure because the older iMacs, the PPC models, can boot from an external FireWire drive, but I believe not from a USB drive.

  • Can I put the hard drive from my Lacie External HD into my 1.25 G4?

I have a 1.25 GHZ G4 and would like to increase it's internal storage. If I can I would like to put my Lacie External HD into my machine (120 GB) and then purchase a new larger HD to place in the Lacie box. I'm not sure if this is possible? What do I need to check when looking for a new HD for my machine? Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming that the hard drive in your external case is a 3.5 inch unit, it will work just fine. The only thing you have to do is make sure that your jumpers are set properly (master on your OS drive, slave on your secondary drive). There is a possibility that you will have to purchase a different hard drive cable, unless your machine is already setup with a dual cable & the stack bracket (you also have to make sure that the 'master' drive is plugged into the end of the cable & the 'slave' drive is plugged into the middle of the cable). I have never had a problem putting a larger hard drive into an external case (all of mine have been firewire). I hope this helps.

  • How do install windows hard drive (from dead pc) into boot camp partition

My Windows 7 desktop died recently, so I took the opportunity to buy a Mac Mini (latest version as of Feb 2012) as a replacement.  I want to transfer  the Windows 7 installation (from the dead PC) including all applications, accounts, settings, user files, etc to the Boot Camp Partition.   Can someone please provide the steps on how to perform the Win 7 migration to the Mac Mini.

    Just to clarify:
I want to install the Windows 7 installation from dead the PC into the Mac Mini's Boot Camp partition.
I installed the PC's hard drive into an enclosure and connected it to the Mac Mini via the USB port.
What I want to do is the following:
    1) Do a Windows 7 "fresh" install in the Mac Mini Boot Camp partition.
    2) Migrate all the applications installed on the  Windows 7 PC and their associated data.
    3) Migrate all user accounts and data.
Is there a tool that can transfer all applications and user accounts from the Windows 7 Hard Drive to the Boot Camp partition on the Mini?
Based on the documentation the Window Migration tool is Lion OS utility and does not perform a complete migration of all applications installed on the Windows machine.
    thank you.

  • Can I transfer the hard drive from my Macbook into a new Macbook Pro?

I have been planning on purchasing a Macbook Pro for quite sometime now, however I find that the storage space on the base models is quite small. I currently have a 500gb hard drive on my Macbook, and I was wondering if there's any way I could transfer this hard drive into a new Macbook Pro.

If you are considering to purchase Mac Book Pro is not Retina, you can get 1TB HDD as option with +$50.

  • Putting a DVD drive from a G5 into my  G$

I have a DVD Burner drive from an old G5. I want to put it in my old 450 mhz dual processor G4 which only has a cd drive – no burner. WIll this work? Is there any software out there to burn DVD's on OS9.1?

I believe it will work. When using OS 9.2, I use Toast Titanium 5.2 to burn CDs. I don't have a DVD burner. The Toast specs say it can be used to burn DVDs.

  • Can I put my hard drive from my 2009 Macbook in my 2011 macbook pro

I am swapping computers with a co worker.  I have the 2008 Aluminum body MacBook and he as the 2011/12 MacBook Pro.  To make it an easy swap I was hoping I could swap the hard drives.  My MacBook is updated to Mountain Lion and has all the updates.  His I believe still has Lion.
It makes sense to me that I should be able to swap hard drives and turn them on and watch them go.  However I'm certain there is something I am missing.
Does anyone know if this is an easy task or not.  I have upgraded my 2008 MacBook to a 500GB HD.  The HD in the Pro is also 500 GB.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks

normally i would say that it wouldn't work because your hard drive doesn't have the right drivers for the 2011/12 Macbook since they're totally different in ways of chipset and graphics.
but because you're running Mountain Lion - it might work if you just do the swap.
give it a try - the worst that can happen - the 2011/2012 Macbook might not boot.
    good luck

  • Will hard drive from a core duo macbook work in a core 2 duo macbook? (both white macbooks)

I want to replace my 1.83ghz core duo macbook.
Can I put the hard drive from this macbook into another macbook with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor?
The 1.83ghz is a white macbook. The 2.4ghz is also a white macbook.
Will it work okay this way?
I am trying to avoid doing a complete re-install.

While the two macbooks take the same hard drive(SATA), the core 2 duo will most likely have a larger hard drive(unless you replaced the original drive in your Core Duo).
Also, you cannot boot the Core 2 Duo computer with a drive from a Core Duo unless you reformat the drive and install OS X from the disks that came with the Core 2 Duo.

  • Using my boot hard drive from an older Macbook pro into a new one?

    Hi,
I put my hard drive from my older Macbook pro 15" 2.16 Ghz Core2 Duo computer (Mac 10.6.4) into my new Macbook pro 2.4 GHz (2010) as my boot drive. Since then I've upgraded to 10.6.6 and everything seems fine.
My concern is that since my OS was installed on a different computer, I might not have all the proper drivers for my new machine. Can this be the case? Does the OS install all drivers for all models all the time? Sometimes I wonder if my graphics card drivers are installed because it seems slower than I expect, but the graphics card shows up in System Profiler.
    Thanks!
    Jason

You can resolve that by installing the 10.6.6 Combo Updater instead of the smaller incremental updater.
+BTW, you should never use a version of OS X that's older than the version that shipped with the computer.+

  • Is it possible to remove hard drive from G5 and install it on new MacPro?

My G5 will not power up and I have files that are not backed up. Can I install the hard drive from the G5 into an empty bay onto my new MacPro and copy them over on the MacPro? Is this something that can be done or do I need to just take the G5 into the Apple repair store and have the files copied on a DVD?
    Thank you.

Your new Mac Pro uses GUID, which will required for insalling OS X, good idea to reformat the drive again afterwards.
I'd put it in a FW case, use that (reformatted) as external system backup and emergencies.

hello. my name is brandon. my hp laptop motherboard died 3 days ago. i have put my hard drive into an enclosure to be able to access all my info and files. i have successfully transferred all my files, but I am not sure if, or how i can access all my mozilla bookmarks from my my old hard drive to be able to put onto my new laptop, which is an macbook pro. my bookmarks were crucial to pay bills etc, so any help would be greatly appreciated, brandon

Not familiar with the Mac file structure either but you can transfer the entire content of your Firefox profile replacing entire content of a firefox profile you created on new HD. For me copying over a few files was out of the question all of the files are updated and I wasn't about to reinstall 150+ extensions and set up configurations for everything and to do that for that 20 profiles and .ini file. Except for 3 most didn't have a lot of extensions but it would be rather impossible.
I copied everything from the Mozilla folder down in the user libraries so all my profiles were set, it did something similar for application libraries.
