Putting a SSD drive in a MacBook?

Not sure if this is the right category, oh well.
Anyways, seeing the Air today got me thinking - could I put a SSD drive in my MacBook? I googled a bit and saw one guy who did so with a 64gig Samsung drive in his MacBook Pro. Of course, I can't afford the $1300 for one. I'd be down with a 32, 16, or maybe even 8gb drive (would have to run Linux in that case).
Has anyone else done this? Is the reason I'm finding not much because of the lack of SSD drives and the high price?
Thanks!

So you're talking about getting rid of OS X completely... and just using a small 8GB SS HDD? This seems to be something of a waste for something like a MacBook.
If you do decide to go that route, be sure to get an SATA version. It seems the old IDE ones are more common (for some reason) and they tend to charge more for the SATA versions that I've seen.
Have you considered something like an Asus EEE PC? You can get one with as little as 2GB installed for about $300 with Linux pre-installed. You can get more memory for a higher price:

They're great little machines to play with and you won't be crippling your MacBook.

  • Beachball and hanging after putting old hard drive into new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I really hope to find some help here.
    The situation:
I had a MacBook Pro Early 2008 running Lion (10.7.5) until it died about a week ago (mainboard broken).
In this old Macbook Pro I had two hard drives: 128GB SSD and 1TB SATA 5400.
I bought a second hand MacBook Pro Late 2011 on ebay and upgraded the Ram to 16 GB.
Then I put the two hard drives in the new MacBook Pro Late 2011.
The Macbook is super fast and very responsive but every couple of minutes it is hanging for a few seconds or I get a beachball randomly.
This can happen in Finder, Google Chrome, Adobe Dreamweaver, basically anytime using any software.
I tried to create a new account and see if the problem persists. And yes, it does.
I tested the hard drives (disk utility) and the Ram (memtest/terminal) and all is ok with this.
The Macbook Pro Late 2011 comes with a 256 GB SSD and an empty slot for the second hard drive. The Macbook seems to function normal when using the 256GB SSD with Lion installed.
Unfortunately my external backup hard drive is not working anymore so I can't restore from there.
What do you recommend? Would it make sense to make a backup now, take out the 128GB and put in the 256 GB hard drive?
    Please advice!
Thanks for any kind of help in advance!
    Chris

I know people that have been doing things for longer than 10 years and they know jack. Formatting the HD is not really good "advice" in this situation.
I'm not cocksure - you just think I am because I'm disagreeing with you opinion, which you believe to be sacred (because you've been commenting for 10 years?).
So I thank you sir for your opinion but I certainly do not need your luck.
    Later.

  • Install a boot SSD drive into new MacBook

I'm purchasing a new MBP, without retina display. Unfortunately, the high cost of the larger size SSD's priced me out of it.
That being said, my new MBP will be shipping with the 1tb HDD. Is there room inside the laptop for me to install a small (64gb or so) SSD in there with the HDD, to run the OS on?

Yes and no. there is no ROOM inside for another drive but you can take the Optical, DVD, drive out and put the 1TB drive in a caddy for that bay and then the SSD in the main bay. But by doing that your warranty would be voided.

  • 2d (SSD) drive on a MacBook Pro?

I have been told that it is possible to take an SSD drive
and insert it into the oval-shaped side slot of a MacBook Pro
and config the SSD as the system disk and config the
original non-SSD disk as a data disk.
    Is this possible?
    Anyone have experience?

Sure, you can do that. Voids your warranty. Complete instructions/videos & product, here:

  • Anyone experienced with replacing the hard drive by an SSD- drive in a MacBook Pro?

Is anyone of you experienced in replacing the hard disk of a MacBoorkPro by an SSD-drive?
I am considering the Crucial drive of 1TB and have read almost anything I could get on the issue of cloning without reinstalling al that stuff I have running. Seems like Crucial has a general solution to that which should also work for Apple. Or should I use Time Machine itself?
Thanks for replying. I need to tell you all that almost any comment is useful. Already have I found so many suggestions by people all around this world which have been useful, and I cannot even thank the person in person...

Hi Eustace, thanks for your interest & reply
Seems like we did the exact same things, basicallly and it works fine here. I enclosed the original HDD and put it away on some dark & cool spot, just in case of any future trouble - after all it contains a complet & running system.
I took out the optical drive (which had got stuck anyway) put in two Samsung Pro's 840 512 Gig each, and installed another pair of these externally enclosed as back up drives (USB, the first CCC-cloning operation took many hours).
System is superfast now and no more moving things in there besides the fans. But nothing gets hot anymore either and with all that complete silence... I love it!

  • Putting an SSD drive in Pavilion dv6436nr

I am wondering if it is feasible to upgrade the hard drive in my Pavilion dv6436nr with an SSD drive.  The original drive (computer was purchased in July 2007) is 160GB and I have 2GB of RAM.  How easy is it to make this upgrade and what are the interface specifications to check before purchasing an SSD drive?  Thanks.

No you will not be able to run an SSD at optimum settings. On the dv6499 and lower model numbers with AMD processors, the SATA controller is not really SATA; it is IDE through a physical SATA port. That is why we were able to load XP on them without using a SATA driver with an F6 installation. That means no ahci. An SSD may be a little faster than a hard drive but to be perfectly honest and frank I would not invest any significant money on that machine at this point.

  • Move full SSD / Drive from busted Macbook Pro 2010 to older model

    Hi,
I have a 13" Macbook Pro 2010 model whose logic board has failed. I want to take the SSD (installed with Snow Leopard and full of files and folder structures I want to keep) out of this busted computer and move it over to a Late 2007 Macbook Pro model I have lying around to get access to the drive again. I know in theory, I can install a SSD into this model, but can I install an SSD that is already formatted by my newer model? Are there things I need to consider?
And if the answer is yes, BUT it can be slightly unstable, can I go about mirroring the drive onto an external hardrive once it is in the 2007 model, wiping the SSD, reinstalling the SSD with a fresh boot and then transferring file structure from mirrored drive back onto the freshly installed SSD in my 2007 model? Does that sound like a good process?
    Thanks.

The OS is  machine-specific, so I doubt that an OS installed on a SSD on a 2010 would even boot a 2007 model.
You can TRY to install the drive into the 2007 model and use the installation disc(s) that came with that model to install the OS. It might work, might not. More likely than not, you're just going to have to erase the SSD, from Disk Utility on your installation disc, and start anew.

  • Can you replace the ssd drive in retina macbook pro with hdd inside of a bay of some kind?

Hey guys, want to replace my 256 flash based drive in my 2014 macbook pro retina with a 1th 7200rpm hdd. Is this possible with a bay adapter of some kind?

No. The SSD is not upgradeable. There is not bay. The SSD is just a small board attached to the motherboard.

  • Can I install a Hybrid HDD SSD drive in my Macbook early 2009?

I was thinking of installing this new drive into my 13-inch White MacBook early 2009 edition.  I have read community pages stating it should be fine so long as i do not go over 9.5 mm height and is a 2.5 inch SATA.
    http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Solid-Hybrid-ST95005620AS/dp/B003NSBF32/r ef=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp
But I would rather be safe than out all the cash.
Please let me know if this is a good decision.  (Note I am not high on cash at the moment and am using some winnings from a hackathon to purchase the item.)

I installed one in an early 2008 MacBook 4,1 and it worked perfectly.....I would expect the same results for the early 2009.....

  • Installing an SSD drive in a Macbook Pro

Hello All.  Thanks all for detailed replies.
I may not have read all your posts properly but today I tried to clone the SSD with my current HD in disk utilities but it wouldn't let me.  Told me to use disk utility in recovery mode -I was able to "clone" the HD.  Then proceeded to shut down my mac, switched out the HDs, then pressed start.....got the folder icon with a ? mark.  Read some other discussions regarding that so I tried the different key combos before booting up.  None worked (mac auto shuts off instead of rebooting second time after command prompts i.e. CMD +R; Shift Key; Option, NVRAM reset....).
    ***A little background issue***
Luckily I had an external HD where I created a Mac OS boot drive (when I first created the external HD boot drive) I must have done something wrong cause I have no recovery disk icon in System pref -> Startup Disk (Only have the main HD drive icon).  Not to mention that doing so wiped my HD so I had to manual recover from TC.
After booting from the external HD boot drive (with the SSD installed) I made progress but was stopped at the grey screen w/ stop sign.  I back-tracked and re-installed my original Mac HD back into the MBP and have not done anything further in fear of messing it up again.
From all your comments plus my hands-on-approach, I now understand that TRIM is still enabled and needs to be off prior to hardware mods.  If I am understanding this correctly, the reason I was unable to boot whatsoever with the SSD installed is because there is no OS installed on the SSD.  Am I safe to make this assumption?
And, if so, what way should i install the OS onto the SSD?  A follow-on question is, once my SSD has an OS installed on it, I should enable TRIM, reboot MBP, then shut-down again before I install the SSD, correct?
Hopefully I made sense in a orderly fashion so someone more intelligent than me in this field can yay or nay my process.  Thanks all!

...I looked at the System Info and it says TRIM is disabled.  Is that supposed to happen?  I thought one had to physically disable TRIM...
If TRIM was actually activated on your source drive, I'd expect it to be carried over but it's a good thing it didn't. TRIM is excellent to have active when using an SSD, but in Yosemite, it's blocked by design because the kext which has to be modified to make it work on third party SSD's fails the new kext-signing test that's a Yosemite security feature. You can turn it back on by disabling that security feature entirely but when you do any OS update, there's a real risk that the partition will simply refuse to boot. Read this for a detailed explanation of the risks.
You can look through this link for an explanation of what TRIM is and why it's good to have it running. It's possible to activate TRIM and, when doing any kind of OS update, turn it off and back on when it's done, but circumstances may arise where you forget or it just isn't possible and you may get burned. I did once, before the conflict was generally recognized, and it was a real pain to start over.

  • What is the largest SSD Drive for my MacBook pro 8,2?

What is the largest solid state drive I can install in my MacBook pro 15" (Version 8,2 - i7 2.3 GHz) with 8GB RAM I currently am running OS X 10.6.8 But I want to upgrade to Mavericks 10.9 and perform a clean install with Mavericks and manually move my files off of my backup.
The Samsung 1TB  MZ-7TE1TB0BW looks nice but I don't know if it works well with my older MacBook Pro, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this.
    Thanks

1TB is as large as you'll get. Crucial also makes a nice one, and I can speak for Crucial working well with a machine that's 2 years older than yours.

  • SSD Drive in Macbook Pro for Live PA

    Hi all
Just wondered if there are any people on here who have experience with a SSD Drive in their Macbook Pro using it in Live PA situations?
I'm trying to make it shock/vibration resistant (well as far as possible) and reduce heat. There are some rumours about that on audio playback the sound is compromised?
All I want to do is playback audio via Ableton or Logic and use a controller to manipulate filters and effects.

It does not void AppleCare on the new MacBook Pros with the glass screens. It will void your warranty on an older model.

  • Advice on how to format an external hard drive for a MacBook Air

I have an external USB hard drive plugged into a 64GB MacBook Air. How should I format the hard drive so that when I run out of room on the small 64 GB SSD drive on the MacBook Air, it will start putting some iTunes or other files onto the external hard drive? I only put iTunes and other small music files on the MacBook Air in order to save room. I do have iTunes set for iCloud.

You cannot format a drive so that files will be automatically put on that drive when you run out of room on another drive. Transferring the files must be done specifically by you. You will need to learn how to manage free space on the SSD because 64 GBs is a bit small for much more than OS X.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
